PoliticsSenate Asks FG To Suspend 5G Network Deployment by adebuk47(op): 2:37pm On May 05, 2020
The Senate on Tuesday asked the Federal Government to suspend the planned deployment of the Fifth Generation Network in Nigeria.

The red chamber stated this after the deliberation on a motion by Senator Uche Ekwunife, drawing the attention of the senators to the status of the 5G network in the country.

Ekwunife said her motion was borne out of the need to assure Nigerians of their safety by asking the Federal Government to postpone the launch until a proper investigation was carried out.

The Deputy Majority Leader, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, said the 5G network deployment remained a controversial issue.

He said the experts should be allowed to handle it and deliberate on the merits and demerits of its deployment.

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele said it would be irresponsible of any government to subscribe to a technology that won’t be safe for its citizens.

He noted that no scientific research has been done by any agency of the Federal Government on the 5G network.

He said countries in Europe were already investigating the implications of the deployment and wondered why Nigeria had yet to do so.

The Senate therefore asked its committees on Communication, Science, Technology and ICT, and that of Health to conduct a thorough investigation with a view to determining the status of the 5G network in the country.

In the interim, the red chamber asked the relevant federal agency supervising the ICT operations in the country to suspend the 5G deployment until a thorough probe to determine its suitability for human health had been achieved.

The joint committees were asked to submit its report within four weeks.

Health13 Ghanaian Doctors Test Positive For COVID-19 by adebuk47(op): 2:28pm On Apr 28, 2020
At least 13 doctors have tested positive for coronavirus in Ghana, an official of the Ghana Medical Association said on Tuesday.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the GMA, Paa Baidoo, disclosed this to the media in Accra.

Baidoo blamed the development on the poor distribution of Personal Protective Equipment to health facilities across the country in the fight against COVID-19.

“The virus affects virtually everybody, with no respect for the rich, poor, educated, or non-educated, including our healthcare professionals; nurses, pharmacists, and administrators,” he said.

Although there are other risks of exposure, he said medical professionals faced an all-time high challenge of inadequate PPE due to an improper mode of distribution.

He said that this endangered the lives of healthcare workers.

As of Tuesday, the Ashanti region has 69 cases, the second-highest number of people infected in a region by COVID-19 in the country.

HealthBREAKING: 40-year-old COVID-19 Patient Gives Birth At LUTH by adebuk47(op): 5:31pm On Apr 27, 2020
The management of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, has announced the delivery of a baby girl by a COVID-19 patient.

The hospital via its twitter handle, @LUTHoffical, said the delivery took place on Monday afternoon.

“A team of LUTH doctors, anesthetists, and nurses delivered a woman with COVID-19 of a baby girl this afternoon. The 40-year-old mother gave birth to a 3.3kg baby. Our gratitude goes to these gallant men and women and all warriors making the nation proud in the face of this scourge,” the hospital tweeted.

The Chairman Medical Advisory Committee of the hospital, Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, told our correspondent that the newborn was doing well but her sample would be taken for a test soon.

“The chance of the baby being COVID-19 is unlikely but we have to take her sample for testing, but she is doing well. The baby is going to be with her mother in a separate ward and room in our isolation centre,” he said.

Nancy Pelosi has endorsed Joe Biden for US president in a video statement released Monday.

“Today I am proud to endorse Joe Biden for president of the United States because he will be an extraordinary president,” the speaker of the House of Representatives said in the pre-recorded message.

Pelosi was the last leading Democrat to endorse formally Biden’s run for the White House against Republican Donald Trump in November.

Biden, who served as vice president under former President Barack Obama, had already emerged as the Democrats’ presumptive nominee after decisive primary victories in a string of primaries before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down much of the country.

His main rivals, including Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, have dropped out of the race and endorsed Biden as has Obama.

In her statement, Pelosi lauded the former senator from Delaware as a man of “empathy, grace and courage” and “a leader with the humility to seek expertise in science and the confidence to act on it.”

“As we face coronavirus Joe Biden has been a voice of reason and resilience with a clear path to lead us out of this crisis,” she said.

Christianity EtcCAN Declares One Week Daily Prayers Against COVID-19 by adebuk47(op): 1:13am On Apr 16, 2020
The Christian Association of Nigeria has directed all its members nationwide to dedicate 30 minutes each day for the next seven days to praise God in the fight against coronavirus.

The organisation said the prayer session should commence with effect from Monday, April 20 to Sunday April 26, 2020.

The President of CAN, Samson Ayokunle, issued the directive in his memo dated April 14, 2020 to each of the leaders of the five blocs in CAN, national officers, state chairmen, chairperson of women in CAN and chairman of its youth wing.

The memo read, “Dear servants of God, calvary greetings to you in the precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ who is the resurrection and the life.

“The Lord ministered strongly to my spirit that we should take a step further in winning the battle over many challenges facing our nation and the church in Nigeria, especially, the present rampaging COVID-19 pandemic by using Paul & Silas’ Praise Approach (Acts. 16: 25-26) to provoke further divine intervention.

“I therefore enjoin all Christian families to set aside 30 minutes each day for the next seven days to praise the beauty of God’s Holiness with effect from Monday April 20 to Sunday April 26, 2020.

“I will be relying upon the Holy Spirit and your responsible leadership in coordinating this just like you did during the last Prayer Chain. I believe that if we do this with one accord, God will do something very positive soon for us, not only by wiping away the global COVID-19 pandemic, but by also helping us to overcome other challenges facing our dear country and the body of Christ in Nigeria.”

HealthBREAKING: Doctor Treating COVID-19 Patient Dies In Lagos by adebuk47(op):
A 51-year-old medical doctor on Wednesday became the first health worker in Nigeria to die of COVID-19 after contracting the virus from a patient he had treated.

The doctor, who died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, was rushed to the facility on Monday after attempting to manage a COVID-19 patient in a private hospital in Lagos.

The Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of the hospital, Prof Wasiu Adeyemo, said the doctor was not a staff of the hospital but was rushed to the facility after he showed symptoms of the disease.

“The doctor is not a LUTH staff; he was a private practitioner, though he trained in LUTH some 18, 20 years ago. I remember I met him, I know him, he left LUTH around 2002. One of his classmates called me that he has some issues in his private hospital, so I asked that he should be brought to LUTH. He was COVID-19 positive, we started him on drugs but unfortunately, he died this morning (Wednesday),” Adeyemo said.

The LUTH CMAC said he would not disclose the name of the doctor and his hospital, saying it is against the ethics of the medical profession.

They (two pilots and 10 passengers) are to appear in court on May 19, 2020 for trial.

The 10 passengers were identified as Nwogu Chibunna, ‘m’ (39); Peter Michael, ‘m’ (43); Ajagba Iheanyi, ‘m’ (35); Ekperewechi Oguguo, ‘m’ (43); Nsikan Pius, ‘m’ (38); Abanobi Chinoso, ‘m’ (27); Udoh Hagan, ‘m’ (28); Okachukwu Chuks, ‘m’ (41); Goddy Chukwu, ‘m’ (42); and Omerurike Chijioke, ‘m’ (43).

Chief Magistrate, D.D. Ihua-Maduenyi, granted the two pilots bail after hearing the bail application by their counsel.

Lawyer for the Caverton pilots, Nwokedi Ibe, had presented a bail application, seeking the court to grant the two pilots bail.

In granting them (two pilots) bail, Ihua-Maduenyi, stated that they must present a surety, who must be a management staff of Caverton Helicopters, own a landed property in Port Harcourt and ensure that the two pilots attended trial.

The chief magistrate stated that the surety would sign a bail bond of N1 million each for the two pilots.

Earlier, the court granted a motion abridging the time for the bail application to be filed following a motion moved by Caverton Helicopters.
