The World Bank has approved $611 million to support the Nigeria government in tackling the rising statistics of out-of-school children, who are currently put at about 10.5 million. The World Bank Education Specialist and Consultant, Adebayo Solomon, stated this in Abuja at the 2017/2018 annual school census exercise. The exercise will run across the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Solomon said the step by the World Bank was to support the Federal and state governments in their efforts to foster inclusion in education, which is in consonance with the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan of the Federal Government. He noted that the funds would be provided through the Better Education Service Delivery for All Programme, which was aimed at bringing out-of-school children into the classrooms. He said, “We are working with the National Bureau of Statistics to ensure that some data is verified. Immediately there is verification, each school will collect $30 dollars, and each state government will collect $100,000.” The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who inaugurated the census exercise in Abuja, said the data was necessary for the delivery of quality and all-inclusive education in the country. Adamu explained that there would be simultaneous commencement of enumeration of all schools, pupils, teachers and facilities in the basic and post-basic school levels in 36 states and the FCT. The minister decried the failure of some state governments, agencies of government and private schools to comply effectively with the enumeration exercise in the previous years, urging them to diligently adhere to the guidelines in the present year. He said, “I will also urge for cooperation and full participation of the military, para-military and private schools, both registered and unregistered, almajiri centres, and integrated Koranic schools in this exercise so that we can explore and improve all school environments in order to begin to solve the problem of out-of-school children.” Source: https://nigeriannewszone..com.ng/2018/02/world-bank-approves-611m-to-assist.html

Price checks at Mile 12, Whitesand, Iddo and Oko Oba markets in Lagos on Monday, revealed that the drop in prices was due to the bumper harvest of agricultural produce. A basket of tomatoes, which previously sold for N15,000 now goes for N8,000 while red pepper (tatashe) now cost N8000 compared to its previous price of N14,000 a basket. A basket of chilli pepper (rodo) also reduced from N18,000 to N10,000 and a jute bag of onions, which previously cost N30,000, now goes for N20,000. A 25-litre of vegetable oil, which previously sold for N11,500, now cost N10,700, palm oil decreased from N11,000 to N10,300, while a measure of garri now cost N400. However, the price of a 50-kilogramme bag of rice ranged between N13,500 to N17,000, depending on the brand while a measure of beans cost N1,500. The spokesman for Mile 12 Market Traders Association, Mr Femi Odusanya, attributed the price drop to the ongoing harvest season for most of the produce. “Over 20 per cent of the annual four million metric tonnes of tomatoes produced in the country is supplied to Mile 12 Market annually and redistributed to over 400 markets in Lagos and Ogun State and six ECOWAS countries. “About 200, 000 metric tonnes of the 800,000 metric tonnes of tomatoes annually supplied to Mile 12 Market get wasted due to postharvest losses. “Presently, the supply of the produce is more than the demand because farmers commenced harvest in December and there would be surplus in the market until April when the harvest season would end. http://globalnaijablog..com/2017/12/prices-of-tomatoes-pepper-onions-drop.html |
As the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) continues its one week strike, the West African Student Union (WAFU) has asked the Federal Government to settle all outstanding agreements with both teaching and non-teaching university lecturers to enable them to return to classes as soon as possible. The students also called for adequate funding of the education sector in 2018, in order to end the incessant face-off between the Federal Government and lecturers of tertiary institutions just as it has given to other sectors of the economy. President of WAFU, Zacchaeus Maikudi speaking in Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria over the weekend lamented the negative effects of the current strike by the Non Academic staff of universities on the students. He said it is high time the Federal Government deploy adequate resources to the sector, to address its endemic problems. According to him, poor education funding had left the system with myriads of problems with negative impact on quality and standard of education in the country. The Students Union Leader, further stressed that sound and qualitative education will only be provided if the gaps in learning facilities and welfare of staff are properly addressed through efficient and effective funding. “We know that the Federal Government has been trying in tackling issues that have to do with ASUU strike, SSANNU strike and so on. We believe that the government is trying to see the end of all these strikes, because we had the information that some academic staff have received their earn allowances. So the only contradiction is that of the non-academic staff union. Our appeal to the federal government is to see how they can reach out to those non-academic staff Union members to see how education in this country will have a smooth running. “We are eager to graduate, our younger ones are also coming into the system, and we want to see them prosper. http://globalnaijablog..com.ng/2017/12/students-lament-over-incessant-nasu.html

Original Sufferhead (1981) This song describes the problems and sufferingsthat abound in Africa as a continent, despite its richresources. He condemns the ‘big big man’ and‘white man’ for taking up everything and leavingnothing but suffer and anguish for the averageAfrican man. This song, released over 20 years ago sadly stillapplies greatly. The economic disparity betweenAfrica and other continents is displayed in the factthat basic resources like food, water, electricity andthe likes are still unavailable to a large number ofpeople living in this part of the world. Suchdisparities are even found within countries, wherewe have the rich getting richer and the poor gettingpoorer. 2. Suffering and Smiling (1977) Fela describes the life of the average Nigerian whois constantly suffering, but smiling through the pain, believing in the rewards that await them in theafterlife due to the teachings of religious leaders, who themselves live the most lavish lives, enjoyingthe so-called earthly pleasures. He warns people toopen their eyes to this injustice and stop beingblind followers of religion.Things haven’t changed much today, as people stillblindly follow religion (and religious leaders),without necessarily understanding its true meaning. 3. International Thief Thief (I. .) (1980) Fela uses the abbreviation of International Telephone& Telegraph (IT&T) to directly attack the company’sCEO, Moshood Abiola, and other politicians likeObasanjo who continuously betray the continent andtheir fellow Africans in their bid to get rich off thewhite man’s wealth. This song is relevant in today’s world as seen inthe violence that goes on in the Niger Delta as aresult of the insufficient resources and recognitionthat the region is given despite being the majorsupplier of oil and the bulk of the county’s wealth.Politicians are still looting, extorting and selling outtheir people in their bid to get richer. 4. Authority Stealing (1980) This song, like may others, talks about how thegovernment steals and loots the country’s resourceson a daily and goes unpunished, while the pettythief gets killed and burned on a daily basis. Forhim, the people in authority are just civilized thieveswho get away with their crimes because of theirposition. Our government still steals from us and feeds uslies and we let them get away with it. The pettythief gets thrown in jail while the political robbersremain scot free and given liberty to continuelooting. 5. Coffin for Head of State (1981) This song also condemns politicians. Here, hespeaks about the corruption that abounds inreligion, especially by hypocritical leaders likeObasanjo and Yar’adua. These leaders were themost corrupt people in the world, killing andstealing from innocent people, yet they openlycondemn such activities and hide behind Christianityand Islam.Today, we still see a great deal of corruption andhypocrisy in the guise of leadersgip and religion. Our leaders are still stealing from us, but yet are thequickest to attend church programs and quote bibleverses. 6. Beasts Of No Nation (1989) This song talks about the many unusual happeningsin the country and how the citizens all behave likecrazy people. It touches political, economic, socialmatters and talks about the silence of the Nigeriapeople against government oppression and brutalitywhile speaking up against apathy in foreign nationslike South Africa. According to him, these could onlyhappen in a crazy world. This song remains relevant today as the samehypocrisy and silence in the face of governmentinjustice is still the order of the day in our belovedcountry and continent as a whole. 7. Yellow Fever (1971) In this song, Fela warns about the dangers of skinbleaching that was becoming a trend for women. He lists the many unappealing aspects of bleachingand tells women that they were better off leavingtheir skin in its natural form.Today, bleaching has become even more rampantthan in the times of Fela. According to the WorldHealth Organization, Nigeria has the highest numberof women in the world who use skin-lighteningproducts. 8. Teacher Don’t Teach Me Nonsense (1980) This song highlights the fact that the white manseems to be living our lives for us, while they maketheir own decisions based on their culture andtradition. The white man, instead of condemning thebad leadership that goes on here, overlooks themwhile doing the exact opposite in their owncountries. He condemns the so-called democracy and begsAfricans to open their eyes and realize that they arebeing misled and stolen from.Today, instead of drawing away from the chains ofcolonialism, we still rely on foreign countries to helpus make some of our major decisions and try toimitate every aspect of their lives, forgetting ourcultures and traditions in the process. 9. Colonial Mentality (1977) He speaks about the fact that Africans have colonialmentality and still live in the past despite havinggained independence. They embrace everythingforeign and believe theirs to be inferior, from basicthings like food and clothes down to their namesand religious practices. This song is still very relevant today, as Africans ingeneral would rather purchase foreign madeproducts and would use foreign names instead oftheir traditional ones. 10. Confusion Break Bone (1990) This song talks about the confusion that abides inthe country and the lack or proper organisation. Histone here sounds sadder and more resigned to thefact that things might never get better for thecountry. He highlights all the problems he hadmentioned in his earlier songs and says thatnothing has changed and wonders at the insanity ofthings.Nothing has changed today. The country is still in apermanent state of disorderliness and disunity. Thegovernment still gets away with being corrupt andunjust, and the innocent man still gets punished forcrimes committed. source: http://globalnaijablog..com.ng/2017/08/10-fela-songs-that-are-still-relevant.html

It was around 1:00am on Friday when a robber came to steal this student hand bag. It was said that after the two ladies (living in that room) were asleep, the robber began to tear the net of the room in a manner which no one can hear as everywhere was silent. Then the robber brought in a long stick and pulled 2 purses out successfully but unfortunately for the robber, there was no money in the 2 purses which made him angry and threw them away. He then saw a handbag and while pulling it out the two ladies woke up and shouted "Thief" he then hurry up to force the bag out (breaking a louvres) and ran away with the handbag. See photos below

A groom-to-be identified as Adakole who attempted suicide at the news of accounts frozen by MMM organizers has opened up on his ordeal. Speaking on his ordeal on a radio programme, Weathering the Storm with Naomi De Diva on 92.1 Vision FM Abuja on Tuesday, December 20, the young man said contrary to the report, he invested N750,000 in the scheme against the N350,000 that was widely reported. It was reported earlier that Adakole, a native of Ai Okpe in Okpokwu LGA of Benue state whose wedding is slated for December 28 had invested N300 thousand into the scheme last month and was expecting to get his 30 per cent income before his wedding. Adakole, admitted that he had earlier made profits from the scheme. He said: “I came to Abuja here few months back in preparation for my wedding and my friend introduced me to the MMM thing. He told me about the benefit involved, though I was a bit hesitant about it but he succeeded in convincing me to register under him. “To be honest, I initially invested 20k into the scheme and I got 30 per cent the following month. The following month, I rendered help of N50k and I still got 30 per cent commission and my full investment back. “This time, I believed it was real and I decided to increase the money. Before then, my fiancée had warned me against it. So I went to my cooperative to obtain a loan and they gladly gave thinking it was for my wedding. I put in N750k last month, hopping than it would yield 30 per cent income this month only to wake up one morning to discover that my account has been suspended. “To be sincere, the best option I had then was to take my life, because I had thought of how I am going to face my woman. I didn’t even know when I took the insecticide. It was my guy, Fred who rescued me. My wedding is around the corner, I have been saving the money ahead of the wedding only to end up that way.

A 56-year-old man of God, Prophet Taiwo Oluboyode, has been arrested by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly impregnating his 16-year-old daughter and giving her some concoctions to terminate the pregnancy. Vanguard reports that Prophet Oluboyode who owns a white garment church in Odode, Idanre area of the state, is currently in police custody and has confessed that he is responsible » for his daughter’s seven-month-old pregnancy and was pushed into temptation by the devil. But residents of the town think otherwise as they believed he must have carried out the act to renew his spiritual powers as it was realized that Prophet Oluboyode’s church located at Oke-Ijebu Street in the town, always records high traffic of miracle- seeking worshippers from far and near on a regular basis. A source close to the church revealed that the prophet is a specialist in bathing women in streams to ward off evil spirits and those tormented by spiritual husbands and preventing who prevent them from getting married or having babies. Reports have it that the suspect lives alone with the daughter after the wife left him years back and all efforts by the estranged wife to take her daughter along with her were thwarted by the father who insisted that he needed her around to run errands and take care of him in the interim. A family source also hinted that the suspect had refused to remarry after the wife left and had preferred sleeping with his daughter instead. It was also gathered that the victim had stopped going to school when signs that she is pregnant was becoming evident while her schoolmates who went to look for her were told by the father that she had moved over to Lagos to continue with her education. Police sources said that when the girl became pregnant for her father and informed him, he allegedly prepared some concoctions for her to drink to terminate the pregnancy but the baby refused to be flushed out. It was when Prophet Oluboyode contemplated smuggling the victim out of the house to a private clinic for an abortion that she refused and threatened to raise an alarm. The suspect then instructed the victim to stay indoors to avoid suspicion from church members and their neighbours but one of the neighbours who saw the girl with a protruding stomach, raised the alarm and the prophet was arrested.
