Cautious Trading Ahead Of Next Week’s MPC Meeting, Amidst Earnings Inflows Equity Market Update for March 18 Thursday’s trading turned positive on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), as bargain hunting for banking and cement stocks pushed the key performance All-Share index higher on a very high traded volume and wide positive breadth that signaled strength, after a long downtrend and sideways movement. This reversal in trading pattern was led by banking stocks as first-tier players resisted further decline due to the changing trading environment, as well as happenings in the economy ahead next week’s crucial meeting of the Central Bank of Nigeria Monetary Policy Committee. The uptrend that started on Tuesday, however, needs to be confirmed after the MPC meeting outcome, that informs our belief that players would likely trade cautiously today, being the last trading session for the week, as well as on Monday and most part of Tuesday, when the first hint of the MPC outcome is disclosed. As mentioned earlier in previous updates, the market breaking down its 40,000 and 39,000 psychological lines is a sign of volatility, prior to breaking out the shortest seven-day moving average and ahead of the 14 and 20-DMA on the daily chart. There may be strong inflow into the market, given that the market has been quite since UBA Plc announced its dividend cut, which came as a surprise to investors because it was despite the bank’s positive numbers. Thursday’s release of Guaranty Trust Bank’s audited full-year report for 2020, with a final dividend of N2.70 proposed, as well as Zenith Bank’s attractive support price impacted the market and the stocks positively during the session. The rising bond yields and TB rates are not enough to scare investing public away from the market, an understanding of portfolio realignments and stock market dynamics will, however, help fund managers and others to play wisely in this changing environment. Meanwhile, Thursday’s trading started on the upside and was sustained through the session, despite oscillating on buying interests in banking and other medium capstocks, as well as profit taking in insurance stocks. These pushed the benchmark index to an intraday high of 38,930.82 basis points from its low of 38,706.13bps, before closing above its opening point at 38,914.84bps. Market technicals were positive and strong, with volume traded higher than previous day’s in the midst of breadth favoring the bulls on ahigh buying pressure as revealed by Investdata’s Sentiments Report showing 93% ‘buy’ volume and 7% ‘sell’ position. Total transaction volume index stood at 3.57 points, just as energy behind the day’s performance remained weak, with Money Flow Index looking up sharply at 44.26pts, from the previous day’s 22.46pts, indicating that funds entered the market on renewed buying interest. The buying interest was demonstrated in the huge patronage of Unity Bank Plc as shown in the trading of its 1.0bn ordinary shares representing 8.56% of its total shares outstanding for N700.691m; followed the 200.187m units of Multiverse for N40.037m, while GTBank’s 122.177m shares changed hands for N3.552bn. Index and Market Caps The All Share index NSEASI, at the end Thursday transaction gained 208.71bps, closing at 38,914.84bps after opening at 38,706.13bps, representing a 0.54% growth. Similarly, market capitalization rose by N109.2bn, closing at N20.36tr, from previous day’s N20.25tr, which also represented 0.54% appreciation in value. Attention: If you have not signed up for Investdata buy and sell signal setup, don’t delay. We have just reduced to 8 STOCKS TO WATCH THAT ARE BUILDING NEW BULLISH BASE in our watchlist. These stocks are with double potentials to rally considering their current and oscillating mood of the market value. To become a member, send ‘YES’ or ‘STOCKS’ to the phone numbers below. Take advantage of this service to buy right and sell right at the current oscillating market in the midst of earnings season, portfolio reshuffling and repositioning as we await an economic reform policy to stimulate and re-track the economy again. The session upturn was impacted by the demand for stocks like Zenith Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, Lafarge Africa, Dangote Sugar, United Capital, UBA, Access Bank, and FBNH, among others. This impacted positively on Year-To-Date loss, reducing it to 3.37%, just as market capitalization loss dropped to N722.99bn, or 3.10% below its opening value for the year. Mixed Sector Indices Performance indexes across sectors were mixed, as NSE Banking and Industrial goods index closed 4.40% and 0.16% respectively higher, while the NSE Insurance index led the decliners, losing 0.78%, followed by Consumer goods and Energy with 0.24% and 0.13% respectively lower. Market breadth turned positive, as advancers outpaced decliners in the ratio of 22:11; just as activities in volume and value terms rose as investors exchanged 1.47bn shares worth N5.85bn. Eterna and Lasaco were the best performing stocks, gaining 9.96% and 8.33% respectively, after closing at N5.08and N1.30 per share respectively on market forces. On the flip side, Linkage Assurance andCoronation Insurance lost 9.09% each, closing at N0.50 and N0.50 per share, on market forces and profit taking. Market Outlook We expect the mixed trend to continue as more corporate earnings hit the market in the face of rising fixed income market yields, oil prices oscillating and high dividend yields during this earnings season. Also, the pullbacks offer bargain hunters and income investors another opportunity to reposition, while more companies release their full-year numbers to support recovery. This is based on the fact that the rising fixed income yields may not be enough to scare all investors away from the equity market. Again, the way to go is: Target dividend-paying stocks and fundamentally sound companies with growth prospects in 2021, looking the way of mispriced equities. This is especially given the rising oil prices that have so far supported the economy and equity market, despite the seeming improvement in the fixed income yield which had remained at negative real rate of return due to the subsisting high inflation. However, the strong and faster recovery may continue, depending on market forces, going forward, as propelled by expected 2020 full earnings reports, until the next MPC meeting in March. The NSE’s index action and indicators are in divergence on a low traded volume and positive buying sentiments. Mixed Trend May Linger, Amidst Corporate Earnings Expectations, Rising Yields Market Update for March 16 It was yet another mixed and volatile session on the Nigerian Stock Exchange on Tuesday, as the benchmark All-Share index, closing higher and halting three successive days of decline after a long downtrend. This, however, is yet to signal anything, even as the index was pushed up by combined effects of the 3.55% and 1.20% price appreciation in Dangote Cement and MTN Nigeria respectively, as investors continue to cut their exposure in banking stocks. This may have been influenced by the unexpected dividend cut witnessed in UBA. Observe that since the release of that result, and despite the fact that UBA’s share price has resisted further decline, other banking stocks yet to announce their 2020 full-year results are recording price drops. This has nonetheless made the sector more attractive for new entrants. Nigeria’s rising inflation rate remains a risk to the economy and investing public, amidst concerns among investors about the geometric rise, since August 2019, towards the all-time high last seen in the 90s. February consumer price index hit 17.33%, from 16.47% in January thereby worsening the negative real rate of return in the fixed income space, despite the rising yields. This higher-than-expected inflation rate, driven by the obvious misalignments in government policies, in addition to the unchecked rise in insecurity, high electricity tariff, and the pump price of fuel, continue to wreck the biggest damage to the economy and market. The worsening negativity in the real rate of return in the markets could trigger sales off in the face of rising yields and earnings season, a situation that could change the views and expectations of economic recovery in 2021 among fund managers. Worsening the already bad situation is the nation’s unemployment rate of 33.3%, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. There was however some reprieve in the form of the seeming recovery in productivity as indicated by the February Purchasing manager index at 52.7 points, up from 50.7 points in January. This early expansion and exit from recession are already threatened if members of the Monetary Policy Committee vote to raise rates owing to pressure from the galloping inflation. Nonetheless, bigger capital gains and yields are required to outrun inflation in the short term, following which the equity market remains the right investment vehicle today, despite the rising yields in the fixed income market. This is especially true during this earnings season’s peak with offer of dividend payment and reward to investors, with Zenith Bank, for example, having a dividend yield of 11.25% within less than four weeks of announcing its 2020 full-year numbers. The market is currently trading below the 39,000 basis points support level,a sign of volatility towards the next one that has been sported around 38,464.00bps. Should the index break this point, the next visible support is far below at 34,396.3bps, unless there is positive news or favourable policies capable of knee-jerking the market, while boosting market liquidity and sentiments. Tuesday’strading opened slightly on the upside and oscillated on buying interests in high, medium and dividend-paying stocks, and selloffs in banking stocks, pushing the NSE’s index to an intraday high of 38,846.27 basis points from its lows of 38,531.86bps. Market technicals were positive and weak, with volume traded higher than previous day’s in the midst of negative breadth and mixed sentiment as revealed by Investdata’s Sentiments Report showing 60% ‘buy’ volume and 40% ‘sell’ position. Total transaction volume index stood at 0.56 points, just as momentum behind the day’s performance remained weak, with Money Flow Index looking down at 21.73pts, from the previous day’s 25.71pts, indicating that funds left the market, despite the day’s gain. Index and Market Caps At the close of Tuesday’s trading, the All-Share index gained 158.97bps, closing at 38,561.84bps after opening at 38,561.84bps, representing a 0.41% rise. Similarly, market capitalization rose by N83.18bn, closing at N20.26tr, from the previous day’s N20.18tr, which also represented 0.41% appreciation in value. Attention: If you have not signed up for Investdata buy and sell signal setup, don’t delay. We have just reduced to 8 STOCKS TO WATCH THAT ARE BUILDING NEW BULLISH BASE in our watchlist. Take advantage of this service to buy right and sell right at the current oscillating market in the midst of earnings season, portfolio reshuffling, and repositioning as we await an economic reform policy to stimulate and re-track the economy again. The day’s upturn was driven by demand for stocks like Dangote Cement, MTNN, Guinness Nigeria, GSK, and Vitafoam, among others. This impacted positively on Year-To-Date loss, reducing it to 3.85%, just as market capitalization loss ballooned to N1.15tr, or 3.60% below its opening value for the year. Mixed Sector Indices Performance indexes across sectors were mixed, as the NSE Industrial and Consumer goods indexes closed 1.70% and 0.23% higher respectively, while the NSE Banking index led the decliners, after shedding 3.51%. it was followed by Insurance with 1.07%. Market breadth was negative, as decliners outnumbered advancers in the ratio of 20:11; just as activities in volume and value terms improved, as players exchanged 220.86m shares worth N4.21bn. The day’s volume was driven by transactions in UBA, Access Bank, Mutual Benefits Assurance, AXA Mansard Insurance, and Guaranty Trust Bank. Guinness Nigeria and Regency Insurance were the best-performing stocks, after gaining 10% each, closing at N25.30 and N0.33 per share respectively on market forces and earnings expectations. On the flip side, Coronation Insurance and Africa Prudential lost 9.09% and 8.26% respectively, closing at N0.50 and N5.00 per share, on profit-taking and selloff. Market Outlook We expect the mixed trend to continue as more corporate earnings hit the market in the face of rising fixed income market yields, oil prices and high dividend yields during this earnings season. Why Use Plastic Pipe for Water Lines? While steel, cast iron, and copper are all good pipe materials that are still in use, plastic offers many advantages that they lack. One of the biggest is that plastic is easy to cut and form into any shape or size needed, even on job sites, which reduces the amount of labor required to install them. Other benefits of plastic pipe for water lines include: 1. Non-Reactive: A common issue with metal piping is that, when two dissimilar types are connected, they can react with one another and corrode. This isn't an issue with plastic pipes for plumbing, which are resistant to chemical corrosion. 2. Corrosion Resistant: Many metals begin to rust after extensive contact with water and other fluids. Plastic will not, and it can even be specially formulated to meet the demands of the system they'll be an important part of. 3. Low Heat Conductivity: Many types of plastic piping can handle a wide range of temperatures without warping or cracking. At the same time, their low conductivity helps maintain the temperature of the water inside without creating condensation like copper pipes are prone to do (if not insulated). 4. Color-Coded & Marked: Plastic pipes for plumbing will almost always be distinguished by color and have marks on the outside to denote diameter, pressure rating, and type of plastic. In some cases, plastic pipes will also have a laboratory seal to signal that they can be used for potable water. This makes it easy to identify the type and purpose of the pipe so you can replace it, if necessary. https://www.acplasticsinc.com/.../types-of-plastic-pipes...

NGSE Index Slides Again On Liquidity Concerns, Portfolio Realignments Market Update for March 15 The nation’s stock market maintained its downtrend on Monday, opening the week on a negative note, as the composite All-Share index closed lower, extending to three consecutive sessions of decline on a low traded volume and almost flat breadth. The index was dragged down by selloffs in consumer goods and banking stocks, while investors make sector rotation out of some assets, with players hunting for sectors and stocks capable of outperforming the NSE’s benchmark index, even if it means taking more risk. Under the prevailing market environment where liquidity and sentiment are changing, small and medium cap stocks become better just because they offer more opportunities. Meanwhile, low priced stocks have dominated the gainers chart on weekly and daily basis, signaling investors’ interests in small and medium caps with strong fundamentals and high dividend yields, at a time inflation rate is on a steady increase. This has been fueled by government’s failure and/or refusal over the years to fix the nation’s comatose refineries that, nonetheless, continue to incur heavy unexplainable losses, while remaining a drain pipe in dwindling national revenue. This situation has been further worsened for citizens who are grappling with continued increases in electricity tariff and the age-long challenge of decayed national infrastructure, especially roads. Nonetheless, larger capital gains and yields are required to outrun inflation in the short term, following which the equity market remains the right investment vehicle today, despite the rising yields in the fixed income market. This is especially true during this earnings season peak with offer of dividend payment and reward for investors. Zenith Bank, for example, is having a dividend yield of 11.25% in less than 4 weeks of announcing its 2020 full-year numbers. The market is currently trading below the 39,000 basis points support level, a sign of volatility towards the next one that has been sported around 38,464.00bps. Should the index break this point, the next visible support is far below at 34,396.3bps, unless there is positive news or favourable policies capable of knee-jerking the market, while boosting market liquidity and sentiments. Investdata notes that technically, the ongoing negative move is best described as a market correction, even as the consistent downtrend could be linked to the sharp rally recorded in 2020, ahead of the full-year earnings season and Q1 numbers, coupled with favourable and positive economic indices. Market rebound can coexist with the uptrend in fixed income yields, following which we advise investors to play dividend stocks for reduced investment risk around the market. Meanwhile Monday’s trading opened slightly on the downside and oscillated on buying interests in low priced, medium and dividend-paying stocks, and selloffs in high cap stocks. This situation pushed the NSE’s index to an intraday low of 38,528.55 basis points from its highs of 38,653.42bps, before closing at 38,561.84bps. Market technicals were weak and mixed, with volume traded lower than previous day’s in the midst of breadth that favoured the bears on a selling pressure as revealed by Investdata’s Sentiments Report showing 27% ‘buy’ volume and 73% ‘sell’ position. Total transaction volume index stood at 0.40 points, just as energy behind the day’s performance remained weak, with Money Flow Index looking up slightly at 25.71pts, from the previous day’s 24.81pts, indicating that some funds entered the market, despite closing lower. Index and Market Caps The key performance index, at the end of Monday’s trading shed 86.46bps, closing at 38,561.84bps after opening at 38,648.48bps, representing a 0.20% decline. Similarly, market capitalization shed N45.34bn, closing at N20.18tr, from previous day’s N20.20tr, which also represented 0.20% value loss. Monday’s downturn was driven by selloffs in Nigerian Breweries, International Breweries, Guinness Nigeria, PZ Cussons, Dangote Sugar Refinery, Zenith Bank, and United Capital, among others. This impacted negatively on Year-To-Date loss which rose to 4.24%, just as market capitalization loss ballooned to N1.15tr, or 4.01% below its opening value for the year. Mixed Sector Indices Performance indexes across sectors were mixed, as the NSE Insurance and Energy index closed 1.98% and 0.66% higher respectively, while the NSE Consumer goods index led the decliners, after losing 1.52%. They were followed by Banking with 1.01% lower. Market breadth turned negative, as decliners outnumbered advancers in the ratio of 18:17; just as activities in volume and value terms dropped, as stockbrokers traded 184.53m shares worth N2.52bn. The day’s volume was driven by transactions in FBNH, Notore Chemicals, Fidelity Bank, Sovereign TRUST Insurance and Transcorp The best performing stocks for the session were Coronation Insurance and NNFM, which gained 10% and 9.73% respectively, closing at N0.55 and N6.20 per share respectively on market forces and earnings expectations. On the flip side, Regency Assurance and Livestock lost 9.09% and 8.50% respectively, closing at N0.30 and N1.83 per share, on profit taking. Market Outlook We expect the mixed trend to continue as more corporate earnings hit the market in the face of rising fixed income market yields, oil prices and high dividend yields during this earnings season. WORDS TO TRADE BY “Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it earns it. He who doesn’t pay it.” - Albert Einstein Compound interest is a wonderful thing for those who understand it. For those who don't, it costs a lot of money. The reason we invest is to make money, and compound interest is a great tool for doing that. We can take our earnings, put them back in the market, and make more money each time. It may sound like a complicated math problem to many, but it really isn't. By keeping your profits and interest earned from trading in your account, you'll keep making more interest on what you have. That's how compounding works. In the long run, it's the best way to grow your wealth substantially, so don't brush it off!

Mixed Trend Ahead, Ahead Of Earnings, As Investors Watch Fixed Income Yields, Oi Market Update for the Week Ended March 12 and Outlook for March 15-19 It was another bearish week on Nigerian Stock Exchange, despite witnessing a mixed trend, and thereby extending its downtrend for the sixth successive weeks of selloffs and price correction at the peak month of 2020 full year earnings reporting season. The influence of highly capitalized stocks and rekindled interest among bargain hunters at the prevailing prices continues to impact positively on market breadth. This has reduced the wide range of negative sentiments, just as dividend yields of many stocks improved to make equities attractive for dividend investors. We note the changing price pattern and sentiment in the market, even as investors look out for more corporate earnings and economic data, one of which the February consumer price index scheduled for release any moment from now from the National Bureau of Statistics. Inflationary pressure is expected to wax stronger due to the continued hike in pump price of fuel with direct effects on cost of transportation of goods and services. We expect that the inflation rate will maintain and uptrend to keep returns in the fixed income in real red. During the week, worried investor and traders stayed on the fence to watch while pullbacks and corrections continued. Discerning and value investors should therefore keep their gaze on emerging opportunities, taking advantage of the low prices to position in high dividend-paying companies. Despite the continued drop in the market index, the situation reveals some measure of confidence among players. As such, it is important to let your investment objective: entry and exit strategies guide you to survive and profit from this trend, if the full-year earnings reports and dividend news fail to drive and change the trend, a big rotation in sector trends should also guide you, going into the future. Do not allow, the up and down movement in high cap stocks that rallied sharply in previous year to influence your decisions, because their price movements affect the NSE’s index action. It is necessary to focus on sectors and high yield dividend-paying stocks with strong growth prospects in 2021. Movement Of NSEASI The composite index recorded a mixed performance of two up markets and three sessions of losses last week to continue the correction and pullbacks mode, driven by economic headwinds and uncertainties. Added to this is the rising yield in treasury bills and bond market, with NTB primary auction rate moving to 6.5% from 5.5% for 364 days. Portfolio realignment have continued in the face of rising oil prices in the international market and earnings season as many company’s numbers and dividend news had beat market expectation but fail to support share prices due to weak liquidity and mixed sentiment. The week opened on a positive note to halt the previous negative outing as benchmark index recorded 0.18% up, but this trend reversed on Tuesday when the index lost 1.84% on selloffs among the high cap stocks. This trend was short-lived by midweek, with the index gaining 0.63% before yielding to selling pressure on Thursday and Friday the when the key performance index closed 0.60% and 0.08% lower respectively. This brought the week’s total loss to 1.74%, much more than previous week’s 1.18% decline, on low traded volume and negative breadth. Bringing the market total correction from its peak to 9% loss and YTD loss position standing at 4.03%. Subsequently, the key performance index shed 683.13 basis points during the week, closing at 38,648.481bps, after opening the week at 39,331.61bps. Within the period, the index touched an intra-week low of 38,486.13bps, compared to a high of 39,412.27bps, a situation attributed to selloffs among the high cap stocks like MTNN, Dangote Cement and others. Also, market capitalization lost N357.41bn. to N20.22tr, from the previous weekend’s N20.58tr. The advancers’ table for the period under review was dominated by low priced stocks as selloffs hits high and medium cap equities, with the trading and price pattern revealing selloffs and accumulation in some companies in the midst of mixed sentiment as price adjustment in the share price of United capital, Zenith Bank and Nigerian Breweries further depressed the market the period. During the period, decliners outpaced advancers in the ratio of 38:35 on a selling sentiment and weak momentum as Money Flow Index read 54.01bps, down from 58.78 points in the previous week. During the week also, three companies released their earnings reports, one of which was the audited 2020 full-year results from United Bank for Africa, with the directors offering dividend reward of 35 kobo, while the two others are unaudited from Jaiz Bank and Lasaco Assurance. NSEASI WEEKLY CHART MOVEMENT The bearish trend of the NSE’s index action continued on negative outing and volatility in the midst of changing price patterns on mixed sentiments, as dividend investors accumulate positionsin dividend paying stocks as more 2020 financials hit the market. Also, the index has broken down the 14-day moving average and is above the 20, 50 and 200-DMA on a weekly chart, despite breaking down the 40,000-mark strong support level on less than average traded volume and selling sentiments. This is likely to reverse as more players’ position for the rest of the month in expectation of earnings and quarter end repositioning ahead of Q2. Nevertheless, it is expected that the market will rebound at any time soon especially, as more listed companies releases their numbers to the market and trading above the 38,461.34bps level. The strong support level to watch out for on the NSE is within the 38,000 and 38,461.46bps, and a breakdown of these levels, will attract new positioning by traders. This is coming at a t time crude oil is trading above $69 per barrel at the international market, while the government officials have kick start the vaccination by being vaccinated on the national television to dismiss fear or rumor about the vaccines, However, we envisage a mixed outlook for the rest of Q1, while not ruling out profit booking as its ongoing, especially since the market had recorded an uptrend last year. Our mixed outlook is hinged on such factors as the possible impact of the corporate earnings, mismatch policies of government and Central Bank of Nigeria as COVID-19 vaccine first batch importation are being distributed among the states. There are also other factors like 2021capital budget, implications of oil prices trading above $69 per barrel on the nation’s revenue, just as Money Flow Index and MACD are bearish on a weekly chart. Mixed Sectoral Indices Performance indexes across the sectors were mixed, as NSE Insurance, Consumer goods and Energy, closed higher by 2.84%, 2.18% and 0.59% respectively, while NSE Banking led the decliners after losing 5.75%, followed by Industrial goods thatclosed 0.15% lower. The general market’s outlook remains dicey and mixed in the short-term; following which investors should take short and medium-term positions, while diversifying their portfolios along long-term trades to protect capital. This, they can do, by considering sectors with high upside potentials on the strength of earnings and policy influence. The recent market pullbacks call for portfolio adjustments and realignments, as unaudited and audited numbers from some companies and sectors will expectedly come mixed, given the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the arson that followed the #EndSARS protests on full-year results, as revealed by the macroeconomic indices. Activities in volume and value terms were down during the week by 19.62% and 20.85% respectively, as players transacted 1.68bn shares worth N23.54bn, compared to previous week’s 2.09bn units valued at N29.74bn. Volume was driven by trades in Financial Services, Consumer and Industrial goods sectors, particularly UBA, FBNH, Zenith Bank, Champion andTranscorp. Champion Breweries and Regency were the best performing stocks in the week gaining 45.34% and 22.22% respectively, closing at N2.44 and N0.33 each on market forces, while Eterna and Meyer lost 18.95% and 18% respectively, at N4.62 and N0.41 per share on profit booking. Market Outlook We expect the mixed trend to continue as more corporate earnings hit the market in the face of rising fixed income market yields, oil prices and high dividend yields during this earnings season. Also, the pullbacks offer bargain hunters and income investors another opportunity to reposition in value and growth stocks that are underpriced, while more companies release their full-year numbers to support recovery. This is based on the fact that the rising fixed income yields may not be enough to scare all investors away from the equity market. Again, the way to go is: Target dividend-paying stocks and fundamentally sound companies with growth prospects in 2021, looking the way of mispriced equities. The NSE’s index action and indicators are in divergence on a low traded volume and positive buying sentiments. https://investdata.com.ng/mixed-trend-ahead-ahead-of-earnings-as-investors-watch-fixed-income-yields-oil/

NGSE Index Suffers Another Deep Cut On Earnings Reactions, Dividend yields Gets Better Still Market Update for March 9 The Nigerian Stock Exchange again closed negative on Tuesday, overpowered by the bears, propelled by seaming negative reactions to the audited full-year audited numbers presented on Monday by the United Bank for Africa, and in particular, the dividend cut. This led to selloffs and panic exit among investors, a situation that rubbed off on other banking stocks and blue chip companies, made worse by its coinciding with the share price adjusted of Zenith Bank for the N2.70 per share dividend proposed by its directors. This further helped to drag the market down in the midst of earnings season. Also on Tuesday, the market has finally broke down the 39,000 mark again on market correction and selloffs, ahead of a major support level around 38,464.00bps. A breakdown of this point should lead to the next visible support at 34,396.3 points, following which value and growth investing should be the next rational strategies to adopt in this market as things unfold. Note, therefore, that technically, the ongoing negative move has been described as market correction, even as the consistent downtrend could be linked to the sharp rally recorded in 2020 and in January, ahead of the full year earnings season and Q1 numbers, coupled with favorable and positive economic indices. Market rebound can coexist with the uptrend in fixed income yields, following which we advise investors to play defensive and dividend stocks to reduced investment risk around the market. Also important at this time is the ongoing recovery in crude oil prices, as Brent now trades above $70 per barrel and farther above the government’s benchmark budget price, which means that public spending would receive a boost if it continues and oil price even attains the projections, driving economic fundamental and recovery. It would also require a realignment of fiscal and monetary policies to make them complementary for the nation to achieve the desired economic objective. Tuesday’s trading opened on the downside and was sustained throughout the session on selloffs among bellwether stocks, a situation that pushed the composite index below 39,000 psychological line to an intraday low of 38,686.85 basis points from its high of 39,319.17bps, and thereafter closed below its opening point at 38,686.85bps on above average traded volume. Index and Market Caps The key performance index, at the end of Tuesday’s trading suffered the deepest cut in recent time, losing 709.72bps to close at 38,686.85bps after opening at 39,396.57bps, representing a 1.80% decline. Similarly, market capitalization fell by N371.33bn, closing at N20.24tn, from previous day’s N20.61tr, which also represented 1.80% depreciation in value. The day’s downtrend was driven by selloffs in stocks like MTNN, Lafarge, FBNH, UBA, Julius Berger, Access Bank, Zenith Bank, and Guaranty Trust Bank, among others. This impacted negatively on Year-To-Date loss which rose to 3.93%, just as market capitalization loss increased to N815.61bn, or 3.87% below its opening value. Bearish Sector Indices All the sectorial performance indexes were in the red, except for NSE Consumer goods that closed higher by 0.39%, while the NSE Bankingindex led the decliners, after losing 5.30%, followed by Insurance, Industrial goods and Oil/Gas with 0.63%, 0.52% and 0.15% respectively lower. Market breadth turned negative, as decliners outnumbered advancers in the ratio of 26:14; just as transaction in volume and value terms grew, with stockbrokers exchanging 489.98m shares worth N6.65bn. Volume was driven by trades in UBA, Mutual Benefits Assurance, FBNH, Access Bank and Zenith Bank. Champion Breweries and Neimeth Pharmaceutical were the best performing stocks gaining 9.78% and 9.71% respectively, closing at N2.02 and N1.92 per share respectively on market forces. On the flip side, UBA and Eterna lost 10% each, closing at N7.20 and N5.13 per share, on panic exit and selloffs. Market Outlook We expect the losing momentum to slowdown as more corporate earnings hit the market in the face of rising Treasury Bills yields, oil prices and high dividend yields during this earnings season, as the pullbacks offer bargain hunters another opportunity to reposition, while more companies release their full-year numbers to support recovery. This is based on the fact that the rising fixed income yields may not be enough to scare all investors away from the equity market. Again, the way to go is: Target dividend-paying stocks and fundamentally sound companies with growth prospects in 2021, looking the way of mispriced equities.
