Waste Bin Full of Brand New, Intentionally Destroyed Shoes To Prevent Reselling and Maintain High Market Price

By: Abiodun Olumide Daniels, Afrilens News

A new image has surfaced online of high quality, brand new shoes intentionally destroyed to prevent reselling and to maintain an artificially high price.

Fashion and brand company, Burberry once destroyed about £28m worth of stock as a measure to guard against counterfeits. Other fashion and luxury brands that have engaged in practices such as this includes Zara, H&M, A&F, and a host of others.

So, why do fashion brands do this?

In a July 18 2018 report by The Guardian, one of the reasons why luxury fashion brands prefer to destroy their excess goods is to guard against counterfeiting.

"Retailers say the measure is needed to protect intellectual property and prevent illegal counterfeiting by ensuring the supply chain remains intact.

Burberry said it only destroyed items that carried its trademark and only worked with specialist companies able to harness the energy from the process in order to make it environmentally friendly." The Guardian reported.

But why don't they just offer the excess products to charity, or something else?

In a bid to control the market price of their products, and to maintain its luxury tag, luxurious fashion brands would rather prefer to destroy excess products than seeing them been made in the cheap, or being worn 'by cheap people', as former Hollister's CEO didn't want to donate clothes because he didn't want to see poor people in them. So what would he rather do? Burn them!

Rather than offer their excess products to charities, as a form of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), brands would prefer to see to the destruction of such luxury items whilst making other provision for their CSR programs.

Crime / Video: Man 'with No F*cks Left' Chills With A Cigarette During Armed Robbery by AdomeNG: 1:04am On Sep 01, 2019
A St. Louis man who’s obviously seen a few things was caught on camera looking completely unphased as an armed thief held up the bar he was drinking in.

At one point, the man can be seen lighting up a cigarette — keeping his cool the entire time and refusing to get up from his chair — while the suspect points his heavily modified pistol at him. He even refuses to give up his cellphone when ordered by the crook.

“He just was very adamant about it like, ‘I’m not playing your game,'” said bartender Dustin Krueger, who spoke to KMOV4 and other local outlets on Thursday.

Everyone else in the bar during the Wednesday night incident can be seen hitting the deck and looking scared for their lives as the robbery suspect waves his gun at them and takes their belongings. But not the bespectacled “badass,” as some people were describing him on social media.

“This is incredible,” wrote one person on Twitter. “Dude has no f–ks left.”

Another user said, “That dude has balls of steel or has nothing left to lose. Either way, ice flows in his veins.”

According to reports, the suspect managed to get away with everyone else’s possessions and some cash from the bar, but nothing belonging to the cigarette man. Many wondered if the guy was just too drunk to realize what was going down.

“We’re hardcore (or numb or really like our drink) here in Mound City,” tweeted one resident.

Some were comparing the man to Samuel L. Jackson’s character in “Pulp Fiction,” who also sits calmly through a stick-up.

“My hero,” said one Twitter user

Crime / Americans React To Fbi’s Indictment Of 80 Nigerian Fraudsters (screenshots) by AdomeNG: 11:42pm On Aug 22, 2019
Earlier today, the Federal Bureau for Investigation (FBI) indicted 80 Nigerian fraudsters for charges bordering on financial crimes and theft.

Live-streaming the FBI's announcement on Twitter, ABC News; the news division of the American Broadcasting Company, ran a 30 minutes broadcast of the announcement on Twitter which saw over 80 Nigerians and US nationals charged with fraud.

Several Americans have reacted to the indictment, and the level of the wire fraud, with many referring to Obinwanne Okeke as 'the Nigerian Prince', a name which might have referred to the generic name scammers use in luring their unsuspecting victims by claiming to have an inheritance they would want to share with them.

A comment on the (ABC's twitter) thread reads: "They're FINALLY going after the Nigerian Princes that been bugging people for money othe last Billion years", whilst another user, Ruth Barbe commended the FBI tweeting "About time. Well done authorities concerned".

Many others are, however, sarcastic with their replies, asking if there would be no more Nigerian Princes.

Health / Inspiring Picture Of Little Boy Who Got His Eye Removed Because Of Cancer by AdomeNG: 12:46pm On Jul 27, 2019
A father shared an inspiring picture of his young son after he got his eyes removed on Tuesday, 23rd July, due to cancer of the eye.

Cancer of the eye, also called “intraocular cancer” is uncommon. It can affect the outer parts of the eye, such as the eyelid, which are made up of muscles, skin and nerves. In adults, the most common intraocular cancers are melanoma and lymphoma while in children, retinoblastoma is the most common type of eye cancer. It starts in the cells of the retina.

In the picture, the little boy can be seen playing with his toy, while smiling for the camera.

Treatment for eye cancer varies by the type and by how advanced it is. It may include surgery, radiation therapy, freezing or heat therapy, or laser therapy.

Eye cancers are best treated at the early stage.

Crime / Man Finds A Highly-explosive World War II Bomb In Grandma’s Apartment by AdomeNG: 10:30am On Jul 27, 2019
A young man has revealed an image of a World War II era 81mm mortar he found in his grandma’s apartment and wondered what it was until he took to Reddit; the front-page of the internet to share an image of the relic.

Simply identified as Sushipepz, the young man posted the image of the deactivated bomb and asked other Redditors what it is.

[/img]
Picture of the bomb Sushipepz found in his grandma's apartment.

Providing an answer to the question, another Redditor, Axel_Thatcher explained that it is indeed a World War II era 81mm mortar which has been deactivated since the hole in the nose (of the mortar) is hollow, which the Original Poster also confirmed it is.

It should be noted, however, that many World War I and II relics still lie around in Europe because two world wars have been fought over the last 100 years in the continent, as millions and millions of bombs were dropped around the continent, and not all of them exploded when they were supposed to and not all have been cleaned up.

Nairaland / General / 140 Million Yr Old,500kg Femur Of World's Largest Dinosaur Discovered In France by AdomeNG: 9:44am On Jul 27, 2019
The thigh bone of a giant dinosaur was found this week by French paleontologists at an excavation site in southwestern France where remains of some of the largest animals that ever lived on land have been dug up since 2010.

The two-meter long femur at the Angeac-Charente site is thought to have belonged to a sauropod, herbivorous dinosaurs with long necks and tails which were widespread in the late Jurassic era, over 140 million years ago.

“This is a major discovery,” Ronan Allain, a paleontologist at the National History Museum of Paris told Reuters. “I was especially amazed by the state of preservation of that femur.”

“These are animals that probably weighed 40 to 50 tonnes.”

Allain said scientists at the site near the city of Cognac have found more than 7,500 fossils of more than 40 different species since 2010, making it one of the largest such finds in Europe.

Crime / Death Penalty Law Status In Nigeria: A Review by AdomeNG: 10:00am On Jul 13, 2019
Retentionist. Nigeria last executed three individuals in 2016.

Methods of Execution

Beheading:
A person sentenced to death by a Shariah court in the Northern Region for certain types of offenses may be executed by beheading.

Hanging:

Hanging is the most frequently applicable method of execution. Capital sentences passed under federal criminal legislation lead to execution by hanging. Under Shariah law (applied in some northern Nigerian states), executions may be carried out by hanging for certain types of offenses. In Lagos state, however, execution by hanging may be unconstitutional since a 2012 decision by the High Court of Lagos.

Lethal Injection:

Since 2015, lethal injection is a permitted method of execution pursuant to the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. Nigeria had not executed any prisoner by lethal injection as of April 2019.

Shooting:

Under the Federal Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, applicable in all states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, death sentences can be carried out by firing squad, if so decided by the governor. Under Shariah law, applied in some northern Nigerian states, executions can be carried out by firing squad for certain types of offenses. [In Lagos state, however, execution by firing squad may be unconstitutional since a 2012 decision by the High Court of Lagos.

Stoning:

Stoning (rajm) is a Shariah punishment applied in some northern Nigerian states and reserved for Muslims. The punishment applies for zina (adultery), rape (if the offender is married), [16] incest (if the offender is married),and homosexual sodomy.

Other.

Under Shariah law, crucifixion (salb) is used to punish hirabah—the act of terrorizing people for the purpose of robbery resulting in death and when property is seized. Nigerian states differ on what is meant by “crucifixion.”

Phones / Apple Refunds Samsung After “BAD” Business by AdomeNG: 2:34pm On Jul 06, 2019
Apple reimbursed Samsung $683 million to cover the cost of OLED panels after it missed a sales target that both companies had agreed upon.

Apple planned to buy a certain number of the OLED display panels from Samsung, but disappointing iPhone sales meant it was unable to live up to the agreement. The payment was made in the second quarter of this year.

IPhone lost its wide market share due to the current trade war between the US and China.

The figure, quoted by Reuters , came on Friday as Samsung forecast a plunge in its second-quarter operating profits, but one-off gains like the re-payment from Apple helped it beat analyst expectations.

Samsung’s April-June operating profit likely fell 56 percent to $5.6 billion, this has been the case since their loss with the Samsung note 7. The company revealed in a regulatory filing ahead of the release of its detailed earnings figures in late July. Revenue probably fell 4.2 percent from a year earlier to $48 billion.

Samsung is on track to post year-on-year (YoY) profit declines for a third consecutive quarter, mainly due to a combination of falling chip prices because of a supply glut and U.S. sanctions on Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei, which has become a key Samsung client, but the re-payment meant the company would possibly reduce the company’s loss and may post a profit this year.

The U.S.-China trade war is also impacting global chip and smartphone markets, with rising tariffs hitting demand for electronics. In a striking example of the ongoing feud between the two countries, Seoul also cut its annual economic growth target to a seven-year low as exports continued to slump.

Business / How Airtel Rips Me Off My Data Balance: Injustice In Corporate Organization by AdomeNG: 3:59pm On Jun 20, 2019
Hi Nairalanders,

Last week Friday, I did a data sub on my Airtel line (N4,000) for 7.5gb with about 2.5gb night plan bonus. And this morning, I received a message that I have 50mb remaining in my data balance. Normally, Airtel updates me with my data balance so when I've exhausted 75%, I get notified even up till 95% of my data balance. But on this day, they decide to play a very fast one on me without any notification whatsoever. And I'm dead sure I haven't used half of the 7.5gb but maybe a quarter of it. First, I didn't download anything per se, and that's evident in the screenshot attached with this post from my phone's data usage calculation.

From the data calculation, my phone calculated that I used 1.20gb from June 16th till today. This is more or less 1.5gb from June 14th till now. How Airtel calculated that I finished 7.5gb within a week still baffles me. And you know what's more? I called their call centre agent about this, and I'm sure you know what they'll say. Never owning up to their fault or taking responsibility for anything which I do not blame the agent for. The company has been rooted around that where agents have to protect the company's image and blame customers for any complain or issue that may happen.

Now, my case is this: This is not the first time I'm having issues with this people but this ripping off is too much. Wetin happen? 7.5gb minus 1.5gb is still 6gb extra. How did it fly away? How come a monthly sub is exhausted in less than a week? Will we continue to allow these companies rip us off all the time? And later, they will claim we pay less for data compared to some other countries where they have quality and quantity combined with effective delivery of services. I hope Nairaland will give me the voice I need to vet out this anger so the right people involved will do the needful.

Thank you.
p.s: I once used the Consumer Protection Council sometime last year when I had an issue with this same Airtel, but till today, I haven't heard a word from them. Maybe they will reply tomorrow, I never can tell, but for now, the CPC is no option to relay my fears to.

Yeah, I'm very much okay with your advice. Won't be asking him for it again and if he does return it, I won't be collecting from him. Would let him know I gave him as a gift of something. Mind was off the money immediately he asked to borrow it, so I'm in no loss regarding it.
Business / Re: Advice Needed:borrowed A Friend Some Money, He Refused To Return It by AdomeNG: 9:59pm On May 26, 2019
Acidosis:
If he has a means of paying back (e.g a reliable source of income), continue to ask until you get a refund.

If he's without a job, then you have no one but yourself to blame. When someone without a reliable source of income comes to borrow money, you should know they're never going to pay back. It is a commonsense thing, it's like approaching a bank for a loan without a source of income or collateral.

Sometimes it is good to learn the hard way. The average human being is a cheat; always looking for an avenue (usually the weak point) to outsmart (cheat) the other.
Thank you for your reply. And yes, he does have a source of income to be able to pay back, but then, I won't be asking him again for it. And if he does pay back, I think it's best I just let him have it. I won't collect it, although I know that may make him start having some feelings and all, I just have to let him know I gave him the money the instant he asked to borrow it.

What i normally do is that, if they fail to pay up, i won't ask anymore. You know why? They won't have the face to ask for another.
You're very correct. I know that's how things like this may later end up. But from my OP,
Now, this is where I need your advice: Remembered I said I already gave him the money, right? But if he does bring it back, should I collect it from him or let him have it, since I already gave him in my mind? And if I do give him the money, will this expose me to further 'lending' from him in disguise to pay back, knowing fully well he wouldn't since he can do this as a first-timer?
Just want to know what I'd need do peradventure he brings the money back. Should I collect it or not?

Your money is dead and gone

From the day I gave him the money, I presumed it dead and gone. It was never my intention to collect it back, believe me! I'm just worried about his lackadaisical attitude in such a delicate issue, knowing fully well that money can divide many things and also stopping future occurrence of such 'giving' mentality. I cherish my relationships with people, and money is least of what will mar my relationship with anyone I know.

am in same situation. But on my part i gave him what am ready to let go.its going to 2months now, something he said he wld pay back in 2 to 3 dys time.till date he hasn't spoken about it. He pays fine, he doesn't still fine , but i won't lend him again.
Wow, then we are on the same page bro. Actually, I also gave him what I was ready to part with, but what drives me crazy is the fact that I didn't tell him I gave him the money. He should have at least, shown concern, and explain any difficulty he is having paying back and then expect me to understand. But he did nothing. Just kept mute till I asked him about it the first time. Now, about two weeks has passed from my first time asking him and he still hasn't said anything about the money. So my question and reason why I need this advice is: If he does bring the money back, should I collect it and let him know that I never gave him the money at all(even though I did initially but just to deter him from coming for a free meal again) or I should just let him know I've given him the money (which may seem to register in his mind that I'll always be his go-to place to get free meal whenever he needs it). So what do you intend I do?

I hope bro. Lalasticlala can help put this on FrontPage and let's read what opinion we might get. The broader the views, the better the opinion and advice (cos Nairaland, also bashing) we might get.

And he's not my best of friend, anyways. Just a friend of friend. But a friend, all the same. He ain't my enemy.

Hi all,

As the subject inclines, I borrowed a friend some money but he refused to return it and I'd need your advice on some issues related to this. But first, lemme explain the money issues in detail.

About a month ago, this friend came to me that he needed some money to sort out some things. He has never asked me for such favour before and I really do not need to oblige him the request but since the amount he needed was within my reach to 'let go', I willingly gave (read: borrow) him the money. In my mind, I already gave him the money because I don't borrow people what I need back. I borrow to give.

Now, cutting the long story short, he promised to pay back in a week's time and I gave him an extra day to pay back after the day he promised. But since the day came, he didn't say anytime. When I felt the pressure to ask him, at least, to know how far with the money and what he intended using it for, he gave some excuses. This is a week after the extension I even gave him to pay back. If I hadn't asked him, enough tendencies abound that he won't tell me anything about it.

And is there any action I can take about this? What has been your own experience in issues like this and what would you advice me do on this matter. Note: I and him are still friends and we still play very well till this day and we are both males, so no string attached.
