In a thrilling culmination to the 2025 World English-Language Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC), held from November 12-16 in Accra, Ghana, Team Nigeria has surged to the No. 1 position in the Best Country Award standings, reclaiming the crown from the United States after their narrow 2023 victory. This marks a dominant performance by the African powerhouse, solidifying their legacy as Scrabble's reigning force on the global stage with the new president, Engr Bright Idahosa. Key Highlights from the Championship: - **Team Performance**: Nigeria's "Green Locusts" delegation—known for their rigorous preparation and unyielding strategy—led the field after a dramatic Day 2, with multiple players cracking the top ranks. By Day 3, they maintained a commanding presence, outpacing rivals through superior average placements in the top half of the leaderboard. The Best Country Award, which rewards collective excellence, was Nigeria's to lose, and they sealed it with precision, echoing their historic 2015 sweep when Wellington Jighere claimed both individual and national titles. - **Standout Players**: - **Timi Woko**: The clinical powerhouse started atop the leaderboard with 13 wins on Day 2, briefly slipped to 3rd by Day 3 (17 wins, +1787 point spread), but his artillery-like racks kept Nigeria's momentum alive. - **Oluwatimilehin Doko**: The continental champion and UNILAG pharmacy student held 10th overall, a quiet storm ready to erupt. - **Other Eagles**: George Ezinore (4th), Godwin Victor (8th), Rex Ogbakpa (10th), Chinedu Thorpe (16th), Emmanuel Umujose (22nd), Samuel Adebola (24th), Ojior Osikhena (25th), and Dipo Akanbi (26th) formed a formidable wall, ensuring depth that the USA couldn't match. - **Side Event Glory**: Cyril Umebiye dominated the Sika/Gold Challenge with a 19-4 record, adding a gold medal to Nigeria's haul. - **The Dethroning Drama**: The USA, fresh off their 2023 edge, entered as favorites but faltered against Africa's rising tide. Kenya (with Willy Mwangi and Richard Okechi in the top 20) and hosts Ghana mounted strong challenges, Ghana "stalking" with ferocious home-soil energy—but Nigeria's efficiency in steady boards, tight defenses, and high-scoring plays proved decisive. As one report put it, this was "international warfare with dictionaries," and Nigeria emerged unscathed. The event, featuring categories like the Akwaaba and Sika Gold Challenges alongside the main WESPAC, drew elite players from over 130 nations, testing linguistic firepower, mental stamina, and composure. Nigeria's triumph isn't just points on a board, it's pride, legacy, and a reminder that Africa's heartbeat nation reigns supreme in wordplay. 🔥 Nigeria's Scrabble squad is LOCKED for WESPAC 2025! Pres Bright Idahosa's vision: 100 school clubs by '26. Tag a scrabble wizard! 📍 Ghana, Nov 12 In the high-stakes arena where letters clash like gladiators and every tile placement can spell triumph or defeat, Nigeria stands unchallenged as the undisputed king of Scrabble. For over three decades, the Green Nation has dominated the global board, from Wellington Jighere's iconic 2015 World Championship victory to a gritty silver medal finish in Las Vegas last year—despite a depleted squad. Now, with fresh leadership and a razor-sharp 15-player team, the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) is poised to reclaim the crown at the 2025 World English Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC) in Accra, Ghana, kicking off November 12. Enter Bright Idahosa, the newly elected NSF President, whose October 2025 ascension has injected electric energy into the federation. A lifelong Scrabble evangelist from Edo State—previously serving as Vice President and a key organizer behind events like the Champion of Champions tournament—Idahosa isn't just a player; he's a visionary architect of the game. "We're not just playing words; we're building legacies," Idahosa declared during the team's fiery send-off in Lagos. Under his helm, the NSF board has welcomed heavyweights like Engineer Gbenga Ojofeitimi, a two-decade sponsor whose financial and moral backing has fueled Nigeria's continental reign, and technical maestro Khaleel Adedeji, who lit the spark at camp with a rallying cry: "Show up ready, hungry, and united—WESPAC mode activated!" The Lagos camp, buzzing since early November, has been a crucible of strategy and stamina. Fifteen elite wordslingers—ranging from grizzled veterans to rising phenoms—have drilled through mock battles, honing bingos like "ORIENTA" and dissecting triple-word scores. Leading the pack is George Ezinore, the Edo State sensation who clinched the prestigious Asaph Zadok National Championship in April 2025, earning the coveted NSF Green Jacket as Nigeria's undisputed "King of Scrabble." Ezinore's victory in Benin City—a three-day showdown drawing top talent from every state—capped a festival where Ogun State snagged the team crown, underscoring the federation's grassroots depth. "I've chased this jacket for years; now, it's fuel for Ghana," Ezinore shared, his eyes gleaming with the fire of unfinished business. At 60, Chinedu Okwelogu (aka "Sidespin" or Chinedu Thorpe) embodies the timeless grit of Nigerian Scrabble. Selected for his tactical wizardry, Okwelogu eyes a historic feat: becoming one of the event's elder statesmen to podium on the world stage. Joined by stars like Oluwatimilehin Doko (the 15th African Champion) and a mix of licensed pros from Lagos to Abuja, the squad departs for Accra on Sunday, November 10—two days ahead of the main event. With over 30 nations converging at the Alisa Hotel, the stakes couldn't be higher: 32 preliminary games, a best-of-seven final on November 16, and side events like the Akwaaba Early Bird Challenge promising side-splitting drama. But Idahosa's blueprint stretches beyond the board. His 100-day vision? Launch 100 new school clubs by 2026, boost female participation to 50%, and pioneer a live-streamed NSF league on Twitch and YouTube. "Every child a champion, every club a community," he vows, echoing Nigeria's Scrabble ethos: intellect as equalizer, words as weapons against inequality. Sponsors like Sterling Bank and 9mobile are already circling, drawn to a sport that reaches 500,000 monthly engagements with zero ad spend. As Team Nigeria touches down in Ghana—host of the recent African Games Scrabble demo—the world watches. Will Ezinore defend his national throne on the global stage? Can Okwelogu's veteran guile outfox the field? One thing's certain: With Idahosa at the helm, Nigeria isn't just competing—they're conquering. I recently visited a rural village, surrounded by lush greenery and teeming with wildlife. The trip was enlightening, but I returned with some unexpected souvenirs - insect bites. Among them was a peculiar bite that would change my understanding of traditional remedies. The bite, which I later learned was from an Eka (jigger flea), resembled a maggot-like insect burrowing into my skin. The itching was intense, and I sought relief from local healers. They introduced me to red oil, a natural remedy that would force the Eka out. Applying Red Oil I applied the red oil to the affected area, and within minutes, the Eka began to emerge. It was a tiny, flea-like insect with a distinctive body. I was amazed by the effectiveness of this traditional remedy. What is Eka (Jigger Flea)? Eka, also known as the jigger flea (Tunga penetrans), is a parasitic insect that burrows into human skin, causing discomfort and infection. Its botanical name is Tunga penetrans, and it belongs to the family Hectopsyllidae. Traditional Remedy - Red Oil Red oil, extracted from palm nuts, is a natural remedy used to repel Eka. Its potency attracts the insect, forcing it out of the skin. This traditional method has been used for centuries, offering a non-toxic and effective solution. Other Information When a Jigger flea (Tunga penetrans) bites and burrows into the skin, the person may experience several symptoms, including: 1. Severe itching and discomfort at the bite site 2. Redness and swelling around the bite area 3. A small, raised bump or blister, often with a central black dot (the flea's abdomen) 4. Pain or tenderness when pressure is applied to the bite area 5. Inflammation, which can lead to secondary infections if left untreated 6. Swollen lymph nodes in severe cases 7. Fever or chills in rare cases If the flea is not removed, it can lead to more severe complications, such as: 1. Abscesses or pus-filled sores 2. Cellulitis (bacterial skin infection) 3. Lymphangitis (inflammation of the lymphatic vessels) 4. Tetanus or other bacterial infections It's essential to remove the flea promptly and properly to prevent these complications. Applying red oil or other substances can help coax the flea out of the skin, and then it can be carefully removed with tweezers or a needle. Keeping the area clean and applying topical antibiotics can help prevent infection. If you suspect a Jigger flea infestation, consult a healthcare professional for proper treatment. I'm grateful for the unexpected encounter with Eka, which led me to discover the power of red oil and traditional remedies. This experience has broadened my understanding of natural solutions and their effectiveness in combating parasitic insects. Let me know if you have experience it too !
