EducationDeji Calls For Establishment Of Federal Government College In Akure by ademolasb(op): 4:36pm On Apr 25, 2016
The Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, has called for the establishment of a Federal Government College for boys in Akure.

Aladelusi made the call at an emergency meeting of the Parents Teachers Association of Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) in Akure on Monday.

He commended the government for establishing FGGC in Akure, saying that the school had impacted positively on the community and the country at large.

Aladelusi stressed the importance of girl-child education, saying that educated women played important roles in the society.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was called to address the issue of two cooks of the college who were arrested on April 4 by the Police for allegedly using sanitary pads of students for ritual purposes.

The cooks were accused of going to dustbins in the school to pick used sanitary pads and some other personal items of girls in hostels.

The traditional said it was normal for parents to feel concerned whenever they heard such stories and appealed that the school should wait for the police concluded their investigation.

Mrs Ibifuro Harrison, the state Commissioner of Police, who was at the meeting, said the police had investigated the matter and found nothing incriminating against the cooks.

Harrison said that it was the timely intervention of the police that saved the issue from degenerating, adding that it would have created disaffection among the students, teachers and Akure community.

“My joy is that no harm has happened to anyone. We investigated the matter and we did not find any of the allegations to be true,” she said.

Harrison advised parents to teach their children proper ways of disposing their “personal things and instill discipline in them’’.

Chief Imam of Akure, Alhaji Yayi Akorede, advised parents to allow peace to reign and return their wards to the school.

Akorede said people should plan for the progress of the school, saying, “this school is for Akure community and it must go on”.

Mrs Florence Ejikeme, the Principal of the school, said investigations had been conducted at different levels and nothing incriminatory was found.

Ejikeme said that the Police, the PTA and the old girls association of the college investigated the matter and found that the story was not true.

“I took personal pains to investigate the matter, what l found out was the girls were just restless and finding a way of stirring up dust,” she said.
Ejikeme said the meeting had resolved the issue and measures to prevent future occurrence.

She advised the parents to get to the management of the college on any issue rather than spreading false information.

Akin Asimolowo, the PTA Chairman, said the meeting was just to put an end to the ill feelings parents might have on the issue.

Asimolowo advised parents to always consult the PTA and the school authorities on issues bothering them.

CrimeController-general Of Prisons Denies Alleged Assault By Aides On Female Lawmaker by ademolasb(op): 9:55am On Apr 24, 2016
Dr Peter Ekpendu, the Controller-General of Prisons has denied reports on an alleged assault on Hon. Onyemaechi Mrakpor, a female member of the House of Representatives by his aides.

This is contained in a statement signed by Francis Enobore, the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) Spokesperson, made available on Saturday in Abuja.

There was an alleged report that security operatives attached to the convoy of the CG on Wednesday slapped and bashed the car of the lawmaker for attempting to overtake his 20-car convoy.

Following the incident, the House of Representatives on Thursday summoned the CG and the Minister of Interior, Abdulraman Dambazau to appear before it.

The statement noted that it was true that the Controller-General was at the National Assembly on the invitation of a Committee to attend to some official issues.

“However, neither the pilot car in front of him nor his official car had any confrontation with anyone. He also went there with four cars and not 20 as alleged,” the statement added.

It stressed that it was advisable to establish what actually transpired from the security personnel who were on duty at the National Assembly where the incident took place.

“However, since it was alleged that the assault took place within the precinct of the National Assembly, precisely at the security post of the outer gate with hordes of security personnel, it was advisable to establish what actually transpired from these security officers. Also, there were various security agencies there, including that of the National Assembly on duty. The matter is currently being investigated by the police.

The Controller-General is a peace loving and law abiding citizen who has never been involved in any act of bravado, impunity or hooliganism. He will never encourage any form of abuse on any Nigerian, including the honourable member of the National Assembly and will not tolerate any form of indiscipline on the part of his staff.”

EducationUNILAG Sacks Student Union Government, Demands Indemnity From All Parents by ademolasb(op): 8:08am On Apr 24, 2016
The management of the University of Lagos has dissolved the student union of the institution as it announced the resumption of full academic activities on May 2.

The dissolution of the student union was reached at an emergency meeting of the university senate on Friday.

“The University of Lagos Student Union (ULSU) Constitution should be suspended until further notice. The ULSU Executive and the Student Legislative Council should be dissolved forthwith,” a circular released on Saturday stated.
“Faculty and Departmental Associations should work with the University Management through the Students’ Affairs Division in the interim.

“ULSU Constitution should be reviewed to include conflict resolution mechanisms such as establishment of Judicial Arm and Financial Guidelines, which shall be the prelude to subsequent elections into ULSU offices.”

The circular, signed by Taiwo Ipaye, the university’s registrar and secretary of senate, also required every student of the university to sign undertakings, and parents indemnity forms, before they will be allowed to return to their halls of residence.

The university had suspended all academic activities and immediate closure of the university earlier in the month after students protested lack of basic amenities such as water and electricity in their halls of residence.

The protesting students blocked major roads leading into the university, including access to the school’s Senate building and the Assembly Hall where Rahman Bello, the Vice Chancellor, was attending an event.

Armed police officers were later brought in to disperse the angry students.

In a circular released after the protest, the school blamed the lingering fuel crisis for its failure to provide water and other amenities in the students’ halls of residence.

“Senate noted that the problem of poor municipal service is a national issue that the governments at both state and federal level are addressing,” the circular stated.
A statement released on Saturday directed the students to download the undertaking forms from the university’s website, complete and notarised them, and submit alongside the indemnity forms from their parents at their departments in order to obtain a clearance that will grant them entry into examination halls and halls of residence.

“Examinations will commence from Monday, May 9, 2016. Consequently, students are expected to generate their examination dockets and ensure it is duly endorsed by their Course Advisers between Monday, April 25 and Monday, May 2, 2016,” the statement read.

“The University will endeavour to provide electricity in the various halls of residence between the hours of 7.00 pm and 7.00 am daily. The boreholes in the hostels will continue to provide water supply to the hostels until normal supply from the Lagos State Water Corporation resumes.”

CrimeOmg! 16-year-old Boy Shoots To Death 11-year-old Cousin With Father's Gun In Imo by ademolasb(op): 1:00pm On Apr 14, 2016
Complete grief, sorrow, tears and agony have taken over Dikenta Autonomous Community, Avutu in the Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State, following the brutal killing of an 11 year old boy, Jonathan Osuocha by his 16-year old cousin, Chinaza Osuocha.

According to Punch, the issue started from a misunderstanding between the father of the deceased, Ifeanyi Osuocha and his younger brother, the father of the assailant, Ahamefula Osuocha who works as a hunter and a palm-wine tapper.

It was also gathered that Chinaza invited his cousins, Jonathan and Chika to his father’s house. And after sending them to fetch water for him, he entered his father’s room and brought out his father’s hunting gun.

Chinaza pointed the gun at Jonathan, pulled the trigger and the bullet shattered Jonathan’s head. He died on the spot.

Investigations further revealed that after Chinaza was arrested and taken to the police station for interrogation he confessed that it was his father, Ahamaefula that told him to kill his brother with the gun before leaving with a promise that he would give him an undisclosed amount of money when he returned.

According to Punch, the father of the deceased, Remigus Ifeanyi Osuocha disclosed that seven of his children had died mysteriously in the past without a trace of the cause.

He said, “God blessed me with nine children. It was so sad that I have lost seven of them. None of them was sick before dying.

“Although, I am not accusing anybody, I know somebody or something was responsible for the death.

“My younger brother, Ahamefula had attempted shooting me in the past before one of my in-laws who was present saved me.

“Just tell me, what I have done to him that should warrant him to kill my son and who knows if he will later kill this only one that remains”
