The latest development by the Premier League authorities is bringing the current broadcast arrangements to a halt. The league board has decided to change what has been a norm for the fans since the League was continued from lockdown; every game had been broadcasted live by Sky Sports and BT Sport without these broadcasters charging viewers an additional cost.

With the latest decision by the board, only half of all matches will be available for the standard subscription price of live viewing while the other games would cost an extra fee for viewers.

The additional cost sums up the cost to £14.95 and according to The Times, the profits made from the subscription will be going to the clubs after the broadcasters must have taken their shares from the subscription fees to cover their costs.

The former Red Devils’ player and Sky Sports pundit – Gary Neville is one of the critics that is not pleased with the present decision made by the Premier League. On his Twitter handle, Gary wrote: “This is a really bad move by the Premier League to charge £14.95 for single matches that have been shown free for 6 months.”

In the statement made by the Premier League, the usual five matches per round would continually be in broadcast as it has been before the pandemic. In further statement, the Premier League stated: “In addition, the five matches per round not already selected will be made available to supporters on a pay-per-view basis, accessed via BT Sport Box Office and Sky Sports Box Office platforms.”

The Swiss and Liverpool’s midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has tested positive for coronavirus according to a result released in the early hours of Tuesday, the 6th October. Shaqiri’s case was confirmed in Switzerland while in preparation for his national friendly match against Croatia on Wednesday and also the UEFA Nations League fixtures.

The Swiss Football Association made this known in a statement as follows:
“Xherdan Shaqiri has tested positive for COVID-19. In consultation with the health authorities, he is in isolation. The strict protective measures and requirements of UEFA for national teams in accordance with the ‘UEFA Return to Play Protocol’ have been strictly adhered to. Based on this, clarifications are currently underway with the local health authorities about how to proceed.”

The announcement of the 28-year-old coronavirus case makes him the third Liverpool player to have tested positive to the disease aside from Thiago Alcantara and Sadio Mane. The player has now been placed in self-isolation to ensure his treatment and prevention of the further spread of the disease. Therefore, he would no longer be able to play for Switzerland in the international fixtures.

It should be recalled that Liverpool’s manager Jürgen Klopp had previously stated his worry concerning the release of his players for international matches during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said in the statement: “I don’t want to sound disrespectful about how other countries are doing it but this is the place that we know and we know how we are dealing with it. So, I am slightly concerned because it is difficult to be in contact with all FAs all over the world.

Wayne Rooney, the former Man. United’s star has suggested an option for his old club’s pursuit after Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho.

Jadon Sancho has been one of the club’s top-most signing priority since the commencement of this summer’s transfer window and all steps made towards having the player come to Old Trafford has proven abortive.

With the club making a final plan to have Sancho come to England before the transfer window closes tomorrow, the action seems awkward to Rooney.

Manchester United’s unreleased third kit has been spotted on sale in Australia, despite no official confirmation from Adidas.

The German kit manufacturer released both the home and away kits in time for United‘s pre-season tours but left fans waiting to see what color the third strip would be.

Images of the kit were leaked after appearing in the Premier League handbook for 2019/20 and now eagle-eyed fans have spotted the unreleased jersey on the shelves in Australia.

Footballer Emiliano Sala, who died in a plane crash over the English Channel, had been exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide, a report has revealed.

Sala and pilot David Ibbotson crashed on 21 January when travelling to Cardiff from the French city of Nantes.

Toxicology tests on Sala’s body showed CO levels in his blood were so great it could have caused a seizure, unconsciousness or a heart attack.

Mr Ibbotson, from Crowle, North Lincolnshire, has still not been found.

But it is likely he would also have been exposed to carbon monoxide,

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi bagged his first ever goal against Chelsea to salvage a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Lagos lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, speaks on the controversial deportation of the leaders of Southern Cameroun, some of whom he described as naturalised Nigerians and led by Ayuk Julius Tabe, from Nigeria.

The Cameroon government announced recently that leaders of the Anglophone movement, led by Mr Julius Ayuk Tabe in Nigeria, were handed over to Cameroon. How did this happen?

It is true that a number of Cameroonian refugees and asylum seekers, who were illegally arrested and detained by the Federal Government, were arrested and deported from Nigeria to Cameroon on Friday, January 26, 2018. When we received information of the plan to deport them, we rushed to the Federal High Court to stop the illegal plan.

We also reached out to the Comptroller-General of Immigration, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the United Nations Commissioner for Refugees in Nigeria. As soon as the Commission confirmed the information, it dispatched a letter to the Federal Government pointing out that Nigeria had a legal obligation under international law not to deport the detained Cameroonians.

But in a demonstration of reckless impunity, the National Security Adviser, Major-General Babagana Monguno (ret.) deported our clients in defiance of the intervention of the United Nations and the pending suit in court.

Out of shame, the National Security Adviser could not disclose the deportation of our clients from Nigeria but the government of Cameroon decided to celebrate the deportation and threatened to prosecute our clients for terrorism. I have protested the deportation to President Buhari and demanded that our clients be returned to Nigeria without delay.

You were one the lawyers mentioned in the case. What role did you play?

My learned colleague, Mr. Abdul Oroh, is handling the case with our law firm. Both of us were at the High Commission of Cameroon last (penultimate) Tuesday to demand for access to our clients who are currently held incommunicado in Cameroon. We were asked to submit a letter to that effect and we have done so.

Does Nigeria have any extradition treaty with Nigeria? What laws were respected and what laws were violated?

Nigeria has no extradition treaty with Cameroon. For that reason, the Federal Government could not file extradition proceedings in any local court. Hence, the deportation was carried out outside the ambit of the Extradition Act. No law was respected whatsoever but many laws were breached by the Federal Government which has continued to exhibit authoritarian tactics and rule of might under a democratic dispensation that is supposed to be anchored on the rule of law.

In deporting our clients, the Federal Government violated Section 1 of the National Commission for the Refugees Act which prohibits the expulsion, extradition or deportation of any person who is a refugee to the frontiers of any country where his life or freedom would be threatened on account of his membership of a particular group or political opinion or whose life may be endangered for any reason whatsoever.

The Federal Government also breached the human right of our clients to enter Nigeria, reside, seek and obtain asylum as guaranteed by Article 12 (3) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act. The Act further provides that every individual shall have the right, when persecuted, to seek and obtain asylum in other countries in accordance with the laws of those countries and international conventions. Apart the violation of those laws, the Federal Government breached its legal obligations under the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1969 Organization of African Unity Convention on Refugees which guarantee the rights of refugees and asylum seekers in Nigeria to protection.

Among those said to be arrested were those having Nigerian citizenship and working here; and others with refugee status or seeking same. What does this scenario tell us about the Buhari administration?

We have established that three of the deportees are naturalized citizens while others are recognized refugees and political asylum seekers in Nigeria.

Twelve of our clients who are the leaders of the people of Southern Cameroon have been living in Nigeria for several years. Some are lecturers at the Ahmadu Bello University and the American University in Yola. Three of them are lawyers.

Those who are not refugees among them have been granted permanent residency status in Nigeria. You can only expel a foreigner from your country if he violates the law. Even then an asylum seeker cannot be turned over to the authorities of a country that is likely to persecute him. Under no condition can a Nigerian citizen be deported from the country.

The only time that a Nigerian citizen had been deported was in 1980 when the Shehu Shagari regime expelled Mr. Shugaba Abdulraman Darman and dumped him in Chad. The deportation was declared illegal by the High Court which ordered the Federal Government to bring him back to the country. The court also awarded damages in favour of the deportee.

The illegal deportation of the naturalized Nigerians and the refugees has caused a huge embarrassment to the Federal Government because there is no legal justification for it. Can you believe that the National Commission for Refugees, the Immigration Department and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were not consulted before the deportation of our clients was carried out?

Some people look back from the arrest and transfer of Charles Taylor under Obasanjo, to the inaction of Jonathan when Libya was under attack and now transferring people who fear for their lives to a government they are running away from and the question of Nigerian leadership in Africa. What do you have to say?

It is trite that the foreign policies of a government are dictated by its domestic policies. The case of Charles Taylor is totally different from this one. The Special Court for Sierra Leone set up by the Security Council of the United Nations had issued a warrant for the arrest of the ex-Liberian president for crimes against humanity. Nigeria was under a duty under international law to turn him over to the court.

Barcelona are currently in the capital ahead of tonight’s Champions League game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Catalan giants are currently on course for a third treble in nine years and victory tonight should be enough to see them through, with Chelsea likely to face a huge fight in the return leg at the Nou Camp.

But Spanish website Don Balon say Barcelona are in crisis ahead of the showdown amid fears Umtiti may join Manchester United at the end of the season.

The France international is regarded as one of the best centre-backs in La Liga.

And with United struggling at the back, his arrival would no doubt be welcomed by Red Devils fans.

Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are all facing uncertain futures at Old Trafford.

Rojo has emerged as a top target for PSG, while Smalling and Jones are likely to pay the price for their average displays in recent weeks.

There are also concerns about Victor Lindelof, who has struggled for form since arriving from Benfica back in the summer.

CHELSEA STAR VICTOR MOSES HAS REVEALED THAT HE IS HONOURED TO BE NAMED PLAYER OF THE YEAR AT THE NFF AWARDS AND HAS BEEN CONGRATULATED BY WORLD FOOTBALL GOVERNING BODY, FIFA.

FORMER SUPER EAGLES MIDFIELDER WILSON ORUMA MADE HIS FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE AT THE NFF AWARDS ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 19 AFTER HIS LATEST RECOVERY FROM A MENTAL BREAKDOWN.

Oruma’s post-football life has been out of order following the mental breakdown he suffered after he was duped the sum of N1.2b.

The 41-year-old has fully recovered after he was hospitalised following his recent struggles and attended the 2018 NFF Awards at the Eko Hotels and Suites.

ORUMA ALL DAPPER

The 1996 Olympic Games Gold winner looked very healthy in a dapper suit as he stepped out for the awards.

He came on stage, alongside Femi Opabunmi-another former player who has had it rough in recent times-to present an award.

Following Oruma’s latest ordeal, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) quickly stepped in to help.

After he was released from the hospital, he stayed at the home of NFF president Amaju Pinnick while a three bedroom flat was being arranged for him.

Pinnick had also revealed that the midfielder will be handed a coaching role with the Flying Eagles as they fully integrate him into the Nigerian football family.

ORUMA’S CAREER
Oruma had a 17-year career playing for the likes of Lens, Samsunspor, Sochaux and was also a regular for the Super Eagles.

He was one of the breakout stars of the Golden Eaglets that won the 1993 U-17 FIFA World Cup.

Three years later, he was part of the U-23 team that made history by winning the gold medal at the football event of Atlanta 96 Summer Olympic Games.

He also represented the Super Eagles and won two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) bronze medals (2002 and 2006).
