A professor of Community and Public Health Nutrition has sounded a note of warning to Nigerians over the consumption of barbecued beef popularly called Suya.

Consumers of barbecued beef popularly called “Suya” have been advised to always ensure that generous portions of onions, cabbage, tomatoes and other vegetables were eaten along with it.
Suya is generally made with skewered beef, ram, or chicken. Innards such as kidney, liver and tripe are also used.

The thinly sliced meat is marinated in various spices which include peanut cake, salt, vegetable oil and other flavourings, and then barbecued.
Ngozi Nnam, Professor of Community and Public Health Nutrition at the University of Nigeria,
Nsukka, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja.

Ms. Nnam said that there was a link between its consumption and increased risk of cancer, noting that consumption of suya garnished with onions and other vegetables has a strong cancer-lowering effect.


“Eating Suya can actually cause cancer. This comes from the reaction of meat and the smoke during Suya preparation which results in a toxic compound that can cause cancer.

“Smoking of the meat is what causes cancer. Some metabolites from food can cause cancer. What is important is to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables to increase antioxidants in the body.

“The antioxidants can neutralise or react with the toxic metabolite from food to prevent cancer,” she said.

According to her, Suya is good to eat with onions and cabbage because they react with the toxic substance produced by smoke to prevent cancer. “It is good to eat Suya with onions and other fruits and vegetables.’’

The nutritionist, however, urged Nigerians to consume more of fish than beef. She said that the major benefit of eating beef was that it provided needed protein for the individual.

“It is however healthier to eat fish than meat because some fish e.g. srumbia fish contain omega 6 fatty acid which is good for the body.

“Omega 6 fatty acid is also very good for infants because it is required for proper brain development.’’

In addition, she warned against the consumption of smoked fish, saying “again the problem with smoked fish is the toxic substance produced by the smoke. “If we can grill it, it will be better than smoking it,’’ she advised.

Ms. Nnam, also the President of Nutrition Society of Nigeria, said that the National Policy on Food and Nutrition has been implemented across the country.

“ The National Policy on Food and Nutrition was launched during the Nutrition Week in September 2016 by the Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari.
“After the launch, the policy has been domesticated and being implemented in different states of the federation.

The Ministry of Budget and National Planning is overseeing this activity with state nutrition officers,’’ she said.

The policy seeks to improve the nutritional status of all Nigerians, with particular emphasis on the most vulnerable groups including children, women, and the elderly.

People who have had "a religious experience" often report feelings of joy, peace and warmth, and new research has found that during these experiences, certain reward centers in the brain are activated.

The study found that, among devoutly religious people, spiritual feelings activate the same areas of the brain as other rewarding and pleasurable experiences, like love, sex and drugs.

"We're just beginning to understand how the brain participates in experiences that believers interpret as spiritual, divine or transcendent," study co-author Dr. Jeff Anderson, a neuroradiologist at the University of Utah School of Medicine, said in a statement .

"In the last few years, brain imaging technologies have matured in ways that are letting us approach questions that have been around for millennia."

In the study, the researchers analyzed the brains of 19 devout Mormons in their 20s and 30s who had completed 1.5 to two years of missionary service for the Mormon Church.

The participants spent an hour in a brain scanner, and were shown quotes and videos meant to evoke spiritual feelings.

For example, participants were shown passages from the Book of Mormon as well as videos produced by the Mormon Church.

They were also asked to pray in the scanner for 6 minutes. At several points during the session, participants were asked,

"Are you feeling the spirit?" (This is a phrase used in the Mormon Church to refer to feelings of religious joy.) The responses ranged from "not feeling" to "very strongly feeling."

The results showed that "feeling the spirit" was linked with activation of the nucleus accumbens, a brain region involved in processing feelings of reward .

This activation peaked about 1 to 3 seconds before participants said they were experiencing peak spiritual feelings (which they indicated with the press of a button).

Spiritual feelings were also linked with activation of a region called the medial prefrontal cortex, which is thought to be involved in judgment and moral reasoning, as well as activation of brain regions linked with increased attention and alertness.

The researchers noted that more studies, including those that look at people from different religions and cultures, are needed in order to identify other brain regions linked with religious experiences

Lea von Bidder, 26, president of Swiss-based firm Ava, said trying for a baby could be ‘a very stressful and frustrating experience’ for women. She claimed the Ava would allow them to ‘understand the signs their body is giving them’.

But Professor Adam Balen, chairman of the British Fertility Society, questioned whether it would help.

He said: “Sometimes these sorts of devices can just cause more stress by forcing people to have sex at a particular time, and that’s not really healthy.”

Couples hoping to conceive should simply have lots of sex throughout a woman’s cycle, he added, as ‘fresh’ sperm was best at fertilising the egg.

Manchester United already have by far the biggest club stadium in England, but are reportedly seriously exploring the possibility offurther expanding Old Trafford’s current 76,000 capacity.

According to Daily Mail, extensive work has already been carried out on the famous stadium in the Premier League era, and now, there are further plans to push the capacity up to 88,000.

Only Wembley Stadium, with a capacity of 90,000, is currently bigger in England, while an increase to 88,000 would see Old Trafford become second only to Barcelona’s iconic Camp Nou in terms of all club stadiums across Europe.

It is suggested that work would begin by adding 7,500 seats to the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand on the south side of the stadium, currently the smallest of the four stands.

Ever heard about the mystical miracle plant or the plant referred to as ‘the tree of life’?

A mouse has been given its freedom after it tackled a poisonous snake in a bid to save a fellow rodent at a zoo in China.

The two mice were served up as a live dinner for the snake at Hangzhou Zoo in Zhejiang province, eastern China.
Keeper Wen Shao said: "We always give the snakes live food and we put the two mice into the snake enclosure, but instead of trying to hide like they usually do one of the mice attacked the snake when it saw it trying to eat the other mouse.

"I have never seen anything like that before, usually the mice keep as far away from the snake as possible but this one caused a lot of damage.
"It was biting the snake on the head as the snake was trying to eat the first mouse."

He added that the mouse had deserved its freedom after putting up such a brave fight.

US President Donald Trump on Monday signed a decree barring US federal funding for foreign NGOs that support abortion, relaunching a battle that has long divided Americans.

It comes just two days after women led a massive protest march in Washington to defend their rights, including to abortion.

The decision to ban foreign aid to groups that lobby in support of abortion rights is certain to deepen concern among already apprehensive US family planning and women’s rights organizations.

Stenny Hoyer, a Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, sharply criticized Trump for using his first week in office “to attack women’s health.”

“It should be no surprise to the millions of women and men who gathered in protest this weekend across the country –- and around the world –- that Republicans are focused more on making it harder for women to access health care than on the serious economic and security challenges we face.”

The restrictions imposed Monday prohibit foreign nongovernmental organizations that receive US family planning assistance from using non-US funding to provide abortion services, information, counseling or referrals and from engaging in advocacy to promote abortion.

They were first put in place in 1984 by Republican president Ronald Reagan.
Later eliminated by Democratic president Bill Clinton, they were reinstalled by his Republican successor George W. Bush, and annulled again after Barack Obama took office.
