The lions’ cage at the Jos Wildlife Park in
Plateau State will soon receive a lion from the
Maiduguri Zoo, the Borno State Capital on
a trade by barter deal entered by the two
States.
State commissioner for Culture, Tourism and
Hospitality, Mwankon John, who initiated the
mutual partnership between the two wildlife
parks, told journalists yesterday in Jos.
“We are giving them one of our animals,
because we do in-house breeding here. And
they will give us a lion in exchange.
This arrangement will replace the lion that was
killed late last year,”
“We have made a proposal to that effect to the
State Executive Council (SEC), and we have got
the approval. We are only waiting for
the release of funds to do the exchange.”
The park, on December 2, 2015, recorded a
loss with the killing of Leo, a lion which
escaped confinement through a rusty cage.
DAILY POST recalls that the dead lion was shot
severally, and killed by some soldiers, drawing
worldwide condemnation by animal rights
activists who insisted that the park needed to
have used trained personnel to demobilize the
animal, using tranquilizers.
However, the General Manager of the State
Tourism Corporation, Mr. John Doy, then said
the agency did not have tranquilizers,
and decided on inviting the soldiers as last
resort to save the lives of
residents.
The State Commissioner, has, however, said
the proposal to replace Leo was done as a total
package which also entails doing a lasting
mending of the confinement at the overall
cost of about N2 million, before doing
the exchange.
Mwankon said the present administration in
the State was committed to reviving the
tourism sub-sector, to attract investment in a
state recovering from over a decade of violent
hostilities.
Jos Wildlife Park is known for having situation
of lions breaking out from the eastern gate.
Personnel at the park had said the lion was
hungry for days, and was probably before it
jumped unto a raised platform, and forced
open the cage.

Kaduna-based group known as Prayers Work (PW)
has decided to gather over 1,000 Christian and
Muslim clerics who will help Bukola Saraki, the
Senate president, to triumph at the Code of
Conduct Tribunal (CCT). Speaking with The Guardian, Suleiman Maja, the coordinator of the group, explained that they resolved to assemble the clerics because of their belief in the effectiveness of their prayers. “We believe so much in the efficacy of prayers. We have seen about 1,000 clerics in Christianity and Islam who have willingly showed interest in begging God for Saraki’s success before the CCT. “We believe God will give him victory and when this is accomplished, it will increase the faith of others by putting their trust in God and not any man. Man will fail but God will always win,” he said. Meanwhile, some political leaders under the aegis of Leaders of Thought North Central Geo-Political Zone have expressed their disaffection with the trial of Bukola Saraki. Briefing journalists on Monday, April 4, in Ilorin, the leaders of the group drawn from Kogi, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau and Kwara states, called for the termination of the trial. They noted that former governor of Lagos state Bola Tinubu committed a similar offence as Saraki but was discharged and acquitted. Senator Mohammed Ahmed, the spokesman of the group, said: “We call for the immediate dismissal of the ongoing trial at the CCT but should this injustice and political persecution continue then Chief Bola Tinubu must be re- arraigned immediately.” Enumerating some of the achievements of Saraki, members of the group described him as one of the strategists of the All Progressives Congress, whose contributions resulted in APC sweeping all the available political offices in the zone during the last general elections. “With the Senate searchlight on Treasury Single Account Nigeria is saving over N600million every day. The war against Boko Haram is being won because the National Assembly approved the funds. He brought succour to Nigerians from cancellation of fixed PHCN charges from DISCO tariff and saved the nation from labour strike in that regard among many others.” “As leaders in the zone that produced Senate president, we are compelled to cry out on the injustice being done to our illustrious son, Saraki who God recently elevated to the position of the Senate president,” he said. On Tuesday, April 5, the Senate president appeared before the CCT for the seventh time. While making his introduction at the court, one of Saraki’s lawyers, Paul Usoro (SAN), disclosed tha the Senate president was represented by 51 lawyers. However, Kanu Agabi, the lead counsel, was absent as he was in Akwa Ibom state.

The regulatory impasse between the country’s telecommunication regulator, Nigerian Communications Commission, and a leading GSM service provider, MTN, has taken a new dimension, with a recent payment of N50billion “good faith deposit” by the latter. The crisis began in October last year when the NCC slammed a N1.04 trillion (about $5.2 billion) fine on MTN for failure to disconnect 5.1 million unregistered subscribers’ SIM cards from its network. Shortly after the announcement of the fine, MTN claimed it had secured a 35 per cent reduction, equivalent to N647 billion (about $3.4 billion) from the NCC. NCC however blamed typographic error in its letter to the operator, saying the actual reduction was by 25 per cent (N780 billion). As the December 31, 2015 deadline for the payment of the fine elapsed, the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, claimed the final decision on the matter rests on the Presidency, clearly ignoring his role as the head of the supervising ministry. But as a regulatory agency established by law of the National Assembly, the NCC has the full backing of the constitution to make and enforce its rules and regulations, with the supervision of the ministry, and without reference to any higher court. Industry experts argued that it was the lack of firmness by government officials to enforce its rules that emboldened MTN to go to the Federal High Court in Lagos to challenge the fine. But, as far back as 2013, the Director of Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement at the NCC, Ubale Maska, said the regulator had written to all operators in the Nigerian telecom sector, giving a July 1, 2013 deadline for every unregistered Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards to be disconnected from their networks. He said the NCC cautioned that any operator that failed to comply would be liable to a fine of N200,000 for each SIM card pursuant to Regulations 19 and 20, Section 15(2) of the Registration of Subscribers Regulations, Act 2011. “Clearly, more than two years later, MTN Nigeria flagrantly ignored the regulatory directive. But, the same company and its parent group were the first to describe the fine as excessive and arbitrary,” said an industry player, Sam Nelson. At the expiration of the November 15, 2015 deadline, when MTN refused to pay the fine, NCC was compelled to allow an extension to December 31, 2015. The regulator also threatened other sanctions, including a possible withdrawal of its operational license. “Interestingly, more than two months after the deadline, the impression Nigerians are left with is that government laws are meant to be breached with impunity without any consequence,” Mr. Nelson said. Last month, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Ferdi Moolman, announced the company’s decision to withdraw its suit against the Nigerian government, following a part payment of the fine to the federal government. The announcement, however, stirred controversy with NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Tony Ojobo, claiming the commission was never aware of either the MTN’s decision to withdraw the case or of its payment of N50 billion “good faith deposit” to the federal government. Although the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, initially also denied knowledge of the deal, confirmation came later to reveal the involvement of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami. The Attorney-General, who later confirmed that MTN, through its legal counsel, approached his ministry to indicate willingness to withdraw the case, said nothing concrete took place. He explained that the N50 billion was a “good faith” gesture towards an amicable settlement of the fine saga. “The matter is what the office of Attorney-General of the Federation, as the chief law officer of the federation, is constitutionally vested with the powers to do, as the matter is pending in court,” Mr. Malami said. The minister further explained that an audience with MTN should not be misconstrued as an intention to saddle the NCC, the federal government or his office with an obligation over the fine. Experts however picked holes in the said meeting with Mr. Malami, saying since the NCC had handed down appropriate sanctions in line with the terms agreed by all operators, there was no basis for the meeting. “In the first place, why was NCC not involved in all preliminary negotiations and decisions, having direct or indirect bearing with the fine, being the agency at the centre of it all? The acting director-general of Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP, Ahmed Abdu, on Friday said Nigeria saved about N680billion from the reviews and certification of federal government contracts between 2009 and 2014. Mr. Abdu said this in Lagos at the opening ceremony of a Procurement Retreat for Chief Executives of Federal Government Parastatals and Agencies, organised by the BPP. “We sanitised the public procurement system through the registration, categorisation and classification of Federal Contractors, Consultants and Service Providers on its National database. “The Bureau saved the nation over N680 billion through prior reviews and certification of Federal Government contracts between 2009 and 2014,” he said. Mr. Abdu also said that the procurement cadre in the Public Service had been professionalised through various capacity building programmes. According to him, procurement is globally recognised as a tool for good governance, considering the immense benefits derivable from a sound procurement system. Mr. Abdu also disclosed the bureau’s plan to ensure strict compliance with extant regulations and guidelines on public procurement. “As a signatory to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), Nigeria’s fight against corruption is statutorily expected to shift from corrective to preventive measures. “We also remain committed to the provision of technical support to state governments in domesticating the Procurement Act in their respective States, to ensure that procurement reforms make visible impact at state level,” he said. The Secretary to the Federal Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, said President Muhammadu Buhari’s disposition to tackling corruption was within the ambit of the rule of law. Represented by the permanent secretary in his office, Mohammed Bukar, Mr. Lawal reminded the chief executive officers of the president’s “unwavering commitment” to probity, accountability and value for money in government procurements. The Federal Government says it has uncovered discrepancies of about N3.3tn in the remittance of funds by various Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government as well as foreign missions in the 2014 fiscal year. This was contained in the 2014 Annual Audit Report presented to the National Assembly on Monday by the office of the Auditor General of the Federation. According to the document, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation did not remit N3,234, 577,666,791.35 to the Federation Account Allocation Committee in 2014. Apart from this, the report stated that $235,685,861, being gas sale proceeds accruable to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas, was also not paid to the federation account, but rather, transferred to some undisclosed Escrow Accounts. The report alleged that relevant documents were not made available to the office of the Auditor General for verification. It added that N36,432,423,968.73 was released to the Office of the National Security Adviser, then under the headship of Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), for the rehabilitation and construction of dams instead of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources. Apart from this, the report stated that N2,894,531250.00 was spent on the procurement of hand sanitisers for schools and critical public places to tackle the Ebola epidemic. The report said, “The sum of N31,324,952,239.87 was paid as subsidy on fertiliser and youth employment in agricultural programmes. “The sum of N2,395,851,978.00 was payment for group Life Assurance Premium for Armed Forces budget in 2013, but not backed (by cash). The sum of N500,000,000 was made as payment for agricultural programmes. “These were variances with the purpose of the fund. No evidence of these lines of expenditure in the 2014 Appropriation Act.” The report added that the management of the National Assembly, headed by the Clerk, made payments of N9,514,568,222.62, without raising payment vouchers. The report noted that the management of the National Assembly violated the nation’s financial regulation. In the same period under review, the report noted that personal advances were granted to 112 staff of the National Assembly from recurrent votes and 50 members of staff from general service votes from July to December, 2014 for various purposes, totalling N1.162,009,305.00. In the audit report, the AGF revealed how the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington DC, United States of America, realised Internally Generated Revenue of $3,705,428.00 between 2012 and March 2015, but expended the whole amount on sundry expenses. The report added that a 22-storeyed building, housing the Nigerian Consulate-General, the National Boundary Commission of Nigeria and the National Intelligence Agency, was fast deteriorating and grossly underutilised, but huge sums in dollars were being expended to maintain it. It recommended its immediate rehabilitation while it said the underutilised space be put up for rent to earn revenue for Nigeria. The report added that the leadership of the Nigerian Prisons Service deducted Pay-As-You-Earn tax of N2,036,758,176.75, but failed to remit the money to the Federal Inland Revenue Service. The report noted that there was no evidence of remittance and nothing was produced for audit confirmation. Another startling revelation in the report is the purchase of a vessel in Singapore on behalf of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources for training programme at the Petroleum Training Institute, in Delta State. It noted that part of the payment, which was not stated, was paid while the vessel had been abandoned for five years with the vessel vastly deteriorating in value. “The cost of the purchase and how much was paid before the vessel was abandoned could not be ascertained due to the fact that the contract was awarded without the involvement of the Nigerian Mission in Singapore,” it added. The report also stated that about $1.6m out of the contract sum of $2.3m, meant to build a school by Nigeria in Haiti at an area not affected by the earthquake in 2010, had been paid without the project being executed up until now. The report stated, “As of the time of inspection, there was no evidence of a Memorandum of Understanding between Nigeria and the Haitian Government for the construction of the school. More so, the location of the school was not affected by earthquake in 2010. Therefore, the purpose for which the money was given could not be achieved.” The report also uncovered an alleged N3.8bn allocation in the Ecological Fund, which was disbursed to Lagos, Ogun, Kebbi and Sokoto states as grants for undisclosed reasons and changed to capital vote in 2010. “Despite repeated demands for payment vouchers they were not provided. We could not verify the nature of the grants,” the report added. Source: www.globalnaijablog.com/2016/03/15/nnpc-didnt-remit-n3-2tn-to-fg-in-2014-auditor-general/

President Muhammadu Buhari has been conferred with the highest national honour of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea. According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President was conferred with the national honour in Malabo on Monday for his personal integrity, exemplary leadership style and courage to fight terrorism in order to ensure peace and safety in Africa. The honour of “Gran Collar De La Orden De La Independencia” translated “Grand Collar of the Order of the Independence” was said to have been conferred on Buhari by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea at the Presidential Palace. At the investiture ceremony, Buhari reportedly said the recognition was for the people of Nigeria who had worked tirelessly to sustain peace in the country and across other neighbouring countries in Africa. “On behalf of my country, Nigeria, and the people, I will like to express profound gratitude for the honour given to me and my people. The reality of the situation now is that there had never been a time in history for greater neighbourliness, for security and economic stability than now,” he said. The President said the challenges faced by African countries had a common thread, and must be collectively appraised and jointly tackled by all the African countries. Buhari assured the people that Nigeria would always support efforts of ensuring socio-political and economic stability of its neighbours and the entire African continent. Earlier in his remarks, Mbasogo said it was an honour for his country to confer the Highest National Honour on Buhari on his first visit to the country. “We are here to recognise the son of the soil. On this occasion, we deem it fit and appropriate to decorate the son of Africa for the great work he is doing in Africa, which includes tackling a great menace to the continent, Boko Haram, ” he said. The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has held that successive governments since the return of democracy in 1999 “breached the fundamental principles of transparency and accountability for failing to disclose details about the spending of recovered stolen public funds”. The court then ordered the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to “ensure that his government, and the governments of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and former President Goodluck Jonathan account fully for all recovered loot”. The judgment was delivered on Friday by Justice Mohammed Idris following a Freedom of Information suit no: FHC/IKJ/CS/248/2011 brought by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP). The details ordered by the court to be disclosed include: information on the total amount of recovered stolen public assets by each government; the amount of recovered stolen public assets spent by each government as well as the objects of such spending and the projects on which such funds were spent. Justice Idris dismissed all the objections raised by the federal government and upheld SERAP’s arguments. Consequently, the court entered judgment in favour of SERAP against the federal government as follows: · A declaration is hereby made that the failure and/or refusal of the respondents to individually and/or collectively disclose detailed information about the spending of recovered stolen public funds since the return of civil rule in 1999, and to publish widely such information, including on a dedicated website, amounts to a breach of the fundamental principles of transparency and accountability and violates Articles 9, 21 and 22 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act; · A declaration is hereby made that by virtue of the provisions of Section 4 (a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2011, the 1st Defendant/ Respondent is under a binding legal obligation to provide the plaintiff/applicant with up to date information on the spending of recovered stolen funds, including: Detailed information on the total amount of recovered stolen public assets that have so far been recovered by Nigeria; The amount that has been spent from the recovered stolen public assets and the objects of such spending; Details of projects on which recovered stolen public assets were spent. The judge also made an order of mandamus directing and or compelling the defendants/ respondents to provide the plaintiff/applicant with up to date information on recovered stolen funds since the return of civilian rule in 1999, including: · Detailed information on the total amount of recovered stolen public assets that have so far been recovered by Nigeria; · The amount that has been spent from the recovered stolen public assets and the objects of such spending; and, · Details of projects on which recovered stolen public assets were spent. Reacting to the court ruling, the SERAP Deputy Executive Director, Olukayode Majekodunmi, said: “This judgment confirms the persistent failure of successive governments starting from the Obasanjo government, to respect Nigerians’ right to a corruption-free society and to uphold constitutional and international commitments on transparency and accountability. The judgment is an important step towards reversing a culture of secrecy and corruption that has meant that high-ranking government officials continue to look after themselves at the expense of the well-being of majority of Nigerians, and development of the country.” He added: “This is a crucial precedent that vindicates the right to a transparent and accountable government and affirms the human rights of the Nigerian people to live a life free from want and fear. We are in the process of obtaining a certified copy of the around 60 pages judgment. SERAP will do everything within its power to secure the full and effective enforcement of this judgment.” Source: http://www.globalnaijablog.com/2016/03/02/court-orders-fg-account-fully-recovered-loot/

A self-acclaimed Alfa, Alhaji Ibrahim Ahamido, has been arrested by the Maroko Police Division in the Lekki area of Lagos State for allegedly defrauding a trader identified as Moses Sarah. The victim was sometime in December, 2015, introduced to Ahamido in a restaurant in Lekki and Ahamido was said to have boasted he had special powers that could make him multiply money after prayers. The 47-year-old Alfa on February 22, 2016, had collected N350, 000 from Sarah and had promised to boost her business by turning the money to N5m. He, however, absconded with the money, after allegedly giving his girlfriend, Musa Hawa, part of the money (N100, 000), The Punch reports. According to a source, “The woman initially did not believe. So, he promised to help her bring out her child, who at the time was arrested by the police for an offence he committed. He prepared some concoction for her, and just like that, the woman’s son was released. “Sarah was immediately convinced and she trusted him,” the source disclosed, adding that she later asked him for help concerning her business, which was not doing well.” The suspect reportedly asked her to give him the N350, 000 so he could turn it to N5m. Sarah said she believed him and gave him the money. She said, “I told him I would be travelling to Ghana in December 2015, and I would return in January 2016. He gave me something to put under my pillow. He said when I return from my trip, I should check the pillow and the N5m would be there. “When I returned, I checked under the pillow, but I did not see any money. I called him to inform him, and he said it was my fault because I did not come back on time. “He said the money came out from the container he gave me, but when I did not pack it on time, it went back. He then asked me to pay another N9, 000 so that he could make another charm to repair the damage. “It was after I gave him the money and he disappeared that I knew I was dealing with a fraudster,” the victim added. She, however, reported the case to the police, and after a manhunt, Ahamido was arrested. On his part, the suspect said he did not mean to dupe the trader. He said he tried to multiply the money, but the charm failed. “I did not collect up to N350, 000 from her. She even gave me the money in bits. The total is N150, 000,” Ahamido stated, adding that he gave his girlfriend, Hawa, N100, 000 to renew their love. “I will refund the money since her blood was not compatible with the prayers.” Meanwhile, Hawa denied collecting N100, 000 from him. She said, “I came to Lagos about 15 years ago. It was about three months ago that Alhaji came to me and said he wanted to date me. “Three days later, he bought a wrapper for me. I did not know where he got it from. When he continued buying me more wrappers, I suspected something was wrong and I started keeping them so that if a police case arose, I would be able to defend myself. “He bought me only four wrappers. He never gave me any N100, 000,” Hawa stressed. The police, however at the weekend, arraigned the duo before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court on two counts of obtaining under false pretences. The police prosecutor, Sergeant Cyriacus Osuji, said the offences were punishable under sections 409 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011. The charge read in part, “That you, Ibrahim Ahamido, and Musa Hawa, on February 22, 2016, at Marwa Waterside, Lekki, Lagos, in the Eti-osa Local Government Area, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did obtain by false pretences the sum of N350, 000 from one Moses Sarah, with the pretence of making more money for her.” Ahamido pleaded guilty to the charge, whereas his girlfriend, Hawa, said she was not guilty. In her ruling, the magistrate, Mrs. J.O.A. Adepoju, admitted her to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum. Adepoju adjourned the matter till March 2 for further hearing. Scarcity of petrol in Lagos and other major cities across the country has forced an increase in the pump price of the product. It is now selling at N120 per litre. With most filling stations still closing their gates to motorists for the fifth day, the few that sold the product yesterday witnessed long queues of motorists, who struggled to buy the product. In Abuja the scarcity is off and on, with petroleum product availability being unpredictable. In most areas, the scarcity forced the price of the product to between N110 and N120 per litre. Yet, hapless motorists queued up to buy. The NNPC insists that it has a 30 reserve and can cater to the needs of Nigeria, but this is often not felt as most marketers decry the lack of products at major NNPC depots nationwide and have implored the NNPC to make products available.

The Member representing Ekiti North Constituency II (Ido-Osi/Moba/Ilejemeje), Hon. Thaddeus Akinola Aina has declared that President Muhammadu Buhari led administration was yet to fulfill a single promise made to Nigerians during his electioneering campaign. In an exclusive interview with DAILY POST in Abuja, the lawmaker noted that there was honour in fulfilling promises. “They came into office based on promises made to Nigerians, but they are not keen on fulfilling those promises, and as PDP lawmakers, we have been reminding them. As I speak with you, no single project has been executed”, he said. “They promised change, a new Nigeria where they would establish a people oriented governance, you know there is honour in fulfilling promises, it one thing to promise something and it is another thing to do it”, he emphasised. He expressed concern that government would be unable to response to the needs of Nigerians, stating that there was no policy direction in the last 9 months. He regretted that what the administration could boast of was the harassment of Peoples Democratic Party stalwarts, lamenting that unfortunately, their voices were not been echoed anymore because government now controlled the media. He further asserted that there was an obvious gang up against the PDP with the aim of incapacitating it completely. Hon. Aina called for restraint in government’s fight against corruption so that it would not look as if they were witch hunting anybody. President Muhammadu Buhari’s various trips abroad will yield results soon, John Odigie-Oyegun, All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman, has said. Mr. Odigie-Oyegun spoke on Friday in Abuja while responding to questions posed by journalists on the incessant trips embarked by the President since his assumption of duty. The chairman said that the trips were necessary at this point in time to garner support and open up the country to more investors. He said although there was no specific date for the results of the trips to manifest, they would manifest in a matter of months not years. He said that part of the reasons the President was visiting the Middle East was to canvass for improved prices for the nation’s crude oil. Mr. Odigie-Oyegun described Mr. Buhari as an international salesman marketing Nigeria. He said that the president was doing a `fantastic job’ building and re-building the crack in the foundation of Nigeria. Every day the people of this continent try to discover a new way to make us look stupid in front of the rest of the world.A pastor in Tanzania is making waves after it emerged that in his church, his feet must not touch the ground until after his sermon is over. So how to achieve this feat? People must carry him around on their backs standing up, or he steps on their backs whilst they lie down. More photos: http://www.globalnaijablog.com/2016/02/27/438/

LAGOS—THE Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration’s anti-graft crusade was not to witch hunt anybody but to expose Nigerians to cost of corruption. This came as Lagos State governor, Mr, Akinwunmi Ambode, expressed his administration’s readiness to collaborate with the Federal Government to improve all its infrastructure in Lagos, particularly, in the area of culture and tourism. The duo made the remarks at the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja, yesterday when the former paid the governor a courtesy call. The minister, while fielding questions from State House correspondents on the issues of corruption, lamented that Nigerians had not shown much anger against the revelation from the anti-corruption agencies so far. His words: “The emphasis of our government is not just to talk about figure of how much has been embezzled. ‘’Even the figures are dizzy enough. Only two days ago, ADC to former President Goodluck Jonathan said when they brought N10 billion for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, campaign, he did not open it. He said he only gave it to the Special Adviser on Domestic Affairs. This is quite troubling. “But more importantly, our government wants Nigerians to know the cost of corruption. The government wants Nigerians to know what we are suffering. When we had a news conference in January and disclosed that 55 people stole, N1.343 trillion between 2006 and 2013, what we wanted to emphasize was that one-third of the money would have gone to Nigeria. “Using the World Bank rate, we said the money would be able to redevelop Lagos- Ibadan Expressway. It will be able to give us one ultra-modern hospital in each state of the federation. In addition, that money would have given 20,000 units of two-bedroom flat. The remaining will still educate 3,954 students from primary schools to tertiary level. In addition, it will build 183 state-of-the-art schools. “So, what we are trying to make Nigerians understand is that corruption is eating deep, not just into the fabrics of our morals, but it is preventing development.” Earlier, while receiving the minister, Ambode said Lagos was more than ready to work with FG in every area, particularly, culture and tourism even as the state prepares to celebrate 50th anniversary next year. He said: “Just the same way we have collaborated with the police, we will collaborate with you and ensure that whatever we can do to create a facelift to the infrastructure of the Federal Government in Lagos, we will do it because it will eventually be to the benefit of Lagosians and eventually aid the economic growth of Lagos and so talking about the National Museum at Onikan, we will go straight with the commissioners here to see how we can put up a modern-day museum of international standard and see how that can work towards our Lagos@50 Celebration next year. “We are not only doing it for Nigeria, but also for the future of our cultural heritage. We believe strongly that the axis around Onikan and Marina is actually the melting port of our cultural heritage and we must start to recreate the monument in that area to be able to say a whole lot about the history of Lagos and more importantly, a whole lot about the history of Nigeria. “In addition to that, like I said, Lagos@50 is coming up next year and so we are in dire need of monuments and iconic structures. “We would also be collaborating with the Ministry to see how we can get sculptors, artists and curators to be able to put a whole lot of things together and work with our Lagos@50 Committee to ensure that that becomes something iconic on its own and then to the benefits of all Nigerians as well.” Source: http://www.globalnaijablog.com/2016/02/26/421/

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the House of Representatives has said the manner of harassment of the opposition party members, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is making the anti- corruption battle lose its appeals. The members asked the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to concentrate on delivering on its campaign promises of reviving the economy, providing social welfare and arresting the fall of the naira. The Minority Leader, Hon. Leo Ogor, while addressing journalists in Abuja yesterday, berated the EFCC for the arrest of the PDP former Acting National Chairman, Mr. Uche Secondus, on what he described as frivolous charges. “When you sell a specific product for too long, it loses its value. The way they are going about the anti-corruption is not right, arresting everybody, we may get to a stage where the EFCC becomes a political dog, which is what is happening. The president should call the EFCC to order, or rather the EFCC should call itself to order,” Ogor said. Flanked by PDP members, the minority leader said while the party backs the anti-corruption fight, it should not be used as a tool of intimidation, or to silence a vibrant opposition. “They have no business arresting him (Secondus), if he was given vehicles by a private businessman for political campaigns, there is no crime there, because that is normal practice around the globe. “The billions they (APC) spend during elections to charter jets and other expenses, where did it come from? They were given vehicles and funds by different groups and persons during the campaigns,” he added. Ogor lamented that the anti-graft commission suddenly recalled it had a case of fraud of N300 billion against the current PDP Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff, immediately he emerged Chairman. President Muhammadu Buhari jets out to Saudi Arabia and Qatar today to engage officials of both countries in further talks to ensure stability of oil prices. Nigeria, yesterday, agreed to freeze the country’s crude oil production at 2.2 million barrels per day this month, same as the level recorded in January, in a bid to address the declining price of crude oil in the international market. The government’s move is a reaction to Saudi Arabia and Russia which have agreed to freeze oil output at near-record levels, the first coordinated move by the world’s two largest producers to counter a slump that has pummelled economies, markets and companies. Speaking after a meeting with Qatar’s Energy Minister, Mohammed Al Sada and Qatar Petroleum Chief Executive Officer Saad Sharida Al Kaabi in Doha, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu, said the decision was in support of the decision of Saudi Arabia and Russia to freeze oil production. He, however, disclosed that Nigeria was looking for ways to increase crude oil production, not for the purpose of export but for local consumption. "Nigeria will continue to look at the possibility of increasing production, not to sell it, because we have local consumption that is essential for us. “Right now, we are not even exporting the quantity that OPEC has given us. Demand from domestic refineries is at least 500,000 barrels of oil a day,” he explained. Kachikwu also gave far-reaching recommendations on how Iran and Iraq could regain some of their lost market share due to sanctions and war. He said: “Countries like Iran and Iraq have been out of the market for a while and if they are to come back you should not freeze them out where they are, you should freeze them at a higher level. By June, we will come very close to tightening the market.” Kachikwu stated further that there was little chance that the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, will hold an emergency meeting before the next regular one scheduled for June. According to him, "rather than focus on emergency meeting, we need to talk more because if you held a meeting when you have not agreed largely on the solution, it would not be productive and would also affect the price of oil.” Buhari jets out Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari is billed to leave Abuja for Suadi Arabia and Qatar today to engage officials of both countries in talks for the stability of oil prices. The President, who would be away for a week, will be accompanied on the journey by a high-powered Federal Government delegation, including the Minister of State (Petroleum) and Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC), Dr. Ibe Kachikwu. On Tuesday, President Buhari would fly to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital, to hold talks with King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and senior officials of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A statement by the presidential spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina, yesterday, stated: “Ongoing efforts by Nigeria and other members of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, to achieve greater stability in the price of crude oil exports are expected to be high on the agenda of discussions between President Buhari and the Saudi monarch. “Crude oil prices and market stability will also be on the front burner when President Buhari goes on to Doha, Qatar, on Saturday for talks on Sunday with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.” The statement said the President would also hold meetings with heads of international financial organisations and multilateral associations in Saudi Arabia and visit Medina and Mecca to pray for greater peace, prosperity and progress in Nigeria before going on to Doha. Saudi Arabia, Russia to freeze oil output Saudi Arabia and Russia have agreed to freeze oil output at near-record levels. While the deal is preliminary and doesn’t include Iran, it’s the first significant cooperation between OPEC and non-OPEC producers in 15 years and Saudi Arabia said it’s open to further action. Oil pared gains after the accord was announced, signalling traders see no immediate end to the global supply glut. The deal to fix production at January levels, which includes Qatar and Venezuela, is the “beginning of a process” that could require “other steps to stabilize and improve the market,” Saudi Oil Minister Ali Al-Naimi said in Doha. Tuesday after the talks with Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak. Qatar and Venezuela also agreed to participate, he said. Saudi Arabia has resisted making any cuts in output to boost prices from a 12-year low, arguing that it would simply be losing market share unless its rivals also agreed to reduce supplies. Naimi’s comments may continue to feed speculation that the world’s biggest oil producers will take action to revive prices. “The reason we agreed to a potential freeze of production is simply the beginning of a process” over the next few months. “We don’t want significant gyrations in prices. We don’t want a reduction in supply. We want to meet demand. We want a stable oil price,” Naimi told reporters. More than a year since the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries decided not to cut production to boost prices, oil remains about 70 percent below its 2014 peak. Supply still exceeds demand and record global oil stockpiles continue to swell, potentially pushing prices below $20 a barrel before the rout is over, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. said last week. While Novak has said he could consider cuts if other countries joined in, Russia faces significant obstacles to doing so. Oil erased gains in London after rising before the meeting amid speculation the countries would discuss production cuts. Brent crude fell 3.6 percent to settle at $32.18 a barrel Tuesday in London, having earlier climbed as much as 6.5 percent. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/buhari-in-diplomatic-shuttle-to-stabilise-oil-price/

Indigenes of Owo community in Ondo North Senatorial District have advocated that the next governor of the state must come from the area, saying they will support any party that picks an indigene of the town as its candidate in the next governorship election. The indigenes said the town had not produced a governor after the first executive governor of the state, the late Chief Adekunle Ajasin, who reigned between 1979 and 1983, appealing to all stakeholders to support the agitation. In a communique after a meeting of stakeholders and governorship aspirants of Owo origin, held at Owo Town Hall on Sunday, the community urged the aspirants to constitute themselves into an electoral college and elect one among them. In the communique, jointly signed by Dr. Joel Ademisoye, Mr. Olatunbosun Oladimeji and Mr. Olaposi Oyegoke, the indigenes called on the aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress to come together and make sacrifice by letting one of them emerge as a candidate to enable the entire members of the community to support the person. According to them, whoever is chosen must be prepared to accommodate the interests of the other contestants as much as possible if and when the party wins the election. The communique reads in part, “The meeting resolved that the next governor of Ondo State must be zoned to Ondo North Senatorial District and the slot be conceded to Owo. “That a strategic and publicity committee be put in place to enlighten the people and political leaders of the state and the nation at large to see the reasons an Owo person should be the next governor of Ondo State comes 2017. “The meeting advocated that Owo indigenes, vying for the governorship position, should avoid any form of orchestrated violence, blackmailing and political attacks on their fellow co- contestants.” The indigenes also resolved at the meeting that the religious leaders in the community should embark on spiritual warfare to back the struggle for an Owo person becoming the next governor of the state. They noted that the struggle for the governorship should not be among Owo indigenes, many of whom are aspirants, but “one which requires the collective efforts of all Owos against the contending forces from outside.” |
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Kazeem Obayemi, has said widows, the aged, and unemployed youths deserve every help they can get from leaders in the society. Obayemi spoke at a programme on Friday where over 100 widows, the aged and youths of the Ijede Local Council Development Area, Lagos State, were given foodstuffs and equipment to start their own vocations. Obayemi, who said the ability to develop others was a mark of leadership, called on political office holders to go back to their constituencies and make impact on people’s lives. The APC local leader said he was searching for other ways to reach out to the grass roots, adding that he would vie for the position of the chairman of the LCDA to develop the area, as well as touch more lives. He said, “Leaders must lend helping hands in their community and other communities around them. The widows, the aged, and unemployed youths must feel the impact of their leaders. People, who are well-to-do, must help others to grow, which is what we have been doing. “About 150 people benefited from this programme. It is my belief that for any area to grow, its leaders must be dynamic and visionary, and must be willing to help the people to grow.” Coordinator of the empowerment programme, Seun Olanrewaju, said 80 pupils in some primary schools in Ijede had received exercise books. “We gave out foodstuffs to 100 widows and aged persons. There was also vocational training for 100 youths,” Olanrewaju said. Olanrewaju added that the programme was going to be a continuous exercise to reach out to the less privileged and the indigents in Ijede LCDA. http://www.punchng.com/apc-chief-urges-support-widows-others/ |
A former Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, has urged the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal to void the warrant for arrest issued against him on January 14 and February 8 by Justice Ibrahim Buba of a Federal High Court in Lagos. Justice Buba issued the warrant for Tompolo’s arrest for his failure to honour a summons issued on him in respect of a 40-count of an alleged N45.9bn fraud levelled against him and nine others. The judge had in a ruling on February 8 dismissed an application by Tompolo’s lawyers, Mr. Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), and Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, seeking to vacate the arrest warrant on the claim that Tompolo was not properly served with the summons. Following Tompolo’s continued absence in court, Justice Buba, last week Friday ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to seize some assets belonging to Tompolo pending when he would appear in court to answer the charges. In a statement on Sunday, Adegboruwa, however, said Oyetibo’s and his (Adegboruwa) law firms had since last Thursday filed an appeal against the arrest warrant issued on Tompolo by Justice Buba. In their 10 grounds of appeal, Oyetibo and Adegboruwa contended that Justice Buba erred in law when he “refused to set aside the warrant of arrest issued against him (Tompolo), when there was no evidence to show that he had been notified of the summons and the criminal charge pending against him, before the Court.” http://www.punchng.com/tompolo-asks-acourt-to-void-arrest-warrant/
