bestofnollywood:
Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has highlighted Nigeria’s low tax collection as a significant challenge to financing large-scale public health initiatives. Speaking at the Nutrivision 2024 event, a Pan-African youth dialogue on nutrition held in Abuja, Gates emphasized that Nigeria’s tax-to-GDP ratio remains among the lowest in the world.

Gates pointed out that the mutual distrust between the government and citizens contributes to the low tax collection. He stated, “Nigeria’s tax-to-GDP ratio stands at just 10.86%, much lower than even the regional average of 15.6%.” This situation limits the country’s ability to adequately fund crucial sectors like health and education.

adenigga:

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria, also known as Shiites, has condemned the alleged forceful removal of Hijab by police officers in Abuja, describing it as a grave religious abuse and blasphemy.

According to a statement by Maryam Sani, on behalf of the Sisters Forum of the Islamic movement, the incident involved Muslim women in detention who were allegedly forced to remove their Hijab, a religious headscarf.

The statement denounced the act as a violation of religious freedom and cultural sensitivity.

“We will publicise this abuse to the public (within and outside the country) and also challenge it in the court of law,” the group threatened.

This comes after a one-minute, twenty-one-second video taken within the premises of the FCT Police Command, which was shared in a WhatsApp group of the police community in the FCT went viral on social media showing how the police forcefully removed the Hijab of Muslim sisters, while in police detention.

Sani claimed the Muslim Sisters were arrested during the 2024 Abuja Arba’een Symbolic Trek.

The statement read:

“Our attention has also been drawn to pictures of people arrested during the 2024 Abuja Abra’een Symbolic Trek paraded by the police on 28 August 2024 to newsmen at SARS Abbatoir. The pictures taken by the newsmen also showed our Muslim sisters without Hijab.

“Hijab is a commandment of Allah, the creator of earth and heaven. Allah (T) says in the Qur’an, ‘O Prophet! Say to your wives, your daughters, and the women of the believers that they should let down upon themselves their jalabib.’ (Qur’an: Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 59).

“Hijab is our religion, culture, and right, and the abuse of Hijab is more painful to us than the shelling of live ammunition on us. We will not take this abuse lightly. Certainly, an abuse to Hijab is not just an abuse to the people arrested but to the Muslims and the religion of Islam.

“Verily, the leadership of the police is fully aware of the sanctity of Hijab to Muslims; they just decided to deliberately abuse our religion. First, we condemn the forceful removal of Muslim sisters’ Hijab and consider it an abuse to Muslims and blasphemy to Islam.”

The organisation added that if it is assumed that the perpetrators are not Muslims, it will not believe that during their education, from home training and childhood upbringing at family level through University education and in-service training, they have never learnt how to respect people’s religion and culture.

Meanwhile, the Islamic movement in another round of protest on Friday urged the police authorities to respect people’s religion and culture.

The nationwide protest took place in various cities across the country such as Abuja, Kano, Sokoto, Kaduna, Zaria, Yobe, Gombe,Bauchi, Jos, Katsina, Kebbi and Niger among others.

In Abuja, the protest kicked off at Banex Juma’at Mosque immediately after the Friday prayers and ended at the popular Banex junction.

In Sokoto, Kano, Kaduna and Katsina, many people joined the protest saying Hijab does not just belong to the Shiites Women.

Was it now u ppl suddenly found ur voices? Una never see anything yet.
POLS:

A prominent Islamic human rights organisation, the Muslim
Rights Concern (MURIC), on Saturday, August 17, accused the Kaduna state government led by Uba Sani of dragging back the northern region of Nigeria by a hundred years.

Specifically, the group criticised the Kaduna state government for allegedly ignoring "all the brilliant legal practitioners in the North" to pick a lawyer from the south-west region 'to prosecute El-Rufai'.

Prof. Akintola and El-Rufai share a warm relationship. MURIC's statement partly reads: “We are deeply perturbed by the pre-occupation of the Kaduna state government and its state assembly with the profiling of the immediate past governor of the state, Nasir El-Rufai. “Most disturbing is the manner the state government ignored all the brilliant minds in the legal profession in the whole North to pick a human rights lawyer from the South-West for the purpose of prosecuting El-Rufai."

" This is a slap in the face of not only that of legal practitioners in the North but the entire Northern population. It also constitutes a colossal waste of resources as well as an insult and a disservice to the whole North."

Politics / Re: The North Has Been Checkmated, And Peter Obi Must Not Help Them. by adeniyiemmanuel(m): 12:28am On Aug 10
HMM... BEAUTIFUL WRITE UP BRO THUMBS UP THIS MAKES A LOT OF SENSE!!!!
Penguin2:
Caveat: There's need to state that by 'north' here, I am referring to the northern mafias, Kaduna Mafia if you please, who have over the years constituted themselves as kingmakers of Nigeria whereby only the person they approve of can become president of Nigeria whether from their northern region or the south. So, by north, I'm not referring to the entire region nor the poor northern masses who are mere victims of the machinations of this mafia over the years.

Now that we have stated that, let's into the meat of this piece.

Any critical follower of politics in Nigeria will know that the high turnout of protesters in the north in the recently concluded #EndBadGovernance Protest was engineered by this northern mafia as a way of registering their frustration at how many powerless they've become since they conspired to hand power over to Tinubu; maybe because they thought he was frail and might go the Yaradua way but man seems to have gotten new life since he was sworn in.

Many may not have realized the game the north wanted to play in 2023 but I will mention it.

In 2023, this northern cabal wanted to retain power in the north through Atiku and the plan was to ensure that they make rubbish of the APC ticket to prevent a strong candidate from emerging so that Atiku's path will be smoother. This is why they wanted to useless the APC ticket by announcing Ahmed Lawan as consensus candidate. They knew nobody would vote Lawan which would leave Atiku as the most manageable option. But something happened.

Throughout their years of calculations and strategy before the 2023 elections, they never envisaged the Peter Obi. They never knew that a certain Peter Obi would go to a different party and take the eastern votes they were banking on for Atiku away from him.

When the Peter Obi wave became too much and the north saw that the Atiku project will no longer work, add Wike and his Asoebi boys’ shenanigans too, they were now faced with a choice of either allowing Peter Obi ride on his wave to victory or ‘deliver’ Tinubu, they chose Tinubu instead.

Why did they choose Tinubu?

Many factors contributed to them choosing Tinubu. First, Peter Obi is an Igbo man, a tribe they are scared of allowing get power for whatever fear they harbour. Again, Tinubu’s Muslim Muslim ticket, which was specifically chosen to deceive them and it worked, making them think they were doing Allah’s work by choosing Tinubu. Similarly, during campaigns, Tinubu seemed he was nearing his death. So, their calculation may have been that if he goes the way of Yaradua, then power will return to the region faster.

All these and other factors made them decide that Tinubu should have it and instruction was given as such which is why a character like Mahmoud Yakubu could do what he did because he was acting on instruction from his superiors already; that’s aside the money that may have exchanged hands also.

All of this is why the north feels Tinubu owes them.

Now, why are they north angry? You might ask.

1) Subsidy: Since Tinubu took power, he removed subsidy. When they talk about the vultures that were benefiting and feeding fat on subsidy payments, belive me when I trll you that most of them were northerners. Tinubu’s removal, or redirection, of subsidy payment has taken feeding bottle off their mouth and they will fight back.

2) Exchange Rate Unification: It’s common knowledge that northerners dominate the Bureau De Change market in Nigeria with claims having been made in that past that these men used to source their dollars directly from the CBN and resell at Black Market rate to make excessive profit at the expense of Nigerians. The exchange rate unification has taken food from a lot of northern Alhajis who are the real owners of these businesses.

3) Appointments: The north spent 8 years defending Buhari's nepotistic appointments and justifying them with the most irrational reasons ever heard. What they never imagined is that a time would come when they would be the ones crying against another person's nepotism. Yes, Tinubu has broken every nepotistic record set by Buhari with nearly 80% of the appointments he has made since he took power going to the Yoruba, and the north considers that an affront. They feel they deserved more from Tinubu for 'helping' him to power. Again, they feel only one of theirs can dare to be nepotistic as Buhari was. How dare a southerner?

4) Politically: Politically, Tinubu seems to have succeeded in keeping every member of that every circle away from his government like the likes of Elrufai, and they are not happy they are not inside. If anything, the reason somebody like Elrufai supported Tinubu was because he wanted to be Vice President. But with Tinubu shutting him out now, he has seen tge pathway to his presidency dimmed which would delay whatever agenda they want to achieve with power which they fail to achieve with Buhari.

5) Restructuring and Regionalism: If there’s anything the north hates, it’s the idea of Nigeria being restructured and the country going back to regionalism which they feel would greatly put them at a disadvantage as they are the biggest beneficiaries of the current dysfunctional structure. Now, during campaigns, Tinubu never said anything about restructuring but since he took power, we have seen documents flying around in the media space on how Nigeria is to be restructured with even a proposed return to regionalism. The presidency has never disowned this document which has heightened the fear of the north that their greatest fear might end up happening from someone they thought had no interest in that without realizing that they were simply played. Or maybe they have realized.

In a nutshell, the north was defeated at their own in 2023 and now they are looking for a way out.

In looking for this way out, they have started fraternizing with Peter Obi to try to convince him to be Atiku’s running mate in 2027 so that Atiku can hand over to him after 4 years.

But I write this Peter Obi to never make himself availble for such deal in 2027.

In 2027, the north must choose between Peter Obi or Tinubu.

If they fear Igbo man so much that they cannot allow him get to power then I don’t mind Southeast voting for Tinubu to continue in power. And once Tinubu eins his second tenure and has nothing to lose anymore, he would finish off everything he has eyes on - to ensure Nigeria is completed restructured with a return to regionalism.

So, in conclusion, in 2027, the north must choose between southern candiates and no southerner, not much Peter Obi, should help save them from the misery they got themselves into by themselves.

I’ve seen early signs of them trying to throw the Jonathan joker in 2027 but that’s story for another day as we watch events unfold.

Pengiun is a bird of reason!

Politics / Re: We’re Not As Wealthy As We Believe -budget Minister by adeniyiemmanuel(m): 10:32am On Aug 09
See as this one open mouth waaa... Dey yarn dust bunch of THIEFS!!!
CAkpos:
In a recent address at the launch of ActionAid Nigeria’s new country strategy paper titled “Citizens Action to End Poverty and Injustice 2024-2034,” Minister Bagudu emphasized that Nigeria’s ongoing underdevelopment cannot be attributed to any single administration.

The minister stressed that addressing the country’s challenges requires a united and concerted effort from all citizens.

Bagudu drew attention to the urgent need for Nigerians to acknowledge the nation’s current economic reality.

He likened this acknowledgment to a family conversation where everyone must recognize their financial constraints.

“We are not as rich as we think we are,” Bagudu remarked, pointing out that this realization should spur citizens to actively contribute to national development rather than passively rely on government interventions.

The minister further highlighted the importance of citizens actively engaging with government programs, not merely to support them but also to hold officials accountable.

“If all we have is anger at each other, we will never solve any problem,” he said, urging Nigerians to foster a culture of cooperation and constructive criticism.

Bagudu called for a collective effort to build a more just and equitable society where every individual’s contribution is valued.

He emphasized that the ultimate goal of social action should be inclusivity, ensuring that local economies benefit everyone.

“The ultimate aim of social action is to include all, and local economies can be made to include all,” Bagudu affirmed.

The event also featured a speech by Andrew Mamedu, the Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, who underscored the critical situation facing the nation.

He noted that 133 million Nigerians are living in multi-dimensional poverty, lacking both financial resources and access to essential services.
Mamedu stressed the need for immediate action, stating, “Hope and belief must be accompanied by action. This is the essence of our CSP.”

Mamedu outlined the four key actions of the new strategy—Organise, Act, Shift, and Thrive—designed to empower citizens to drive systemic change.

The strategy places a strong emphasis on human rights and community engagement. Mamedu also recognized the challenges faced by protesters in Nigeria, stressing the importance of supporting and amplifying their voices.

“This strategy is not just a plan; it is our pledge to act with urgency, integrity, and unwavering commitment,” Mamedu concluded, calling for collective efforts to bring about meaningful change in Nigeria.
