Huge NGSE Recovery Cuts YTD Loss To 1.34%, As MPC Opens First Meeting Of 2019 Market Update for the week ended January 18 and Outlook for January 21-25 The second full trading week of the year ended on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Friday, with the benchmark All-Share index closing higher, besides having a positive momentum to halt two previous weeks of bear-run. This was helped by renewed buying interest big cap stocks, ahead of the earnings season and regardless of political uncertainties ahead of the country’s February 16 Presidential election. This is the first of its kind in 18 months, driven by aggressive bargain hunting for major blue-chips stocks led by Dangote Cement and Nestle, as Institutional investors with long term view of the market latch on their low valuations and high Dividend Yields to position for 2019 dividend declaration. The macroeconomic data released so far this year have been positive and mixed. For instance, the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for the month of December stood at 61.1 point, revealing faster expansion in the manufacturing sector, a reflection increased patronage as part of year-end festivities. Consumer price index for December 2018 rose by 11.44%, up from 11.28% in the preceding month according the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reports released in the early in the week. Since the market rebounded on a strong buying sentiment on January 10th, the NSE Index has seen a significant rally that breakout the first and second resistance levels of 30,576.90 basis points and 30,911.20bps respectively. This was on a high momentum, closing above two psychological lines of 30,000 and 31,000bps in just one week to almost erase the losses recorded in the first six trading sessions of the year. The recovery in the past week followed optimism seen through the market technicals for the period which was positive and strong amidst flat volume traded as revealed by Investdata’s weekly Sentiment Report, showing a buy volume of 100% and sell position of 0%. The volume index of total transactions within the week was 1.00. Last week’s rally rekindled bullish sentiment back that resisted further decline as 2016 resistance level turned the new strong support level after testing 29,329.62 on January 9, well above the six-year lows attained late in January 2016. The global markets over the past had a mixed performance as positive signal from trade talks between China and U.S as some tariff in agricultural produce were lifted, with presidents of both countries planning to meet in February. The U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) fell by 30bps in the month of December 2018 to 1.9% y/y from 2.2% y/y in the previous month. This was the lowest since July 2017, and it is below the 2% target set by the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed). This is expected to reduce pressure in the emerging markets as Fed is likely to leave rate unchanged for first quarter of 2019. This will support rebound of stock markets and the economics of developing nations if this recovery in oil price is sustained and trade dispute resolved. Back to the market, it was a bullish outing for the NSE ASI from Monday to Friday, gaining 0.45%, 0.58%, 1.07%, 0.40% and 1.38% respectively, bringing the week’s gains to 3.94%, enough to wipe off previous week’s 2.64% loss. The positive sentiment for the seven sessions of bull transition was due to improved bargain hunting that formed a V shape. The energy behind the week’s performance was weak, despite the bullish run ahead of next month’s general elections, as reflected in the money flow index of 34.36bps, as against 28.41bps in previous week. Notwithstanding the fact that some funds entered the market, liquidity level remained low. Equity Indicators Last Week The benchmark NSEASI for the period garnered 1,174.47bps to close at 31,005.17bps, which was the week’s high, after opening at 29,830.70bps, after attaining a low of 29,689.73bps on below average traded volume as demand for stocks increased within the period, representing a 3.94% growth. Similarly, market capitalization rose by N437.97bn during the week, closing at N11.56tr, up from N11.12tr, representing 3.94% value gain. The NSEASI’s year-to-date negative returns position reduced drastically to 1.34%, just as market capitalization dropped by N158.26bn, or 1.34% below the year’s opening value of N11.72tr. Mixed Sectors Indices The sectorial indices for the period were largely bullish; except for the NSE banking index that closed shed 1.00%. The NSE Industrial goods led the sectors with 12.7%, after value gains by cement making giants- Dangote Cement, Lafarge Africa and Cement Company of Northern. The NSE Insurance notched 5.5%, helped by NEM insurance, which last week announced the emergence of AFIG Funds as new core investors (READ); Custodian Investment, Royal Exchange and Sovereign Trust Insurance in a week it announced plans for a N2.085bn rights issue (READ MORE). Market breadth during the week was positive, with advancers ’outnumbering decliners in the ratio of 100:77, to halt the previous week’s down market. Market activity were down in volume and value by 0.59% and 5.10% respectively to 1.26bn shares worth N13.35bn, slightly lower than previous week’s 1.27bn units valued at N14.07bn in the previous week. The best performing stocks for the period were NEM Insurance and Sovereign Trust Insurance that topped the advancers’ table with 43.4% and 30% gains respectively to close at N2.48 and N0.26 per on low price attraction and market forces. On the other hand, Resort Savings and Beta Glass lost 29.73% and 17.91% respectively, closing at N0.26 and N55.00 on market forces and profit taking. Market Outlook The bullish rally that created V shape pattern supports profit taking despite the positive sentiment and 100 buying pressure, which is a function of market forces in the new week as elections draw closer in the midst of rekindled buying interest on blue chip stocks, with strong earnings capacity that will support higher payout with companies like Infinity Microfinance Bank, Nestle, Nigerian Breweries, Africa Prudential and United Capital expected to be early filers. The prevailing cheap prices of stocks may trigger investor buying sentiments for short and long term gain... Sustained Down Market Offers Entry Opportunities For Bargain Hunting On NGSE Market Update for January 7 Monday’s session was another very tough and volatile one on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), leading to the fourth consecutive days of free fall in equity prices, as selloff was evident in almost all sectors, especially against the gathering clouds in the political environment and anxiety over Nigeria’s all-important Presidential election holding next month. The NSE’s benchmark All-Share index closed lower on a relative low volume, after inching up at the opening session, but dropped sharply by the mid-morning till afternoon, breaking down the last strong support level of 30,542.86 basis points. It made new 52-week lower lows after touching intraday low of 30,260.03bps from the highs of 30,709.65bps, thereby extending the corrective wave six, before retracing up in the last few minutes to close the first trading day of the week at 30,400.28bps. The market is likely to hit ANOTER new support level of 28,855.02bps before the elections proper. In the process, it would create more buying opportunities for discerning investors to take advantage of the prevailing situation and position for dividend and capital appreciation ahead of the forthcoming earnings reporting season. The NSE in the last four trading sessions has ignored the rebounding oil price at the international market as it closed Monday at $58.37 per barrel (still below the Federal Government’s $60pb benchmark used for the 2019 budget), besides other seemingly positive macro-economic indices recently released. Monday’s market technicals were negative and mixed as traded volume was lower than previous day’s in the midst of negative breadth and sentiment, as revealed by Investdata’s Daily Sentiment Report, showing a sell volume of 69% and 31% buy position. Volume index for the day’s total transactions was 0.66, while momentum behind the market’s performance was marginally down, as reflected in the 36.25bps money flow index, from previous day’s 36.93bps, despite the down market and low traded volume which indicates that funds are leaving some stocks for others. Index and Market Cap The NSE All Share Index at the end Monday’s session lost 238.62bps to close at 30,400.28bps, from 30,658.90bps, representing 0.78% decline, just as market capitalization shed N88.93bn, closing at N11.34tr, from the opening value of N11.43tr, representing a 0.78% value loss. The downturn was due to profit taking and selloffs in stocks like Nestle, Okomu Oil Zenith Bank, FBN Holding, Flour Mills, Dangote Sugar, FCMB, Access Bank and UACN, among others, which left Year-to-Date loss at 3.28%, while market capitalization decline increased to N384.18bn, from its opening level of N11.72tr, representing a 3.28% decline. Bearish Sectors Indices All sectoral indices on Monday were mostly bearish. Market breadth remained negative, with decliners outnumbering advancers in the ratio of 34:14, just as market activities were mixed with volume down by 33.42% to 222.58m shares from the previous day position 334.32m units. Value however rose 88.73% to N3.34bn from Friday’s N1.77bn, as transaction was driven by financial services stocks: Diamond Bank, Zenith Bank, FBNH, Guaranty Trust Bank and Access Bank. Diamond Bank and Wapic Insurance were the best performing stocks, as they topped the advancers table, chalking 10% apiece and closing at N1.98 and N0.44 each, on market forces. On the flipside, NEM Insurance and Resort Savings Loan Plc led the decliners’ table also with 10% each to close at N2.34 and N0.45 each, on market forces and trend. Market Outlook Technical tools remain negative with MACD, forming a double top on a daily time frame, while crossing down supports in the ongoing trendy and volatility amidst repositioning for 2018 full year earnings season to shape market performance ahead of December inflation data. There are also factors such as the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting holding this month, February’s Presidential election, earnings season beginning from February also and then the May 29 handover date. We advise cautious trading and investing in the days ahead. The ongoing volatility will persist as Q3 numbers assist investors and fund managers rebalance their portfolios, while watching the political space and ahead of full year company earnings position and post-election market dynamics. These are likely to drive prices north, or south, while determining market direction before or after the Presidential Election. Investors should review their positions in line with their investment goals, strength of the company numbers and act as events unfold in the global and domestic environment. However, we would like to reiterate our advice that investors should go for equities with intrinsic value, We advise investors to allow numbers guide their decisions while repositioning in any stock, especially now that stock prices remain low in the midst of mixed company numbers, weak economic and market fundamentals. Investors Eye Blue-chips, Strong Earnings Capacity, Better Payout Ahead Of 2018 Financials Market Update for the week ended January 4 and Outlook for January 7-11 Nigeria’s stock market had a bearish trend the past week, kicking off trading for the new year on a negative sentiment, as selling pressure persisted after the New Year holiday, reversing the positive performance of similar period in 2018. The decline was however on a lower transaction volume that reflected the dwindling investor confidence ahead of the general elections that commences next month with the battle for the Presidency. The thickening political atmosphere, though expected, has beclouded the seeming positive economic indices such as the Purchasing Managers Index that climbed to 61.1 points in December, from 57.9 points recorded in the preceding month; as well as the rebound in oil price on weak dollar and the proposed supply cut by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Add this to the marginal rise seen in Nigeria’s external reserve, which closed 2018 positive, even after sliding by about $4bn from its year peak level attained on May 10, 2018, according to data on the website of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) last week (READ). The free fall of equity prices in the first few days of 2019 is however beyond profit booking and can be linked to panic selling amidst fear over the coming elections, which have triggered the current low investor sentiment in the market. Investors have seemingly disregarded the potential opportunities in many stocks that continue to hit their 52-week low. The situation is worsened by the fact that the major political parties continue to focus their campaigns on personal attacks, amidst allegations of intention to rig the election, while saying little or nothing about how they will solve the real issues of economic deterioration. Chief among these are: the increasing unemployment/underemployment, low productivity/how to make the nation less import-dependent lingering poverty, low human capital development drive (Education), infrastructural gap, the comatose healthcare challenges and insecurity. The weak economic fundamentals arising from the cut in 2019 budget, high debt servicing cost of over N2.21tr and the reality surrounding the oil price benchmark of $60, exchange rate at N309, estimated oil production of 2.2million bpd with OPEC proposing a supply cut to 1.63million from Nigerian and how to make inflation rate single digit. Back to the market, it was positive start for the week with the index recording a gain of 1.27% on Monday after which it nosedive till the last trading day of the week on a strong selloff in highly capitalized and blue chip stocks to close on a negative note of 1.28% decline to halt thetwo previous week of bull run. The high selling pressure in the week under review was driven by profit taking, proximity of 2019 elections and anticipated weak economic activities going into the New Year as selloffs continued as market players reposition their portfolios for post-election rally and 2018 full year earnings season. Market technicals, for the period was negative and weak as volume traded was low as revealed by Investdata’s weekly Sentiment Report, showing a sell position of 93% and buy volume of7%. The volume index of total transactions within the week was 1.29. The energy behind the week’s performance was weak to show the selling sentiment and increase number of stocks that decline as reflected on the money flow index at 29.47bps, from 36.00bps in previous week, an indication that funds left some stocks in the midst of low-volume of transaction and low liquidity. Equity Indicators Last Week The NSE All Share Index for the period lost 398.82 basis points to close at 30,638.90 basis points, after opening at 31,037.72bps, hitting a high of 31,434.4bps, from low of 30,577.18bps on low volume resulting from cautious trading, represented 1.28% decline. Similarly, market capitalization was down by N88.4bn, closing at N11.38tr, from N11.57tr, representing 0.78% value loss which was saved by the supplementary listing of CCNN, following the conclusion of its merger with sister- Kalambaina Cement, which consequently ranked the 12th most capitalized stock on the exchange. NSE INDEX WEEKLY TIME FRAME The NSE ASI is at the point of reversal or breakdown of the yellow line which is the last strong support level at 30,576.90 basis points that was retested, and any breakdown of this level depending on market forces will lead to 28,882.42bps that is below 29,000 psychological line and bring the market position to August 2016. At the end of the week, low cap stocks dominated the advancers’ table for the period as profit booking and selloff hits low, medium and high capital stocks that appreciated in value due to Santa Claus and year-end rally. Meanwhile, the NSEASI’s year-to-date negative returns stood at 2.52%, just as market capitalization dropped to N88.4bn, or 0.78% below the year’s opening value. Bearish Sectors Indices The sectorial performance for the period was largely bearish, except for the NSE Oil/Gas index that closed higher. Market breadth was negative, with decliners ’outnumbering advancers in the ratio of 45:22, to short-lived the previous weeks of bull market. Market activity in terms of volume and value were down by 47.36% and 41.36%% respectively to 1.65bn shares worth N8.41bn, compared to previous week’s 3.13bn units valued at N14.35bn, boosted by trading in financial service, healthcare and services sectors. The best performing stock for the week were Custodian Investment Plc and Julius Berger that topped the advancers’ table with 16.19% and 15.69% gains respectively to close at N6.10 and N23.25 per on low price attraction and expectation of better full year earnings report. On the other hand, FCMB and GSK lost 16.49% and 15.86% respectively, closing at N1.62 and N12.20 on market forces and profit taking. Market Outlook We expect the overall market sentiment to remain mixed with rekindled buying interest on blue chip stocks that had suffered huge losses before now, with strong earnings capacity that will support higher payout with the banks already releasing the closed period and fixing dates for board meeting to approve 2018 financial year results. The prevailing cheap prices of stocks may trigger investor buying sentiments for short and long term gain. However, we expect speculative trading on some stocks with strong potential upside to shape the breadth of market performance this week, while watching the political space, since economic activities in Q4 have given insights into what the expected full year GDP and corporate earnings will be. With the political campaign ongoing, Nigerians are expecting new strategies and roadmap to address the economy, especially the rising poverty level, human capital development, decayed infrastructure and education with timeframes for delivery. These campaigns are likely to drive prices north, or south, while determining market direction before or after the Presidential election. Investors should review their positions in line with their investment goals, strength of the company numbers and act as events unfold in the global and domestic environment. However, we would like to reiterate that investors should go for equities with intrinsic value. We advise investors to allow numbers guide their decisions while repositioning in any stock, especially now that stock prices remain volatile amidst mixed company, economic and market fundamentals RE: INVEST 2019 The difference between you and others who are not aware of what I am sharing with you is ACTION. 2018 Recap, 2019 Outlook: Taking Advantage Of Low Prices, Opportunities, Uncertainties It was a rough year for Nigeria’s Stock market in 2018 as many investors were left to leak their wounds, cutting short the unprecedented performance of the benchmark All-Share index in 2017, which continued until January 17, 2018. The decline arose from multiple headwinds ranging from continued rate hike in developed economics that trigged capital outflow from emerging markets like Nigeria, owing to mixed macroeconomic indices from the dwindling economic activities. We cannot however rule out the risk associated with the 2019 general elections as Nigeria’s political environment which is weighing on stock prices, many of which hit 52-week low despite the resistance in December, the third green month in the year under review. The last month of 2018 was impacted by the historic seasonal Santa Claus and year-end rally which had closed positively for the first time in the decade between 2009 and 2018. We expect that most of those headwinds would not linger in 2019. Instead, they will be replaced by a few tailwinds that will be discussed in the New Year outlook. However, it’s obvious that during the pre-election year lack of concrete economic policies to give direction and coordination of economic recovery growth plan of the government was also a major factor that affected domestic and international investors confidence as economic activities declined in the first two quarter of 2018, when the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) could not meet in Q1 due to the lack of requisite quorum. Recall that the National Assembly did not confirm the President’s nominees, following the after some members had served out their term. Add this to the fact that the CBN retained its benchmark Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) at 14% all through the year, a situation that was made worse by the delayed passage of the 2018 budget and its implementation. The composite NSE ASI in 2018 shed all of 6,812.69 basis points to close at 31,430.50bps from its 38,243.19bps opening figure, representing a 17.81% decline, after hitting a high of 45,321.82bps and low of 30,506.79bps within the year. Trading for the year 2018 started on a positive note in January, which was characterized by strong buying pressure and positive sentiments that overflowed from 2017, when share prices (especially blue chips), volume and value recorded new highs, as virtually all the indices rallied. There was however a reversal of this trend in the following month with a pullback that lasted for all of 10 months, touching a low of 30,506.79bps in December, before retracing up to experience mixed performance to extend the periods of bear market (most notably from February to November). These trying conditions made the early second half of the year quite uninteresting for many traders, especially with the end of the year rally to halt the bearish trend and close the month of December green. The Santa Clause rally effect was visible in the exchange in the final trading sessions of the year. NSE MONTHLY INDEX MOVEMENT FOR 2018 The bearish ascendance and falling equity prices were in line as the NSE ranked among the worst five performing exchanges in the world, as players record huge losses during the year. The change in market sentiments offered insights into the 2018 decline, which supported the mild and mixed quarterly earnings reports and weak macroeconomic indices. It therefore discouraged more investors and traders from the market as reflected in the yearly Investdata sentiment report showing sell volume of 94% and 6% buy position, as against the 2017 buy sentiment of 91% and sell volume of 9%. The market’s downtrend lasted for nine months after the first month of the year and had an upside and decline in February till May before closing up in June. The other leg of the market which is the primary market had low activity, compared with the previous years as Rights Issues, Initial Public Offerings were few due to uncertainties and low investor confidence in the market. The market’s sectoral indices performance were bearish, with all 11 indexes closing the year in red, led by the manufacturing indexes like the NSE Industrial and Consumers Goods declining by 37.40% and 23.28% respectively to topped the chart. Following the NSE Industrial and Consumer Goods indexes reflected the dwindling economic activities, weak purchasing power and low consumer confidence, just when the labour market remained weak with unemployment rate at 60% and poor wages resulting from high inflation rate. Corporate earnings from these sectors were below market expectation within the period under consideration. Others followed as revealed by the chart above. Available data shows that market liquidity was low due to continued exit of foreign and institutional players. This also revealed how very dependent Nigeria’s stock market and economy has remained on foreign funds which tends to dictate economic prosperity and wealth creation by their movement in and out of the market at any time. Knowing the danger of foreign investor dominance in any stock market, local investors and traders should plan their trades for 2019 in case they return before or after the elections in the New Year. 2018 Return Performance Listed below are the best performance stocks in terms of price appreciation despite the downtrend experienced in the 2018. A total of 25 stocks closed green, with 16 of them growing their share prices by over 20%, compared to 65 equities that advanced in value, 12 of which recorded triple-digit price appreciation in 2017. Also, nine stocks recorded between 1.30% and 15.76% capital growth for the same period. The top five best performing stocks were: Cement Company of Northern Nigeria’s 104.21%; Unity Bank had 101.89%; while Sterling Bank, NEM Insurance and Learn Africa recorded capital growth of 75.93%, 62.65% and 54.55% respectively. A further breakdown showed that the Industrial Goods and banking stocks dominated the best performance table for the year 2018, a situation that may likely continue in the New Year with other stocks that had suffered losses within the period, rebounding on low attraction ahead of the 2018 full year earnings season in Q1 2019 and outcome of the February Presidential elections, despite weak economic fundamentals. On the flip side, more than 69 stocks were on the year’s worst performing table, dominated by Insurance stocks as the new pricing rule of the exchange was implemented and also unimpressive numbers from these companies further depressed their share price to become kobo stocks. Others were due to mixed earnings, negative sentiments and general bearish trend in the market as a result of earlier factors mentioned above. The top five worst performing stocks for the year were: Lafarge Africa, which lost 72.27% of its opening price for the year; AG Leventis, 61.43%; while Universal Insurance, Sumu Assurance and FTN Cocoa were down by 60% each. See the table below. What to expect in the New Year The pre-election year left most equities on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) grossly undervalued owing to the free fall prices strength of negative sentiment, weak economic fundamentals and mixed scorecards from listed companies, even as data by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed that Nigeria’s economy had decline in two consecutive quarters before the recent Q3 GDP data revealed growth. The Q4 data may likely look up due to the festive season and end of year activities, amidst the electoral season spending. We expect that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in the New Year would review its monetary policy stance as part of stabilizing price, while checking inflation even at the detriment of economic activities and export drive. The return of foreign portfolio investors this year depends on the outcome of election and whether the present government is returned, or a new one successful installed come May 29, 2019. Nigeria’s external reserves is already threatened by the production cut put in place by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in December, amidst the decline in oil prices at about $52 per barrel, which is way below the Federal Government’s 2019 budget benchmark of $60pb. The is also the issue of a cut in the government’s spending plan, which has given insight into what will happen, as government revenue may suffer setback, besides the worrisome implementation style of the yearly budget which has not helped matter before now. The sad thing is that under the present government, the situation would likely persist unfortunately at a time the nation is in dare need of more jobs for its army of unemployed and underemployed populace. In the New Year, investors should keep their gaze on blue chip stocks in the banking, services, conglomerates, industrial goods, energy and consumer goods sectors, most of which suffered huge losses, despite recording earnings uptrend in the previous financial year-end and are still having strong earnings power enough to further drive their prices in 2019. The bearish trend may likely continue this year, but the 2018 full year earnings reporting season would drive valuation and prices within a short period and calls for proper timing to know to when to take position and when to exit, in order to protect capital. The global economic outlook for 2019 remains unpredictable as factors militating the economy are many, ranging from politics, falling commodities prices, trade war tension, Brexit and others likely to shape the world as policy changes continue across U.S, Europe and the Middle East. Investors should plan their trading and investing in the New Year by sticking to instructions and rules while taking advantage of low prices and navigating between opportunities and uncertainties in 2019. Volatility May Persist As Q3 Data Assist Investors, Fund Managers Rebalance Portfolios Market Update for January 3rd, 2019 Nigeria’s stock market had another volatile session on Thursday, extending its second day bearish outing in the New Year on a strong selling pressure driven by short-term profit booking by traders, despite the seeming improvement in economic data from the CBN and the news of 5% rebound in oil price at the international market, ahead of this month’s supply cut decision by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). The benchmark Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) All-Share index opened with a sight gap down early Thursday and retraced up by the mid-morning, before making a sharp pull back during the session. It moved between an intraday high of 31,078.43 basis points to a low of 30,749.66bps, before closing marginally up at 0,771.32bps on a low volume indicates the wait-and-see attitude of many investors to identify reversal before jumping into any position. In the process, the index is forming a triple bottom that supports an uptrend. The candlestick formation at the end of trading signal that reversal is imminent depending on market forces. Investdata Research believes that January effect which was absent in early 2018 will resurface this time due to low liquidity in the market ahead of the 2019 general elections which will influence the market negatively. Positive economic or political news or information are therefore needed to reverse the trend before the presidential election and 2018 full year earnings season. Discerning investors and members of Investdata signal group should use this opportunity to shop for companies that will grow their dividend payout which will drive price during the earnings season and avoid the companies that are likely to cut dividend. Market technicals for the day were negative and weak as traded volume was lower than previous day’s in the midst of negative breadth and negative sentiment, as revealed by Investdata’s Daily Sentiment Report, showing a sell volume of 93% and 7% buy position. Volume index for the day’s total transactions was 0.50, while energy behind the market’s performance was marginally up, as reflected in the 36.93bps money flow index, from previous day’s 36.66bps, despite the down market and low traded volume which indicates that funds are leaving some stocks for others. Index and Market Cap At the end of Thursday trading, the composite NSEASI lost 298.74 points to close at 30,771.32bps, from 31,070.06bps, representing 0.96% decline, just as market capitalization shed N111.41bn, closing at N11.47tr, from the opening value of N11.57tr, representing a 0.96% depreciation in value for the session. To become a member, send ‘YES’ or ‘STOCKS’ to the phone numbers below. The number of stocks on our watchlist has increased due to the prolonged market correction. Take advantage of this service to buy right and sell right. Thursday’s downturn was due to profit taking in Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank, Stanbic IBTC, FBNH, Flourmills, Dangote Sugar, Diamond Bank, FCMB, Access Bank and GSK, among others. This left the Year-to-Date loss at 2.10%, while that of market capitalization is down by N245.82bn from its opening level of N11.72tr, representing a 2.10% decline. Bearish Sectors Indices Sectoral performance indices for the session were largely bearish, except for the NSE Oil/Gas that closed green at 0.64%. Market breadth remained negative, with decliners outweighing advancers in the ratio of 24:13, just as market activities were down in volume and value by 21.09% and 27.79% respectively to 169.19m shares worth N1.13bn, from previous session’s 214.4m units valued at N1.56bn, driven by, Diamond Bank, Transcorp, Access Bank, FCMB and Zenith Bank. The best performing stocks were Forte Oil and Union Bank that topped the advancers table, gaining 9.64% and 8.04% respectively, closing at N30.70 and N6.05 each, on the news that Planet Oil Limited is acquiring Femi Otedola’s 75% equity stake and market forces. On the flipside, GSK and Universality Press led the decliners’ side with 10%% and 9.63% respectively to close at N13.05 and N1.97 each, on market forces and trend. Market Outlook Being the last trading session of the week, the MACD on a daily time frame has formed a double top, while looking down supports in the ongoing trend and volatility amidst repositioning for 2018 full year earnings season to shape market performance ahead of December inflation data, MPC meeting, presidential election, earnings season and handover. We advise cautious trading and investing ahead of the polls. How To Plan and Reduce Your Risk in 2019? "By failing to plan then you are planning to fail". Yesterday, I was checking my outstanding goals for this year and I realized that I still have a lot to accomplish. Sincerely speaking, I didn't achieve much this last year and some of my colleagues that I asked also didn't achieve their goals too year. How many times have you said to yourself, if only this had happened, or, if only I had done this or that, things would be different? The fact remains the same ... If you keep doing what you've been doing—you will get what you've always gotten which is why using last year's investment knowledge to make decision and expecting a different result is a DAYLIGHT DREAM Research has shown that most people spend their whole lives abandoning their dreams and pay attention to Social media, TV, Sport bet, Ponzi Schemes or stuck on a point without making progress toward their goals. Did you know that only 3% of the world has set goals for themselves? Here is the 80/20 rule of planning. This rule says that the first 20% of time that you spend planning your work before you begin will save you as much as 80% of the time in getting the job done once you get started. This implies that if you can apply the 80/20 rule to your new year's revolution and create time before 15th of January to plan 2019 ahead if you have not, you'll definitely be productive and have great year in 2019. Happy Trading, Ambrose Omordion P.S. I understand that you are very busy, however, kindly find time to follow up on your 2019 investment goals and don't forget that acquiring knowledge in Stock market is also of top priority so that you can make good investment decision this year... Profit Taking, Volatility Ahead, Amidst Bargain Hunting, Year-end Portfolio Repositioning Market Update for December 24 Nigeria stock market had a big reversal at Monday’s session, with the benchmark All-Share index regaining all it had lost in the previous 23 days on a huge volume traded and strong market breadth that seemed to announce the arrival of long awaited Santa Claus rally. This seasonal movement at the end of the year has become a pattern that historically helps the month of December to end on a positive note over the past four consecutive years. Such knee-jerk movement, according to Investdata Research has come, particularly as we saw on Monday, December 24, 2018, come on the strength of increased activities of institutional investors, among others, taking advantage of persisting low prices to reposition their portfolios, while targeting blue chip stocks ahead of the 2018 full year earnings reporting season in Q1 2019. The composite NSEASI opened with a gap up early in the morning, making new highs during the entire session, climbing from 30,773.64 basis points and then rallying sharply to hit 31,967.01bps. In the process, the index recovered a significant 1,193.37bps, with the NSE at wave 5 indicating a short Bull Run in a bearish market. All five sectorial indexes closed in the green, something that has become a rarity. Investdata Research believes the strong bullish session witnessed on Monday is a signal of what investors and traders should expect after the 2019 elections, if the economy is fit. This is because no stock market exists in isolation, given that strong economic fundamentals drive company performances that in turn support equity prices during any market conduction. What happened during the last Q3 earnings season is likely to repeat itself during the next earnings season as stock prices remain low with expected high dividend yield for companies likely to grow their dividend payout. Monday’s market technicals were positive and strong, especially given that traded volume was huge and higher than previous day’s in the midst of positive breadth. There was also strong buying pressure as revealed by Investdata’s Daily Sentiment Report, showing a buy volume of 100%. Volume index for the day’s total transactions was 2.61, while the force behind the market’s performance was up, as reflected in the money flow index at 49.44bps, which rose from previous day’s 41.72bps, indicating that funds entered the market and some stocks. Index and Market Cap The All Share Index’s rise was the highest daily gain in all of 44 months (three years and eight months) to close above the 31,000 psychological line at 31,967.01bps, from 30,773.64bps. This represented 3.88% growth, just as market capitalization climbed by N435.9bn to N11.68tr, after opening at N11.24tr, representing a 3.88% value gain. Attention: Join Investdata buy and sell signal setup to get all our in-depths analysis on the picture and to get access to our carefully created watch list. To become a member, send ‘YES’ or ‘STOCKS’ to the phone numbers below. The number of stocks on our watchlist has increased due to the prolonged market correction. Take advantage of this service to buy right and sell right. The upturn was impacted by value appreciation in medium and high cap stocks like: Nestle, Seplat Petroleum, Dangote Cement, Zenith Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, Diamond Bank, Stanbic IBTC, Access and Dangote Sugar among others. This reduced Year-to-Date loss to 16.41%, and that of market capitalization to N2.26tr from its opening level in January, representing 14.32% decline during the period. Bullish Sectors Indices All the sectoral indices were bullish as the market turned around, while breadth remained positive with advancers outnumbering decliners in the ratio of 36:5, just as activities were up in volume and value by 269.45% and 41.69% respectively. Investors traded 715.04m shares worth N5.19bn, compared to previous session’s 193.53m units valued at N3.67bn, driven by: NEM Insurance, MedView Airline, Guaranty Trust Bank Transcorp. Stanbic IBTC and Diamond Bank were the best performing stocks as they topped the advancers table, gaining 10% each to close at N50.60 and N1.65 each, apparently on the back of market forces and merger deal of the latter with Access Bank. For both stock, we cannot also rule out the effect of the agreement between the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and MTN Communications Limited, which reached amicable settlement over the $8.13bn improper repatriation of dividend (READ MORE). The day’s decliners side was led by Guinea Insurance and Tantalizer, following their 8.0%% and 6.67% slide, closing at N0.23 and N0.20 each, on market forces. Market Outlook Expect profit taking and sustained volatility amidst bargain hunting and portfolio repositioning for year-end to shape performance of the market in the last three days of 2018. MACD on weekly and daily time frame have crossed over on high volume, which supports uptrend, depending on market forces after the Christmas holiday, even as the market is still resisting further decline. This is especially as the number of companies hitting new 52-week low has dropped. However, we would like to reiterate our advice that investors should go for equities with intrinsic value, We advise investors to allow numbers guide their decisions while repositioning in any stock, especially now that stock prices remain low in the midst of weak company, economic and market fundamentals. Profit Taking, Volatility May Persist Amidst Year-end Portfolio Realignment, Bargain Hunting Market Update for December 27 It was yet another volatile session on the Nigerian Stock Exchange on Thursday, laced with profit booking, as the benchmark indexes closed lower on mixed sentiments ahead of year-end window dressing by fund managers and others. This oscillating trend is likely to continue, going into the New Year, as economic fundamentals become weaker, just as oil price trades below the Federal Government’s 2018 and 2019 budget benchmark. The Federal Government has retained its 2018 oil benchmark price of $60 per barrel for 2019, a level considered over ambitious, at a time Iran, with four times of Nigeria’s reserves and almost twice of its capacity has set a benchmark of $54pb. Also not helping matters is that with less than 50 days to the Presidential Election scheduled for February 16, 2019, the blame game over the sorry state of the nation and indeed the economy has become even more intense. Unbridled attack on personality has remained the campaign strategy of the major political parties at the detriment of the expected robust discussions on how to fix Nigeria’s shaky economy. Noteworthy is that the Federal Government’s Economic Recovery & Growth Plan (ERGP) has done little or nothing to reposition the economy for growth, judging by the rising public debt profile, among others. Trading opened on the NSE index after the Christmas holiday on a gap down as short-term players cashed out after jump on Monday, December 24, 2018, from the morning session till afternoon. It however retraced up marginally at few minutes to close, even as the positive divergence remained strong, despite the intraday pullback from the highs of 31,967.01 basis points to low of 31,569.28bps before finally closing at 31,692.63bps on a positive market breadth. As events continue unfolding ahead of 2019, one major factor that will determine the direction of the market, besides the election tide remains the 2018 full-year earnings reporting season between February and March in expectation of smart money pushing equity prices up, as yield curve in developed markets are looking down despite the hike in interest rates. The fact that funds leaving these advance markets to emerging markets will be a plus for our market. Unfortunately however, at a time like this, the economic front and political environment are blinking, due to the lack of clear economic policies and selfish politicking. Market technicals for Thursday were strong but mixed as traded volume was high but less than previous day’s in the midst of positive breadth and strong selling pressure as revealed by Investdata’s Daily Sentiment Report, showing a sell position of 69% and 31% buy volume. Volume index for the day’s total transactions was 1.59, while the momentum behind the market’s performance was up, as reflected in the money flow index at 52.57bps, which rose from previous day’s 49.44bps, indicating that funds entered the market and some stocks, despite the profit taking. Index and Market Cap The NSE’s composite Index 274.38 points to close at 31,692.63bps, after opening at 31,967.01bps which represents 0.86% decline, just as market capitalization dropped by N100.22bn to N11.58tr, from an opening value of N11.68tr, representing a 0.86% value loss. Thursday’s downturn was due to profit taking in stocks like: Dangote Cement, Flour Mills, FBNH, UACN, Access Bank, Wema Bank, Dangote Sugar and Dangote Flour, among others, which raised Year-to-Date loss to 17.13%. Market capitalization decline YTD stood at N2.27tr, from its opening level in January, representing 15.18% decline during the period. Mixed Sectors Indices The sectoral performance indices were largely bullish, except for the NSE Insurance and Industrial goods indexes that were in red, while market breadth remained positive with advancers outweighing decliners in the ratio of 30:16. Market activities were down in volume and value by 36.75% and 49.78% respectively as 452.26m shares worth N2.61bn changed hands, compared to the previous session’s 715.04m units valued at N5.19bn. Transactions volume for the day were driven by MedView Airline, NEM Insurance, Transcorp, Fidelity Bank and Access Bank. The best performing stocks for the session were Conoil and Mutual Benefits which gained 10% each, closing at N23.10 and N0.22 each, apparently on the back of market forces and low price attraction. The day’s decliners side was led by UACN and NEM Insurance, following their 10%% and 9.15% slide, closing at N10.80 and N2.68 each, on profit booking. Market Outlook Expect this trend of profit taking and sustained volatility amidst bargain hunting and portfolio repositioningfor year-end to shape performance of the market in the last two days of 2018. MACD on weekly and daily time frame have crossed over on high volume, which supports uptrend, depending on market forces as the year winds down, even as the market is still resisting further decline. However, we would like to reiterate our advice that investors should go for equities with intrinsic value, We advise investors to allow numbers guide their decisions while repositioning in any stock, especially now that stock prices remain low in the midst of weak company, economic and market fundamentals.
