As NGSE Index Drops Lower, Time To Seek Dividend, Sound, Mispriced Stocks

Market Update for February 9

The bearish mode of the nation’s equity market expectedly reduced in intensity on Tuesday, after low cap stocks sustained an uptrend, with the Nigerian Stock Exchange All-Share index closing the session marginally lower on a low traded volume and flat market breadth.

The day’s price action signalled the willingness of market players to take controlled risk at this moment, which is another bullish sign that needs confirmation at the end of midweek’s trading, as investors keep their gaze on early filers whose audited results are being expected any moment from next week, coupled with the expected January inflation data from National Bureau of Statistics.

The over one-week of divergence between the oil price rallying above its one-year high at $61.03 per barrel as of yesterday, and the Nigerian equity market’s sustained pullback, even as the peak of the earnings reporting season draw closer, have become a source of concern to many investors and traders. This, therefore, calls for cautious trading as reflected already in the transaction volume and persistent profit taking.

However, with the expected 2020 full-year audited reports and improved dividend yields as a result of this correction, the market looks to early filers like sister companies- United Capital and Africa Prudential, as well as Zenith Bank, Cadbury and Nigerian Breweries, among others to change the current trend, depending on juicy their dividend news is to investors.

Tuesday’s trading started slightly on the upside and oscillated between mid-morning and afternoon on profit taking and selloffs across all sectors, pushing the composite NSEASI to an intraday low of 41,510.16 basis points, from its highs of 41, 564.16bps. Thereafter, the session finished below its opening level at 41,510.16bps.

Index and Market Caps

Specifically, the NSEASI closed 54.15 basis points down on Tuesday at 41,510.16bps compared to the 41,564.31bps it opened, representing a 0.13% drop, just as market capitalization fell by N28.33bn, at N21.72tr, from its N21.74tr, also representing 0.13% depreciation in value.

Attention: If you have not signed up for Investdata buy and sell signal setup, don’t delay. We have just added 20 STOCKS TO WATCH THAT ARE BUILDING NEW BULLISH BASE to our watchlist. These stocks are with double potentials to rally considering their current market value.

To become a member, send ‘YES’ or ‘STOCKS’ to the phone numbers below. Take advantage of this service to buy right and sell right at the current market recovery ahead of portfolio reshuffling and repositioning as we await an economic reform policy to stimulate and re-track the economy again.

The downturn was due to continued selloffs in Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank, UBA, PZ Cussons, International Breweries, Guinness, UACN, Lafarge Africa, and Ardova, among others. This impacted mildly on the market, leaving Year-To-Date gain at 3.08%, just as YTD gain in market capitalization stood at N723.67bn, or 3.21%.

Also on Tuesday, 11 Plc (formerly Mobil Oil Nigeria) began the process of delisting its entire shares from the NSE (READ MORE), just as SUNU Assurances announced the success of its private placements for N3.01bn as part of the insurance sector capitalisation exercise (READ MORE).

Bearish Sector Indices

Performance indexes across the sectors were bearish, as the NSE Insurance index led the decliners with a loss 1.73%, followed by the Banking, Consumer, Energy and industrial goods with 0.53%, 0.25%, 0.25% and 0.04% lower respectively.

Market breadth was equilibrium, as advancers were equal to decliners in the ratio of 23:23; just as activities in volume and value terms were mixed, as transacted volume was down by 10.15% as investors exchanged 305.93m shares from the previous day 340.28m units, while traded value rose by 49.66% to N3.95bn from Monday’s N2.64bn. Volume was driven by trades in FBNH, Guinness, RT Briscoe, Zenith Bank and Sterling Bank

Champion Breweries and RT Briscoe were the best performing stocks, after gaining 10% each, at N2.75 and N0.22 per share, on market forces, while on the flip side, NNFM and NEM Insurance lost 9.94% and 9.20%, closing at N7.79 and N2.27per share, on profit taking.

Market Outlook

Market breadth closed flat on a reduced losing momentum and profits taking, as bargain hunters took advantage of the pullbacks to reposition their portfolios ahead of earnings expectations and reaction to numbers that would be unveiled, given that dividend yield remains relatively high. We advise that you target dividend-paying stocks and fundamentally sound companies with growth prospect in 2021, looking the way of mispriced ones, especially given the rising oil prices that had so far supported the economy and equity market. Despite the seeming improvement in the fixed income yield that had remain in negative real return due to high inflation.

There is, nonetheless, also the likelihood of a reversal in trend and continuation, as investors position in high yields stocks ahead of the earnings season. Also, important is the fact that technical indicators reveal overbought on the weekly and daily chart, while the RSI read 70 points and above, a situation that supports the likelihood of another correction.

However, the strong and faster recovery may continue, depending on market forces, going forward, as propelled by expected 2020 full earnings reports, especially now that the outcome of the MPC meeting has given the market a direction, until the next gathering in March.

The NSE’s index action and indicators are looking up in the same direction on a very high traded volume and positive buying sentiments.

Again, the current undervalued state of the market offers investors opportunities to position for the short, medium and long-term, which is why investors should target fundamentally sound, and dividend-paying stocks for possible capital appreciation in the rest of the year.

Loss Momentum May Slowdown, As Investors Position Ahead Of Early Filers

Market Update for February 8
Equity prices moved further lower on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) Monday, starting the week on a negative note, thereby extending the bear transition for the sixth consecutive session on a low traded volume, but positive breadth. This signals a change in trading pattern that supports reversal, which is a function of market forces in the next trading day to confirm trend.

As the spread of Coronavirus pandemic slows down in different parts of the world, and with the vaccine rollout efforts likely to generate and support an increased buying interest, market players remaining optimistic about the outlook for the global and domestic economy,

Also, on Monday, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), following the conclusion of the Article IV consultation with Nigeria, said given the impact of the pandemic the Nigerian economy could contract by as much as 3.2% in 2020 when its final GDP figures are released in the coming weeks. The good news is that it could turn the corner this year when it is projected to grow by 1.5%, depending on how certain things play out during the year (READ MORE).

Following the pullbacks seen in the previous week, bargain hunting activities are obvious in the market as revealed by the positive breadth and low traded volume that indicates the possibility of smart money marking up prices ahead of the earnings reporting season, while early filers are likely to release their numbers any moment from now.

The relative market stability in the midst of continued profit taking, reactions to the Q4 unaudited earnings news continue, with investors taking advantage of the price correction to reposition. These are also happening at a time oil price is at its one-year high of $60.10, and the improvement in fixed income yields is yet no threat to the stock market, given that the dividend yields of many companies remain attractive.

However, with the expected 2020 full-year audited reports and improved dividend yields as a result of this correction, the market looks to early filers like United Capital, Africa Prudential, Zenith Bank, and Nigerian Breweries, among others, to start submitting their scorecards from this week. This situation could obviously change the current trend, depending however on the strength of their corporate actions.

Meanwhile, Monday’s trading opened on the upside, turning red between the midday and afternoon on profit taking and selloffs in the banking, consumer and insurance, which pushed the composite All-Share index to an intraday low of 41,536.70 basis points, from its highs of 41,737.056bps. Thereafter, the session notched some points but still finished below its opening level at 41,564.31bps.

Market technicals were negative and mixed, as volume traded was lower than the previous day’s in the midst of breadth that favoured the bulls on high selling pressure as revealed by Investdata’s Sentiments Report showing 86% ‘sell,’ and 14% buy position. Total transaction volume index stood at 0.60 points, just as the momentum behind the day’s performance remained relatively strong, with Money flow index dropping to 47.86pts, from the previous day’s 54.86pts, indicating that funds left the market as selloffs persist,

Index and Market Caps

At the end of Monday’s trading, the benchmark NSEASI shed 114.78 basis points, closing at 41,564.31bps from the 41,709.09bps it opened, representing a 0.35% decline, just as market capitalization lost N74bn, closing at N21.74 trillion from N21.82tr, which represented 0.34% decline. This marginal difference in both indicators was due to the listing of 10 million new ordinary shares of Briclinks Plc at N6.26 per unit.

Monday’s downtrend was driven by profit taking and selloffs in Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank, Flour Mills, PZ Cussons, Champion Breweries, and Dangote Sugar, among others. ‘This impacted negatively on the market, reducing Year-To-Date gain to 3.21%, just as YTD gain in market capitalization stood at N745.01bn, or 3.34%.

Bearish Sector Indices

All the sectorial indexes were bearish, save for the NSE Industrial Goods that closed 0.05% higher, while the NSE Banking index led the decliners, losing 2.68%, followed by the Insurance, Consumer and Energy with 0.84%, 0.25% and 0.01% lower respectively.

Market breadth turned positive, as advancers outnumbered decliners in the ratio of 22:16; just as activities in volume and value terms were down by 29.45% and 54.65% respectively, while stockbrokers traded 340.28m shares worth N2.64bn, as against the previous day’s 482.32m units valued at N5.38bn. The day’s volume was driven by trades in UBN, FBNH, Access Bank, Transcorp and Zenith Bank.

Multiverse and Fidson Healthcare were the best performing stocks, gaining 8.33% and 8.30% respectively, at N0.26 and N6.00 per share, on market forces and dividend expectations, while on the flip side, Champion Breweries and PZ lost 9.75% and 9.73%, closing at N2.50 and N5.11per share, on profit taking.

Market Outlook

We expect the market to slowdown its losing momentum and profits taking, as bargain hunters take advantage of the pullbacks to reposition their portfolios ahead of earnings expectations and reaction to numbers that would be unveiled. This is given that dividend yield remains relatively high. We advise investors to target dividend-paying stocks and fundamentally sound companies with growth prospect in 2021, looking the way of mispriced ones, especially given the rising oil prices that had so far supported the economy and equity market. CBN’s Move Against Crypto currency Investors May Boost Funds Inflow To NGSE

Market Update for the Week Ended Feb. 5 and Outlook for 8-12

The first full trading week of February ended last week on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) with a negative sentiment and outlook, on the back of profit taking and selloffs that halted the uptrend and recovery move. This reflected in the benchmark All-Share index (ASI) which had been up on positive sentiments and improved liquidity, among others.

It is noteworthy that on the last trading day of week, the market signaled a change in pattern, with bargain hunters taking advantage of the pullbacks to reposition in different classes of stocks that had suffered price cuts during the period. Investors continue that reviews ahead of the earnings reporting season, and release by the National Bureau of Statistics of the year’s first inflation data.

Friday’s buying sentiment in the midst of profit booking and portfolio repositioning helped the market resist further decline, as it closed marginally lower on a low traded volume and negative breadth.

The composite NSEASI witnessed a pullback during the week, breaking down the 42,000 psychological lines on profit booking in high cap stocks, and buying interests in dividend paying equities. These boosted the week’s volume, revealing new positioning in sectors that were behind during late last year’s rally.

In equity investment and trading, taking profit is as important as positioning in fundamentally sound stocks. After all, you only make money when you close a position and take money off the table.

Notwithstanding the current trend, Investdata believes the market still has some inherent value for those investors who know where to look.

We note that during the last year and month, analysts and investors have spoken a lot about valuation, even as equities repeatedly make new 52-week highs, with questions centered on overvalued stocks and the market’s overbought region.

The Nigerian stock market has been driven and supported in recent months by factors such as the low interest rate regime, following the decision of the monetary policy authority to leave rates unchanged at its meeting that ended last week, and the rising crude oil price in the international market. Changes in oil price are a function of demand and supply, with output determined by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries. We note the rise in price arising from the voluntary production cut by some oil producing countries, including OPEC and non-OPEC members, otherwise known as OPEC+, following which it current hit its year-high of $59.37 per barrel, a juicy improvement on Nigeria’s 2020 and 2021 budget benchmark prices of $40 and $45 respectively.

Movement Of NSEASI

It was a bearish trading week, with five sessions of down markets due to profit-taking and portfolio reshuffling dominated by selling positions.

The index opened on the downside Monday, losing 0.20% due to profit booking and indecision among players, a trend that was sustained on Tuesday when the benchmark index closed 0.74% lower. The bearish trend was extended for the rest of the week as the index lost 0.1% at the midweek, before shedding 0.51% and 0.18% on Thursday and Friday respectively. This resulted in a total loss of 1.66% during week, from previous week’s 3.44% gain, on a high traded volume and negative breadth.

Specifically, the index shed 703.57 basis points, closing at 41,709.09bps, after opening the week at 42,412.66bps. During the period, the index touched an intra-week low of 41,522.14bps, compared to its highs of 42,472.56bps. This resulted from profit taking and increased selling pressure in high and medium cap stocks, just as market capitalization fell by N368bn to N21.82tr, from the previous weekend’s N22.19tr, representing a 1.66% value loss.

The advancers’ table was dominated by low and medium cap stocks, reflecting the mixed sentiments, with the trading pattern revealing profit taking and selloffs, on a negative negative that supports lower prices and pullbacks among all classes stocks.

During the period, decliners outpaced advancers in the ratio of 60:22 on a selling sentiment and weak momentum as Money Flow Index read 80.50bps, down from 88.81 points in the previous week. During the week, many companies released unaudited quarterly and 2020 full year result, just as more quoted companies notified the Exchange of closed period for their audited 2020 financials and board meetings.

NSEASI WEEKLY CHART MOVEMENT

The NSE’s index action was bearish and volatile during the week on a mixed sentiments, as discerning investors accumulates position among dividend paying stocks ahead of the release of 2020 financials in this month and next. Also, the index is trading above the seven, 50 and 200-Day Moving Average, despite breaking down the 42,000 mark strong support level on a high traded volume and mixed sentiments. This is likely to reverse as more players’ position for the rest of the month in expectation of earnings.

Nevertheless, it is expected that the market will turn up at any time especially, as early filers start releasing their numbers to the market and trading above the 42,000bps level.

This is also especially as factors that supported the market to this level remain intact, even as the recent decision of the CBN to shut out crypto currency traders from the Nigerian financial system. We see this as likely to herd the investors into the equities market, serving as a new tonic for rebound, especially as the fixed income yield remains unattractive, despite the seeming improvement.

The strong resistance level to watch out for on the NSE is within 42.412.66 and 43,000bps, and a break out of these levels, will attract new positioning by traders, given that crude oil is trading almost at $60 in the international market and the government is expecting the first batch of Coronavirus vaccines in this month.

However, we envisage a positive outlook for the rest of Q1, while not ruling out profit booking any time soon, after the market had maintained an uptrend since last year. Also, the impact of the ban on cryptocurrency, border reopening, expected COVID-19 vaccine importation, high liquidity, and extension of the 2020 capital budget implementation. There is also the impact of oil prices trading above $59 per barrel, from its March 2020 low, given strong Money Flow Index, as MACD remains in the bullish zone on a weekly chart. ‘Buy’ volume for the period stood at 20% and sell position at 80% with total transaction index at 1.45.

Bearish Sectoral Indices

The week’s sectoral indexes closed the week bearish, led by NSE Insurance with shed 6.01%, followed by Consumer Goods, Banking, Industrial goods and Oil/Gas which closed 3.22%, 2.28%, 2.07% and 0.16% lower respectively.

The general market outlook remains strong and mixed in the short-term; following which investors should take short and medium-term positions, while diversifying their portfolios along long-term trades to protect capital. This, they can do, by considering sectors with high upside potentials on the strength of earnings and policy influence. The recent market pullback calls for portfolio adjustments and realignments as unaudited numbers from some companies and sectors will expectedly come mixed, given the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the arson that followed the #EndSARS protests on full-year results, as revealed by the macroeconomic indices.

Transactions in volume and value terms were up by 7.78% and 6.49% respectively, as investors exchanged 2.77bn shares worth N29.69bn, compared to previous week’s 2.57bn units valued at N27.88bn. Volume was driven by trades in Financial Services, Conglomerates and consumer goods sectors, particularly stocks like UBN, FBNH, Transcorp, Zenith Bank and Guaranty Trust Bank.

The best performing stocks for the week, were McNichol and Jaiz Bank which gained 43.14% and 10.77% respectively, closing at N0.73 and N0.72 each on market sentiments and expected full-year earnings reports, while Linkage Assurance and Japaul Gold lost 33.33% and 17.58% respectively, at N0.60 and N0.75 per share on market forces and profit booking.

Market Outlook

We expect the market to slowdown its losing momentum and profits taking, and reverse up on bargain hunters take advantage of the pullbacks to reposition their portfolios ahead of earnings expectations and reactions to numbers that would be unveiled, given that dividend yield remains relatively high. We advise that you target dividend-paying stocks and fundamentally sound companies with growth prospect in 2021, looking the way of mispriced ones, especially given the low interest rates regime and sustained oil price rally that have so far supported the economy and equity market.

Again, the current undervalued state of the market offers investors opportunities to position for the short, medium and long-term, which is why investors should target fundamentally sound, and dividend-paying stocks for possible capital appreciation in the rest of the year.

Your Failure-Avoidance Center... and everything in-between

Ambrose Here Again,

Habenula:
Our Failure-Avoidance Center
Without you taking any risk in life, your growth is impossible... Nature and other circumstances beyond your control force you to automatically deplete in your finance.

Stop and think about that statement for a moment. It’s in our nature to avoid risk. Dr. Britt Andreatta in Wired to Resist discusses the “Habenula: Our Failure-Avoidance Center”, and how it functions to release certain chemicals in the brain that in essence reward success and punish failure.

Nothing Risked...
Nothing Ventured
Yet, when you really get down to the bottom line, you’ve got to be willing to risk something (whether it is risking your reputation, finances, time) in order to really grow.

You need a mindset that is willing to embrace risk (If you so choose). A mindset that is striving to take that next step. To keep going. A mindset that understands that without this, you won’t be able to move forward.

reminiscence...
moving forward...
This is true both for your finance, investment, and your personal life. As I think back over my career, I wouldn’t have been where I am today without being willing to take risks. This is true for both my time working in a large-size organization, as well as when I decided to start InvestData Consulting Limited.

People who find success and continue to advance are those who keep pushing for their best. Whether they tackle a project that seems impossible, push to break record sales goals, start a new product line, and so on.

Whatever the goal, people with a mindset that embraces risk understand that you can’t allow the fear of failure or fear of losing your money hold or any other fear to hold you back. After all, everything in this life is a risk...

So, are you willing to take the risk?

Recently, I introduced you to the different material you must have if you are a serious investor in 2021. They include:

Mixed Trends Ahead, As NSEASI Set To Breakout 2017 highs, Gains N1.0tr YTD

Market Update for January 28

The bullish nature of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) continued Thursday, but at a decreasing momentum, with month-end trading pattern dynamics revealing the possibility of profit booking. This was especially as the benchmark All-Share index extended its bull run for the fourth consecutive trading session, closing higher on improved transaction volume and buying position.

Also on Thursday, the market finally broke out the of 42,000 psychological line, helped by the influx of unaudited corporate earnings offering n insight into what investors should expect from the 2020 December year-end audited earnings reports. This is in the midst of positive sentiments that have been helped by the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to leave rates unchanged, following which funds continue to enter the market as indicated by money flow index and sentiment report. It is safe to expect mixed trends and sentiments, with the NSE’s index action set to breakout 2017 highs.

Consequently, we advise that players should take advantage of breakouts to position in dividend-paying stocks, with numbers likely to beat expectation, given that the factors driving the rally remain intact. We note too that trading patterns are supporting mispriced stocks and high yield dividend-paying companies. However, let us not forget that profit taking and price correction are integral parts of stock market investing or trading.

The numbers released so far are providing a more directional investment strategy for investors, but the continued upward trend could also be linked to the several moves by the government, especially through the CBN to take the economic out of recession. We note too that corporate earnings and indeed the stock market are already pointing to a recovery from recession. Despite these moves, we advise that traders and investors should play with caution, considering the sharp movement in the market and happenings around the globe.

Meanwhile, Thursday trading opened on the upside and was sustained throughout the session on increased accumulation of dividend stocks, a situation that pushed the NSE index to an intraday high of 42,192.82 basis points, from lows of 41,924.82bps. Thereafter, it closed the day at 42,169,41bps.

Thursday’s market technicals were positive and strong, with higher volume traded than previous day’s in the midst of positive breadthand buying sentiment as revealed by Investdata’s Sentiments Report showing 91% ‘buy’ and 9% sell position. Total transaction volume index stood at 1.02 points, just as the energy behind the day’s performance remained relatively strong, with Money flow index reading 56.40pts, from the previous day’s 51.78pts, indicating that new funds entered the market.

Index and Market Caps

The composite index, at the end of Thursday’s trading, gained 238.68bps, closing at 42,169.41bps after opening at 41,930.73bps, representing a 0.57% up, just as market capitalization rose by N124.86bn, crossing the N22tr level, its historic high at N22.06tr, from its opening value of N21.93tr, also representing a 0.57% appreciation in value.

Take advantage of this service to buy right and sell right at the current market recovery ahead of earnings season as we await an economic reform policy to stimulate and re-track the economy again.

Thursday’s uptrend was driven by demand for banking stocks and others like Julius Berger, Flourmills, NB, Guinness, Dangote Sugar,Lafarge Africa and Vitafoam, raising Year-To-Date gain mildly to 4.71%, just as YTD gain in market capitalization stood at N1.002tr, or 4.76%.

Mixed Sector Indices

The sectoral performance indexes were mixed, as the NSE Oil/Gas and Insurance closed lower by 1.75% and 0.56% respectively, while the Banking index led the advancers after gaining 2.11%, followed by Consumer and Industrial Goods, with 0.94% and 0.21% respectively up.

Market breadth was positive as advancers outnumbered decliners in the ratio of 28:21; just as activities in volume and value terms were mixed with volume traded rising by 2.17% to 555.32m shares, from the previous day 543.6m units, while transaction value declined by 21.26% to N5.76bn from midweek’s N7.32bn. The day’s volume was boosted by activities in Transcorp, UBN, Zenith Bank, Dangote Sugar and UACN.

Portland Paints and Julius Berger were the best performing stocks, after gaining 10% and 9.95% respectively, closing at N3.19 and N22.65 per share, on market sentiment and forces. On the flip side, Skyway Aviation and Cornerstone Insurance lost 10% and 9.72%, closing at N2.88 and N0.65per share on profit booking.

Market Outlook

Being the last trading day of the week and month, we expect a mixed performance and profits taking, after the NSEASI broke out the 42,000bps to trade outside the upper Bollinger band line on a new trend amidst the persisting buying interests in mispriced companies and dividend-paying stocks, and ahead of the market’s major earnings reporting season. This is especially as the low interest rates regime and oil price have so far supported the Nigerian economy and equity market.

There is, nonetheless, also the likelihood of a reversal in trend and continuation, as investors position in high yields stocks in the New Year. Also, important is the fact that technical indicators reveal overbought on the weekly and daily chart, while the RSI reads 70 points and above, a situation that supports the likelihood of another correction.

Post-MPC Meeting: Investors Shed Caution Mode, As NGSE Index Climbs Higher

Market Update for January 27

Equity prices closed higher on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) at midweek as buying pressure increased as if to confirm that investors were waiting to see whether the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) would pull a surprise at its first meeting of the year which ended on Tuesday. The exchange thereby extended the bull transition for a third successive session on a high traded volume and positive sentiment for Telecoms, Insurance, Banking, Industrial, and consumer goods stocks, which pushed the composite NSE All-Share index higher.

Also on Wednesday, more unaudited results and closed period of companies hit the market in preparation for the main earnings reporting season, even as Livestock Feeds, Cadbury, and Julius Berger, among others released their Q4 and 2020 unaudited reports.

The day’s gain pushed the NSEASI made a new 52-weeks high so early in the year, on a renewed buying pressure ahead of the earnings season and strong volatility that revealed the entrance of funds into the equity space. These investors are searching for higher yield, as well as in dividend-paying and undervalued stocks with strong prospects to grow their earnings in this earnings season, for which reasons they have remained investors’ toast. Such stocks that continue to attract investor attention include: Airtel Africa, MTN Nigeria, May/Baker, United Capital, Lafarge Africa, and Champion Brewery, are selling at their new 52-week high on a strong demand that suggest their prices could still go higher, notwithstanding the expected profit booking.

However, the market has broken out the 41,642.33 ahead of 42,000 psychological line on a positive breadth in the midst of month-end window dressing and repositioning for early filers of the 2020 year-end audited earnings report as revealed by historical data and patterns. It is safe to expect mixed trends and sentiments, as the NSE’s ‘V-shaped recovery is set to breakout the 2017 highs on bargain hunting, while smart money is moving to mark up prices, ahead of the current earnings reporting season.

In all these our advice is that traders should take advantage of the breakouts to position in dividend-paying stocks, with numbers likely to beat expectation, given that the NSE’s index action and money flow index are looking up. Also, do not forget to take profit when set targets are met, because profit taking and price correction are integral parts of stock market investing or trading.

Midweek’s trading started on the upside and was sustained throughout the session on increased buying interests that pushed the benchmark index to an intraday high of 41,936.48 basis points, from its 41,584.94bps lows. Thereafter, it closed the day above its opening figure at 41,930.73bps.

Market technicals were positive and strong, with higher volume traded than previous day’s in the midst of breadth that favoured the bulls on a positive buying sentiment as revealed by Investdata’s Sentiments Report showing 98% ‘buy’ and 2% sell position. With a total transaction volume index of 1.02 points, the impetus behind the day’s performance remained relatively strong, with Money flow index reading 51.78pts, a slight improvement over the previous day’s 50.04pts, indicating that new funds entered the market.

Index and Market Caps

At the end of Wednesday’s trading, the NSE All Share index gained 345.79 basis points, closing at 41,930.73bps after opening at 41,584.94bps, representing a 0.83% growth. Similarly, market capitalization rose by N180.88bn, closing at N21.93tr, from its opening value of N21.75tr, also representing a 0.83% value gain.

Take advantage of this service to buy right and sell right at the current market recovery ahead of earnings season as we await an economic reform policy to stimulate and re-track the economy again.

The session’s upturn was driven by demand for stocks like MTNN, Airtel Africa, Fidson, UBA, Lafarge Africa, Zenith Bank, United Capital and Julius Berger, among others, raising Year-To-Date gain mildly to 4.12%, just as YTD gain in market capitalization stood at N923.38bn, or 4.62%.

Bullish Sector Indices

All the sectorial performance indexes were in green, except for the NSE Energy that closed 0.12% in the red, while the Insurance led the advancers after gaining 1.54%, followed by Industrial Goods, Banking and Consumer Goods, with 0.52%, 0.31% and 0.21% respectively up.

Market breadth was positive as advancers outnumbered decliners in the ratio of 35:21; just as transaction in volume and value terms were up by 16.18% and 31.55% respectively, after traders exchanged 543.6m shares worth N7.32bn, compared to the previous 467.89m units valued at N5.57bn. The day’s volume was boosted by activities in Transcorp, Japaul Gold, Zenith Bank, FBNH and UBA.

Consolidated Hallmark Insurance and Guinea Insurance were the best performing stocks, after gaining 10% each, closing at N0.44 and N0.22 per share, on market sentiment and forces. On the flip side, Skyway Aviation and Cornerstone Insurance lost 10% and 9.72%, closing at N2.88 and N0.65per share on profit booking.

Market Outlook

We expect the mixed performance and profits taking to continue, after the NSEASI broke out the 41,642.33bps to touch the upper Bollinger band line on a new trend that is set to breakout 42,000 mark, amidst the persisting buying interests in mispriced companies and dividend-paying stocks, ahead of the market’s major earnings reporting season. This is especially as the low interest rates regime and oil price have so far supported the Nigerian economy and equity market. There is also the likelihood of a reversal in trend and continuation, as investors position in high yields stocks in the New Year. Also, important is the fact that technical indicators reveal overbought on the weekly and daily chart, while the RSI reads 70 points and above, a situation that supports the likelihood of another correction.

Again, the current undervalued state of the market offers investors opportunities to position for the short, medium, and long-term, which is why investors should target fundamentally sound, and dividend-paying stocks for possible capital appreciation in the rest of the year.
