You are on point bro. I only use Nigeria Floating for convenience sake and nothing more and rather depend result from my local feed. I wonder whether some people understand and have record of their input when you see them claiming these feeds are the best.

The fact remains that most ingredients that makes feed float contain lesser nutrients.

I agree that some expensive foreign feeds/Nigeria Local floating are out there claiming what they are not, but is there fish no farmers association in Nigeria? What about Standard Organisation of Nigeria? What about numerous Research Institutes in Fisheries and Aquaculture in Nigeria? Where do we see their result of research on different fish feed?

Unless there is a movement among different fish association to carry-out test on all popular feeds in Nigeria and publish the result for fish farmers to consider before making his decision and see that SON take appropriate action against Feed companies that has been deceiving young entrants, the loss will continue.

You Are very correct. FCR depends not only on feed quality but also on water management And oxygen uptake by the fish. That where aeration comes into play. Most fish farmers don't aerate their ponds. There is not way u can get low FCR without aeration.

As for local naija floating feed, Most of the are made with spent grains that have had all the nutrient removed. Its all chaff, no nutrient for the fish to use.

Average kg after harvest is 800kg multiplied by 800 rate

To make better profits, its really not about the type of feed used, its more about its conversion to flesh when the fish consume it. We call it the feed conversion rate. Some expensive foreign feeds/ naija local floating we buy have low FCR so buying them is just like money down the drain. The fish will eat it but they will not grow fast. To reduce cost u have to increase FCR. Thats the only way

They rushed the food, and I observed some still have white whiskers and white patches on them. Do you suggest I still go ahead with the aquaceril or I should be patient.

What floating feed can you recommend and how frequently do I feed them?

You should give the aquaceril to kill the bacteria. On their skin and in their blood because they will drink the water. The Aquaceril will cause the white patches on their skin to disappear. You will treat them for 3 days the way I previously explained; half water drain for 3 days. Stop the water drain and mix the Aquaceril with their feed until the white patches disappear. This could take 1 to 2 weeks.

As per feeding. If you can get skreting or aquafeed, use it. Feed Once for the three days. Feed twice after then.

Because of the quantity of aquaceril you will need , after three days treating with aquaceril buy OTC. it's sold per kilogramme. You can use that to treat them after day 3. Mix with their feed.

Some had white coloration, i saw a dead one, whiskers and eyes already turned white.In total saw 3 dead fishes, two where at the base and one floating. I was advised by a friend into the business to drain the water to a low level and add 4 covers of bottled water formalin into a full big custard bucket with water. And i should sprinkle half container with salt in a small custard bowl and leave them for 3hours.

He advised i dont feed them till tomorrow morning. I am open to criticism if this is wrong.

I recently added dry almond leaves into the pond, i read it boosts their immune system...

From your explanation, the fishes have bacteria infection. The water you are using is the problem. What you should do is to drain the water to 1/4 of the pond and get aquaceril. Empty one pack and leave for 24 hrs. Afterwards drain the water and add another and leave for another 24hrs, slowly introduce feed, not too much. One the third day add another but make the pond water at half tank. Lemme know how it goes.

Please don't use formalin. It is too strong and will most definitely kill the fish. I'm talking from experience.

Drain and refill water in the afternoons only. Use borehole water

Hi everyone and masters, I have an issue here, my 8 weeks cat fish in a concrete pond have not been showing so much interest in eating.

I initially thought it was the water even though I constantly drain it slightly and refill little by little. And on saturdays I drain it down, not completely and refill.

In the past few days they have all been placing their heads in upright position and not showing so much interest in the food. Though some of them stomach looks like they ate.

The challenge i have is that the local feed i am giving them is a sinking feed, so I cannot tell if they eat beneath th.e water, but what was obtainable before, once i start feeding, they all come rushing down

I suspect they have a bacteria infection. However try giving them a little floating feed to check their response. Also if you can look closely at them, observe if there are whitish colourations on their bodies or if they have white whiskers.

Most likely the water you used is the problem. For hatching use borehole water preferably. Don't use tap or government water that contains chlorine. Also make sure you don't overfeed so that does not spoil the water quality. Lastly don't allow rain or any other water to mix with the tiny fingerlings because they are highly susceptible to temperature changes.

Not at all. It does not need any maintenance of any kind if properly setup. Getting original solar panels is the tricky bit. There is nothing as frustrating at having panels that don't charge efficiently. Solar power is far cheaper in this part of the world cause you have at least 10 hours of sunlight daily. If well setup you may as well dump NEPA and go solar 100%.

excelsiorfarm: op if a farmer does not have the resources, he can still do fish farming even without any technological input, but someone that uses an aerator is at an advantage of more healthy fishes, more time if water is extremely polluted b4 they begin to die etc. the bio filter comes in handy when there is challenge of water, drainage to say a few. As oxygen is important to fish farming, many neglect to know that the water temperature you subject your fishes to will determine their growth rate

It's advisable to use an aerator and have frequent water changes. It will help increase the field yield. You will not regret it.

that's where i bought from. A biofilter is not so necessary but an aerator is an absolute must. Dissolved oxygen levels is critical to fish growth. More D.O faster growth.

excelsiorfarm: there are different bio filters,as there is volks,there is mercedes,they have varying capacity of ponds they can service,thats why i ask if he can elaborate more & a bio filter is different from recirculatory system they make noise about,it is compact,easy to manage,good ones have warranty of as much as 2-3Years,it is recirculatory concept,but not bogus & doesnt

I use hozelocks biofilter and mine is for a fish density of 1500. But presently, I have just 400 fish in my pond and the biofilter struggles to make the water clean. in fact the water can't get clean cos I can't run it 24/7. Also u need high loads of beneficial bateria (aerobic) in the pond on order to metabolize fish wastes (ammonia) into nitrates. Without adequate oxygen in the pond, the biofilter will not work well. An aerator is an absolute must if u are to use a biofilter and they both must be on 24/7.

I use a biofilter in my farm and I have to say that to make it work efficiently, u need to keep it on 24/7.Also when u have a lot of fish in a pond, it can't make the water very clean. It will still look cloudy. To recycle water for use in ponds, u will need to pump the smelly water from the pond into a holding tank where u can use alum as coagulant and aerate the water before it can be reused.
