Politics › We Won’t Sit-at-home Again – Onitsha Main Market Traders Assure Soludo by adenigga(op): 5:27am On Jan 30 |
Traders at the Onitsha Main Market have pledged to end compliance with the Monday sit-at-home, declaring their readiness to resume full business activities in line with the directive of the Anambra State Government. The pledge was made on Thursday during an interactive session between Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo and market leaders from across the state. The meeting followed the recent closure of the Onitsha Main Market and the prolonged Monday shutdown that has crippled commercial activities in the South-East.Speaking on behalf of the traders, the Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, Mr. Chijioke Okpalugo, said traders were prepared to commence Monday operations in support of the governor’s vision of a “One Anambra,” but appealed for enhanced security to guarantee the safety of lives and property. In his remarks, Governor Soludo declared that all markets and shops in Anambra State must remain open on every working day, including Mondays, stressing that the era of sit-at-home-induced market closures was over.Addressing Onitsha traders specifically, the governor presented a “renovate or rebuild” option for the market, offering either a complete redevelopment into a modern trading hub or a comprehensive overhaul of existing structures. He insisted that business activities must continue irrespective of the option chosen. Soludo described the enforcement of the sit-at-home as a criminal enterprise no longer connected to the agitation for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, dismissing claims that the order was linked to the detained IPOB leader. “It is not linked to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. He does not support the sit-at-home. If it doesn’t happen in Umuahia, his hometown, why Onitsha and Nnewi?” the governor asked. He further alleged that many of those enforcing the sit-at-home were not indigenes of Anambra State and warned that the government would deploy extreme measures if defiance persisted. In response, market leaders requested a visible and sustained security presence in markets, full operation of motor parks to facilitate the movement of buyers and goods, and decisive action against individuals who benefit from or enforce the sit-at-home order. The governor assured traders of an overhaul of the state’s security architecture around markets, pledging that Anambra’s commercial centres would be protected from harassment and intimidation.“Igboland and Anambra will move forward,” Soludo declared. Politics › Christian Media Forum Condemns Shariah Council’s Calls For INEC Chairman’s Sack by adenigga(op): 6:39pm On Jan 29 |
The Christian Media Forum has expressed concern over a recent call by the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria demanding the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, on the basis of his religious faith.
The forum described the call as baseless, unfortunate and highly divisive, stating that such a demand undermines Nigeria’s constitutional principles of fairness, inclusion and religious freedom.
A statement jointly signed by the National President of the Christian Media Forum, Okpani Jacob Onjewu Dickson, and the National Secretary, Andrew Ibrahim Mshelia, said it believes that Nigeria’s democracy thrives when public office holders are assessed on the basis of competence, integrity and performance, rather than religious or ethnic affiliations.
The Supreme Council for Shari’ah was reported to have stated that Muslims across the country would not recognise or legitimise any election conducted under the leadership of an INEC Chairman whose integrity is allegedly in question.
The forum strongly disagreed with this position, warning that such statements are capable of eroding public confidence in democratic institutions and inflaming religious sentiments.
It noted that the call for the removal of the INEC Chairman reportedly came from the President of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah, Sheikh Bashir Umar, during the Council’s 2026 Annual Pre-Ramadan Lecture and General Assembly held in Abuja on Tuesday.
The forum said it finds the timing and context of the statement not only insensitive but ⁷also capable of generating unnecessary tension and chaos across the country.
According to the forum, Nigeria is already grappling with serious challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship and social instability, which require collective responsibility rather than divisive rhetoric.
The forum cautioned that statements capable of promoting religious intolerance should be avoided by respected religious bodies, especially those with wide followership and influence.
It stressed, “No individual or group should attempt to heat up the polity at a time when national unity and peace are urgently needed. “It is too early and inappropriate for any religious organisation to begin making statements that could undermine the credibility of future electoral processes.”
The forum urged the Supreme Council for Shari’ah to channel the same energy and influence towards supporting the Federal Government in addressing insecurity and socio-economic challenges bedevilling the nation, the northern part in particular. It stressed its belief that religious leaders have a responsibility to promote peace, tolerance and national cohesion rather than actions that may deepen divisions.
The forum called on well-meaning Nigerians to disregard any calls or statements capable of inciting religious intolerance or threatening peaceful coexistence.
It reaffirmed its confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission as a constitutional body mandated to conduct free, fair and credible elections, and urged the leadership of INEC to remain focused on its core mandate without distraction or undue pressure from sectional interests.
The forum stated that Nigeria belongs to all citizens, irrespective of faith, and that leadership positions should never be politicised or weaponised along religious lines. It therefore called on all religious and civic leaders to exercise restraint, uphold national unity, and work collectively towards a peaceful, stable and democratic Nigeria. Politics › Onanuga: Why Tinubu Lost Balance In Turkey by adenigga(op): 3:31am On Jan 28 |
Presidential Spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, says President Bola Tinubu lost balance in Turkey because he stepped on a metal object.
Onanuga said this while addressing enquiries on Tuesday regarding the President’s well-being in Ankara.
Daily Trust had reported how Tinubu missed his step briefly and fell in Ankara, capital of Turkey, on Tuesday.
The Nigerian leader was walking alongside his Turkish counterpart, President Recep Erdogan, when the incident happened.
Earlier, Tinubu had inspected a parade as part of the massive reception he received.
A review of the video of the incident showed that the president went down after a camera man moved his tripod stand close to him.
But Onanuga said the President merely stepped on an object, resulting in a minor loss of balance.
“The President stepped on a metal on the floor, which made him lose his balance,” Onanuga said.
“This is not a big deal, except for those who want to make mischief out of a fleeting incident. It was a mere stumble, thank God, not a fall,” he added. Source: https://dailytrust.com/onanuga-why-tinubu-lost-balance-in-turkey

Politics › FG Target Sachet Water Reduction, 2.5 Billion Litres Consumed Annually by adenigga(op): 5:18pm On Jan 27 |
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency says Nigeria consumes over 2.5 billion litres of sachet water annually, produced by more than 32,000 manufacturers across the country.
Prof. Innocent Barikor, the Director -General of NESREA, stated this at the inception meeting of the Child Project –GEF 11193 on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said the project “Circular Solutions to Plastic Pollution in Nigeria” was aimed at reducing plastic sachet water consumption, while ensuring access to safe drinking water.
Barikor said the meeting marked a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to address the growing challenge of plastic pollution in the country.
He said the pervasive issue of single-use plastic water sachets had become both a convenience and an environmental burden.
” Your presence here today reflects our shared commitment to finding sustainable, innovative, and practical solutions to this critical environmental challenge.
“As you are aware, Nigeria consumes over 2.5 billion litres of sachet water annually, produced by more than 32,000 manufacturers across the country.
” While this has helped bridge gaps in access to drinking water, it has also resulted in severe environmental consequences.
“These include blocked drainage systems, flooding, degradation of ecosystems, and risks to public health and biodiversity.
“This dual challenge of water access and plastic pollution makes this project not just timely, but necessary,” he said.
Barikor explained that the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Child Project 11193 represented a strategic and transformative intervention to address the issue of waste management in the country.
” It aligns with Nigeria’s national environmental priorities and NESREA’s mandate to protect and preserve our environment for present and future generations.
” The project adopts a holistic, circular approach—focusing not only on waste management, but on prevention, innovation, policy reform, and systemic change,” he said.
In a Goodwill message, Isabella Vanderbeck, of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), said that Nigeria is a key partner in the efforts to reduce plastic pollution in the country.
” Life without plastic is truly fantastic, let us hit the ground, let us do away with plastic,” Vanderbeck said.
Also speaking, Evelyn Swain of GEF restated the organisation`s commitment to partner with Nigeria to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic water sachets in the country.
” GEF is proud to support Nigeria in its journey to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic water sachets in Nigeria, while ensuring accessible and safe drinking water.
“GEF sees Nigeria not only as a participant in this Integrated Programme, but also as a leader whose experience can help shape global solutions to plastic pollution,” she said.
Swain is a Senior Environmental Specialist and Plastic Reboot Coordinator at GEF Secretariat, represented by Anna Blanpain.
Mrs Zuliat Mohammed, Chief Scientific Officer, Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, expressed the readiness of the ministry to collaborate with NESREA for the success of the project.
“This programme will help Nigeria eliminate all these plastic products in the country,” she said. Source: https://punchng.com/fg-targets-sachet-water-reduction-as-nigeria-consumes-2-5bn-litres-annually

Politics › IPOB Kicks As Soludo Shuts Onitsha Market Over Sit-at-home by adenigga(op): 4:12am On Jan 27 |
The Indigenous People of Biafra has condemned the decision by Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to shut down the Onitsha Main Market for one week following defiance of the government’s Monday sit-at-home directive.Governor Soludo, during an on-site inspection of the sprawling market on Monday, ordered the closure after traders and market leadership refused to open for business, ignoring repeated government appeals to resume normal economic activity. The state government said that the continuous Monday sit-at-home costs Anambra State about N8bn weekly, and the South East region N19.6bn, while disrupting work and other economic activities.“The government cannot stand by while a few individuals willfully undermine public safety and disregard official directives meant to restore normalcy. This is plain economic sabotage. We are not going to allow this. The closure is a protective measure for law-abiding citizens,” Soludo said, warning that if traders fail to comply, the market could remain sealed for up to one month. During the inspection, security agencies—including police, army, and other joint task forces—were deployed to enforce the closure, while barricades were placed around the market perimeter to ensure compliance. But in response, IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, described the governor’s action as “disappointing and unacceptable,” urging residents to defy the closure and resume trading on Tuesday. “No governor has the power to punish citizens for peacefully exercising their conscience. No administration has the right to weaponise markets against the people. The threats to shut down markets for the rest of the week are not governance—they are intimidation. Ndi Anambra must not surrender their rights to fear,” Powerful said. IPOB reiterated that the sit-at-home remains a civil disobedience and peaceful protest against perceived injustices, particularly the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu. “We are not slaves in our ancestral land. The era of warrant chiefs enforcing colonial interests against their own people is long gone. Anambra people will not be ruled by threats and blackmail. Soludo will not remain in office forever. The day he leaves office, history will judge his choices—and the people will remember who stood with them and who stood against them,” he added. The group called on all the Igbo to remain disciplined, peaceful, and focused, describing the struggle as moral, lawful, and historic. Governor Soludo described the shutdown as the latest, and perhaps most drastic, measure to reclaim public spaces and restore economic normalcy on Mondays. “Despite repeated assurances of enhanced security and appeals, many traders at the iconic market once again chose to keep their stalls locked. This absence amounts to a quiet rebellion that nonetheless speaks volumes about the lingering climate of fear,” he said. The governor explained that the market closure is intended to enforce compliance with directives aimed at resuming business activity and preventing economic sabotage. He urged traders to make a choice: “You either decide that you are going to trade here or you go elsewhere. I am very serious about this,” he warned. The state government, through Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, said the shutdown is a response to non-compliance with the Monday sit-at-home abolition order, and warned that if traders fail to resume trading by Monday, February 2, 2026, the market could face a month-long closure. Other markets across the state are expected to operate normally on Mondays, with similar penalties for non-compliance.Checks by our correspondent revealed that civil servants were commuting to state offices in Awka, unlike previous Mondays, indicating partial compliance. Governor Soludo, along with Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, also visited hinterland markets to monitor adherence. While most schools in Onitsha, Nnewi, and Ekwulobia remained technically open, many students and teachers did not report for duty, highlighting the challenge of enforcing Monday resumption. Some parents welcomed the government directive but raised concerns about its sustainability and the security of children on Mondays. Augustine Akor, PTA chairman at Community Secondary School, Inoma, urged the government to strengthen security in schools to ensure compliance. “Markets, banks, and transport stations do not operate on Mondays. Without these essential services, it will be difficult for children to attend school. Security must be beefed up for this directive to work,” he said. Another parent, Patrick Ugor, echoed the sentiment, stressing that the success of Monday resumption depends on safety assurances for both students and teachers. Madam Njideka, a parent of a child at Okwuana Central School, Nnewi, added: “Yes, the governor has done what he should, but how is the directive going to work? Even government offices don’t open. How can I send my children to school on a Monday?” Source: https://punchng.com/ipob-kicks-as-soludo-shuts-onitsha-market-over-sit-at-home

Politics › Why Tinubu Should Be Impeached – El-Rufai by adenigga(op): 6:36pm On Jan 26 |
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has accused President Bola Tinubu of deducting N100b every month from the federation account without approval.
Speaking during an interview on ‘Prime Time’, a programme on Arise Television monitored by DAILY POST, El-Rufai said such an action deserves nothing but impeachment.
According to him, the unauthorised deductions have been going on for over 15 months, amounting to a total of N1.5 trillion.
He said: “Government data. I’m not quoting something out of the air. So for that 100 billion that goes out every month from the Federation account, without appropriation by the National Assembly, by the way, without appropriation by the state assemblies, because part of the money belongs to the states.
“So each state assembly is supposed to appropriate that part. So the entire deduction and expenditure is unconstitutional. It’s an impeachable offense, but it has been going on for more than 15 months from the last time I checked.
“So where has that 1.5 trillion gone? What is it being used for? Why is the security situation just getting worse? Why is the government asking communities to protect themselves?
“Look if you asked me in 2022 or 2023 when we were campaigning, that things would ever be this bad, I would say that you are mentally ill.” Source: https://dailypost.ng/2026/01/26/why-tinubu-should-be-impeached-el-rufai

Politics › Bandits Kidnap Six In Fresh Kaduna Attack by adenigga(op): 5:23am On Jan 26 |
Barely a week after the abduction of 177 church worshippers in the Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, bandits have again struck in the area, abducting six residents of Unguwar Barkonu in Maraban Kajuru.
The latest attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday in Kufana Ward, even as the Christian Association of Nigeria held special prayers for the safe return of the previously abducted worshippers.
A resident of the community, Steven Kefas, said the armed men invaded the area around 1 am, breaking into several houses and abducting six residents.
“Bandits stormed our community at about 1 am, broke into houses and forcefully took six people away to an unknown destination,” Kefas said.
Expressing frustration over the location of the attack, he added, “This incident didn’t occur in a remote village with no access to a road.
It happened right at the heart of Kajuru, in Kudana, where people expect some level of security presence.”
Kefas further lamented the absence of a rapid security response.
“As of the time of filing this report, there was no response from the police or other security agencies. The community was left on its own,” he said.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of CAN in Kajuru Local Government Area, the Rev. Enoch Kaura, said the attack took place around 11 pm on Saturday when bandits invaded the community.
“They surrounded the entire area and created fear among residents,” Kaura said. “But when neighbours raised the alarm, and people started coming out of their houses, the attackers fled, making away with six residents.”
Kaura described the recurring attacks as deeply troubling, especially coming so soon after the abduction of church worshippers.
“It is painful that while families are still crying and praying for the return of the 177 abducted worshippers, bandits have struck again. This has created fear and anxiety in the entire Kajuru axis,” he said.
Efforts to obtain official reaction from the Kaduna State Police Command were unsuccessful.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, could not be reached as his telephone line indicated ‘not reachable’, while a text message sent to him had not been responded to as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, a special prayer session for the safe return of the 177 abducted worshippers was held on Sunday at Tawaliu Baptist Church in Maraban Kajuru.
The prayer gathering attracted Christian leaders from across Kaduna State and parts of northern Nigeria.
Families of the abducted worshippers, some of whom were visibly emotional, attended the service as they continued to wait anxiously for news of their loved ones. Church leaders used the occasion to call on government and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of all abducted persons and restore peace to the area. Politics › DisCos Reject FG’s Free Meter Plan by adenigga(op): 2:39am On Jan 26 |
Power distribution companies have expressed doubt over the directive by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, that prepaid meters must be free for all categories of customers.
Operators, who spoke with our correspondent anonymously due to the sensitivity of the matter, said the minister made only a political statement without considering the input of other stakeholders, especially the installers and meter providers.
On Thursday, the Federal Government banned electricity distribution companies and installers from collecting any form of payment for meters, warning that DisCo officials and installers found extorting customers would be prosecuted. Adelabu issued the warning during an on-site inspection of newly imported smart meters at APM Terminals, Apapa, Lagos.
Adelabu said the meters were procured under the World Bank–funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme and must be installed for consumers free of charge, stressing that any demand for money would be treated as an offence.
He said the meters would be given to all electricity customers, regardless of their band.
“I want to mention that it is unprecedented that these meters are to be installed and distributed to consumers free of charge—free of charge! Nobody should collect money from any consumer. It is an illegality. It is an offence for the officials of distribution companies across Nigeria to request a dime before installation; even the indirect installers cannot ask consumers for a dime. It has to be installed free of charge so that billings and collections will improve for the sector,” Adelabu said.
However, the DisCo operators who spoke with The PUNCH said the meters tagged as free by the Federal Government would still be paid for by the DisCos within a period of 10 years. The operators told our correspondent that the DisCos cannot be the ones paying for installation, wondering why the government wants them to bear the cost of installation.
According to them, meter installers are not DisCo workers, and someone has to bear the cost of installation.
“Those meters you see, someone has to pay for them, and the government expects the DisCos to bear the cost of the so-called free meters. They said the DisCos can pay it over 10 years.
When you ask the DisCos to pay for any capital expenditure, we call it allowable capex. You have to allow it when computing their tariffs; otherwise, it makes their balance sheets toxic,” an official with a distribution company stated.
Another operator said, “We need to know that meter installers are not staff of the DisCos. They are already asking who will pay them if the consumers do not pay. Did the minister consider all those? You said the people should not pay the installers; who should pay them? We, the DisCos, are not the ones installing meters. That role was taken away from the DisCos when Babatunde Fashola was the power minister.
“They said the DisCos have no business with metering. This is the result we are seeing today. Assuming the DisCos are the ones installing meters, you can force them to pay. We will all see the outcome of that pronouncement in the coming days. If the government can pay installers, no problem, but I’m not sure any DisCo will volunteer to pay the installers.”
The officials described Adelabu’s comment as a populist statement from a politician.
“The statement was just a populist statement from a politician. We are not sure if the President sent him that message. He said everything should be free; where is the position of cost recovery? Anything you do in the power sector, you have to first consider who bears the cost. Somebody has to bear the cost to avoid debt piling up.
“The government ought to sit with the Discos and the meter manufacturers to seek advice if the plan is to make sure the people don’t bear any cost, and we will come up with our various contributions. But instead of doing that, the government would go and make unrealistic promises to the public. For instance, the meters are coming in batches, but you have made the masses believe that there are enough meters for everyone. That’s not the reality,” one of the sources stated.
The operators added that the free meter declaration would jeopardise the Meter Asset Providers scheme, which allows the sale of meters to individuals who desire them.
“People are now rejecting the Meter Asset Providers scheme because they have heard that meters are free. The minister came up with a very wrong narrative. Has he sat down with stakeholders before going out to say meters are free? How can you say you have enough meters for over five million people? We still have the MAP scheme ongoing, whereby the meter provider sells directly to the customer. MAP is still there because the free meters they are bringing cannot fill the metering gap.
“So, MAP has been going on simultaneously over the years. But this latest statement is now affecting MAP because people don’t know the difference. The government should clarify and let the people know that the free meters can’t go round everyone; they should state the areas that can get the free meters and the category of customers, so that others not captured will know they will have to go for MAP by getting the meters with their money and get a refund through energy credits over time.
“But with the minister’s statement that the free meters are for all customers, nobody will go for MAP again, and I don’t know how badly this will affect local meter suppliers in the MAP scheme,” one of the DisCo operator stated.
The stakeholders urged the government and the regulator to always consider cost recovery in their plans.
“If he says meter installers should not be paid, who’s going to pay them? The DisCos or the Ministry of Power? Those are the questions the government should answer. The regulator should always talk about cost recovery. From the look of things, the minister does not seem to care much about cost recovery, and he’s happy making political statements.
“He has to tell us who’s going to pay. We agree, people should not pay, no problem, but who will pay? Is it going to be subsidised again? Is the government going to pay for it? If the government says the operators should pay, where will they recover the money from? Every penny has to be accounted for and recovered. The purpose of doing business is cost recovery; if you cannot recover your cost, you will be cutting corners,” another operator stressed.
The DisCos asked the government to always tell the masses the truth, worrying that the customers are already getting agitated over the minister’s comment that meters must be free.
“We must always tell the people the truth. I don’t know how the minister intends to do it, but his comments are not helping matters; he’s not even protecting the MAP scheme. He is putting the MAP scheme in jeopardy. Already, customers are fighting their DisCos because the minister made a statement that meters are free for all. How’s that possible? It is a challenge, but we see how it goes,” an official with one of the DisCos said. Source: https://punchng.com/discos-reject-fgs-free-meter-plan

Politics › I Rely On Allah For Reelection In 2027 – Governor Yusuf by adenigga(op): 5:56am On Jan 25 |
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, for the first time since the controversies surrounding his defection to the All Progressives Congress, has stated that he believes in Allah as the ultimate source of power and guidance.
“In 2023, it was God who gave me power, not anybody else, and I still thank and appreciate Him as the only one who will allow me to continue in 2027,” Governor Yusuf declared while presenting motorcycles to his social media handlers on Saturday.
Governor Yusuf added, “Even all the talk about 2027 is a misplaced priority, because who knows whether he will make it to tomorrow, let alone 2027.”
He emphasised that his major concern at present is Kano, saying, “We have to get it right to have our full peace and security before talking about anything, and that is my major concern now, not anything else.
“Let me remind everybody that, to me, Kano comes first, not loyalty to anybody. Everyone should know that no one is bigger than Kano; we shall all be loyal to Kano.”
Speaking on the historical creation of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, the former Deputy Governor of the State, Professor Hafiz Abubakar, stated, “Myself and five others created the Kwankwasiyya Movement and even gave it a Red Cap symbol, not Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.”
He added, “Dr Yunusa Adamu Dangwani, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, myself and others constructed the acronym of Kwankwasiyya when the going was tough and we were somewhat sidelined.
“At that time, we gave every support to Kwankwaso to survive the political tsunamis directed at him by the political bigwigs in Kano, and that was how we created the movement.”
Professor Abubakar criticised Kwankwaso for failing to appreciate those who supported him, believing that he knew it all.
“That bad behaviour drove all those loyal to him away, leaving him alone. We thought Kwankwaso would act like the late Mallam Aminu Kano, who always acknowledged that others created NEPU, PRP and the Sawaba movements, giving them credit at every opportunity. Alas, that was not the case with Kwankwaso,” he said.

Politics › Nigerian Economy Better Under Tinubu – APC Chieftain, Arise by adenigga(op): 10:31am On Jan 24 |
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Ayodele Arise has explained that bold economic reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have been impactful to the Nigerian economy compared to his predecessors despite criticisms from opposition party stalwarts.
Arise made the remarks at the weekend while speaking with journalists, amid sustained criticism of the Tinubu administration by opposition figures.
The former senator, who represented Ekiti North Senatorial District between 2007 and 2011, said the president’s policy decisions have had a positive impact on economic growth and social development.
From my position, I can say that the decisions of Mr. President have benefited many Nigerians,” Arise said.
“We can see positive movement in economic growth, supported by statistics available to the public,” he added.
He cited a reduction in inflation and increased funding for critical institutions such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as evidence of progress.
According to him, the student loan scheme has enabled many young Nigerians to access tertiary education, ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent qualified students from going to school.
Arise also linked improved stability in the university system to the Tinubu administration’s engagement with academic and non-academic unions, including ASUU and NASU.
He said academic disruptions had reduced, allowing students to complete programs within the stipulated time.
“Before now, students spent six or seven years on a four-year course, which contributed to brain drain,” he said, adding: “today, there is greater certainty that students can complete their studies on time, which has helped to curb that trend.”
On governance at the grassroots, Arise said President Tinubu’s insistence on financial autonomy for local governments was aimed at accelerating development in rural areas. He noted that allowing councils direct access to their funds would enhance service delivery in areas such as road construction, healthcare, and primary education.
“For the first time, local governments can meaningfully impact the lives of people at the grassroots,” he said, adding that councils are now better positioned to be accountable to their communities.
The APC chieftain also defended the removal of the fuel subsidy, describing it as a difficult but necessary decision that ended years of abuse and revenue leakages.
“Only a courageous leader could take that step and stand by it,” Arise said, alleging that the subsidy regime previously benefited a small group of individuals through fraudulent practices. Source: https://dailypost.ng/2026/01/24/nigerian-economy-better-under-tinubu-apc-chieftain-arise

Politics › Sachet Alcohol Ban Threatens Five Million Jobs, Distillers Warn NAFDAC by adenigga(op): 5:46am On Jan 24 |
Members of the distillers’ association, under the aegis of the Food, Beverages and Tobacco Senior Staff Association and the National Union of Food, Beverages and Tobacco Employees, have warned that the enforcement being carried out by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control will displace no fewer than 5.5 million Nigerians from their jobs.
The unions, which are affiliates of the Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress, disclosed this on Friday when they besieged the Lagos office of NAFDAC to protest the order stopping them from distributing their products.
PUNCH Online reports that NAFDAC said it had begun enforcing the ban on the production and sale of alcohol in sachets and PET bottles below 200ml.
NAFDAC had, on November 11, 2025, announced plans to enforce a total ban on such products by December 2025, in line with a directive from the Senate.
However, enforcement was initially halted after the Federal Government, through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, called for an immediate suspension of all actions and measures related to the proposed ban, pending consultations and a final directive.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, during a media briefing on Wednesday, said the agency had received a matching order from the Senate to proceed and that enforcement had already commenced.
Speaking at the protest ground on Friday, the Executive Secretary of FOBTOB, Solomon Adebosin, said the enforcement would displace no fewer than 5.5 million direct and indirect jobs.
He noted that the policy undermined the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which seeks to attract investment into the country.
The executive secretary added that NAFDAC’s claim that sachet alcohol and PET drinks were accessible to minors and children could not be backed by empirical facts.
Adebosin said, “We are here today to protest the sudden seizure of our companies in the distillery sector by NAFDAC concerning the issue of sachet drinks and PET bottles that are less than 200ml.
“We have 500,000 Nigerians working directly in this sector and over five million working indirectly, and they are going to be affected.
“Access and control are what we should be talking about. Let us be able to put control on these things such that children and minors do not have access to them.”
He stressed that the distillers had continued to invest in advocacy and sensitisation to prevent unqualified persons from consuming their products.
Also speaking, the Head of Department, Brewery and Tobacco, of the NUFBTE, Azeez Razaq, alleged that the actions of NAFDAC depicted sabotage of the growth of indigenous manufacturers.
He condemned the decision of the agency to violate the directive of the SGF, which ordered a stay of action on the ban.
Razaq added that shutting down the companies would result in job losses that could further worsen insecurity in Nigeria.
While reading the demands of the unions, a member of FOBTOB, Anthony Oyagha, added, “We call on the Presidency to urgently intervene to ensure that NAFDAC aligns its actions with government policy, legislative oversight, and the broader national interest.
“Local manufacturers deserve honour, protection, and partnership, not punitive measures that destroy investments, livelihoods, and confidence in Nigeria’s business environment.
“We respectfully urge Mr President to act decisively to safeguard indigenous industries, protect jobs, and ensure that regulatory agencies serve the Nigerian people and not external interests.” Source: https://punchng.com/sachet-alcohol-ban-threatens-five-million-jobs-distillers-warn-nafdac

Politics › Bandits Kill Three, Injure One In Fresh Benue Attacks by adenigga(op): 5:00pm On Jan 23 |
Three persons have been confirmed dead while another sustained injuries following coordinated attacks by suspected bandits across Buruku, Okokolo and Naka Local Government Areas of Benue State on Thursday.
In one of the incidents, Mbakura Mbagen community in Buruku LGA was invaded in the early hours of the morning.
Reports indicate that about five armed men stormed the village around 3:30 a.m., killing two members of the state’s Civil Protection Guards, identified as John Kunde and Sughter Orbunde.
During the raid, the attackers also kidnapped Aondowase Ager and carted away a Bajaj motorcycle owned by one of the victims.
The remains of the slain guards were later deposited at the mortuary in Ugbema, as security efforts intensified to rescue the abducted victim.
Also on Thursday morning, Ejima community in Okokolo LGA came under attack at about 6:00 a.m. when suspected armed herders opened fire indiscriminately.
The shooting left one resident, Daniel Matthew, with gunshot wounds. Security operatives were subsequently deployed to the area and surrounding locations to track down the assailants and avert further violence.
A third attack was recorded later in the day at Ammuneke village in Naka LGA. Two young men, Akula Gugun, 27, and Odi Shimayoho, 28, were killed during the assault.
Their bodies were evacuated to the Agagbe morgue, while security agencies launched searches in nearby bushes in pursuit of those responsible.

Politics › FG Bans Meter Installation Charges, Threatens Sanctions by adenigga(op): 5:08am On Jan 23 |
The Federal Government has banned electricity distribution companies and installers from collecting any form of payment for meters, warning that DisCo officials and installers found extorting customers will be prosecuted. The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, issued the warning on Thursday during an on-site inspection of newly imported smart meters at APM Terminals, Apapa, Lagos.Adelabu said the meters were procured under the World Bank–funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme and must be installed for consumers free of charge, stressing that any demand for money would be treated as an offence.Adelabu, who was received into the Apapa Port Command of the Nigerian Customs Service by Area Controller Emmanuel Oshoba, expressed happiness over the importation of another tranche of 500,000 smart meters under DISREP. He said the meters would be given to all electricity customers, regardless of their band. “I want to mention that it is unprecedented that these meters are to be installed and distributed to consumers free of charge—free of charge! Nobody should collect money from any consumer. It is an illegality. It is an offence for the officials of distribution companies across Nigeria to request a dime before installation; even the indirect installers cannot ask consumers for a dime.It has to be installed free of charge so that billings and collections will improve for the sector.“The main objective of coming here today is to carry out a physical on-site inspection of shipments of smart meters that the Federal Government has imported under the World Bank-funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme. This programme is supporting the Federal Government to import a total of about 3.4 million meters in two batches; the first batch is 1.43 million meters, out of which we have received close to about a million meters. Currently, almost 150,000 meters have already been installed across all distribution companies in the country. “ And what we have today is close to 500,000 meters that we just received. They are all smart meters, and I believe that the journey of completely eliminating the meter gap in the Nigerian power sector has just begun,” Adelabu said, even as he expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of metering. Adelabu was optimistic that in a couple of years, every household, business, and institution would be fully metered so that billings and collections in the power sector would become more transparent, fair, and just. He added that it would also improve the readiness of electricity consumers to pay their bills, leading to improved liquidity in the sector.“I’m quite excited and elated with what’s happening because it’s unprecedented. This is the first time in the history of this country that a government will be importing and locally buying this number of meters to ensure that the power sector is completely transformed. This is like walking the talk. Our target reform in the sector is not just verbal. Nigerians can see that this is real; it’s not just a promise of the tongue. “We said it is free. We are not saying this behind closed doors. We are telling Nigerians that the distribution and installation of these meters in every location is free of charge, and it is declared an offence—an illegality—for any DisCo official or installer to request money from the beneficiaries of these meters. We will track and monitor this installation. We also await tip-offs. We have the regulatory commission (NERC), which has offices in some of these locations, and the state regulatory authorities also have offices in each state.“We are going to open a customer complaint desk whereby, if you notice any such requests for illegal money, you report it, and the authorities will follow up. We are not leaving the installation to the DisCos alone; we’re also creating an interface between the installers and consumers to accelerate the pace of installation. We have some issues with the data and addresses of unmetered customers. We are working hand-in-hand with the DisCos to ensure clean data so that we can accelerate installation. “We also want to maintain a register whereby unmetered customers can register their names. Once we have a list, we will validate it with the DisCos, improving the pace of installation. We are looking for confirmed cases of requests for money by any DisCo official or installer. Nigerians will know what we can do, and it will serve as a deterrent for others not to commit such an offence or illegality. That’s the plan. “Extortion is not allowed, but there must be confirmed cases of such extortion, and the officials involved—no matter how high—will be prosecuted. It will be publicised and serve as a deterrent to others with similar intentions. We will not allow that. This is a government effort, and no activity of a DisCo or installer should frustrate government efforts to ensure that life is made easy for Nigerians and that we have a stable, reliable, and functional power sector,” he said. Adelabu added that the Tinubu administration is resolving a decades-long problem that has affected liquidity. “But the boldness, courage, and political will of the government to go ahead with this should be commended. We will track it end-to-end to ensure that the government’s effort is well implemented and our desired objectives are achieved. “The aggregate meter gap covers all categories of customers. We are not discriminating. We are prioritising every Nigerian, every customer, every electricity user. The issue of Band A, Band B, or Band C is temporary; it is our systematic way of ensuring this reform reaches everyone. The meters will be given to all levels of customers and not restricted to a single band. I am committing to that,” he stressed. As journalists expressed doubts over the possibility of free meter distribution to customers, the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, Ayo Gbeleyi, stated that the bureau coordinates the implementation of the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme on behalf of the Federal Government and serves on the boards of all 11 electricity distribution companies. Gbeleyi said, “Regarding concerns that DisCos are delaying meter installations, you will soon see a new order or circular from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission prescribing the protocols and processes DisCos must follow to ensure unhindered access for meter installations. “We are monitoring this. We have our dashboard, trackers, and all stakeholders’ hands on deck to ensure seamless and rapid deployment of these meters. One more thing—the meters here are manufactured to the specific requirements of each DisCo. They are inscribed on the meter, with an anti-theft protocol embedded. The configuration is for a particular DisCo, so a meter configured for Eko DisCo cannot be installed in Ibadan.”Speaking, the Chairman of Mojec, Mojisola Abdul, said the meters supplied by the Federal Government are designed to genuinely generate more revenue for the country and supply more power. “I’m telling you, physically, we have installed almost 150,000 meters, and they are free. Don’t give anybody money. You are not allowed. We had a meeting Wednesday with the minister and the DG of BPE about further progress on making it easy for every Nigerian. We are calling it mobile registration of free meters. If you register today, your meter will be installed within three days,” she said. On the delay in meter installations after months of application and payments made, the minister reassured, “This is our country. It is valid that there will be apprehensions and reservations because of past experiences. Previously, there was limited meter availability, and payment was required. “But this programme has two advantages: first, the volume is now sufficient—we have received almost 1 million meters, with another 1.55 million meters coming in the second phase. Second, the meters must be installed free of charge. The complications experienced in the past will be completely eliminated. We had a meeting on Wednesday for almost two to three hours to discuss all existing complications and foreseeable difficulties, and I assure you we already have effective solutions to all these problems.”Adelabu also visited the National Meter Test Station in Oshodi, where meters are tested by the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency to ensure they meet required standards. Nigeria currently has over five million customers under estimated billing.Source: https://punchng.com/fg-bans-meter-installation-charges-threatens-sanctions

Crime › 5 Soldiers Killed, Many Injured In Boko Haram Suicide Attack In Borno by adenigga(op): 4:39am On Jan 22 |
Five soldiers have been killed when a Boko Haram suicide bomber rammed into a military convoy in the Timbuktu triangle in Borno State, while an unspecified number of troops were injured.Security sources confirmed that two senior military officers, a major and a lieutenant, were affected in the attack.“The attack caused significant damage to military equipment used for offensive and defensive operations in the weeks-long clearance operations,” said one of the soldiers. He said the terrorists used a car loaded with explosives to ram into the military convoy. The troops were returning from a clearance operation that successfully dislodged several insurgents camps and killed many of them when the attack reportedly occurred. “Yes, you know, every operation came with setbacks, but we overcame it. Unfortunately, we lost five soldiers in the incident. Manga (the Commander) is hale and hearty and the operation continues, thank you,” an officer who did not want to be named said. He said armoured and logistics vehicles were destroyed when the van laden with explosives rammed into the convoy, on Tuesday. It was learned that the corpses have been flown to Maiduguri, while officers who sustained injuries in the attack, have also been taken to hospital for medical attention. Recall that on Monday, the Troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) said they had cleared multiple terrorist camps and thwarted drone attacks in the area.A statement by spokesman of the operation, Lt- Col Sani Uba, said in the ongoing Operation DESERT SANITY, arms and equipment were also recovered from the terrorists. A statement, yesterday by Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer of the OPHK, said: “On Tuesday while consolidating at a harbour area approximately 6 km North of Chilaria, troops encountered II Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices, VBIED. Through vigilance and swift action, one VBIED was successfully neutralised. “The second VBIED, however, breached the defensive position affecting some logistics platforms. In the course of this attack, some gallant soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force paid the supreme price, while others sustained injuries. “The wounded were promptly evacuated by Nigerian Army Aviation helicopters to 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital. “Throughout the evacuation, Nigerian Airforce platforms from the Air Component in synergy with other Nigerian Army air platforms provided continuous overwatch to ensure the safe extraction of casualties and the security of ground forces neutralising more terrorists in the process.” Source: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2026/01/5-soldiers-killed-many-injured-in-boko-haram-suicide-attack-in-borno
