NGSE Indicator Climbs Higher, Ahead Of June Inflation, MPC Meeting Market Update for July 16 Thursday’s trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange NSE) was bullish extending the gaining momentum of the previous session on long and short-term money flow into the telecommunication, healthcare and financial services sectors. This was ahead of the 2020Q2 earnings reporting season that kicked off with United Capital and Union Home Real Estate Investment Trust releasing their half-year score-cards to the market. A snapshot of the report by Ucap for the period showed that it was impressive, with top and bottom lines growing by 37% and 16% respectively, translating to 32 kobo Earnings Per Share, from 28 kobo in the 2019Q2 to reflect the impact of the stock market rebound in the period under review and the impact of the fresh injection of fund by way of its bond. The result has shown that the investment company was not affected by the lockdown arising from the Coronavirus pandemic. The real estate, especially commercial real estate, would likely be the first segment of the real estate market or business to enter the second phase of an extended collapse, because the pandemic has created an atmosphere where continuing operations for the retail side and restaurants, like many other business segments are virtually impossible to maintain. The sectorial rotation and performance have been mixed and volatile in addition to the general market over the most recent period therefore the overall outlook is unstable. Already, the half-year earnings performance, the discovery of a Covid 19 vaccine, oil price recovery and effective implementation of government’s intervention policies and 2020 revised budget failed to give the much desired direction. Focusing on diversifying your long trades in sectors that have strong upside potential, especially looking at the Telecoms and healthcare sectors which have shown the most strength, therefore, is key at this point. On Thursday, MTNN and Julius Berger edged toward a buy point on their earnings expectation as selloffs and profit taking hit the airline services providers. Meanwhile Thursday trading started in the upside and oscillated throughout the session with buying interest in MTNN, Airtel Africa and banking stocks pushing the NSE’s All-Share Index to an intra-day high of 24,330.06 basis points, from its low of 24,114.59bps. Thereafter, the index closed higher than midweek’s level at 24,130.28bps on a positive breadth. Market technicals for Thursday were positive and mixed on volume traded slightly lower than the previous session’s even as breadth favoured the bulls on a strong buying pressure as revealed by Investdata’s Daily Sentiment Report showing a ‘buy’ volume of 100%. Total daily transaction volume index stood at 1.02, just as the momentum behind the day’s performance stayed weak, with Money Flow Index reading 36.60 points, as against the previous 34.63ps, indicating that funds entered the market through some stocks. Index and Market Caps The NSEASI, at the close of Thursday’s trading, gained 199.90 basis points, closing at 24,330.06bps, after opening at 24,130.26bps, representing 0.83% growth, just as market capitalization was up N104.22bn, closing at N12.73tr, from an opening value of N12.59tr representing 0.84% appreciation in value. If you are yet to sign up for Investdata’s Buy and Sell signal setup, don’t delay. We have just added another risk management feature and six categories of stocks to see you through in this changing market dynamics and economic uncertainties. These stocks are with double potentials to rally and protect your funds considering their current market prices. To become a member, send ‘YES’ or ‘STOCKS’ to the phone numbers below. Take advantage of this service to buy right and sell right at this current market oscillation and earnings reporting season for portfolio realignment and positioning as we await an economic reform policy to stimulate and re-track the economy again. Thursday upturn was due to value gains in stocks like Airtell Africa, MTNN, Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank, UBA, Dangote Sugar, Sterling Bank, Cadbury, and Ikeja Hotels. These impacted positively on the NSE’s benchmark index’s Year-To-Date, reducing the loss which dropped to 9.36%, just as the contraction in market capitalization YTD, dropped to N255.22bn, representing a 1.98% drop from the year’s opening level. Mixed Sector indices The sectoral indexes closed the day mixed, with the NSE Banking and Insurance index rising 1.01% and 0.08% higher respectively, while the NSE Consumers Goods index led the decliners after losing 0.46%, followed by NSE Oil/Gas which was down by 0.27%. Market breadth turned positive as advancers outnumbered decliners in the ratio of 13:11, while transactions in volume and value terms were downby 0.46% and 43.75% respectively, after investors exchanged 207.4m shares worth N987.77m, from the previous day’s 208.21m units valued at N1.76bn. This volume was driven by trades in Sterling Bank, FBNH, Japaul Oil, Transcorp and Custodian Investment. Ikeja Hotel and Presco were the best performing stocks for the day, after gaining 9.80% and 9.28% respectively, closing at N1.12 and N49.45 per share on market forces and the N2 per share dividend. On the flip side, Nahco and Unity Bank lost 9.88% and 9.84%, closing at N1.98 and N0.45 per share respectively on profit taking and selloffs. Market Outlook We expect the mixed trend to continue as the earnings season kicks off with United Capital and UHREIT filing their numbers ahead of the June inflation report, and the MPC meeting that has been scheduled to hold on Monday. But inconsistent government policies continue to dampen investor confidence ahead of the expectedly disappointing half-year corporate earnings reports. This is likely to support the wave of decline as pullbacks persist, creating new entering opportunities. Money flow index has continued to look down at 35.64, despite flowing from one sector to the other, seeking value in terms of low prices with high upside potentials. This is just as economic recovery is threatened by the rising cases of the COVID-19 pandemic, ahead of the Q2 earnings reports season, which implies that opportunities are still available as sectoral rotation continues. Also, sectors that have suffered oversold, so far, offer attractive risk-reward buy-opportunities and outlook for considerable short, medium and long term investment. For immediate liquidity or cash we advice that you trade low priced stocks with serious caution to avoid being trapped. However, the market’s high dividend yield continues to attract buying interests, as few audited and unaudited corporate earnings will hit the market, going forward. This is despite the likely continuation of selloffs. Investors are buying to increase their positions in undervalued stocks ahead of Q2 numbers. It is also against the backdrop of the fact that the capital wave in the financial markets may persist in the midst of relatively low-interest rates in the money market, high inflation, and unstable economic outlook for 2020. Again, the current undervalued state of the market offers opportunities to position for the short, medium and long-term, which is why investors should target fundamentally sound, and dividend-paying stocks for possible capital appreciation going forward. Also, traders and investors need to change their strategies, because of the NSE’s pricing methodology, the CBN directives, and their impact on the economy in the nearest future. https://investdata.com.ng/ngse-indicator-climbs-higher-ahead-of-june-inflation-mpc-meeting/#more

Ambrose Here Again, During the first 14 days lockdown that was declared in Lagos, Ogun, and Abuja, I saw one of the reasons why lion is a fierce animal. This group of lions trailed an elephant from the morning and were very persistent with their thick skin fingers and bone-crushing teeth to frustrate the Elephant. In the night, they finally succeeded in killing the giant elephant. When it comes to the stock market, there are 2 camps: Master/slave, strong/weak, etc. Life is not for the weak who will not want to become strong, but ready to be crushed by the strong. It is either you are the shark of the ocean or fish to be consumed by sharks. It is either you are one of the predators or you are a prey. However, whichever camp you want to depend on your decision today. It is your choice. So get the Mastering Earnings Season for profitable trading and investing Training Videos by calling 08032055467, 08028164085 to place your order and join the camp of predators who will dominate the market or seat on the fence and join the camp of the prey who don't have control over what will happen to their portfolio Don't forget to always keep and stay safe... Finance Minister Says Buhari To Present 2021 Budget Sept Sign Revised 2020 budget Friday FG Achieves 56% Of 5-Month Revenue Target Debt Servicing Gulps N1.25tr Mrs. Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, on Thursday said President Muhammadu Buhari has directed her Ministry to expedite action on the 2021 budget estimates which he hopes to present to the National Assembly by the end of September. Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly on plans to submit the 2021-2023 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper (MTEF/FSP), she also disclosed that the President will on Friday sign the revised N10.8tr revised 2020 budget passed by the National Assembly in June into law. The Minister, who briefed principal officers of the Senate and House of Representatives led by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, and the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, said the Buhari administration is committed to keeping strictly with the January – December budget cycle. Ahmed explained, “this for us is a journey towards ensuring that the progress that we have made as a collective to return the fiscal year to January – December is maintained for the 2021 budget as well, according to a statement by Ezrel Tabiowo, Special Assistant (Press) to President of the Senate. “The President has directed that we must deliver the budget to the National Assembly by the end of September,” she stressed, putting the Federal Government’s retained revenue between January and May 2020, at N1.48tr, representing 56% of target. A breakdown of the sum generated as revenue showed that oil accounted for N701.6bn, or 47.4%; non-oil tax, N439.32bn or 29.68%; Companies Income Tax (CIT) and Value Added Tax (VAT) collections, N213.24bn or 14.4%; and N68.09bn, 0.046%; and Customs collection N158bn, or 10.67% respectively. “Other revenues amounted to N339.51bn, of which Independent revenues was N80.22bn. Recoveries and Stamp duty collected during the period are yet to be booked in the fiscal accounts,” Ahmed said. On expenditure performance for the same period (January – May 2020), she disclosed that N1.25tr was expended for debt service; and N1.32tr for Personnel cost, including Pensions. According to the Finance Minister, as at the end of May 2020, only N253.33 billion had been released for capital expenditure. Ahmed while giving underlying assumptions driving the macro-economic parameters and targets of the 2021 – 2023 Medium Term Expenditure Framework said same was “revised in line with the emergent realities.” She stated that the Oil Price Benchmark for the 2021 fiscal year was pegged at USD$35; and USD$40 for 2022 and 2023, respectively. Oil production (mbpd) was placed at 1.86 for 2021, 2.09 for 2022, and 2.38 for the 2022 fiscal year; while the Exchange Rate remains at N360 to USD$1. Ahmed stressed that, “although Nigeria’s total production capacity is 2.5m barrels per day, current crude production is about 1.4m barrels per day – in compliance with the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries’ production quota – and an additional 300,000 barrels per day of condensates, totaling about 1.7mbpd.” She added that while the World Bank forecasts that crude oil prices will rise gradually from an average of USD$42 per barrel in 2021 to USD$44.5 per barrel in 2022; and USD$47pb in 2023, it is also expected that Brent crude oil prices may average $41 per barrel during the second half of 2020 and $50pb during 2021, climbing as high as $53pb by the end of next year. “The nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to increase from N130,836.1 billion in 2020 to N132,125.4 billion in 2021 and then up to N138,415.8 billion in 2023,” Ahmed said. Earlier, the Senate President in his welcome remarks said he meeting was “at the instance of the Honourable Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, and the main purpose of the meeting is for the Minister to brief the leadership of the National Assembly on the 2021 – 2023 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper. “Therefore, it will not be wrong to say that the journey to the presentation of the 2021 budget estimates by the Executive arm of Government has started in earnest. “It is our expectation in the National Assembly that this journey will lead to the presentation or laying of the budget estimates by the President before the end of September by the grace of God.” https://investdata.com.ng/finance-minister-says-buhari-to-present-2021-budget-sept/

Ecobank Nigeria Extends Agric Loan to 70,000 Farmers Ecobank Nigeria says it remains committed to the nation’s agricultural sector, following which it is supporting over 70,000 farmers with special loans to increase their capacity and yields during this planting season. This, the bank said, is one of its initiatives to promote entrepreneurship in the sector and support the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Anchor Borrowers programmes for the 2020 wet season with the Maize Growers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (MAGPAMAN). Head, Agribusiness, Ecobank Nigeria, Mojisola Oguntoyinbo, who announced this in Lagos while responding to media enquiries on the participation of the bank in the CBN scheme, said the initiative spreads across the 36 states of the country. The initiative, she noted further, is one of several concerted efforts through which the bank is supporting government to create an ecosystem that gives small holder farmers access to funding and the required support to increase food production in the country. The scheme, she continued, is designed to connect small holder farmers with processors and off takers within the agriculture value chain. “We are creating opportunities in the Agric sector that will help many small holder farmers expand their business and become worthy employers of labour by adopting modern farming techniques for the betterment of our economy. We are in strategic partnership with NIRSAL and some other developmental institutions to achieve our purpose.” Ecobank Nigeria, she stressed, is partnering the CBN “in all its intervention schemes and programmes aimed at developing the sector. Our relationships are generating positive activities across the entire Agric value chain”. This comes on the heels of the bank’s widely acclaimed Agri-business summit with key stakeholders, held earlier in the year. Ecobank said in the statement that it has been actively leveraging entrepreneurship as a strategy to tackle poverty and growing unemployment, through the creation of relevant platforms. One such platform, it noted further, is the Ecobank Xpress Point, the bank’s Agency Banking proposition which enables agents to carry out financial transactions on behalf of the bank, earning a commission on transactions processed. Thousands of Nigerians have taken advantage of this opportunity to become Xpress Point agents and have, in turn, employed several others, thereby improving financial inclusion and creating employment opportunities. Xpress Points are in various neighbourhoods across the country and are well-positioned to facilitate financial transactions in the communities which they serve. https://investdata.com.ng/ecobank-nigeria-extends-agric-loan-to-70000-farmers/

COVID-19: Nigeria’s GDP May Shrink By 7.2- AfDB Economic Outlook Says Accounts Mainly For Africa’s Recession The African Development Bank (AfDB), on Tuesday, released its revised African Economic Outlook showing that the continent’s real GDP could contract by 1.7% and as much as 3.4% in 2020, should the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic linger beyond the first half of 2020. The initial Economic Outlook, which was released on January 30 had forecast 3.9% for the continent in 2020 and 4.1% next year. This is a significant drop from the 7.3 percentage points growth projected before the outbreak of COVID–19, with the continent’s five largest economies- Nigeria, South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, and Morocco, together accounting for a large portion of the recession in the continent. Specifically, it said “the projected recessions in Nigeria and South Africa alone account for more than half of the contraction in 2020. The overall contraction would have been deeper if not for the counteracting effect of Egypt, which is projected to maintain a growth of 2.2% in the baseline scenario. Although, the report calls for a more coordinated, targeted and rapid manner response by governments and development partners to effectively limit the impact of the pandemic, without which Nigeria’s economy could contract by between 4.4% and 7.2%. This would depend on the gravity and duration of the global health crisis, wiping out gains from three consecutive years of growth since the 2016 recession. The projection, the report believes, may not come as a shock to the country’s government, which depend 90% on crude oil and gas for total export revenue and over 50% of cumulative revenues, at a time it “projects oil revenues to decline by 90% in 2020 due to the decline in oil price triggered by low demand. Nigeria’s budget deficit, the report continued, is projected to jump to 6.7% in the baseline scenario, “with potential to deteriorate to 7.8% if the pandemic persists beyond the second half of 2020.” With the falling crude oil prices and a cut in production output as agreed by members of the OPEC cartel, lower exports could bloat the current account deficit to between 4% of GDP in the baseline scenario and 5% in a worst-case scenario, wiping out the pre-COVID–19 projected marginal surplus. As if these were not enough bad news already, the AfDB outlook says the COVID–19 pandemic is now a socio-economic crisis with far-reaching implications on jobs and poverty, even as Nigeria’s inflation rate could touch the 14% mark this year, from the 11.1% projected before the crisis. The AEO, noted the cocktail of fiscal and monetary policy stimulus measures taken to mitigate the economic impact of the pandemic, including the government’s N500bn ($1.4 billion) credit facility to support health-care facilities, tax reliefs, and incentivizing employers to retain and recruit staff during the downturn, among others. On its own part, the AfDB acknowledged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) packages such as N50bn ($139m) targeted credit facility and liquidity injection of N3.6tr (2.4% of GDP) into the banking system. This was in addition to reducing interest rates from 9% to 5% on all its applicable interventions and introduced a one-year moratorium on its intervention facilities. The report, however, expressed belief that “the pandemic presents an opportunity to strengthen the health system’s resilience and stimulate economic growth, which will require additional resources and targeted investment.” It called for prudent deployment of financing from development partners “to improve the quality of the health sector as well as undertake structural reforms to build economic resilience against future shocks. Failure to adopt a coordinated approach to tackling the pandemic among stakeholders in the African economy, the report warns, could push 49m more Africans into extreme poverty in the aftermath of the pandemic. Worst hit, it noted, could be West and Central Africa, especially Nigeria and Democratic Republic of Congo, two of continent’s most populous countries. Both countries could account for as much as “8.5m and 2.7m respectively in the baseline scenario in 2020, and 11.5m and 3.4m in the worst-case scenario.” The outlook for Africa’s recovery in the short and medium term, the AEO said, remains uncertain and susceptible to the immediate and long-term consequences of the COVID–19 pandemic, even as Africa’s growth is projected to rebound by 3% in 2021 in the baseline scenario and 2.4% in the worst-case scenario. “This V-shaped recovery would only be partial since sectors such as tourism, transportation, and entertainment may take longer to fully recover as people gradually readjust to the new normal in social interactions. The projected recovery in 2021 may not make up for an estimated cumulative loss to Africa’s GDP of between $173.1–$236.7bn for 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic Africa’s economic growth could rebound in 2021, provided that governments manage the COVID-19 infection rate well, according to. A statement by the bank quoted Charles Leyeka Lufumpa, Acting Chief Economist and Vice President for Economic Governance and Knowledge Management, at the AfDB as saying that to reopen economies, policymakers must “follow a phased and incremental approach that carefully evaluates the trade-offs between restarting economic activity too quickly and safeguarding the health of the population. “Economic activities can be restarted incrementally on the basis of the transmission risks of different sectors,” Lufumpa said. Executive Director of the African Economic Research Consortium and Former Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, Njuguna Ndung’u described the African Economic Outlook 2020 supplement as “a very important and useful policy tool for African countries who actually need it at this time. “It will be useful now and in the future. It gives us important short, medium- and long-term strategies,” he added, stressing crises like COVID-19 present a good opportunity for innovative reforms in countries. Hanan Morsy, Director of the Macroeconomic Policy, Forecasting and Research Department at the AfDB, said the outlook “shows that for the first time in the last half-century, Africa would be facing an economic recession as a fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. This would affect the gains achieved in poverty reduction as an estimated 49 million Africans could be pushed into poverty, with about 30m jobs on the verge of disappearing. Policymakers need to act fast to alleviate the impact of the crisis on vulnerable groups through well-targeted social safety net measures.” The report called for urgent policy interventions to mitigate the impact of the pandemic: “Across Africa, the response must be well-sequenced and multipronged, involving a public health response to contain the spread of the virus and minimise fatalities, a monetary policy response to ease liquidity constraints and solvency risks, and a fiscal response to cushion the economic impacts of the pandemic on livelihoods and to assist businesses.” https://investdata.com.ng/covid-19-nigerias-gdp-may-shrink-by-7-2-afdb-economic-outlook/

THE POOR, THE RICH AND THE BANK!! 1. A bank is a broker between the poor and the rich. 2. The commonplace where the two meet is in a bank. 3. The poor bring money in the form of savings. 4. NGSE Index Up, As Investors Seek Low Priced Stocks With High Upside Potentials Market Update for July 7 Trading activities on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), on Tuesday had a volatile and mixed session, as the benchmark All Share index resisted further decline on a seeming buying interest in high priced stocks that helped the market to close higher on less than average traded volume. This is a reflection of the lingering indecision and dwindling confidence among investors while taking positions. With more companies releasing their closed period the Q2 and earnings season kicking off next week when early filers are expected to start hitting the market with actual numbers, even as investors continue to show mixed reactions. Technically, trend following indicators turned up as the index closed above the lower Bollinger Bands by 4.7%. Meanwhile, Bollinger Bands are 54.6% narrower than normal. The narrow width of the bands suggests low volatility, compared to NSEASI’s normal trading range. Money flow index is looking up at 27.57, indicating that liquidity in the market is still low, considering the mixed sentiment that had prevailed in recent times. It is obvious that the Coronavirus (COVID-19) has triggered a reset in the global and domestic economy and the effect will continue to re-direct market trends against known historical patterns. So, players should be cautious around the market arena, setting a good buying range and exit strategies at all times. As we have always noted also, in any market situation there are opportunities, especially with the earnings season around the corner to change market momentum and action. You don’t have to be smart to make money in the stock market because the way it moves is always changing. As such, what you need is to think differently and educate yourself, using home study packs and videos, especially mastering the earnings season for profitable trading and investing in any market situation/cycle. That means we do not equate an “up” market with a “good” market and vice–versa. Markets present different opportunities to make money at different times. Tuesday’s trading started on the upside and was sustained throughout the session, despite oscillating on demand and selloffs in high cap stocks that pushed the NSE index to an intra-day high of 24,152.67 basis points, from its low of 24,026.05bps, and thereafter closed the day higher at 24,097.48bps. The session’s market technicals were positive but weak as volume traded was lower than the previous session’s, in the midst of a negative breadth and mixed sentiment as revealed by Investdata’s Daily Sentiment Report, showing a ‘sell’ position of 43% and buy volume of 57%. Total daily transaction volume index stood at 0.65, just as the impetus behind the day’s performance stayed weak, with Money Flow Index reading 27.57 points, up from the previous 26.29ps, indicating that funds entered some stocks. Index and Market Caps At the close of Tuesday’s trading, the NSEASI gained 72.03 basis points, closing at 24,097.48bps, after opening at 24,026.05bps, representing a 0.30% rise, while market capitalization climbed N37.26bn up, closing at N12.57tr from an opening value of N12.53tr, representing a 0.30% appreciation in value. If you are yet to sign up for Investdata’s Buy and Sell signal setup, don’t delay. We have just added another risk management feature and six categories of stocksto see you through in this changing market dynamics and economic uncertainties. The day’s upturn was due to buying interests in Airtel Africa, BUA Cement, Zenith Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, UBA, FBNH, C&I Leasing, Redstar Express and PZ. These impacted mildly on the NSE’s benchmark index, reducing its Year-To-Date loss to 10.22%, as market capitalization YTD loss stood at N387.71bn, representing a 2.99% down from the year’s opening level. Mixed Sector indices The sectorial performance indexes were largely bearish, except for the NSE Banking and Industrial Goods indexes that closed higher by 0.92% and 0.09% respectively, while the NSE Insurance led the decliners by 1.92%, followed by Consumer Goods and Oil/Gas indexes which shed 0.52% and 0.02% respectively. Market breadth was negative as decliners outnumbered advancers in the ratio of 18:17, while transactions in volume and value terms were down by 18.01% and 6.61% respectively as investors exchanged 155.53m shares worth N2.6bn, from the previous day’s 189.69m units valued at N2.78bn. The day’s volume was boosted by trades in Guaranty Trust Bank, Access Bank, MTNN, UBA and Japaul Oil. The best performing stock of the day were Redstar Express and Wapic Insurance, after gaining 9.76% and 6.06% respectively, closing at N3.26 and N0.35 per share respectively on dividend expectation and market forces. On the flip side, Okomu Oil and Unilever lost 9.95% and 9.78%, closing at N69.70 and N12.45per share respectively on profit taking and selloffs. Market Outlook We expect the bearish mood to continue in the absence of positive fundamental news, as inconsistent government policies continue to dampen investor confidence ahead of the expectedly disappointing half-year corporate earnings reports. This is likely to support the wave of decline as pullbacks persisted, creating new entering opportunities. Money flow index has continued to look down at 26.29, despite flowing from one sector to the other, seeking value in terms of low prices with high upside potentials. This is just as economic recovery is threaten by increasing coronavirus new cases regardless of stimulus packages by government and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), ahead of the Q2 earnings reports, which implies that opportunities are still available as sectoral rotation continues. Also, sectors that have suffered oversold, so far, offer attractive risk-reward buy-opportunities and outlook for considerable short, medium and long term investment. For immediate liquidity or cash let us trade low priced stocks with serious caution to avoid being trapped. NGSE Rebounds, Despite Naira Devaluation Ahead Of Expected Weak Q2 Earnings Market Update for July 8 Equity prices closed higher on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) at the midweek, extending the previous session’s positive stance on interim dividend expectation among the first tier banking stocks especially, coupled with the positive news of crude oil price rebound at the international market. This is expected to support the nation’s economic fundamentals in the short-run, at a time the African Development Bank (AfDB) published its African Economic Outlook projecting that the Nigerian economic could contract by as much as 7.2%, depending on the duration and gravity of the Coronavirus pandemic. Wednesday’s rebound was also despite the official devaluation of the Naira to N380/US$1 in the midst of inconsistent government policies that are capable of rubbishing intervention efforts by the fiscal and monetary authorities to mitigate the effect of coronavirus outbreak and delay the expected recovery. The seeming rebound of the composite index is coming ahead of the expectedly weak quarterly corporate scorecards as earnings season kicks off next week. Investors are cautiously targeting fundamentally sound stocks with juicy underlying value, because this bargain hunting at this period may just be another dead cat bounce that may trap many players. Given that investors, have long before now, been factoring this expected disappointing half year results into their pricing metrics, negative reaction when the numbers finally hit the market may not be as severe. Investors and traders with understanding of how to profit from an earnings reporting season should take advantage of this momentum and actions. As we have alwaysnoted also, in any market situation there are opportunities, especially with the earnings season around the corner to change market momentum and action. Meanwhile, midweek’s trading opened green and closed higher, despite the wild volatility, renewed interest in financial services and industrial goods stocks, which pushed the NSE index to an intra-day high of 24,374.40 basis points, from its low of 24,026.05bps. Thereafter, the NSEASI finished the session higher at 24,278.07bps on a high traded volume. Wednesday’s market technicals were positive and strong as volume traded was higher than the previous session’s, with breadth favoring the bulls and positive sentiment as revealed by Investdata’s Daily Sentiment Report, showing a ‘buy’ position of 72% and sell volume of 28%. Total daily transaction volume index stood at 0.98, just as momentum behind the day’s performance stayed weak, with Money Flow Index reading 29.21points, up from the previous 27.57ps, indicating that funds entered some stocks. Index and Market Caps At the end of midweek’s trading, the All Share index gained 179.99 basis points, closing at 24,278.07bps, after opening at 24,097.48bps, representing a 0.75% growth, while market capitalization rose by N94.21bn, closing at N12.66tr from an opening value of N12.57tr, representing a 0.75% value gain in investors’ portfolios. If you are yet to sign up for Investdata’s Buy and Sell signal setup, don’t delay. We have just added another risk management feature and six categories of stocksto see you through in this changing market dynamics and economic uncertainties. Take advantage of this service to buy right and sell right at this current market oscillation and earnings reporting season for portfolio realignment and positioning as we await an economic reform policy to stimulate and re-track the economy again. The upturn for the session was driven by demand for Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank, Access Bank, UBA, FBNH, Julius Berger, Okomu Oil and Lafarge Africa, impacting positively on the NSE’s benchmark index. This reduced its Year-To-Date loss to 9.55%, just as market capitalization YTD loss stood at N293.50bn, representing a 2.24% down from the year’s opening level. Mixed Sector indices The sectorial performance indexes were largely bullish except for the NSE Consumer Goods and Oil/Gas indexes that closed lower by 0.21% and 0.18% respectively, while the NSE Banking led the advancers by 3.41%. It was followed by the Insurance and Industrial Goods indexes that shed 1.10% and 0.12% respectively. Market breadth turned positive as advancers outnumbered decliners in the ratio of 25:8, while activity in volume and value terms jumped by 49.56% and 80.77% respectively as investors exchanged 232.61m shares worth N4.7bn from the previous day’s 155.53m units valued at N2.6bn. Volume was boosted by trades in Fidelity Bank, MTNN, Lafarge Africa, Guaranty Trust Bank and Zenith Bank. Lafarge Africa and Julius Berger were the best performing stock, as they gained 10% and 9.90% respectively, closing at N11.00 and N17.20 per share respectively on low price attraction and market forces. On the flip side, Berger Paints and Caverton lost 9.63% and 4.40%, closing at N6.10 and N1.74 per share respectively on selloffs. Market Outlook We expect the mixed performance to continue as new of soaring oil prices supports Nigeria’s economic fundamentals, while inconsistent government policies continue to dampen investor confidence ahead of the expectedly disappointing half-year corporate earnings reports. This is likely to support the wave of decline as pullbacks persisted, creating new entering opportunities. Money flow index has continued to look up at 29.21, despite flowing from one sector to the other, seeking value in terms of low prices with high upsidepotentials. This is just as economic recovery is threatened by the rising cases of the COVID-19, ahead of the Q2 earnings reports season, which implies that opportunities are still available as sectoral rotation continues. Also, sectors that have suffered oversold, so far, offer attractive risk-reward buy-opportunities and outlook for considerable short, medium and long term investment.
