On Friday, April 22, 2022, a big Iroko fell in Yorubaland. That fateful Friday, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, the Alaafin of Oyo, joined his forebears. In the African culture, customs and traditions, Obas don’t’ die. They simply sleep. They merely exchange mortality for immortality. So it was with Iku Baba Yeye. There is no doubt that the passing of the Oyo monarch, after 52 years on the throne of his ancestors is like a library that goes ablaze. Oba Adeyemi III was more than a library. He was a walking encyclopedia of Yoruba cultures, customs, traditions, norms and the essence of the Race. From Oranmiyan, who established the throne of Oyo, to Oba Bello Gbadegesin Ladigbolu II, his immediate predecessor, Alaafin Adeyemi III had the privilege of having the longest reign on the ancient throne of Oyo. His passing therefore, on Friday, even at a very ripe age of 83, is no doubt a big loss to the entire Yorubaland. https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/alaafin-message-to-oyomesi-makinde/ |

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Muhammadu Buhari “over the failure to unblock the phone lines of over 72 million telecommunication subscribers barred from making calls on their SIMs.” According to the group, the suit followed the recent directive by the Federal Government to telecommunications companies to block outgoing calls on all unlinked lines, as the deadline for the verification expired on March 31. Following the directive, over 72 million subscribers have now been barred from making calls. In the suit number FHC/L/CS/711/2022 filed last week at the Federal High Court in Lagos, SERAP is seeking: “an order setting aside the directive by President Buhari to telecommunications companies to block outgoing calls on all unlinked lines without due process of law, and for being inconsistent with the requirements of legality, necessity and proportionality.” https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/serap-drags-buhari-to-court-over-blocked-phone-numbers/ |
A Muslim rights advocacy group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has opposed the endorsement of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for a second term. The group hinged its objection on the fact that Christians have had their two terms and it is the turn of Muslims to produce a governor by 2023. MURIC’s position was enunciated in a statement circulated among the media on Monday, 25th April, 2022. The statement was signed by the director of the organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola. https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/lagos-2023-dont-rob-peter-to-pay-paul-muric/ |
Perhaps this is why these women approached the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), that day with a question that remains a problem in marriages over a thousand years later: Domestic Violence or Domestic Abuse. On hearing of this abuse, the Prophet called the community to the Mosque for a meeting. Whenever there was something he felt all Muslims needed to know about or discuss, he would have Bilal Ibn Rabah, may Allah be pleased with him, give the call to prayer, even if it was not time for it. Then, when people came to the Mosque, he would lead them in prayer. This would be followed by a special sermon about a topic of concern or discussion about a particular situation. https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/domestic-violence-dangers-and-solutions/ |
International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) says a silent revolution is happening in Nigeria’s yam production systems as pebble-sized seed tubers, known as minitubers by researchers and “chin-chin” yam by farmers affiliated with the Yam Improvement for Income and Food Security in West Africa (YIIFSWA II), could change how yam is produced in the country. This follows the experiences of some farmers and seed entrepreneurs like Mohammed Isa Galadima from Paiko Local Government Area of Niger State. https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/iita-silent-yam-revolution-is-happening-in-nigeria/ |
The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB on Wednesday accused the Nigerian military of burning innocent citizens and their buildings alive in Imo State. Earlier this week, the Nigerian Army said its troops of 34 Artillery Brigade Nigerian Army on Sunday neutralized a member of the proscribed IPOB and its armed affiliate ESN at Ihioma Community in Orlu LGA of Imo State. But in a release on Wednesday, the spokesperson of the IPOB, Emma Powerful said the IPOB in very strong terms, condemns the ‘ongoing senseless attacks and killings in Imo State allegedly by the Nigeria military and Ebubeagu security outfit formed and financed by the Imo State politicians and their collaborators.’ https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/army-lied-they-are-burning-people-alive-in-imo-ipob/ |

Most parents like to think that their generation’s burden was the heaviest. And that today’s children are too soft and spoilt by the easy life to be up to any good. Well, I disagree. Or let me put that a bit differently: I don’t agree completely. The debate about just how far astray today’s children have gone was sparked afresh by the juvenile sex video of students of Chrisland School, VGC, Lagos, who had gone for the World Schools Games in Dubai between March 8 and 14. https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/chrislands-dubai-five-and-our-digital-footprints/ |
‘’It’s not my problem.’’ – This was President Muhammadu Buhari’s immutable response to a question on his thoughts on the 2023 elections. Buhari has been coerced and blandished to assert himself like former President Olusegun Obasanjo who assumed the de facto office of godfather and technically installing the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as president in 2007. But the president has remained stolid to these sweet temptations. https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/is-buhari-a-reluctant-political-godfather/ |

It seems that in the midst of anguish and gnashing of teeth, #Kemi Olunloyo, a blogger who cares less about emotions while plying her trade for profit, constantly enjoys choosing a perspective that not only tramples upon the grave of the dead, but also burdens the family and friends (#Frank Edwards in this case) of the deceased for the rest of their life. She claims Frank Edwards has been sleeping with Late Evangelist Osinachi Nwachukwu. Olunloyo as we all know will always have her own twist to every story. Look at the case of #Justice for Sylvester Omoroni for example. After reading her twist to the story, I couldn't help but wonder. If she had lost her empathy as a mother in Sylvester's case, did she also lose her identity as a woman in this case? Or like Bobrisky, is she also on a mind confusion adventure? Hearing about the death of this gifted singer Osinachi Nwanchukwu was a shocker, but the cause of her death wasn't in the least surprising. I see everywhere on Social Media that almost everyone has an opinion to share, ranging from the late singer being stuck in an abusive marriage, to the role the church had to play in keeping her in an abusive marriage. https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/remi-tinubu-bamise-and-osinachi-where-will-the-nigerian-woman-be-safe-from-abuse/ |
To some, she should have left the marriage long ago. But she didn’t despite many advice. If she did, possibly she would still be alive today, ministering? On which platform? In the presence of God? Still yielding to the Holy Spirit or the Spirit of Mammon? The soul of Osinachi was too important to God to be left in the hands of worldliness. Maybe He saw the wolves and dragon in wait for her to quit her marriage, for her devouring plans to be activated. https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/the-death-of-osinachi-the-true-story/ |
Let us for a moment believe Ortom, the beleaguered governor of Benue state who has had a running battle with killer herdsmen that have attempted his life and that of his predecessor at least once. Ortom’s predecessor, Gabriel Suswan, had told his survival story and his narrow escape. Ortom too nearly died but escaped by a whisker but his chief security officer, Chris Dega, who was a retired AIG of police, wasn’t so lucky. He died protecting Ortom. https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/pdp-zoning-dilemma-a-fatal-self-inflicted-injury/ |

Former Secretary of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State, Bobby Ekpenyong, is alleging that the administrations of Donald Duke and Loyel Imoke incurred huge public debts despite selling the state assets. Take for instance the constitutional provision that prevents ex-convicts from contesting for or holding public office for ten years. It has never been observed and no court has been able to enforce it. In 2018, Lawali Dogonkade, a lawmaker representing Kaura-Namoda in Zamfara state was convicted by a Gusau High Court of receiving a bribe of N4.5 million in a contract involving the sum of N31.2 million. He was sentenced to four years in prison with the option of a fine of N120, 000. He not only paid the fine but continued to occupy his seat at the state house of assembly. https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/the-reign-of-ex-convicts-in-nigeria/ |

It turns out Nigeria’s most famous, most celebrated, most decorated and super cop is a common criminal after all, worse than the criminals he was supposedly going after. And for years, the signs were all there for us to see. But, desperate for heroes, we bluntly refused to “see no evil, speak no evil” as evidence of the malfeasance of our celebrated super cop and his carefully assembled team – the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) – keeps mounting. But we ignored them all. https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/abba-kyari-is-a-perfect-reflection-of-the-nigerian-system/ |
Before now, there has been this praise of the positive impacts Buhari’s administration has brought to the country in respect to the end of the curse of fuel scarcity. To an extent the praise singers were right as fuel crisis had become part of an engrained recurring national problem in Nigeria until the coming of president Buhari. This assertion was always made in comparison to previous administrations as an edge Buhari has over them. https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/why-buhari-should-take-over-the-education-ministry/ |
US-based Nigerian-born public intellectual, Prof. Farooq Kperogi, says the APC and PDP should zone the 2023 presidency to the southeast. The professor of journalism made the call on Sunday when he appeared as a guest on the inaugural episode of the online talk show “90 Minutes Africa” hosted by Rudolf Okonkwo and Chido Onumah. Prof. Kperogi said he supports the ceding of power to the southeast so that the people of the region can be given a sense of belonging. “I will want the major political parties to be sensitive to people that have been excluded since 1999,” Prof. Kperogi stated, adding that he supports the ceding of “power to the southeast because that is the region that has never produced the president from 1999 until now.” https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/i-support-igbo-presidency-in-2023-prof-farooq-kperogi/ |

A statement signed by the Rivers State coordinator of the group, Ziad Fubara said that the comment by Wike was in bad taste and capable of causing unnecessary division in the party. President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday in Abuja said prioritizing infrastructure projects ameliorated hardship in some parts of the country, particularly the quick intervention on the Lagos-Ibadan route with completion of road and rail lines, which improved the traffic significantly. This was contained in a statement by Femi Adesina. “My objective was very clear, despite the dwindling resources, I wanted to deal with infrastructure across the country,’’ the President told a delegation from Kaduna State, led by the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, and Kaduna State Deputy Governor, Hadiza Sabuwa Balaraba at the State House. https://www.thenews-chronicle.com/people-could-have-been-trekking-from-lagos-to-ibadan-if-we-hadnt-intervened-in-road-rail-projects-buhari/ |
