Nairaland / General / NANS Praises Tinubu For The Exclusion Of Tertiary Institutions From IPPIS by Acechief: 11:01am On Dec 15, 2023
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) expressed its appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the exclusion of universities and other tertiary institutions from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

In a statement in Enugu, NANS President Pedro Obi commended President Tinubu for recognizing the challenges faced by these institutions and taking decisive action to amend the IPPIS policy.

NANS, representing Nigerian students, acknowledged President Tinubu’s dedication to advancing the education sector in Nigeria.

The decision to exempt tertiary institutions from IPPIS reflects his understanding of their unique needs and challenges.

“NANS, the umbrella body of Nigerian students, recognises President Tinubu’s commitment to the progress and development of the education sector in Nigeria.”

He said “His decision to amend the IPPIS policy and exempt tertiary institutions is a testament to his understanding of the unique needs and challenges faced by these institutions.”

The removal of universities and other tertiary institutions from IPPIS underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring the autonomy and effective administration of higher education institutions nationwide.

This aligns with the aspirations of Nigerian students for a robust and internationally competitive education system.

Nairaland / General / 5 Years After Retiring, Former Police Inspector Finds Himself Begging. by Acechief: 12:46pm On Dec 14, 2023
Sunday Ogwo Okpalle, once a dedicated police inspector in Niger state, found himself transformed by the twists of life into a beggar on the very streets he once patrolled. His years of service were primarily spent as a traffic officer, managing the bustling flows of vehicles in the state.

Fast forward to a Tuesday morning, a reporter encountered Okpalle amidst the daily hustle, trailing after motorists, Keke Napep drivers, and acaba passengers, desperately pleading for financial assistance to meet his basic needs.

Sadly, his appeals often fell on indifferent ears, with some motorists brushing him off as a regular sight, remarking, “Let him go, he begs here every day, he doesn’t even get tired.”

A glimpse into Mr. Okpalle’s life reveals a harsh reality. When interviewed by the press, he shared that the relentless hardships he faced left him with no choice but to resort to begging to stave off hunger.

Despite receiving a monthly pension of thirty thousand naira, he lamented that the irregular timing of these payments exacerbated his struggles.

Highlighting the discrepancy in his financial well-being, Okpalle reminisced about the days when he earned three to four thousand naira daily during his active service.

However, retirement brought an unexpected blow as he found himself without a steady income, resorting to begging just to put food on the table for his wife and five children.

The unraveling of Mr. Okpalle’s financial stability can be traced back to the mismanagement of his gratuity.

He disclosed that after enduring a prolonged wait of one and a half years, he was granted a meager 1.7 million naira instead of the anticipated 6 million naira.

Faced with mounting expenses related to his children’s education and household upkeep, the funds quickly depleted, leaving him with no option but to return to the streets, seeking alms to sustain his family.

In a plea to the federal government, Okpalle appealed for intervention, urging them to expedite the settlement of the remaining portion of his gratuity or provide assistance to lift him out of the abject poverty he currently endures.

His story serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of financial security, even for those who dedicated their lives to public service.

Nairaland / General / The Declinism Of Seeing A New Government As Worse Than The One Before by Acechief: 11:40am On Dec 14, 2023
It is not an exaggeration to opine that despite former President Muhammadu Buhari staying in office for two terms; which lasted 8 years that not a few Nigerians will confess that they did not feel any relief from his administration after the hardship his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan brought upon Nigerians, which he (Buhari) capitalized on to campaign that he would “Change” for the betterment of Nigerians as a people and Nigeria as a nation. In fact, not a few Nigerians will say that from all indications that Buhari’s government was better than that of former president Jonathan even if he had close to a decade in office to actualize the “Change” he promised to bring to bear on Nigeria. The reasons for scoring the former president low, particularly in this context, cannot be farfetched as no sooner he got hold of the rein of power, prices of all goods and services in Nigeria unprecedentedly went up, particularly essential commodities. It was that bad that each time one bought a product from the market and goes back the second day; it was noticed that the price had drastically increased.

Given the foregoing, it will not be a misnomer to say that it has become a trend in Nigeria to see each government that comes being worse than the one before.

In fact, right from the tenure of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, who led the country from 1960 to 1966, and that of General Aguiyi Ironsi whose tenure was cut short in 1966 to that of General Yakubu Gowon who presided over the affairs of Nigeria from 1966 to 1975, the trend of former administration been better than present administration has been in existence.

In fact, a peep into the dark underbelly of Nigeria’s political leadership shows that with the exception of the brief regime of General Murtala Ramat Mohammed; from 1975 to 1976, that virtually every nascent government was criticized for been worse than preceding government.

The regime of General Murtala Ramat Mohammed came, and was not vilified for bad leadership, though short-lived, it pragmatically focused on fighting corruption, pursuing social justice, and restoring public confidence, even as the regime also initiated the process of returning Nigeria to civilian rule, which was tragically cut short by his assassination in February 1976.

Following Mohammed’s assassination, General Olusegun Obasanjo assumed power as the head of state until 1979, thus through his presidency focusing on economic reforms, combating corruption, and advocating for African unity and development. Under his leadership, Nigeria transitioned back to civilian rule through the 1979 elections. Obasanjo later returned to the political scene and was democratically elected as Nigeria’s president in 1999, serving two terms until 2007.

To cut the narrative short, it expedient to opine that the trend of seeing a new government as been worse than previous government did not begin today. That said, it is expedient to urge the reader of this piece to ask any Bible scholar why people always compare past and present governments in terms of performance, and conclude that the incumbent government is worse than the preceding government. In making the foregoing enquiry from a bible scholar or a clergyman the response that may likely be gotten is that despite Moses being often cited as a biblical example of servant-leadership, his leadership style was condemned by some sect of people that fell within the purview of his leadership so much that they yearned to go back to Egypt where they were subjected to the slave masters ‘oppressive dispositions as they were placed under forced labor. Worse still, the Bible recorded that they built cities for Pharaoh, and that the Egyptians feared the Israelites and made their lives miserable with hard labor, making brick and mortar, and with work in the fields.

Despite the oppression which the Israelites suffered in the hands of the Egyptians, they soon forgot under Moses’ leadership, and even yearned to go back to Egypt as they at a point whined, “If only the LORD had killed us back in Egypt,” they moaned. “There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death.”

Analyzed from the foregoing perspective, it is expedient to say that despite former President Muhammadu Buhari’s woeful performance as Nigeria’s president that not a few Nigerians, like the Israelites, have today started to be nostalgic of how the economy was before the nascent administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commenced just few months ago.

For instance, social media platforms are literarily awash with videos posted by some Nigerians crying out for succor as the rising cost of living bites.

One of the skit makers or video makers, disclosed that he voted for the All Progressives Congress (APC) because he believed in President Bola Tinubu, but he now gets slapped everywhere he goes, stating that former President Buhari is better than Tinubu, even as he added that Nigerians are not happy with the present administration.

Another man in the same video, urged the President to restore the old pump price of fuel, and stated that Nigerians should not be taken as fools.

Besides the height of dissatisfaction over Tinubu’s led government been expressed on social media platforms through skit making, virtually everyone in Nigeria across households, neighborhoods, churches, offices, and even while on transit in commercial vehicles, not a few Nigerians have become unanimous in their views that the ongoing government of President Tinubu is not doing better than former President Buhari’s administration as virtually everything worth buying and services worth subscribing to have become extremely pricey to not a few Nigerians, and unaffordable to some.

Given the performance dissonance that has no doubt characterized Tinubu’s led government that commenced on May 29, 2023, it is germane in this context to say that the trend of comparing an incumbent and preceding governments is captured in one word by lexicographers as “Declinism”.

According to lexicographers, “Declinism is a cognitive bias that views the present and future negatively in comparison to the past. It is rooted in the belief that the world is inevitably heading towards a worse state, and may be driven by factors such as pessimism, nostalgia, and exposure to negative news.

Declinism may not be just an opinion, but a mindset that can have negative consequences on a person’s mental and emotional well-being. People who view the world through a lens of declinism may become overly pessimistic and anxious, as well as feel hopeless about the future”.

At this juncture, it is expedient to urge the president to fulfil his promises of charting a critical and enduring path to the country’s economic recovery as it has become more compelling for people to compare his performance with that of former President Buhari’s 8 years woeful performance. To me, given Tinubu’s antecedent, particularly as the former governor of Lagos State, it sounds ridiculous for public opinion to compare him with Buhari, and scandalously ridiculous to reach the conclusion that Buhari performed better than him as a leader.

Nairaland / General / 60% Of Nigerians Lack Access To Electricity – FG. by Acechief: 10:59am On Dec 13, 2023
The Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, expressed concern about the inadequate state of Nigeria’s power sector.

He highlighted that around 60% of Nigerians lack access to electricity, emphasizing the government’s dissatisfaction with the situation.

Speaking at the Ministerial Retreat on the Integrated National Electricity Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan in Abuja, Edun criticized the underperformance of industry players since the privatization of the power sector a decade ago.

Expressing disappointment, Edun stressed the necessity for the government to turn to renewable energy as a solution for cleaner and more sustainable power to fuel economic growth.

He underscored the pivotal role of electricity in driving rapid and sustained economic development, especially in areas like industrialization and manufacturing.

Edun pointed out that the current administration considers power as a priority and a key component in its plan for economic growth.

Despite the disappointing outcome of the privatization exercise, he urged stakeholders to actively participate in finding solutions.

Additionally, Edun emphasized the importance of considering renewable energy options to address the persistent challenge of insufficient power supply.

The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, added that the country requires substantial investment in power, with only 14% of the anticipated $100 billion annual investment expected to come from the public sector.

“Our long-term plan, Agenda 2050, is a major plank to deliver our investment in power and only 14 per cent of the $100 billion per annum investment is expected to come from the public. So, we have a lot to do in order to meet Nigeria’s electricity needs.

“The National Integrated Infrastructure Masterplan is a significant work done in terms of power components and most of it was done by the Ministry of Budget and National Planning. He said”

Bagudu highlighted the significance of the National Integrated Infrastructure Masterplan, particularly its power components, as a crucial step in addressing Nigeria’s electricity needs.

Bagudu also mentioned ongoing efforts to engage with global investors and development partners, as part of the global gateway funding of $300 billion, with $150 billion allocated for Africa.

He noted the expectation to utilize the funds before the year 2030, emphasizing the collaborative efforts required to meet Nigeria’s electricity requirements.

Nairaland / General / National Lottery Trust Fund: A Corruption Ridden Agency. by Acechief: 10:42am On Dec 12, 2023
How one Bello Maigari, supposedly an educated Nigerian and possibly from one of the states of Nigeria was appointed as the executive secretary/chief executive of the National Lottery Trust Fund remains a mystery. If it is not a mystery, how did he qualify for such a plum position and survived the anti-corruption war of former president Buhari? Was there no searchlight zoomed on the operations of the Fund he proudly butchers? From his past managerial antecedents of the Fund, the man sounds in competent for the high profile job. He appears to be occupying the exalted position only to satisfy his personal interest and those of his family and friends. The Fund yearns for forensic auditing to unearth other hidden scandals with Maigari sent on compulsory suspension or dismissal to save the ailing agency from further financial catastrophe .

The National Lottery Trust Fund was established, positioned and fully funded by the federal government, to generate revenue, remit same to government pool for support to government’s laudable programmes of development.

But not satisfied with the funding of government, the Fund under Bello Maigari generated over N2.5billion from statutory remittances from licenses and permit holders in 2023 as well as N6.8billion it generated in 2022 from same source of generation but squandered by Maigari without remitting a dime to the federal government treasury for other developmental purposes.

Maigari was caught by nemesis before the House of Representatives Finance Committee penultimate Monday during the 2024-26 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper Interactive Session with Federal ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

His response to questions on the Fund’s activities was a bundle of disappointment and disgrace to educated Nigerians holding public office on trust. Disappointed to the point of provocation, the House Committee opted to place the Fund on Status Enquiry for squandering all its internally generated revenue without authority and against laid down rules and regulations.

Confidently, Maigari without a second thought told the House Committee that the generated revenues were expended on various critical sector interventions, including education, sports development, social services, public welfare and disaster management across Nigeria. This was the only story he could concoct and tell the committee to be further trusted.

Not satisfy with his folktale he was entertaining his audience with, Maigari revealed that the treasury of the Fund under his management was clean swept without a dime, and had a deficit of about N255billion in 2022 because of a carryover of liabilities in 2021.

Still living in a fool’s paradise and believing he was impressing, the committee with his bogus claims, Maigari arrogantly said the Fund was expected to pay emoluments, allowances, and benefits of members of its board, as well as salaries and allowances.

While acting his drama play before the committee, Maigari must have forgotten that it is the federal government that funds the Fund he manages. He failed to understand the fact that funds allocated to the Fund by the federal government are meant to address issues of salaries, allowances and other fringe benefits of board members etc.

Let the embattled Maigari tell Nigerians the naked truth on whether or not the Fund has a mandate of establishment to intervene in those critical sectors he claimed and the locations of the said interventions including costs involved. Was the National Lottery Trust Fund mandated to intervene in the education, sports development etc sectors? If yes, on whose authority did he squander over N2billion of the internally generated revenue? There may be many more to tell the story.

While President Tinubu is strategizing to launch a full scale war against corrupt practices, the likes of Bello Maigari are there supporting corrupt practices to flourish.

But for sure, a forensic auditing of the National Lottery Trust Fund will reveal volumes of other sharp corrupt practices bedeviling the federal government-owned agency that should be rescued from the likes of Maigari.

Dr. Tajudeen, speaking at the 3rd International conference of the Gender Policy Unit at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, emphasized the House’s dedication to addressing academic concerns, particularly the contentious issue of IPPIS. Addressing broader societal issues, the Speaker emphasized the imperative of combating poverty, gender inequality, and insecurity for the nation’s progress and prosperity.

Dr. Abbas received the Award of Excellence for his contributions to the fight against poverty, gender inequality, and insecurity at the conference.

Nairaland / General / Sanusi Lamido Seeks NNPC Audit, Says President Shouldn’t Be A Petroleum Minister by Acechief: 12:08pm On Dec 08, 2023
Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusei disclosed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) underwent a thorough audit, a move that ultimately led to his departure from the top bank.

Sanusi made this revelation during his address at the Bank Directors Summit held at Transcorp Hilton’s Congress Hall in Abuja.

Emphasizing the need for separation of roles, Sanusi asserted that the President should not simultaneously serve as the Minister of Petroleum during his tenure as CBN governor from June 2009 to February 2014.

He highlighted the importance of maintaining the independence of the apex bank from political influences to ensure its effectiveness.

Sanusi advocated for the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) to continue assisting the former CBN chief until banks collectively settle their outstanding debts to the system.

Addressing concerns about the banking industry’s public trust deficit, Sanusi urged for improvements to maintain the credibility of the apex bank.

He argued against amending the CBN Act, emphasizing the significance of upholding the institution’s autonomy.

Notably, three months into his presidency, in August, President Bola Tinubu restructured the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, appointing Heineken Lokpobiri as Minister of State and Gas Resources, and Ekperipe as Minister.

Sanusi is persistently emphasizing the importance of openness and responsibility in the financial sector as a central aspect of his endeavors to fortify the economic framework of Nigeria.

His continuous push for transparency underscores his commitment to bolstering the country’s financial stability and fostering a more robust economic environment.

Positions within petroleum ministries are typically assigned to individuals deemed trustworthy.

This practice is exemplified by the historical case of Former President Buhari, who, in his tenure, assumed the role of Petroleum Minister.

This choice reflects the inclination to entrust such crucial responsibilities to individuals perceived as reliable and dependable in overseeing matters related to the petroleum sector.

The precedent set by leaders like Former President Buhari underscores the significance placed on appointing individuals with a reputation for trustworthiness to key positions within these ministries.

Nairaland / General / Nigerian Woman Faces Trial For Allegedly Trafficking More Than 120 Children... by Acechief: 11:51am On Dec 08, 2023
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP) has revealed that they arrested a woman accused of selling over 120 children, and she is currently facing prosecution.

This disclosure was made during the appearance of Prof Fatima Waziri-Azi, the director-general of NAPTIP, before the Senate Committee on Special Duties.

Prof Fatima shared that the agency, in its two-decade existence, lacks a tracking machine.

She mentioned ongoing investigations into fake orphanages and individuals using forged documents to operate organizations involved in child trafficking.

According to her, young girls are often lured into situations resembling “baby-making machines,” where they are housed and exploited by multiple men.

NAPTIP, with 32 offices nationwide, is prosecuting cases related to child trafficking. However, it faces challenges in states like Kogi, Niger, and Bauchi where it doesn’t have offices.

Fatima highlighted the agency’s efforts in supporting victims by providing shelter, food, clothing, family tracing, and repatriation. She mentioned that over 20,200 victims have received support, with the highest number rescued in Benue.

The director-general emphasized the prevalence of human trafficking in states like Lagos, Katsina, Kano, and Abuja, with Benue having the highest number of rescued victims.

NAPTIP has achieved 639 convictions in two decades, and in 2021 alone, they received 1,232 human trafficking complaints.

Fatima underscored the challenges faced by the agency, relying on donors for funding. Despite existing for 20 years, NAPTIP lacks a tracking device and depends on Interpol and the Department of State Services (DSS) for tracking machines.

Addressing the issue of baby factories, Fatima revealed collaborative efforts with the Nigerian Army and Navy to combat this pervasive problem.

She cited instances in Anambra and Rivers State where joint operations were conducted, leading to arrests. The agency is currently prosecuting a woman accused of selling around 140 children in two years.

Fatima shared harrowing stories of victims, including a young boy named Daniel, whose identity was disputed by two families, necessitating a DNA test.

The agency also deals with cases involving fake orphanages and individuals deceiving prospective adopters.

Despite challenges, NAPTIP collaborates with various security forces to combat child trafficking, emphasizing the need for a collective effort against this crime.

Presenting the budget to the House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes, Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede stated that the 2024 proposed estimate of N76.486 billion represented a significant increase over 2023’s N49.901 billion budget owing to additional funds needed for overhead, personnel and capital costs.

“This increase is solely attributable to the increase in personnel cost from N36.834billion to N37.074billion in 2024, overhead cost from N10.535billion to 14.513billion in 2024 and capital cost from N2.531billion to N25.000billion in 2024,” he said.

Commenting on the 2023 budget performance, Olukoyede explained that the sum of N36.835billion was appropriated as the Commission’s personnel cost for the year, “out of this figure, the sum of N28.452billion representing 77% has been released for the payment of salary and allowances of staff on the Commission’s payroll between January and November 2023. He added that the “the sum of N7.024billion representing 67% of the N10.535 billion appropriated for the Commission for its overhead cost in 2023 has so far been released.”

The EFCC Chairman further stated that the Commission’s request for additional funds for overhead is due to high cost of air travel ticket, motor vehicle fuel cost, diesel cost and high cost of maintenance of buildings, operational vehicles and office equipment in the headquarters and fourteen Zonal Commands.

He appreciated the Committee’s support for the Commission in the discharge of its duties and the successes it is achieving in the fight against economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption.

Responding, Chairman, House Committee on Financial crimes, Ginger Obinna stated that financial crimes pose a significant threat to the stability and progress of any economy. “In recent years, our nation has witnessed a surge in sophisticated financial crimes that demand our immediate attention and robust defense mechanisms. From money laundering to cybercrimes, the challenges are multifaceted and ever-evolving.

“It is our duty to stay ahead of these threats, adapt our strategies and equip ourselves adequately to counteract the forces that seek to undermine our economic wellbeing and that of our nation.”

He stated that the budget’s defence and discussions on issues related to it was a reflection of the Committee’s commitment to creating an environment where citizens can trust the financial institutions that drive the economy and which will empower the EFCC to carry out its vital duty. “It is a pledge to provide the necessary resources to empower the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to carry out its vital mission effectively,” he said.

Nairaland / General / Police Confirm IED Near University Of Maiduguri Main Gate. by Acechief: 12:29pm On Dec 06, 2023
The Borno State Police Command reported a successful operation in defusing an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) discovered at the University of Maiduguri entrance on Monday. The Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident during an interview on Tuesday in Maiduguri.

According to Daso, around 9:00 a.m. on December 4, a suspicious device was observed near the main gate of the university.

The command promptly deployed the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team, which confirmed the device as a makeshift IED.

The Explosive Ordinance Department (EOD) then acted swiftly, successfully diffusing the IED without causing harm to individuals or property.

Following the operation, the command took measures to ensure the safety of the area, and an investigation has been initiated to identify the culprits and their motives.

Daso encouraged residents to report any suspicious objects or individuals to the nearest security personnel to prevent potential loss of lives and property.

Many residents in Maiduguri express strong opposition to the release of Boko Haram terrorists into society.

Their concern stems from the belief that many of these individuals served as informants for the terrorists.

This sentiment has intensified following last week’s announcement by the Borno State Government, revealing that approximately 160,000 Boko Haram terrorists have voluntarily surrendered their arms.

The implications of such a mass surrender pose a significant threat to the people of Borno State.

The fear among residents is that these individuals, previously associated with a terrorist organization, might still harbor allegiances or pose potential security risks.

The delicate balance between reintegration into society and ensuring the safety of the community is a matter of ongoing concern for both the residents and the government.

The Borno State Government’s decision to facilitate the reintegration of former Boko Haram members has sparked debates about the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs and the need for stringent security measures.

As the community grapples with the challenges of balancing compassion with security, the implications of these developments continue to be a topic of extensive discussion and concern among the residents of Maiduguri.

Nairaland / General / Killing Of Over 150 Muslims In Kaduna ‘more Than A Mistake’- Pantami. by Acechief: 12:17pm On Dec 06, 2023
Former Minister of Communication and Digital Economy Prof. Isa Pantami has on Monday 4th December 2023 expressed sadness over the Nigerian Army drone that accidentally killed dozens of Maulud celebrants in Dutun Biri, village Igabi LGA of Kaduna State.

While condoling with the families of those who lost their lives in the horrible explosion, Pantami condemned the act calling on the Tinubu led administration to do the needful and bring those behind the killing to justice.

He said that the killing of over 150 lives was more than a mistake adding that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice.

“Around 150 innocent civilians, including women, children, & others, were bombed to death by our own army of the Federal Government in Kaduna today. Our heartfelt condolences to their families. Those behind it are to be brought to justice, as injustice anywhere is a threat to justice”. Pantami stressed.

Recall that many villagers were feared dead following a bomb allegedly dropped by men of the Nigerian Armed Forces on Sunday 3rd of December 2023 killing over a hundred persons with several others severely injured.

Earlier, a statement by Samuel Aruwan, the Overseeing Commissioner, Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs of Kaduna state following a meeting chaired by the deputy governor, Hadiza Balarabe, attended by heads of security agencies, religious and traditional leaders, revealed that the Nigerian Army explained the circumstances which led to what it called “unfortunate and unintended”.

While calling for calm, the Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has ordered an immediate investigation into the tragic incident.

“I appeal to the affected community, and all citizens to keep calm and continue to support the security forces and the state government in our battle against terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and other criminal elements in Kaduna State. I am in consultation with the security forces to ensure that such mistakes are avoided in future operations”. The governor added.

Nairaland / General / Non-kinetic Approach To Insecurity In South East Is A Wise Option – Shettima. by Acechief: 11:19am On Dec 06, 2023
In addition to other initiatives already being implemented, Vice President Kashim Shettima has given his nod to the adoption of a non-kinetic approach to tackling insecurity in the South East region of the country.

The Vice President stated this on Tuesday when he received a delegation led by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, on a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa.

The delegation under the auspices of Peace In South East Project (PISE-P) visited the VP to present the initiative and invite him for the launch of the project that proposes a non-kinetic solution to the crisis in the South East region.

Speaking after a brief introduction of the new initiative, the Vice President endorsed the concept, noting that the “approach is the most beautiful I have seen so far.

“We need to build bridges, there is the need for a handshake, that way, those that have not been radicalized can be captured,” he added.

VP Shettima further explained the wisdom in adopting a non-kinetic approach in addressing the security situation in South East, saying it would save the region from endless war.

He stated: “Unless we want to engage in an endless war of attrition, a non-kinetic solution to the crisis in the South East must be explored and deployed. The most atrocious of wars are at the end of the day sorted out on the negotiation table.

“It is how you build bridges that will determine how far you go as a people and society. We have to reach out to the youths; we have to empower them. Once we empower them, the crisis, the agitation and insecurity will vanish”.

Earlier in his address, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Kalu, reiterated the call for a non-kinetic approach to addressing the security challenges facing the South East region.

“We understand that many zones in the country face similar security challenges,” he said. “However, PISE-P proposes a non-kinetic approach to address these issues that have impacted the economy of the South East and Nigeria,” he said.

He stressed the urgency of finding solutions, just as he said, “We cannot ignore these challenges; we must face them head-on. The current situation has severely affected our lives and our sense of unity.”

Kalu expressed optimism that the Peace in South East Project could bring hope to the region, similar to how other parts of the country have seen improvement.

He emphasized the need for new solutions, acknowledging that past approaches have not yielded the desired results.

Kalu highlighted the importance of addressing the sociological factors contributing to the unrest, expressing belief that a non-kinetic approach, focusing on changing the narrative and reorienting the minds of the people, can be more effective.

“We want to start a conversation that helps change the perception and mindset in the South East,” he explained, adding that “this cannot be achieved through guns and violence.”

The Deputy Speaker emphasized the need for initiatives that foster a sense of belonging and inclusion, even as he acknowledged the government’s limitations and stressed the importance of collaborating with development partners under the Peace in South East Project.

Members of the delegation included Hin. Leko Gambo, member representing Dass/Bogoro/Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency of Bauchi State; Hon. Jonathan Ajirioghene Ukodhiko, member representing Isoko North/South Federal Constituency of Delta State; Hon. Ibori-Suenu Erhiatake, member representing Ethiope East/Ethiope West Federal Constituency of Delta State; Hon. Bukar Talba, member representing the Monguno / Nganzai /Marte Federal Constituency of Borno State; Hon Emeka Wogu, former Minister of Labour and Productivity; Hon. Eight people were killed on Friday by unidentified gunmen who may have been Fulani militia members. The constant attacks on the populace were deemed disrespectful by the inhabitants.

The Indians are said to have found three more bodies yesterday while burying the earlier ones.

Johnson Musa, a villager who fled to Jos yesterday in search of protection, claimed he saw the gunmen arrive in large numbers and start killing people without cause.

Along with stealing one Bajaj motorcycle and injuring other persons, the attackers also took 120 sheep.

In an interview with The Guardian, Jerry Datim, the coordinator of Human Rights Watch and Rescue Operations in the Plateau, blamed the attack on the Fulani.

He commended Maj-Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army’s 3 Division in Jos, for his partial success in lowering crime rates in the region.

Datim urged people to speak up if they were unhappy about the senseless deaths.

The trade surplus increased by 47% quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) to N1.89 trillion from N1.28 trillion reported in the second quarter (Q2), marking a slight improvement for Nigeria’s external sector in the third quarter (Q3).

Crude accounted for N8.5 trillion, or 82.5 percent, of the nation’s total exports, as was to be expected. The value of non-crude oil exports was N1.8 trillion, or 17.5% of total exports, of which N677.56 billion, or 6.6%, came from non-oil items.

Nigeria’s overall merchandise trade was estimated by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) to be N18.804 trillion in its quarterly report on international trade in goods.

NBS reports that the value shows a 54.62 percent increase over the amount recorded in Q2 and a 53.16 percent increase over the value recorded in Q3 of the previous year.

With a value of N10.35 trillion, total exports accounted for 55.02 percent of all commerce in the reviewed quarter, up 60.78 percent and 74.36 percent, respectively, from the value recorded in the corresponding and preceding quarters.

Conversely, 45 percent of trade was made up of imports, which were valued at N8.46 trillion. The statistic shows an increase over the N5.73 trillion and N6.34 trillion recorded in the previous and corresponding quarters of 47.7% and 33.33 percent, respectively.

“A favorable trade balance was indicated by the Q3 2023 merchandise trade balance of ₦1.888 trillion. A notable increase in trade operations during the period was a major contributing factor to the third quarter of 2023’s export and import increases relative to the comparable and preceding quarters, the report stated.

It revealed that, for Q3, the value of re-exports was N35.95 billion, or 0.35 percent of all exports.

The top five countries for re-export were South Korea, Ghana, Gabon, Ivory Coast, and Cameroon.

Nairaland / General / Nigerian Troops Apprehend Three Soldiers Involved In Ammunition Theft by Acechief: 12:03pm On Dec 04, 2023
Troops participating in “Operation Desert Sanity” in Maiduguri, Borno State, reportedly apprehended three soldiers on allegations of stealing ammunition in the state. The soldiers were taken into custody during a covert operation conducted at motor parks along Njimtilo road in Maiduguri.

According to a source, the incident occurred on December 2, 2023, when the troops engaged in covert operations at motor parks and along Njimtilo Road at Njimtilo. During this operation, three soldiers were apprehended.

One of them, who was on his way to Makurdi, was found in possession of 250 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition.

Another soldier, also en route to Makurdi, was arrested with four fully loaded magazines and 110 rounds of ammunition concealed ingeniously in a “Mudu” (a traditional measurement plate) of rice.

The third soldier, headed for Abuja, was detained with 14 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. All suspects are currently in custody pending further investigation.

Efforts to obtain a statement from Maj-Gen. Buba Edward, the Director of Defence Media Operations, were unsuccessful, as calls to his mobile phone went unanswered, and messages sent for an official statement remained unresponded to as of the time of this press release.

The military authorities are likely to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft of ammunition by the arrested soldiers.

The Nigerian Army recently apprehended a number of soldiers who were allegedly engaged in the illicit activity of selling ammunition to both Bandits and Boko Haram terrorists within the state.

This significant development came to light as part of the military’s ongoing efforts to curb unauthorized weapon transactions and enhance national security.

The arrests were made following thorough investigations into suspected involvement in the illegal arms trade.

These soldiers, entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding the nation, are now under scrutiny for their alleged connections with groups known for perpetrating violence and terrorism.

This revelation underscores the challenges faced by security forces in tackling internal threats and maintaining the integrity of their ranks.

The Nigerian Army, committed to addressing such internal security lapses, is expected to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding these soldiers’ alleged collaboration with bandits and terrorists.

It remains crucial for the military to maintain public trust and uphold its duty to protect citizens from threats posed by insurgency and criminal activities.

The arrested soldiers will likely undergo a thorough legal process to determine their level of involvement, and if found guilty, appropriate legal actions will be taken to ensure accountability.

Nairaland / General / What Governmental Structure Suits A Country Like Nigeria Best? by Acechief: 9:58am On Dec 01, 2023
Determining the best form of government for a nation like Nigeria is a complex and multifaceted issue that depends on various factors, including the country’s historical context, cultural values, socioeconomic conditions, and political aspirations. However, some general considerations can be explored to assess the suitability of different governance models for Nigeria.

1. Democracy: Democracy, a system characterized by popular sovereignty, embodies the principles of political participation, representation, and accountability. It offers a framework for empowering citizens to make decisions that affect their lives, fostering inclusivity, and promoting fundamental rights. Democracy’s emphasis on transparency and checks and balances can help mitigate corruption and safeguard against the abuse of power, which have been significant challenges in Nigeria’s past.

2. Federalism: Federalism, a system of sharing power between a central government and regional or state governments, can be particularly well-suited for a diverse and populous country like Nigeria. It allows for greater autonomy and responsiveness to local needs, while maintaining a national framework for unity and coordination. Federalism can accommodate Nigeria’s ethnic and cultural diversity, promoting a sense of belonging and addressing regional disparities.

3. Strong Institutions: Regardless of the specific form of government, the strength and legitimacy of institutions are crucial for effective governance. An independent judiciary, a professional civil service, and a responsible media play essential roles in upholding the rule of law, ensuring accountability, and promoting transparency. Investing in institutional capacity building is paramount for Nigeria’s long-term stability and progress.

4. Inclusive and Participatory Governance: Effective governance in Nigeria requires active and meaningful participation from its citizens. This includes expanding political participation beyond the electoral process, fostering civic engagement, and ensuring the representation of diverse voices in the decision-making process. Empowering grassroots organizations and civil society can further strengthen participatory democracy and address the needs of marginalized communities.

5. Economic Development and Poverty Reduction: Addressing poverty and promoting economic development are fundamental to Nigeria’s political stability and social progress. A government that prioritizes sustainable economic growth, equitable resource distribution, and job creation can address the root causes of many societal challenges, foster inclusive development, and reduce inequalities.

6. Addressing Corruption: Corruption remains a significant obstacle to good governance and inclusive development in Nigeria. A government committed to combating corruption must strengthen anti-corruption institutions, promote transparency, and enforce accountability measures. Public education and awareness campaigns can also play a role in fostering a culture of integrity and ethical conduct.

7. Reconciliation and National Unity: Nigeria’s history of ethnic and religious conflicts highlights the importance of reconciliation and national unity. A government that promotes inclusive dialogue, fosters mutual understanding, and addresses historical grievances can contribute to a more cohesive and peaceful society.

8. Effective Security and Rule of Law: Ensuring security and upholding the rule of law are essential for maintaining order, protecting citizens, and fostering a conducive environment for economic and social development. A government that effectively addresses security challenges, strengthens law enforcement institutions, and promotes respect for the rule of law can create a more stable and just society.

9. Investing in Human Development: Investing in human development, including education, healthcare, and social safety nets, is crucial for improving the well-being of Nigerians and fostering long-term economic prosperity. A government that prioritizes human capital development can empower citizens to reach their full potential and contribute to the nation’s progress.

10. Adapting to Global Challenges: In today’s interconnected world, governments must be adaptable and responsive to global challenges, including climate change, technological advancements, and emerging threats. A government that embraces innovation, collaborates with other nations, and addresses global issues can secure Nigeria’s future and promote sustainable development.

In conclusion, determining the best form of government for Nigeria is an ongoing process that requires continual evaluation and adaptation. While democracy and federalism offer promising frameworks, their success hinges on the strength of institutions, inclusive participation, and effective governance. Addressing corruption, promoting economic development, fostering reconciliation, ensuring security, investing in human capital, and adapting to global challenges are essential components of building a stable, prosperous, and just society for all Nigerians.

While describing the incident as barbaric and unprofessional, the forum called on the authorities of the Nigerian Police Force to swiftly arrest and prosecute the officer for manslaughter and incitement of public unrest.

As of the time of filing in this report, nothing has been heard from the Nigerian Police in the area in response to the incident involving the accused who is reportedly at large.

Nairaland / General / Tinubu Authorizes Annual Recruitment Of 30,000 Policemen. by Acechief: 10:43am On Nov 30, 2023
The Inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, shared that President Bola Tinubu has given approval for the annual recruitment of 30,000 policemen, during his recent visit to Adamawa State. This decision triples the previous yearly recruitment of 10,000 officers sanctioned by the former President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

Egbetokun addressed the prevalent issue of police officers being overworked, expressing optimism that this new approval would alleviate the burden. He acknowledged that currently, one policeman often takes on the responsibilities of two to three officers, leading to increased stress and fatigue.

Reflecting on the evolution of police work schedules, Egbetokun highlighted that initially, there were three shifts—morning, afternoon, and night.

However, over the years, it condensed to two shifts, morning and night, and in some instances, officers were required to work continuously for 24 hours.

Drawing from personal experiences as an area commander in Osogbo, he recounted instances where officers had to work round the clock for an entire week, transitioning between morning and night duties.

“When I was area commander in Osogbo, I have policemen who worked round the clock for a whole week, because as they are closing from morning duty, they are resuming night duty and vice versa.

Egbetokun acknowledged the public’s tendency to film and criticize officers caught sleeping in public due to such demanding schedules.

Upon assuming the role of Inspector General of Police, Egbetokun prioritized addressing the manpower shortage.

He successfully obtained President Tinubu’s approval for the recruitment of 30,000 officers annually over the next four years, aiming to resolve the longstanding issue of inadequate manpower within the police force.

Egbetokun also disclosed plans to introduce awards for gallantry, emphasizing that such recognition would be the criteria for special promotions.

Additionally, he underscored a shift towards merit-based promotions across all cadres within the police force, signaling a commitment to rewarding excellence and dedication.

Nairaland / General / ECOWAS Court Issues Ruling Mandating Adjustments To Nigerian Press Council. by Acechief: 11:14am On Nov 27, 2023
The ECOWAS Court of Justice recently directed the Nigerian government to modify specific parts of the 1992 Nigerian Press Council Act to align with global standards supporting free, diverse, and professional journalism.

This decision came after two Nigerian journalists filed a lawsuit, alleging that the government violated their freedom of expression rights by imposing restrictive conditions for journalism practice.

The journalists argued that the 1992 Nigerian Press Council Act unfairly discriminated against online and citizen journalists, failing to acknowledge the significance of public interest media.

The ECOWAS Court, through Hon Justice Dupe Atoki, the Judge Rapporteur, ruled in favor of the journalists, stating that Sections 19 (1)(a), 27, and 37 of the Nigerian Press Council (NPC) Act did not recognize public interest media, including the rights of online and citizen journalists.

This, according to the Court, violated Article 9 (1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), as well as Article 8 (1) and 10 (2) of the Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression in Africa.

However, not all claims made by the journalists were upheld by the Court. Some allegations, such as unlawful arrest and detention, were dismissed due to lack of substantiation.

Despite the journalists’ request for one million USD in damages, the Court did not grant this appeal.

This legal matter, identified by the suit number ECW/CCJ/APP/31/21, was initiated on June 14, 2021, by lawyers representing the applicants, Mr. Isaac Olamikan and Mrs.

Edoghogho Ugberease, who are online and citizen journalists advocating for freedom of expression, opinion, and access to information.

They contended that the specified sections of the Nigeria Press Council Act of 1992, which mandated journalists to be at least 18 years old and accredited by the NPC, discriminated against them.

Additionally, they argued that the requirement of 25 years of age to be an editor, along with the necessity of working experience in a reputable media organization or news agency and registration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists, posed further discriminatory challenges.

Nairaland / General / Federal Government Promises Dip In Cooking Gas Prices Within A Week. by Acechief: 10:54am On Nov 27, 2023
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ekperikpe Ekpo, has expressed concerns over the increasing prices of cooking gas across many states in the country.

The minister, reacting to issues affecting the sector, including supply and the pricing of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in the domestic market, assured the public of the Ministry’s readiness to address the issue.

During a meeting held at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, tagged ‘Nigerian Midstream Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA),’ top officials of Chevron Nigeria Limited were in attendance to discuss the crises negatively impacting the increased prices of LPG.

A committee, chaired by the NMDPRA boss, has been mandated to develop recommendations within one week on how to increase supplies and reduce LPG prices. According to a statement by Ekpo’s media aide, Louis Ibah, the price increase in LPG per kilogram from about N700 to well above N900 across many states in recent months has necessitated the intervention of key stakeholders in the sector. The statement added that factors such as FX sourcing for imports and insufficient supply to the domestic market by producers have been identified as major contributors to the increase in the price of LPG.

Nairaland / General / The Financial Toll Of Serving Nigeria: A Crippling Reality. by Acechief: 10:44am On Nov 27, 2023
Predictably, the Nigerian Army has debunked allegations that one of its own, Captain Alphonsus Bazza, took his life. This denouncement is despite overwhelming evidence that the overwhelmed officer took his life in Uyo,Akwa Ibom State.

In the face of Nigeria’s unrelenting man-made challenges, it has become ever more difficult to serve the country. In fact, in many instances, to serve Nigeria is to sign a death warrant, very much like rushing into battle unprepared.

In 2009, Boko Haram, which has since proven itself to be the Nigerian nemesis, regrouped and escalated their attacks on the Nigerian state. The relentless attacks soon savagely exposed the weak underbelly of the Nigerian state.

If some sanity has returned to Borno State, the epicenter of Boko Haram’s incipient attacks, it is because the group has since splintered, birthing many other terror groups which have moved their operations to neighboring states.

At the front line of the response to Nigeria’s grave security challenges have been security personnel led by the Nigerian army. But the toll has been heartbreaking to put it mildly.

As young soldiers have fallen in defence of their country, leaving behind young widows, young children and aged parents, allegations have swirled about the poor welfare of those whose last-ditch efforts have kept Nigerians from the jaws of terrorists.

There have been allegations of poor pay, poor mental healthcare and generally poor welfare. The self-sabotage of a country that deliberately chooses to snap into battle with its best men poorly motivated has been all too apparent for Nigerians to see.

There have been some startling defeats. Each was to be expected, especially amidst swirling allegations that the soldiers who lead the charge to keep the country out of the hands of terrorists are so poorly funded that they do not have the right equipment to fight.

Indeed, in 2016, Sambo Dasuki a former National Security Adviser, was arraigned alongside others for diverting a staggering sum of 23.5 billion Naira meant for the purchase of arms. That the trial has proceeded at a snail speed since then speaks to priorities in Nigeria.

It is a catastrophic miscalculation that bothers on the calamitous that those expected to fight tooth and nail are not armed to the teeth to prosecute such a critical war.

It is also important to state that failure has been recorded on multiple levels with the CDS recently lamenting that the propensity of the judiciary to grant suspected terrorists bail was putting the lives of soldiers at risk.

The Nigerian army is a highly regimented organization where to speak up is to risk severe punishment. Yet, if the soldiers who are at the risk of breaking down cannot speak up for fear of punishment, Nigerians should be able to do that. This is a commitment Nigerians owe them, and it is important to take this commitment very seriously.

Nigeria may be in a war situation, even if it is not the kind of full-fledged war Israel is engaged with Palestine, but a war nonetheless where the welfare of those who prosecute the war is directly linked to the results of the war.

The dysfunction lodged deep in Nigeria’s system is marked by the scalps it continues to claim. There is the long list of young people for whom the sun sets even before it truly rises.

There is the catalogue of broken dreams and shattered hopes that many young people nurse in the country. Many are able to nurse their pain quietly, licking their wounds and having the occasional cry while calling on the resilience and fortitude that Nigerians have become synonymous with.

Many others, like Captain Bazza get sucked in, dragged into the depths of despair by the endless despondency of serving a country that often give so little in return or exchange.

There can be no doubt about it: a country that is demanding so much and exacting an excruciating cost from those who serve it must be able to do much more for them.

In terms of what it gives back, Nigeria must be ready to give back to honest people who honestly serve the country. In the same way, it must be ready to keep the resources of the country away from the plunder of the corrupt and the corruptly rich.

But this desirable state of affairs will remain a mirage for as long as Nigeria remains on the perilous path of eating up those who work the hardest to ensure it is not eaten up.

Nairaland / General / Between Ifeanyi Ubah’s Defection And The Wealth Of Ndigbo. by Acechief: 10:59am On Oct 24, 2023
Defection by politicians from one political party to another has become a common feature in Nigeria’s political landscape since the beginning of the 4th Republic. It gained so much traction that it was a source of worry for parties who lose their heavyweights to rival parties just at the drop of a hat.

To curb this rather unpleasant political phenomenon fueled mostly by greed and driven by personal interests as against the interest of the people, the national assembly took the bull by the horn by passing a law that gave some conditions that must be passed before a defection could be recognised in law all in an attempt to curb the unwholesome development.

This has however not stopped politicians from defecting to other parties at random especially as elections approach; the embrace of what they perceive to be the best party through which they can achieve their parochial ambitions just keeps driving them even if the new party bears every contradiction to their own personal philosophies, beliefs and political ideologies. And no matter how they try to paper it, the ambition is almost always the same: personal and parochial!

A performance poet, Dike Chukwumerije, once captured the scenario most aptly in one of his Facebook posts when he wrote:

“None of the defections was in protest of the many things that are going wrong in the present administration.

“Nobody decamped for Leah Sharibu. Nobody decamped for Anka or Rabbah or the blood that flowed in Gwer East.

“Nobody decamped for the illegal detention of Zakzaky, for the illegal retention of Dasuki, for the outright disappearance of Kanu.

“Nobody decamped for the jobs that have still not been created, or the power that can still not be distributed.

“Nobody decamped for the brothers we lost to hospitals we cannot depend on
For the mothers we lost in labour to derelict wards and empty medicine cupboards.

“Nobody decamped for the unpaid pensioner and the soldier stuck on permanent rotation in Gwoza
For the teachers who work for months without pay and the litigant that cannot afford the cost of Justice.

“Nobody decamped for the children who beg to clean our windshields… See? Nobody decamped for them,” Chukwumerije wrote.

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah is the latest to be caught in the web of defections afflicting our political space.

The astute politician, oil magnate and consummate industrialist is one man who has the drive to succeed in whatever he sets his heart to do. His love for the Igbo, his race, is incontrovertible and unflawed. He has demonstrated his unbridled commitment to the Igbo cause in several ways more than many Igbo billionaires in his class have done.

Beyond words, the Nnewi-born Senator has committed enormous resources for the advancement of the Igbo cause. And no one can even argue that. He not only talks Igbo, he walks Igbo, eats Igbo and breathes Igbo. Ifeanyi Ubah’s Igbo-centrism is too obvious and copious to be debated.

For example, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah sponsored almost singlehanded several initiatives for the progress of the Igbo race worldwide. Such initiatives include a grand convergence of both Igbo and Yoruba leaders and elders on The Base Event Centre, Independence Layout, Enugu for an event themed “A Celebration of Igbo/Yoruba Friendship Beyond Brotherhood” under the auspices of Nzuko Umunna, a leading Igbo sociocultural organization, which held on January 11, 2018.

The initiative was for the widening of space for the collaboration of the two major ethnic groups for the joint advancement of the sociopolitical and economic progress of their peoples.

A similar initiative which he sponsored almost singlehanded was the one organized by Igbo Bu Igbo (IBI), another foremost Igbo sociocultural organization, at Oakland Hotel, Enugu on December 1, 2018 with leaders of the region generously gracing the occasion. The IBI event was themed “Ndi Igbo Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”. The two events gulped millions of naira and were bankrolled almost singlehanded by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah without batting an eyelid.

Also, Igbo Bu Igbo (IBI) which Senator Ifeanyi Ubah is its Board of Trustees’ Chairman bankrolled “A Blueprint for Alaigbo Development”, a product of painstaking processes and brainstorming sessions by a think-tank team of Igbo leaders, elders, industrialists, diplomats, technocrats etc. The well-thought-out blueprint is still available at the secretariat of the organization for any serious political leader in Igboland to tap into for the development of the region.

Ifeanyi Ubah is also a go-getter. Emerging a Senator of the Federal Republic under the umbrella of one of the least known parties in Nigeria, defeating candidates of the more popular and bigger political parties like the PDP, APC and APGA, is no mean feat and can only be a result of unalloyed commitment to a cause.

But, like everyone, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah also has his weaknesses and moments of gaffes, one of which was his comments after his recent defection from the YPP to the APC.

While speaking shortly after the defection, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah had said:

“I want to be sincere, it has always been difficult for the Igbo people to key into the national party because of our sentiments and emotions.

“Since our president has emerged and I put that challenge to each Igbo man today in Nigeria, 70 percent – 80 percent of them derive their wealth from the legacy that the president has left in Lagos.”

That’s one gaffe that’s capable of pushing into irredeemable obscurity all that Senator Ifeanyi Ubah stands for and has done for the Igbo nation.

How can anyone attribute the wealth of 70 – 80 per cent of Igbo people to one man, simply because the man was Governor of Lagos State from 1999 – 2007? Did the globally acknowledged Igbo nation start producing billionaires in 1999? Ifeanyi Ubah, as widely travelled as he is, knows full well that the making of wealth by the Igbos transcends persons and places, not to talk of someone of the recent era.

It is disheartening that a man of his status would, for whatever reason, make such a declaration, thereby downgrading the sterling entrepreneurial capacity and capabilities of a whole nation, his own people. It is even more worrisome that the declaration was politically motivated. It was placing logic and history on their head and a futile attempt to subjugate and sacrifice the principles of hardwork, intelligence, audacity in taking business risks and daring to tread where others dread with which Ndigbo are renowned for universally on the altar of his own political ambition.

That is not an act any Igbo man or woman would take lightly. Ubah cannot throw the people under the bus just for him to appear politically correct.

Ndigbo did not start being billionaires in 1999 when President Tinubu started holding sway in Lagos as governor. The people have been producing billionaires out of a dink of hardwork, academic excellence, business acumen, scientific and technological inventions and entrepreneurial innovations both at home and abroad. Just as their wealth, they are everywhere in the world working smartly and sustaining their reputation as one of the most diligent races of the world. To cocoon them and their prosperity to the tiny enclave of “Tinubu’s legacies” is not only a joke taken too far but is an assertion that is both misleading and mischievous.

No doubt, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah has what it takes to continue to contribute his own quota to the relentless rising of the sociopolitical fortunes of Ndigbo in Nigeria and abroad as he has demonstrated in the past, and Anambra will be very lucky to have such a go-getter as Governor. He should however go about the pursuit of his ambitions with the highest level of decorum without dragging the collective destiny of Ndigbo into the mud by tying our prosperity to the apron string of any one man.
