Politics / G7 Provides President Muhammadu Buhari With List Of Corrupt Nigerians by AdigunOAP: 12:34pm On Jun 19, 2015

STRONG indications have emerged of world power's resolve to assist the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, in its avowed fight against corruption, by reportedly providing him with unimpeachable pieces of evidence and information about allegedly corrupt Nigerians in public offices and where their alleged funds and questionable property are domiciled abroad.

Our Source was told by a close government source that a list of the alleged corrupt Nigerians, including elected public officials, appointed officials and their collaborators in the private sector, was said to have been made available to Buhari while attending the G7 meeting in
Germany.

Looted public funds reportedly stashed abroad were said to be included in the package the world leaders reportedly made available to Buhari, with a commission to recover such funds as an encouraging step in getting
global assistance on the issues on his "wish list."

The top government source disclosed that the president was
unequivocally told by his hosts that the recovery of the looted funds must be seen to be religiously done by his administration before their
home countries and other global bodies could be financially supportive of Nigeria, as well as rendering help in other areas Buhari was seeking their assistance.

The said list reportedly contained names of serving and past governors, past ministers and government contractors, especially in the oil and gas
sector.

Apart from banks where the alleged slush funds were domiciled, locations of assets suspected to have been illegally acquired were reportedly listed
in the said list, which was said to have been a product of years of
painstaking discreet investigation abroad.

A lot of assets allegedly illegally acquired by these public officials were said to have been largely traced to South Africa and Dubai.
An immediate past governor of a state in the South was said to have been linked to a multi-billion Naira property in South-Africa, where four separate huge buildings were allegedly bought by him at a go.

With property being reportedly registered by nationality in another country, a simple search of letter "N" was said to have brought up names of Nigerians with massive property investment.
Those property, according to the source, are now of rock-bottom value, compared to the huge funds invested in them.

It was learnt that in achieving the desire of killing corruption in the
country, a total overhaul of the existing anti-corruption bodies would be done for a more effective operation.
The government source noted that though the planned merger of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) was almost a certainty, the focus of the operation of the amalgamated body might be a bit different from what it used to be.

According to the source, greater attention might be focused on recovery of looted funds instead of prosecuting and jailing offenders, though the latter would always be a part of the anti-corruption crusade to serve as a
deterrent.

Our Source was told that a situation where someone would go to jail for a couple of years to return to enjoy the looted funds would not serve the interest of the justice system, adding that all proceeds of crime must be taken off the offenders.

It was further learnt that one major area of corruption that would be focussed was "presumptive" asset declaration, whereby government officials declare assets they don't have in anticipation of acquiring them
illegally while in office.

Lagos lawyer, Femi Falana, is reportedly tipped to head the planned management team of the hybrid anti-corruption body.
He had earlier been projected for the Attorney General of the Federation position alongside Chief Niyi Akintola, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu and the immediate past Lagos State governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, all from the
South-West, while Prince Lateef Fagbemi from the North-Central was also said to be interested in the job.

Politics / APC Crisis: PDP Members Are Rejoicing Too Early - Yakubu Dogara by AdigunOAP: 3:09pm On Jun 18, 2015

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has warned the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, against rejoicing
over the crisis within the All Progressives Congress, APC, because the governing party has the capacity to overcome its challenges and therefore would not allow the PDP snatch power from it come 2019.

The Speaker who disclosed this yesterday noted that politicians within the fold of the PDP are basking in the euphoria of the heat generated by the recent contest for leadership posts in the National Assembly and hoping
that such will give the opposition party an edge over the APC.
Stressing that those with such mindset are only deceiving themselves, Dogara asserted that opposition politicians are rejoicing too early about their party's chances of retaking power at the Federal level come 2019.

He may be apparently referring to Deputy Senate President, Ike
Ekweremadu, who following his return as the number two man in an APC dominated Senate, had last week boasted that his "emergence was a sign of the PDP reclaiming what was taken from it by the APC in 2019".

The Speaker laughed off this claim while playing host to a delegation of the defunct 2014 Presidential Primaries Committee of the APC which paid him a courtesy call in his office, where he insisted that the APC was resolute in delivering the change it promised Nigerians.
He assured that the dust raised by the contest in the National Assembly for the leadership of the two chambers which caused uproar in the party, was not enough issue that will destabilize the governing party.

Dogara posited that what transpired in the party, before, during and after the bitter contest was merely a conflict of ideas by various interests involved in the process of selecting presiding officers for the Legislature.
"We are here to work and we don't have any reason to fail. We can't fail.

That's why I pick holes in the ambition of those who have their eyes fixed on 2019".
"We didn't get here because of 2019. If we do the right things and the people see results, 2019 will take care of itself. We can't fail because we are here to bring change," he said.

While urging members of the APC to stop seeing the misunderstanding and conflict of interest precipitated by the contest as crises, the Speaker
stressed that the party has the capacity to manage every member and their interests.

"People talk about crisis in the party, I don't see any crisis. Even if there is, the Party has the capacity to deal with whatever issue pertaining to its members and their interests," he stated.

Politics / Court Fails To Give Judgement In Femi Fani-kayodes Case by AdigunOAP: 1:33pm On Jun 18, 2015

Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court, Lagos, on
Thursday failed to give judgment in the money laundering trial involving a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, due to the absence of the prosecution counsel, Mr. Festus Keyamo.

The judge chose not to deliver the verdict in Keyamo's absence, although the lawyer was represented in court.

Fani-Kayode's lawyer, Chief Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), urged the judge to go on and deliver the judgment since it was ready.

He said the law did not make it mandatory that a prosecuting counsel must be present before a judgment is delivered in a criminal case.
The senior advocate said even if someone is holding a watching brief for the prosecuting counsel, the judgment could still be delivered.

But Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia insisted that she was more comfortable reading the judgment in Keyamo's presence.
She stood the case down for 10 minutes to enable the lawyer from Keyamo's chambers, Mr. Festus Afeiyodion, to confirm from his principal the day he would be available.

About an hour later, Afeiyodion told the judge that Keyamo requested for a short stand-down to enable him come, as he was handling another matter elsewhere.

"Mr. Keyamo asked that the matter be stood down till 1.30pm. By then, he would be through and be here personally. In the alternative, he suggested that any other day could be chosen and he will be here," Afeiyodion said.

Adedipe, after briefly conferring with Fani-Kayode, said they would not mind waiting till 1.30pm.
However, the judge said she would prefer not to deliver the judgment under pressure as the day would have been far gone by that time.

Apparently to prove that the judgment was indeed ready, she displayed a typewritten material on her tablet, saying she prefers to read it out at a convenient time.

Fani-Kayode was accused of making a transaction exceeding N500, 000 on September 20, 2006, which was not done through a financial institution.
He was alleged to have accepted N2.1 million in cash, which was paid into his personal bank account by his aide, Supo Agbaje, while he served as Minister of Culture and Tourism.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the alleged offence which the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said contravenes the Money Laundering Act.

Politics / Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko Elected Chairman Of PDP Governors Forum by AdigunOAP: 12:49pm On Jun 17, 2015

Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State has been elected Chairman of PDP Governors Forum.

Governor Mimiko takes over the leadership of the forum from former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr Godswill Akpabio who is now a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Five out of the 13 governors forming the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors' Forum on Tuesday night failed to attend the meeting of the governors in Abuja, where Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State was elected chairman of the forum.

Mimiko had in October 2014, dumped the Labour Party (LP) on which platform he was elected governor to the PDP.

The five governors who were absent at the meeting which ended on Wednesday were Governors Hassan Dankwambo of Gombe State, Ayodele
Fayose of Ekiti State, Nyesom Wike of Rivers, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta and Professor Ben Ayade of Cross River State.

Those in attendance were Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, Capt. Idris Wada (Kogi), Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu),
Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom) and Darius Ishaku (Taraba).
The deputy governor of Bayelsa State, Rear Admiral John Jonah represented the state governor at the meeting.

This decision was announced by the Abia State Governor, Mr Okezie
Ikpeazu, after a meeting of the governors in Abuja that lasted about four hours.

As part of the resolutions reached at the meeting, the governors also
condemned the relocation of the Electoral Tribunals of Rivers, Taraba and Akwa Ibom States to Abuja, Nigeria's capital city.

The All Progressives Congress had requested that the Akwa Ibom State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal should be relocated to Abuja.
Their request was granted by the President of the Court of Appeal.
The party had rejected the result declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which proclaimed the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Udom Emmanuel, winner.

It alleged that the election was marred by widespread electoral
malpractices, disenfranchisement of its supporters and a declaration of votes for the PDP in violation of the provisions of the Independent
National Electoral Commission that required that all votes cast be duly accredited.

"We will pool together, do everything possible to engage the Presidency and APC in constructive manner," Olusegun Mimiko said.

The PDP presently has 13 governors.

Politics / Jacob Zuma Assured AU Omar Al-bashir Would Not Be Arrested - Robert Mugabe by AdigunOAP: 6:00pm On Jun 16, 2015

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma gave the African Union
summit assurances that Sudan's president Omar al-Bashir would
not be arrested, Zimbabwe's president Robert Mugabe has said.

Responding to questions by journalists following the close of the AU summit in Sandton just before midnight on Monday, Mugabe said because Bashir was a wanted man, NGOs were going to
court to try force his arrest.

Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
"This is not the headquarters of the ICC and we do not want it in
this region at all," Mugabe said.

"There is a view that we must distance ourselves from the ICC,
but unfortunately the treaty that set it up was done not by the
AU, but by individual countries," he said.
"But those who signed the treaty are now regretting. We didn't
sign it as Zimbabwe. We won't subject ourselves to justice
outside our country's borders."

He said NGOs were used by outsiders to go to court to force
government to arrest Bashir, "because he is a wanted man by the ICC".
Mugabe said in court "not all judges think like we do", and they
might dislike "freedom fighters" or the way things are done in a
certain country, he said.

Summit 'no different to others'

AU Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma was a little less outspoken, saying the AU had nothing to say about Bashir's attendance because it was within his rights to do so.
"This summit here is no different from any other AU summit. This
is not a bilateral meeting, it is a multilateral organisation and
when a country hosts it, it does so according to the rules of the AU and not according to the rules of the countries," she said.

Dlamini-Zuma said various host countries signed agreements with
the AU on the hosting of the summit. "This venue up to now," she said with reference to the Sandton Convention Centre where the conference was held, "is an AU venue, it is not a South African
venue," she said.

"It may be located on the geographical space of South Africa, but is an AU venue."
She added that the AU could not have "any real relationship" with
the ICC because it wasn't a state but a continental body.

Bashir on Monday slipped out of the country despite a court
ordering that he should stay until the case by civil society about
his arrest was heard. He left while these court proceedings were still in progress.

Politics / Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed Signs Four Bills Into Law by AdigunOAP: 7:40pm On Jun 15, 2015

Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed

The Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed has signed for four bills into law with a pledge to redouble efforts to improve the welfare of the people despite the downturn in the national economy.

The new laws are: A Law to Amend The Environmental Sanitation Law, A Law to Repeal the Kwara State Transport Corporation, A Law to Amend the Cooperative Societies Law, and A Law to Amend The Kwara State Debt Securities Issuance Law.

Speaking while signing the bills into law, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed said he would continue to initiate and implement new initiatives aimed at ensuring good governance and making life better for all residents in the state.
According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Dr Muideen Akorede, the state governor acknowledged the challenges confronting the state as a result of dwindling allocation from the federal government and assured that he will work harder to
cushion the population from the impact of the economic downturn as much as possible.

Governor Ahmed enjoined the people to support his administration to rapidly develop the state, stressing that that all hands must be on deck to create a prosperous Kwara State for the benefit of all.

Alhaji Ahmed said that while his administration has no intention to
impose fresh taxes, all efforts would be made towards efficient revenue collection to raise funds for his administrations people-oriented projects.

These projects, according to him, include a 100 megawatt Independent Power Projects, 2000 New Classrooms, the remodelling of an additional five general hospitals, and the implementation of new water projects across the state.

Politics / Why Muhammadu Buharis Ministerial List Is Delayed - APC Chairmain, John Oyegun by AdigunOAP: 7:19pm On Jun 15, 2015

Chief John Oyegun

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has said that the Ministerial list of President Muhammadu Buhari is being delayed because the President is conducting a thorough check on the background of those he wants to appoint into his government.

Oyegun told newsmen at the party secretariat that the appointment of Ministers was the prerogative of the President, adding that the party was
interested in the ability of the people he is appointing to bring about ideas that will help achieve his set objectives and deliver on what he want.

The APC Chairman said the President is open to picking people from all works of life as Ministers especially if those people subscribe passionately to his agenda to move the country forward, whether they are members of the party or not.

He said: "There is absolutely no dispute between the party and the president. We agreed that we shall use all manner of people: politicians, technocrats, all manner of people, even if not politicians, who can deliver and who subscribe passionately to the agenda of the president, to move
this country forward, irrespective of where the people come from;
irrespective of whether the person is a card-carrying members of the
party.

"What is important is the qualification of the person and the ability of the person to deliver on the ideas of Mr. President. What we are interested in is the ability of the people to bring up the ideas that will help Mr. President achieve the set objectives and the ability to deliver on what the President wants.

"Secondly, this is an executive function and the President has the right to consult as widely as possible. This means he might pick people within the party and people outside the party.
"It is a prerogative the President should exercise and we cannot question that. We are quite happy about the way he is proceeding".

Yakubu Dogara

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has appointed Jerry Manwe as his Chief of Staff.
A letter of appointment with reference No. NASS/SPK/MGT/VOL.I/002
dated 15th June, 2015, addressed to the Clerk National Assembly and signed by the Speaker, conveyed Mr. Manwe's appointment as his chief of staff.

Mr. Manwe, a staunch member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for years, made a surprise defection to the Social Democratic Party in January.
He blamed his decision on alleged manipulation of the last primaries of the PDP in his home state of Taraba.

Born on June 26, 1958 in Karim Lamido, Taraba State, Mr. Manwe was first elected as member of the House of Representatives in 1991, and later in 2007 and 2011.

He is the immediate past chairman of House of Representatives committee on Electoral Matters and had chaired House Committees on Finance and Economic Planning, Interior and Communications.

The new chief of staff was also a Commissioner of Housing and Urban Development in Taraba State between 1999-2001, member Christians Pilgrim Board 2001-2003, Chairman, National Commission for Colleges of
Education, 2005-2007.

He attended Lau Primary School between 1966-1973, Government
Secondary School Jalingo 1974-1979, Federal Polytechnic Mubi, 1984-1986 and Federal University of Technology Yola.

My View On Sudan President Omar AlBashir that flies out of South Africa. #GiveAfricaAVoice...

I don’t think #ICC is doing the right thing ordering South African
government to make the arrest of Sudanese president for the alleged
war crime. They should do it themselves and not trying to bring war between two African countries, besides, what have ICC done about the killing of the innocent as a results of George Bush personal war against
Saddam Hussein in Iraq or the recent one in Libya against Muammar Gaddafi.

All these wars brought by Wests had claimed hundreds of millions of innocent lives and have to be stopped but what have the
ICC done about it ? I can say here that ICC is working directly or
indirectly for American overnment to bring down countries that refuse to agree to their selfish policies, expecially, Islamic states. Let their be peace and it is time to understand that the world is having only one
problem, and that problem is United State of America

Politics / No Need For International Force In Boko Haram Fight - President Jonathan by AdigunOAP: 8:24am On Apr 17, 2015

Abuja - Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday told the United Nations his country would not need the help of an international force in the fight against Boko Haram.

The outgoing leader said in a statement he wanted the UN to
focus instead on helping to rebuild communities and assist those affected by the six-year Islamist insurgency.

Jonathan made the remarks after meeting with the special
representatives of the UN secretary-general for west and central Africa, Mohammed Ibn Chambas and Abdoulaye Bathily, the statement said.

The UN refugee agency has said that 1.5 million people have been
displaced by Boko Haram violence in northern Nigeria, while more
than 13 000 people have been killed.

Jonathan said that with the support of troops from Chad, Niger and Cameroon, the Nigerian military had in recent months
regained most of the towns and villages seized by the Islamist
militants in the northeastern states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.

'Final push'

The Nigerian military has "commenced a final push to take the last stronghold of the insurgents in Sambisa Forest" in Borno state, the statement quoted him as saying.

It is believed that most of the 219 schoolgirls abducted by Boko
Haram from Chibok in Borno state a year ago are being held in
the forest.

Chambas, a former head of west African regional bloc ECOWAS,
told Jonathan that the UN team was visiting the countries
affected by the Boko Haram insurgency, which also includes
Chad, Cameroon and Niger.

He reaffirmed the UN's readiness to support the ongoing efforts
by Nigeria and its neighbours to end the insurgency.
