JUST IN: EFCC Arrests AVSEC Inspector, Two Others Over N4.4bn Gold, Cash Smuggling at Kano Airport

The EFCC on thursday, June 11, 2026, arrested Aviation Security Inspector Ali Baffa and two accomplices at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport for allegedly smuggling 22.2kg of unprocessed gold bars worth over N4.4 billion, the Kano Zonal Directorate confirmed.

Preliminary findings show Baffa concealed the gold in his trousers to bypass checks and pass it to overseas-bound passengers. Aushabu Nasidi, who allegedly supplied the bars, was caught with multiple foreign currencies — 3,000 Saudi Riyals, 40,000 Turkish Lira, 199.75 Kuwaiti Dinar, and others — while Mukhtar Muhammad Dan Zaria admitted smuggling about 40.2kg of gold between June 1 and June 11 using the same method.

The arrests followed a routine EFCC surveillance operation targeting bulk cash and mineral smuggling at airports. All three suspects are in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations, the commission said.

Married woman whose abduction sparked public fundraising is found in hotel with lover.

A married mother, identified as Oluchi, whose family asked for the public's help in raising funds for her ransom payment after she was kidnapped, has been found in a hotel with her lover.

The family of Mrs Oluchi believed she had been kidnapped and her husband Mr Tony reported to the police that his wife was abducted in the Ikpoba Hill area of Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.

Oluchi, a business woman at Ramat Park, Benin City, Edo State, went missing on May 27, 2026.

Subsequently, a number called the family that Oluchi had been kidnapped and demanded for a 50 million Naira ransom for her release.

The family posted a picture of Mrs Oluchi on social media, asking for help from the public.

Mrs Oluchi's daughter, who lives in Canada, led the fundraiser as she begged for help in rescuing her mother.

Harmony Ladies Club, a club Mrs Oluchi belongs to, also joined in soliciting funds to secure her release.

However, investigations by the police led operatives to a hotel in Ubiaroko, Delta State, where the woman was found.

According to Punch, police tracked the phone number used to demand the ransom and it led them to one of the suspects in the hotel.

When police arrived the hotel, they met a man identified as Mr Israel Ability with the "kidnapped" woman, Mrs Oluchi.

“Police traced the number of the man to a hotel in Ubiaroko, Delta State. They met the man and the kidnapped woman inside a hotel,” a source told Punch.

According to the source, the woman’s husband was later informed of the development after police operatives made the discovery.

Reacting to the incident in a now-viral video, the woman’s daughter, Anita, expressed shock over the outcome of the investigation, saying the family had been devastated by the development.

The Harmony Ladies Club also reacted to the development, expressing disappointment over the outcome of the case. They have distanced themselves from Mrs Oluchi.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, CSP Moses Yamu, said four persons had been arrested in connection with the case.

REVISITING THE SPECTACULAR CAPTURE OF HAUSA KIDNAP KINGPIN HAMISU BALA ALIAS WADUME.
The arrest of the notorious Hausa kidnap kingpin Hamisu Bala popularly known as Wadume, is one of the most controversial anti-crime stories in Nigeria's modern history. It exposed deep institutional rivalries and collusion between high-level criminals and elements of the Nigerian military.The saga unfolded across several dramatic stages in 2019:

👉1. The Tracking and Initial Arrest
Wadume operated a lucrative kidnap-for-ransom network across Nigeria's northeast and north-central states from his base in Taraba State.

The Breakthrough: The Nigeria Police Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT) cracked his operation after arresting one of his accomplices. Under interrogation, the accomplice was used to track Wadume's movements via phone conversations.

🔥The Arrest: On 6 August 2019, undercover IRT operatives tracked Wadume to his hometown of Ibi, Taraba State. They successfully arrested him at a local spot without a fight, handcuffed him, and placed him into an unmarked operational vehicle to transport him to Abuja.

👉2. The Deadly Military Ambush and Escape
The arrest quickly turned into a national tragedy as the police team attempted to leave Taraba State.

The Attack: As the police vehicle approached a military checkpoint along the Ibi–Wukari road, soldiers attached to the 93 Battalion, Takum, opened fire on the vehicle. The barrage caused the police vehicle to somersault into the bush.

🔥The Fatalities: The soldiers shot and killed three police officers and one civilian, while injuring five others.

The Collaboration: Led by an army Captain Tijjani Balarabe (who was later revealed to be on Wadume's payroll), the soldiers freed the handcuffed kingpin. Balarabe took Wadume to a local welder to have his chains cut off with a spoon and hacksaw, allowing him to escape.

👉3. The National Hunt and Rearrest
The incident caused a severe standoff and public warfare of words between the Army and the Police. President Muhammadu Buhari ordered a high-level investigation while the police launched a massive nationwide manhunt.

🔥The Capture: Exactly two weeks later, on 19 August 2019, IRT operatives successfully tracked Wadume to a hidden residence in the Hotoro area of Kano State. He was rearrested without further bloodshed and flown directly to Abuja.

The Confession: Upon his arrest, Wadume confessed on camera that the military personnel had intentionally attacked the police to free him, confirming widespread suspicions of deep-seated collusion.

👉4. Conviction and ReleaseWadume was arraigned alongside several civilians and security accomplices.

The Sentencing: In July 2022, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Wadume to seven years in prison. Crucially, he was convicted only on counts of escaping lawful custody and unlawfully dealing in prohibited firearms, as the core charges of kidnapping were dropped due to a lack of prosecuted evidence.

✖Freedom: Because his sentence was backdated to his initial arrest in 2019, Wadume was released from Kuje Prison in April 2024 after serving his full term. Upon returning to Taraba State, he was controversially greeted with a heroic, jubilant welcome by local community members. Celebrating criminals has become normalised in Nigeria so long as you have money to splash around.
