Late last year, someone contacted me for railings,I was almost through with the makings when thieves came and bundled everything, I didn't even call the owner for one day until he asked me what was delaying his job. I explained my predicament to him and went on to replace and complete his job without him adding a Kobo to it. Same year, someone came to my shop and paid for four doors with the keys, told me he was coming same day to pick up. Two days later,he came and no one could explain what happened to his doors, I replaced them completely and he didn't pay me a dime.

For you to ask him to move materials to your site (probably to ensure that he's working and that your money is safe), you're completely responsible for the safety of the materials and tools. If after the first stealing incident, you still went on to insist he continues working on the site without you providing better security, that ensures that you're very much responsible. You should have provided private security and CCTV camera system to ensure ultimate security.

The caller identified as a client saying someone gave him my number that I can handle his construction project.
He later deflected the conversation into procuring cement and aggregate, that if I have dealers I should make contact so the materials can be delivered to the supposed construction site, that payment will be made on delivery.

Is this a new way of scamming, robbing, and kidnapping such dealers?

Materials got missing from a supposedly secure site on more than a couple of occasions, and both of you still decided to store more materials and a couple of expensive tools at the same site over a festive period? Not a smart decision in my opinion.

I think this is a matter of both of you making a serious mistake that has unfortunately resulted in huge losses, which in my opinion should be shared by both of you.

@raymondFirstborn has accepted to replace missing materials which he rightly should. Now the issue in contention is who takes the hit for the missing tools? @Adedward you knew fully well that the site wasn't secure, inspite of reassurances from raymondFirstborn, yet went ahead to keep your expensive tools there over an extended period, so I belief you have to also take some responsibility for the missing tools. I think both of you should share the cost for the tools. Both of you just need to discuss amicably and come to an agreement on how to achieve this.

In the mean time, raymondFirstborn's offer of completing the job with rented tools might not be such a bad idea.

If you were genuine, with a twin detached duplex, you would have made enough money to buy back your tools. From glass railings, cubicle you would have made enough to recoup your loses.
