THE WRONG INVESTMENT Please Tell Me If I Got This Wrong? I could still remember the Copernican revolution which changed the conventional beliefs that the world was flat. During those period, the people of the world held the belief that the world was flat but only Copernican saw it as spherical. Although, it was later accepted but he had to proof it. Now, what kind of belief system do you have regarding the stock market? Is it the word of mouth of people? Is the 2007 market crash experience? Sincerely, whenever you are making decisions, you will make it based on what you know and believe. So, if what you believe will be at a disadvantage to you, so will it be. Similarly, whenever you ask a friend for an advice that you are going back into the stock market, Humm!!! They will tell you alot of negative stories about someone who invested and lost his money. Since 2007, why are you still dwelling in the past when the entire world has moved on. Don't also forget that the crash was not peculiar to Nigeria alone. So for me as the expert, I won't recommend neither that you should just go into market without planning. Just like me, after the crash, I went to acquire more knowledge and I realized that lack of knowledge was the major reason I lost in the stock market and ever since I have been organizing seminars to help people build their portfolio again then reduced their risk of loosing. In addition, I know that nothing is permanent except change, hence, I have been organizing seminars to help my clients build their portfolio. Investors Look To Thursday’s Session For Direction On NGSE Ahead Of Elections Market Update for February 13 Trading activities on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) at the midweek had a difficult and volatile session, halting the previous eight trading sessions of bull run on profit booking after the early hour rally failed on heightened political risk ahead of the all-defining Presidential and National Assembly elections of Saturday, February 16, 2019. It is not known whether the continued political tension arising from the arrest warrant of the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, issued by the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) on Wednesday, despite the ruling of the Court of Appeal, as well as the lingering insecurity in the northeast has anything to do with the slide in the NSE’s All Share index, on a day the two leading candidates- incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (APC) and former Vice President of the Country, signed a peace accord. The changing dynamics in Nigeria’s political environment has already with the disregard and disrespect for the constitution have led to fear which triggered selloff as buying interest among investors slowed down. Midweek’s decline was despite the seeming positive economic data released on Tuesday, showing that non-oil sector recovery boosted the nation’s GDP to 1.93% according to the 2018 report of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) (READ HERE). Also, the decline in NSEASI occurred on a day the NBS published the Capital Importation Report for 2018 Q4 and full year, showing that despite a decline in the final quarter, there was a growth for the year over the preceding one (READ MORE). The NSE Index opened Wednesday’s trading on a gap up in the morning, but pulled back between mid-morning and midday before retracing up in the afternoon session on demand for industrial and consumer goods stocks, a situation that supported a rebound, resulting in a marginal loss for the day. However, the NSEASI touched intraday highs of 32,635.13 basis points from a low of 32,267.37bps on profit taking in banking and insurance stocks to close the session at 32,413.92bps. Market technicals at the midweek were weak, as volume traded was lower than previous session in the midst of a negative breadth and mixed sentiment as revealed by Investdata’s Daily Sentiment Report, showing a buying volume of 40% and selling position of 60%, while daily transaction volume index stood at 1.44. The momentum behind the day’s market performance was up, despite the profit taking as shown by 74.07 point money flow index, from previous day’s 72.95bps, indicating that funds are leaving some stocks to enter others. Index and Market Cap The NSE’s benchmark All Share index at the end session shed 48.39bps, to close at 32,413.92 after opening at 32,462.31bps, representing a 0.15% decline, while market capitalization dropped N18bn to close at N12.09 trillion, from the opening value of N12.11 trillion. This represented a 0.15% value loss. Attention: Join Investdata buy and sell signal setup to get all our in-depths analysis on the picture and to get access to our carefully created watch list. To become a member, send ‘YES’ or ‘STOCKS’ to the phone numbers below. The number of stocks on our watchlist has increased due to the prolonged market correction. Take advantage of this service to buy right and sell right. Midweek downturn was driven by profit taking in Seplat, Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank, FBNH, UBA, Access Bank, Dangote Flour and Forte Oil, among others. This impacted negatively on Year-to-Date gain, reducing it to 3.13%, while market capitalization gain dropped slightly also to N367bn from the year’s opening level of N11.72tr, also representing a 3.13% growth. Mixed Sectors Indices The sectoral performances indexes were largely bearish, except for the NSE Industrial and Consumer goods sectors that closed higher as investor positioned in stocks like Dangote Cement, CCNN, and others. Market breadth remained positive with decliners outnumbering advancers in the ratio of 22:19. Market activities were down in volume and value by 18.95% and 47.20% respectively to 479.3m shares worth N4.24bn, from previous day’s 580.41m units valued at N8.03bn. Transaction volume was largely driven by financial services and conglomerates stocks like: Diamond Bank, Zenith Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, Transcorp and Access Bank. Berger Paints and Unilever were the best performing stocks for the day, topping the advancers table with 10% each to close at N8.25 and N44.00 respectively on expectation of Q4 earnings reports and high dividend yield respectively. The flipside was led by C & I Leasing and Champion Breweries which shed 10% and 7.85% respectively to close at N7.33 and N1.61 each, on the back of profit taking and reconstruction . Market Outlook We expect this ongoing trend and volatility to persist, as investors and traders reposition for 2019 dividend declaration season and post-election rally which are expected to shape market performance in the interim. We advise cautious trading and investing while positioning in fundamentally sound equities. As early filers like United Capital, Africa Prudential, NB, Forte Oil and other are expected to hit the market with their numbers any moment from now. Volatility will also continue as investors and fund managers reposition their portfolios, with eyes fixed on political space and ahead of January inflation data, which is another factor likely to drive prices north, or south, while determining market direction before or after the Presidential Election. Investors should review their positions in line with their investment goals, strength of the company numbers and act as events unfold in the global and domestic environment. However, we would like to reiterate our advice that investors should go for equities with intrinsic value, We advise investors to allow numbers guide their decisions while repositioning in any stock, especially now that stock prices remain low in the midst of mixed company numbers, weak economic and market fundamentals.. https://investdata.com.ng/2019/02/investors-look-to-thursdays-session-for-direction-on-ngse-ahead-of-elections/

NGSE Index Builds Momentum Ahead Of Presidential Poll, GDP, Inflation Data Market Update for February 11 Activities on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Monday had another interesting and volatile session to close higher and extend its seventh consecutive days of bull transition on a high volume traded and positive sentiments for financial services stocks. The NSE All Share index made a new year-to-date high despite the political tension ahead of Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections, after retesting the recent resistance level of 31,891.23 basis points on increasing momentum. “Followers of the Smart Money Indicator — which says that the “dumb money” trades at the open while the more restrained “smart money” trades at the end of the day — will find this analysis useful.” If we would use just one characteristic to describe the Nigerian equity market’s performance so far in 2019, late session strength may be the most applicable. Heading into Monday, the NSE’s benchmark index has consistently climbed up in the final hour of trading for the past seven days, except for last Friday when it witnessed a pullback in the final hour. In the prior four sessions of down market, the last hour of trading saw positive returns 8.33% of the time from January 10. This kind of late session strength doesn’t occur often. Money Flow Index, which tracks smart money or institutional investors’ movement of funds climbed from 19.80 points on January 17 to 71.70 points on Monday, an indication that funds continues to enter the market all this time despite the mixed sentiment. Monday’s trading started out on the upside in the morning, which was sustained till midday to early afternoon before pulling back on profit taking in some stocks. However, the NSEASI for the session touched intraday highs of 31,891.23bps from a low of 31,515,44bps on strong buying of banking and insurance stocks. This consolidated the previous day’s trading position, after which it closed the session at 31,781.87bps. Market technicals for Monday were positive and strong, despite the high volume traded which was lower than previous session’s in the midst of a strong breadthand sentiment as revealed by Investdata’s Daily Sentiment Report, showing 71% buy volume with 29% sell position. The day’s transaction volume index stood at 1.67. The momentum behind the day’s market performance was up, as shown by the 70.7bps money flow index, from previous day’s 64.52bps, an indication that funds are entering the market and some stocks. Index and Market Cap The NSE benchmark index on Monday gained 251.95 bps to close at 31,781.87bps having opened at 31, 529.92bps, representing 0.80% growth; while market capitalization rose by N93.96bn at N11.85tr, from the opening value of N11.76tr. This represented a 0.80% value gain. The session’s upturn was attributed to price appreciation by stocks like: Nestle, Guaranty Trust Bank, Stanbic IBTC, Zenith Bank, FBNH, UBA, Access Bank, Dangote Flour and Dangote Sugar, among others. This lifted Year-to-Date gain to 1.12%, while market capitalization gained N131.24bn from the year’s opening level of N11.72trillion, also representing a 1.12% growth. Bullish Sectors Indices All the sectorial indexes were in the green, with the NSE Banking index gaining 1.92% to lead the day, even as market breadth remained positive with advancers outnumbering decliners in the ratio of 41:10. Market activities were down in volume and value by 23.72% and 53.79% respectively to 551.59m shares worth N5.65bn, from previous day’s 723.54m units valued at N12.21bn. Transaction volume was largely driven by financial services and conglomerates stocks like: Access Bank, UBA, Diamond Bank, Zenith Bank and Transcorp. Cadbury and Oandowere the best performing stocks for the day, topping the advancers table with 10% each to close at N11.00 and N5.50 respectively on market forces and sentiment ahead of Q4 earnings reports. The flipside was led by C & I Leasing and Medview Airline, shedding 9.96% and 8.11% respectively to close at N8.14 and N1.70 each, on the back of correction after its share reconstruction, as well as profit taking respectively. Market Outlook We expect the ongoing volatility to persist, as investors and traders reposition for 2019 dividend declaration season and post-election rally which are expected to shape market performance in the interim. We advise cautious trading and investing while positioning in fundamentally sound equities. Volatility will also continue as investors and fund managers reposition their portfolios, with eyes fixed on political space and ahead of 2018 full year GDP report expected to hit the market on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, as well as the January inflation data that could come before the presidential election. These are likely to drive prices north, or south, while determining market direction before or after the Presidential Election. Investors should review their positions in line with their investment goals, strength of the company numbers and act as events unfold in the global and domestic environment. However, we would like to reiterate our advice that investors should go for equities with intrinsic value, We advise investors to allow numbers guide their decisions while repositioning in any stock, especially now that stock prices remain low in the midst of mixed company numbers, weak economic and market fundamentals. https://investdata.com.ng/2019/02/ngse-index-builds-momentum-ahead-of-presidential-poll-gdp-inflation-data/

Investdata Price & Earnings Tracking For Week Ended February 8, 2019 https://investdata.com.ng/2019/02/investdata-price-earnings-tracking-for-week-ended-february-8-2019/
|
Short-term Mixed Outlook On NGSE, Amidst Election Fever, Expected Q4 GDP, Inflation Data Market Update for the week ended February 8 and Outlook for February 11-15 The benchmark All Share index of Nigeria’s stock market finished last week with a significant gain enough to reverse previous week’s down market after a five-day gain, despite the huge last minute profit taking on Friday that slowed down the bull-run. During Friday’s session, investors really stepped down their buying interest in the afternoon to erase high proportion of gains earlier recorded. This was a microcosm of the intraday buying trend we have seen in the recent rebound since January 10 shift in the market’s year to date negative position to positive territory. The turn came on the back of expected 2019 dividend declaration by quoted companies with December year end. The seeming positive sentiment for earnings season and post-election rally which had triggered huge trade volume in recent weeks was despite the countdown and heightened political risk ahead of next Saturday’s Presidential election. This indicates gradual position taking by smart money in the nation financial markets due to a combination of factors such as the high dividend yield of listed companies, high interest rate in the money market and others considered good enough to offset lower yields in developed market. The situation is especially true after the U.S Federal Reserve Bank signaled a dovish stance on rates this year. There is also the assumption of limited policy changes in Nigeria, should the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari be re-elected, just as the emergence of Atiku Abubakar, candidate of Nigeria’s main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the ballot, with his proposed economic policy reforms that sound more pro-market. Last week’s bull-run may be the outcome of investors calculating that they have nothing to lose from either of the candidates after all, especially those taking position in equity market ahead of earnings season. The election is holding in a week when a major economic report- Nigeria’s Q4 and full year Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and January inflation data will be released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). They will be followed almost by the early filings of corporate earnings. Factors expected to drive the nation’s GDP and Inflation data include the trend of global crude oil prices in Q4 and January respectively, as well as the lingering trade tension between the U.S and China, in addition to policy normalization in the U.S. We should also not lose sight of the moderate expansion in three major sectors: Agriculture, Industries and Services in Q4 2018 relative to the previous quarter. Inflation rate may likely slide down marginally due to January effect on consumption, school fee paying period and after expenses associated with December and New year festivities. Back to the market, last week was a positive one, driven by earnings expectations as many market players took position in blue chip stocks, especially banking ahead of the release of their 2018 full year results. The NSE’s benchmark index opened the week on a positive note, gaining 0.35% which was sustained throughout the week with 0.09%, 0.16%, 1.98% and 0.31% respectively, on increasing demand for stocks, bringing the week’s cumulative gains to 2.92%. This therefore wiped off the market’s year-to-date loss, which now standing at 0.32%, after consolidating previous week’s gain. The mixed sentiment in the last 28 trading sessions in 2019 was due to increased bargain hunting as the NSEASI broke out its first strong resistance level in 2019 to form a double top that supports a pullback due to profit booking in apprehension of next Saturday election outcome. Momentum behind the week’s performance was up, despite the tension arising from the next Saturday’s Presidential polls, as reflected in the money flow index of 36.51 basis points, as against 27.97bps in previous week. This is an indication that funds are entering the market as volume traded is looking up with increasing number of stocks appreciating in price. Equity Indicators Last Week The NSEASI for the period under review gained 893.56bps to close at 31,529.92bps, after opening at 30,636.36bps, touching a high of 31,428.64bps on a very high traded volume that reflected strength. It also revealed a strong buying interest during the week, representing a 2.92% growth. Similarly, market capitalization was up by N333.55bn to close at N11.76tr, up from N11.42tr, representing 2.92% appreciation in value, which impacted positively on the NSEASI’s year-to-date at 0.32%. Also, market capitalization turned positive, at N63.25bn, compared to the year’s opening value of N11.72tr, representing a 0.32% growth. NSEASI Weekly Time Frame The market index remained bullish on daily and weekly time frame as MACD has crossed the signal line, as the index closed above it 20 day moving average on a high volume and MFI looking up. Bullish Sectoral Indices The sectoral performance indices for the week were largely bullish as they closed higher, with the NSE banking index leading after chalking 8.10%, driven by increased buying interest in Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank, UBA, Access Bank and Fidelity Bank and Sterling Bank, among others. The Consumer Goods index followed with 4.10% rise on the back of gains by Nestle, Dangote Sugar and Dangote Flour, while the NSE Insurance index garnered 4.00% on the strength of Regency Assurance, Aiico Insurance and NEM Insurance, among others. Market breadth for the week remained positive, with advancers ’outnumbering decliners in the ratio of 53:21, to halt the previous week’s down market. Market activities were up in volume and value by 30.42% and 81.80% respectively at 1.89bn shares worth N26.88bn, up from previous week’s 1.45bn units valued at N14.79bn. The best performing stocks for week were Regency Assurance and Dangote Flour topping the advancers’ table with 19.05% and 18.10% gains respectively to close at N0.25 and N6.85 per share on low price attraction and market trend. On the other hand, Royal Exchange Assurance and Guinea Insurance lost 13.33% and 13.04% respectively, closing at N0.26 and N0.20 on market forces and profit taking after topping the gainers chart last week. Market Outlook We believe the market will slow down due to profit booking from early rally witnessed last week which was driven by repositioning ahead of dividend declaration by major quoted companies. As such, we maintain a mixed outlook on the market in the short termover election anxieties. Alongside, the expected release of Q4 GDP and Inflation data reports from NBS. The possibility of slowdown in position taking on blue-chips stocks for short term gains has increased; however, gains recorded in the two previous weeks are not sustainable in the near term owing to the elevated risk in the domestic and external market. The ongoing volatility will persist as investors and fund managers reposition their portfolios, with eyes fixed on political space and ahead of full year company earnings position and post-election market dynamics. Volatility, Profit Booking Linger, As Investors Bet On Nigeria’s Presidential Poll Market Update for February 4 The nation’s equity market on Monday continued its volatility, closing higher on positive sentiments for blue chip stocks as investors positioned ahead for possible pre and post-election rally just 12 days to the much awaited February 16 Presidential polls that will determine the fate of Nigeria as a nation in the next four years. The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) benchmark All-Share index opened for trading on the upside in the morning and rose all-day, before closing above its opening level, forming an inverteds head and shoulder chart pattern that supports uptrend, depending on the interplay between market forces. The index touched intraday high of 30,754.09 basis points from a low of 30,636.36bps before finishing at the session at 30,745.05bps on a low traded volume and high buying pressure. With the earnings reporting season expected to kick off this month and early filers approach the market with their numbers, many companies have notified the NSE of their board meetings to consider and approval 2018 financial statement. Some banks have submitted their score-cards to their primary regulator- the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for review and approval, prior to presentation to the market. These are likely to influence investing public demand for stocks, especially the dividend paying companies with history of growing their payout on dividend equalization policy, as well as those with robust Q3 Dividend Yields. The global markets and economic sentiment in January had a big rebound in expectation of that the trade dispute between the U.S and China, the world’s two largest economies will be resolved, oil price will recover and there will be a slowdown in U.S rate normalization. These are likely to have positive impact on an emerging markets going forward. The economic activities in the manufacturing sector continued to expand in January, although it came slower as expected. In the month of January, where all we heard was the story of slowdown, January effect, political uncertainty and others, the nation’s Purchasing Managers’ Index, as released by CBN showed that activities in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector dropped to 58.83 points, from 61.2 point in December. Equity market technicals on Monday were positive, although mixed as transaction volume came lower, when compared to the previous session in the midst of a negative breadth and strong buying interest for stocks as revealed by Investdata’s Daily Sentiment Report, showing buy volume of 92% and 8% sell position. Volume index for the day was 0.51. The energy behind the day’s market performance was slightly down, despite the up market as shown by the 53.92bps money flow index, from previous day’s 55.08bps, an indication that funds left some stocks and entered some others. Index and Market Cap At the close of Monday’s trading, the All Share index gained 108.69bps, closing at 30,745.05bps having opened at 30,636.36bps, representing 0.35% growth; while market capitalization climbed N40.53bn up, closing at N11.46tr from the opening value of N11.42tr, representing a 0.35% value gain. To become a member, send ‘YES’ or ‘STOCKS’ to the phone numbers below. The number of stocks on our watchlist has increased due to the prolonged market correction. Take advantage of this service to buy right and sell right. Monday’s upturn was attributed to buying interest in banking and consumer goods stocks like Nigerian Breweries, Guaranty Trust Bank, Access Bank, UBA, Stanbic IBTC and FBNH, among others. This impacted positively on Year-to-Date loss, reducing it to 2.18%, while the loss in market capitalization reduce to N321.54bn, from the year’s opening level of N11.72tr, representing a 2.18% decline. Mixed Sectors Indices The sectoral indices performance was largely bullish, except for the NSE Oil/Gas that closed in the red due to profit taking in Forte Oil, Oando and Total Nigeria, while market breadth was negative with decliners outnumbering advancers in the ratio of 20:17. Market activities were equally down in volume and value by 32.21% and 76.95%, as 183.67m shares changed hands for N1.04bn, from previous day’s 270.94m units valued at N4.42bn. Transaction volume was driven by financial services and conglomerates stocks like: Fidelity Bank, Transcorp, Diamond Bank, Zenith Bank and UBA. Ikeja Hotel and Redstar Express were the best performing stocks for the day, gaining 10% each to close at N1.65 and N5.50 respectively on market forces and impressive Q3 numbers, The flipside was led by Champion Breweries and Academy Press, as they shed 10% and 8.89% respectively to close at N1.62 and N0.41 each, on the back of their unimpressive earnings report and market forces. Market Outlook We expect the volatility and profit booking to continue, as elections dates draw closer heating up the political environment, a situation that continue to weigh down the bourse as investors and traders reposition for 2019 dividend declaration season that will shape market performance after the elections. We advise cautious trading and investing while positioning in fundamentally sound equities. Volatility will also persist as investors and fund managers reposition their portfolios, with eyes fixed on political space and ahead of full year company earnings position and post-election market dynamics. Experts decry budget delays, seek quick passage of 2019 budget By Chinyere Joel-Nwokeoma Financial experts on Monday called for speedy passage of the 2019 budget saying incessant delay in the approval of budgets over the years contributed to the downturn in the economy. They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews in Lagos that the legislature needed to fast track the passage of the budget to kickstart economic activities in the new year. Prof. Sheriffdeen Tella, Professor of Economics, Olabisi Onabanjo University Ago-Iwoye, Ogun, said perennial delays in passing yearly budgets showed that the legislature was ignorant of its responsibility. “The perennial delay in passing budgets indicates that the legislature is either ignorant of this responsibility or deliberately frustrating the efforts of the executive arm to perform,” tella said. Budget cycle since 2008 Budget cycle since 2008 He said early passage of the budget would promote economic growth and development. “The Nigerian economy depends on government’s budget to function properly. The private sector particularly needs to see government direction to plan and execute their plans. “Early passage of budget helps in this regard. The private sector is the major participant in the capital market. “Growth enhancing activities in the capital market are negatively affected by the delay in passing the budget,” tella said. He noted that passing the federal budget in good time was capable of promoting economic growth, assisting private sector for optimal business performance as well as energising money and capital market activities. Tella explained that early budget passage would promote planing in the lower levels of governments and the private sector. Mr Sola Oni, a chartered stockbroker and Chief Executive Officer, Sofunix Investment and Communications, said delay in the passage of the budget was highly injurious to economic growth and development. “Budget sends signals to stockbrokers and other investment advisers on the sectors to watch and where to raise red flags annually. “This enables them to advise their clients on taking positions and reviewing their portfolios accordingly. “At macro level, early passage of the budget implies prompt implementation of capital projects. This is critical to the growth of the economy as it has impact on growing the Gross Domestic Products (GDP),” oni said. He emphasised that the executive and the National Assembly should be on the same page in terms of timing. “It has become a recurring decimal for both parties to be enmeshed in controversies either politically motivated or genuine,” he stated. Also speaking, Mr Ambrose Omordion, the Chief Operating Officer, InvestData Ltd., said the budgeting cycle of Nigeria was already a problem and concern for Nigerians as business plans were affected with late submission and approval. Omordion said the delay and implementation style had made the budget less meaningful and impactful. He said capital projects must wait for approval before commencement of work, while recurrent expenses would be running. “For our budget to make meaning and drive economic activities, the executive and legislature need to have a re-think and restore the nation’s fiscal year to January and December. “In the last 11 years, the only year the budget was approved early was in 2013, Feb. 26, because that was the earliest time the budget was submitted on Oct. 10, 2012,” Omordion said. https://www.nan.ng/economy/experts-decry-budget-delays-seek-quick-passage-of-2019-budget/

Feb Outlook: All Eyes On Elections, Economy, Earnings Season For NGSE Direction January market Roundup and Outlook for February The bear ascendency on the Nigerian stock market in 2018 extended into the first month of 2019 with mixed sentiments on the back of weak economic indices, the political risk ahead of the general elections which begins this month with the Presidential and National Assembly vote. There was also no denying the impact of the January effects on the market’s performance, all of which forced the NSE’s benchmark All-Share index for the period to close lower for the month. It is obvious that election seasons are characterized with uncertainties which affect domestic and international investor confidence in the market and the economy; especially with recent drama that continues to unfold between the judiciary and executive. The drama had triggered the pullback witnessed till the last trading of the month, just after the market had recorded had rallied for six consecutive days. The mixed market in January was driven by the low price attractions, just as the seeming improvement in economic activities were influenced by year-end festivities as reflected in the Purchasing Managers’ Index, which soared to 61.1 points in December 2018, just as inflation rate climbed to 11.44% in the midst of heightening political tension ahead of the elections. The Central Bank of Nigerian continued to intervene in the Investor & Exporter window of the foreign exchange market, a situation that has supported the relative stability in exchange rate, which helped manufacturers. However, weak purchasing power among Nigerians affected sales, as is being reflected in the corporate earnings of consumer goods companies released in so far to the market. The market in the 22 trading sessions of January had mixed performance, with 11 sessions each of up and down market, after which the index closed negative at 30,557.20 points on Thursday, January 31, after touching the month high of 31,457.07 basis points and low of 29,329.62bps. The index opened for the month at 31,430.50bps, representing 2.78% decline over the period, with buying volume of total transactions for the month at 58%, while selling position was 42% to reverse the previous month’s bull market. Also, market capitalisation for the month lost a total of N325.79bn to close at N11.39tr, from its opening value of N11.72tr, representing 2.78% depreciation in value, following the mixed market expectation of the 2018 full year earnings reporting season due to weak economic fundamentals. At the moment, many stocks continue to trade below their Book Value and at new 52-week lows. Market breadth for the month was negative and mixed as decliners outnumbered advancers in the ratio of 53:18 to halt the bull transition of December Santa Claus as well as the OPEC supply cut induced rally. Sectorial Performance for the month was largely bearish, except for the NSE Industrial goods that closed green for the period on the strength of gains by Dangote Cement, Beta Glass, CCNN and Lafarge Africa. Others were in red as showed in the bar chart below: Best Performing Stock The month’s biggest advancers were the kobo and medium cap stocks, which were grossly impacted by low price attraction and sentiment. The best performing stock for the month was Royal Exchange Assurance, which gained 31.82% of its opening price, despite its mixed quarterly financials released to the market. It is safe to warn that investors avoid being trapped with this uptrend, instead, we advice that you study the company’s fundamentals before jumping in. Julius Berger was next, as its share price rose 29.35% on improving earnings and low valuations; followed by Sterling Bank’s 25.29%; and 23.71% by Cement Company of Northern Nigerian. Worst Performing Stocks The worst performing stocks table was led by McNichols, which lost 29.79%; Flour Mills, 19.70%; and GSK, 19.66%. Volume and Value The month’s transaction volume was down by 13.01% to 6.22bn shares, from 7.15bn in December. During the month, quarterly and some full-year earnings reports were published by an array of companies, with numbers coming below expectation except for Redstar and University that were above average. Also, in the month January, Lafarge Africa and Sahco concluded their primary activities while May & Baker listed additional shares as a results of right issue or bonus shares. The good news here is that the companies above had ushered in the earnings season with mixed and unimpressive numbers from the consumer goods to give insight what the market should expect from December year end accounts. As traders and investors position for earnings season amidst political tension, decision on whether to HOLD, BUY or SELL would depend on whether earnings beat market expectation and shareholders are rewarded adequately in the expected full year results. Also, it is expected that up movement in crude oil price will support faithful implementation of Nigeria’s 2019 budget and economic recovery. Considering these factors and election season around the market now, investors who understand the operations of the stock market should take this pullback wave opportunity to enter good stocks as more than 100 quoted companies with December 31, 2018 as their financial year end are due to release their audited report to the market before March 31. It is obvious that investment is against expectation, therefore, when such expectation is not met there is need to cut losses quickly to protect your capital. As investors, it is expected that you relate the current selling price of target stock on the floor of the exchange with its third quarter earnings; as well as previous full-year Earnings Per Share; and the last dividend paid. This comparison will help you to project whether the company would likely maintain; cut or increase its payout or not before buying in. Note that earnings have always been a function of equity price movements, in addition to corporate actions of these companies, which are expected to attract more market players, dividend investors and possibly foreign bargain hunters to the market. What to expect in February and March • Continued volatility due to the lingering political tension, profit taking and disappointments with some corporate results released. Also the source of funds flow to the market may cause fluctuations as foreign and institutional investors return to the market. The up and down movement will continue to create entry and exit opportunities. • More audited earnings would be released into the market this period. Earnings from blue chip companies may strengthen market fundamentals. Especially from United Capital, Forte Oil, Nigerian Breweries and Nestle Nigeria. • As investors reshuffle their portfolio to moving into equities with strong fundamentals, high Dividend Yield and possibility of issuing bonus shares, we should expect stock prices to be in the upward direction, if their numbers beat expectation. • A more vibrant market as a result of market players positioning for the last month of the quarter and then taking profit to reposition for the earnings season, even as we expect liquidity prices to improve with more foreign funds entering. • Market outlook for the month of February and March are still very dicey, but investors should decide wisely, using dates, bids, offers and volume while doing so. • Managing risk and protecting capital at this point is very important, so you will be able to determine when to buy or sell by watching the stocks and the market, using technical analysis, aided by investdata buy & sell signal. • Let numbers emanating from companies and releases/markdown dates guide you into profitable investment. Profit Taking, Volatility Slows Down, As Earnings Seasons Beckons Market Update for January 30 Trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange at the midweek was a mixed session, extending its three consecutive days of bear-run as profit taking persisted. There was however a seeming reduction in the losing momentum on a low traded volume that reveals a slowdown in selling pressure, ahead of next the February 16 Presidential and National Assembly elections, even as investors continue to follow keenly the developments in the political space. The NSE All Share index started out with a very brief pullback in the morning, but retraced up marginally by the midmorning to midday, but came down almost immediately on the back of very weak second and third quarter earnings reports released by Guinness Nigeria, Flour Mills and Honeywell (READ) respectively during trading. One common denominator in the score-cards was the decline in earnings power as reflected on their top and bottom lines attributed to weak demand and high cost of production. The index pulled back in wedge to consolidate the previous day’s position after touching intraday low of 31,143.37 basis points from a high of 31,202.30bps, after which it rebounded slightly in the last few minutes of the day to close the session at 31,145.34bps in a 5-wave decline, the fifth wave being very strong, but was weakened by political risk selloff to end the day lower. The increasing number of notification for board meeting dates to approve 2018 financial year scorecards should also guide dividend income investors on how to start positioning ahead of release date, because it is not all companies that need regulators’ approval before making their numbers available to investors. These notifications to the NSE and the quarterly results should give insight on which sector or industry you build tents now. Wednesday’s market technicals were negative and mixed with the lower volume traded than previous session’s in the midst of a positive breadth and high selling pressure for stocks as revealed by Investdata’s Daily Sentiment Report, showing sell volume of 93% and 7% buy position. Volume index for day’ was 0.69. The energy behind the day’s market performance was up despite the profit taking as reflected in 63.86bps money flow index, from previous day’s 62.07bps, an indication that funds are entering some stocks as the number of advancers were more than losers in the market for the day. Index and Market Cap The benchmark index at the end of the session shed a marginal 33.37bps, closing at 31,145,34bps after opening at 31,178.71bps, representing 0.11% decline; while market capitalization dropped by N12.45bn, closing at N11.61tr from the opening value of N11.63tr, representing a 0.11%value loss. The downturn was attributed to profit taking in banking stocks and selloffs in consumer goods like Flour Mills, Dangote Sugar, Nestle, Guaranty Trust Bank, Access Bank, Zenith Bank and FBNH, among others, pushing Year-to-Date loss to 0.91%. The loss in market capitalization increased to N106.46 billion, from the year’s opening level N11.72tr, representing a 0.91% decline. Mixed Sectors Indices The sectoral indices resisted further decline as all closed higher, except for the NSE consumer goods index that was hit with selloffs due to unimpressive quarterly results by companies in the sector previously mentioned. Market breadth turned positive with advancers outnumbering decliners in the ratio of 23:19. Market activities were mixed as volume traded was down by 30.58% to 249.54m shares from the previous 359.51m units, while value went up by 63.35% to N3.12bn from Tuesday’s N1.91bn. Transaction volume was driven by financial services stocks like: Zenith Bank, Access Bank, Sterling Bank, Diamond Bank and UBA. Cornerstone Insurance and Mutual Benefits Assurance were the best performing stocks, gaining 10% each to close at N0.22 and N0.22 apiece on market forces. The flipside was led by Newest ASL and Lasaco Assurance, which lost 9.79%and 9.38% respectively each to close at N6.45 and N0.29 respectively, on the news of delisting and market forces. Market Outlook We expect the lingering profit taking and volatility to slowdown ahead of the outcome of National Judicial Council meeting, especially as companies like United Capital, Transcorp, Access Bank, UBA, Berger Paints and others have notified the exchange of their board of directors meeting to approve 2018 full year results. Despite the political tension that continues as the elections draw closer by the day, with market players taking advantage of cheap assets to position in value stocks ahead of 2019 dividend declaration season that will shape market performance after the elections. We advise cautious trading and investing why positioning in fundamentally sound equities. Volatility will also persist as investors and fund managers reposition their portfolios, with eyes fixed on political space and ahead of full year company earnings position and post-election market dynamics. These are likely to drive prices north, or south, while determining market direction before or after the Presidential Election. Investors should review their positions in line with their investment goals, strength of the company numbers and act as events unfold in the global and domestic environment. However, we would like to reiterate our advice that investors should go for equities with intrinsic value, We advise investors to allow numbers guide their decisions while repositioning in any stock, especially now that stock prices remain low in the midst of mixed company numbers, weak economic and market fundamentals Ambrose Omordion CRO|Investdata Consulting Ltd info@investdataonline.com info@investdata.com.ng ambrose.o@investdataonline.com ambroseconsultants@yahoo.com Tel: 08028164085, 08032055467 https://investdata.com.ng/2019/01/profit-taking-volatility-slows-down-as-earnings-seasons-beckons/

Political Tension: Profit Taking, Volatility, May Persist As Investors Reposition For Earnings Market Update for January 29 Tuesday’s trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) was once again bearish as the composite All-Share index suffered huge loss extend two days of profit booking and selloff which has been blamed on the recent drama in the political environment. The occurrence has triggered domestic and international concerns ahead of the February 16 Presidential election, sending negative signals into an already struggling economy. The session started out gapping down, and then continued downward, stair-stepping all day, forming bear flags and wedges. It pulled back to some of the deepest levels right into the close of the day after touching intraday low of 31,178.71 basis points from a high of 31,334.61bps which was lower than it opening on a high traded volume and amidst negative sentiments. It was one of the worse days in the past 14 trading sessions. It is obvious that the panic button has been activated. Remember that in May 2018 when the crises started with ward congresses in many states, which worsened in July by massive defections across the political parties even before the campaigns kicked off later in the year. There was however relative calm ever since until the plot to, until last week’s eventual removal of the Chief Justice of Nigeria. Market technicals for the day were negative with the higher volume traded than previous session’s in the midst of a negative breadth and sentiment for stocks as revealed by Investdata’s Daily Sentiment Report, showing sell position of 100% and 0% buy volume. Volume index for day’ was 0.92 The momentum behind the day’s market performance was down to reflect profit taking as shown by 62.07bps money flow index, from previous day’s 64.05bps, an indication that funds are leaving some stocks and the market. Index and Market Cap At the close of the day’s trading, the NSEASI lost 165.53bps, closing at 31,178.71bps after opening at 31,344.24bps, representing 0.53% decline; while market capitalization dropped by N61.72bn, closing at N11.63tr from the opening value of N11.69tr, representing a 0.53% depreciation in value. The downturn resulted from selloff in Nigerian Breweries, Guaranty Trust Bank, Access Bank, Zenith Bank, Flourmills and Dangote Sugar, among others, pushing Year-to-Date loss to 0.80%, while the loss in market capitalization increased to N100.01bn, from the year’s opening level N11.72tr, representing a 0.89% decline. Bearish Sectors Indices The exchange yielded to profit taking reflected in all sectoral indices as they closed lower, while market breadth stayed negative with decliners outweighing advancers in the ratio of 30:14. Market activities were however up in volume and value by 61.44% and 3.80% as 359.51m shares worth N1.91bn, from previous day’s 222.69m units which hands for N1.84bn. Transaction was driven by financial services stocks like: Consolidated Hallmark Insurance, UBA, Sterling Bank and Diamond Bank. Redstar Express and UACN Property were the best performing stocks for the day, gaining 10% and 9.55% respectively to close at N5.50 and N1.72 each on impressive Q3 numbers and market forces. The flipside was led by Neimeth Pharmaceuticals and Academy Press losing the maximum 10% each to close at N0.63and N0.45 respectively, on poor Q1 earnings report and market forces. Why Some Missed Out in Technical Analysis Goodies Like I said before in my previous article, many failed to train on technical analysis tools due to some arguments that as far as I am concern, are baseless. I have gathered eight ( of such myths, and in simple terms will debunk them one by one. With a learning mind, kindly follow me into today’s discussion. Some of the myths are; 1.Technical analysis is only for short-term trading or day trading. It is a common myth that technical analysis is only appropriate for short-term and computer-driven trading like day trading and high-frequency trades. Please understand that technical analysis existed and was practiced before computers were common, and some of the pioneers in technical analysis were long-term investors and traders, not day traders. Technical analysis is used by traders on all time frames, from 1-minute charts to weekly, monthly, annually and quarterly charts. 2. Only individual traders use technical analysis. While individuals do use technical analysis, may I tell you that hedge funds, market makers and investment banks also make good use of technical analysis as well, in fact, most will never trade without first understanding the trend of their equities of choice. May I also inform you, that Investment banks have dedicated trading teams that use technical analysis in guiding their investment various decisions. In other words, high-frequency trading, which encompasses a significant amount of the trading volume on the stock exchanges, is heavily dependent on technical concepts. Meanwhile, it is no more news that these sets of people chiefly dictates market direction while individual investors, due to their low portfolios sizes swim within their decisions for timely profit. Should you therefore attempt one sided analysis (either technical analysis or fundamental) you stand a chance of reducing your winning trades. *For Technical Analysis Trainings and Installation of Technical Tools for Single Users (individual) or Groups (offices), contact: Jeariogbe Tunde Segun (Independent Equities Market Analyst) on 08098865598.
