Ralphjoe:Hey bro, if you would read this, then I strongly advice that you let her know. You never can tell, she may be feeling the same way you feel but expecting you to make the first move. I am in a relationship with the lady I met in the same condition you stated. Now, our wedding is in the corner. You know what? Ladies reason from the top down. If she feels you have what she needs in a man, she'd definitely accept you, but if not, she may be kind enough to let you know you are not her kind of man. If she tells you this, don't be mad at her. Work on yourself and give her a reason to doubt her opinion of you. At the end, you'll find yourself becoming a better man for your woman. All the best, bro. |
"Programmed to spy on the world", Man finds Facebook's CEO spying in a restaurant. A man has found Facebook’s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg spying on people inside a restaurant. Sharing the post on Harvard’s Computer Science learning group on Facebook, CS50, Ahmed Saad wrote, “When you eat food(sic) with your family buy you are programmed to spy on the world” and shared the image showing the young billionaire on a table with his wife looking over the shoulder of a lady on her phone. Although Facebook has been known to spy on people using several of its technologies in collecting users personal data, and has been questioned about its activities in the 2016 US elections coupled with the Cambridge Analytica scandal, it comes to be seen whether the company will now employ the use of humans in its spying business. The post has been liked over two hundred times and shared over twenty times on the group’s page. Source Lalasticlala

Meet Eric James Torpy, a convicted criminal who increased his years in jail because of his love for what? A basketball player! Eric James Torpy, was convicted of shooting with intent to kill and robbery. He asked that his sentence be changed from 30 years’ imprisonment to 33 so that it would match Larry Bird’s jersey number. His request was granted. Larry Joe Bird (born December 7, 1956) is an American former professional basketball player, former coach, and former executive who most recently served as President of Basketball Operations for the Indiana Pacers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). In October 2005, Torpy asked an Oklahoma County judge to tack on three more years to his 30-year prison sentence for armed robbery and two counts of shooting with intent to kill. “He said if he was going down, he was going to go down in Larry Bird’s jersey,’’ Oklahoma District Judge Ray Elliott told the Associated Press back then. “He was just as happy as he could be.’’ But now, he has rejected his decision. “Now that I have to do that time, yes I do,’’ says Torpy. “I kind of wished that I had 30 instead of 33. Recently I’ve wisened up. “That three is a big deal, you know? Three years matters.’’ Torpy will turn 41 this year and is not eligible for parole until 2033. The 33 imagery doesn’t end there. Put his arms together and the tattoos on his elbows read “33.’’ He also has a small green shamrock tattooed near his eye. “I’ll always represent Larry Bird,’’ he says. “He’ll always be on me.’’ Source cc: Lalasticlala, Dominique, Islie

The founder of Xiaomi has been given a “reward” worth almost $1billion by the Chinese smartphone-maker. The payment was confirmed in the firm’s 2018 annual report. The company had previously said it intended to make the share-based bonus to Lei Jun in recognition of his eight years of “devotion” to the company . Lei in turn has promised to donate the sum to “charitable purposes” once taxes have been deducted from the compensation package. He owns a 636.6 million shares worth 7.54bn Hong Kong dollars ($962.0m; £735.6m) based on their closing price on Tuesday after they rose 1% over the course of the day. The amount is not far behind the 8.6bn yuan ($1.3bn; £980m) figure declared as Xiaomi’s adjusted net profit for the year. The share transfer is in addition to other payments the company made to Lei including a salary and dividends, for which an exact sum was not given. The payment follows the flotation of the company’s stock in Hong Kong in July. Growing fast Beijing-based phone maker Xiaomi was the world’s fourth biggest smartphone maker in 2018, according to the market research firm IDC , after Samsung, Apple and Huawei. The number of handsets it shipped rose by 32.2% over the period at a time when the wider market contracted by 4.1%, said IDC. Over the past month, the company has experienced problems with the launch of its latest flagship models – the Mi 9 series – which it failed to manufacture fast enough to meet with its customers high demand. At one point Lei – who is Xiaomi’s president–was reported to have declared he would “go to the factory and drive the screws in myself”, if matters did not improve. A Taiwanese woman was found by doctors to have four small sweat bees living inside her eye, the first such incident on the island. The 28-year-old woman, identified only as Ms He, was pulling out weeds when the insects flew into her eyes. Dr Hong Chi Ting of the Fooyin University Hospital told the BBC he was “shocked” when he pulled the 4mm insects out by their legs. Ms He has now been discharged and is expected to make a full recovery. Sweat bees, also known as Halictidae, are attracted to sweat and sometimes land on people to imbibe perspiration. They also drink tears for their high protein content, according to a study by the Kansas Entomological Society. ‘They were all alive’ Ms He was weeding around her relatives’ graves when the insects flew into her left eye. She was visiting the grave as part of the annual Chinese Qing Ming tomb-sweeping festival, which is traditionally observed by sprucing up loved ones’ graves. When a gust of wind blew into her eyes she assumed it was dirt that had entered, she told reporters. But hours later, her eyes were still swollen and in pain, leading her to seek medical help at the hospital in southern Taiwan. “She couldn’t completely close her eyes. I looked into the gap with a microscope and saw something black that looked like an insect leg,” Dr Hong, an ophthalmology professor at the hospital told the BBC. “I grabbed the leg and very slowly took one out, then I saw another one, and another and another. They were still intact and all alive.” Pictures of the bees were shown on Taiwanese TV. Dr Hong added that the bees could have been blown inside her eye by a gust of wind and found themselves stuck inside. “These bees don’t usually attack people but they like drinking sweat, hence their name,” he said. Dr Hong added that Ms He was “lucky” that she did not rub her eyes while the bees were inside. “She was wearing contact lenses so she didn’t dare to rub her eyes in case she broke the lens. If she did she could have induced the bees to produce venom… she could have gone blind. But what’s happened to the bees? “They are still alive, they’ve been sent as specimens to another organisation and will be studied,” said Dr Hong. “This is the first time in Taiwan we’ve seen something like this.” Source https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HZUwFD1FZw

A pastor of a church in South Africa has ordered his members to eat grasses in order to get rich. According to a post circulating online, the pastor urged his members to eat more grasses, saying “the more grasses you eat, the more richer you get”. The post has generated a lot of controversy online, and Afrilens News can authoritatively report that the story is genuine. Of recent, church pastors have been coming under intense scrutiny either for playing suicidal pranks on members or for fake miracle stunts performed by them. Earlier this year, a pastor from South Africa performed a miracle where he raised a man from death. And according to checks, the miracle was said to be fake; even as the pastor involved denied doing such. More about this story: Do miracles exist? Pastor Alph Lakau, of the Alleluia Ministry in South Africa was alleged to have raised a man from the dead, even as a video confirming the said miracle was shared online. In the video, he was seen resurrecting a man who seem to have died and came out perplexed into life whilst his church members kept shouting his name. This new revelation by a South African pastor is the latest news of such bizarre things pastors in Africa tell their members to do. Source: Afrilens News cc: Lalasticlala, Seun, Islie, Dominique

-Nairalander & Publisher of Afrilens News celebrates birthday -Recounts life's story as father rejects pregnancy Afrilens News publisher, Abiodun Olumide Daniels clocks twenty-six years today. The astute businessman who was born exactly twenty-six years ago took to social media to share his life’s story, as father rejects his pregnancy and never showed up to welcome him at birth. Sharing the story on his Facebook and Instagram handle, the publisher shared a scanned image of a letter written by his grandfather (maternal) to his paternal grandfather congratulating him about the birth of his grandchild and requesting his co-operation for the discharge of the baby and his mother from the hospital. Part of the letter reads “…that the pregnancy has peacefully yielded a baby boy on 2/4/93. Both the baby & mother are still lying at Comfort Nursing Home, Oshodi”. As he celebrates his birthday, he reached out to less privileged children in his neighbourhood and fed them, noting that “there is no point for celebrating life when children still starve to death around us”. The foundation named ‘Afrilens News Foundation’ is set to launch on Children’s day, May 27th 2019, with the feeding of a thousand children across Lagos. I guess this is one of your cooked up stories that you guys have written again.Nah, this is not a cooked up story. If you know what journalism is, you wouldn't be surprised to see cheating housewives open up to tell her story. What they really need is someone to share their story the way it is without adding spice, and if that would be added, it should be explicitly stated. So my dear, this is not '...one of your cooked up stories... again'. |
derrydinny:Believe me, you ain't seen nothing yet. This is actually the first part of this report. The second part is currently undergoing some editing. Should be available before the end of the week, or worst still, next week. And only then would you understand the full impact of sexual infidelity going on around us. And thanks for dropping by, anyways. |
sholatech:Absolutely true. Thanks for your submission! |
It takes two to tango, but in Lagos, three to thrive is better. An outsider (or better called side lover) is needed to run the affairs of the home successfully; albeit in secrecy. The number of women and men caught in the web of marital infidelity is on the high, and don’t be surprised if your neighbor and your spouse are doing it secretly, and roughly. Nigeria; Africa’s largest country by economy and population is home to thirty-seven million households, according to the 2018 McKinsey’s research, with one-fifth of those homes domiciled in Lagos; Africa’s most populous city, alone. But from this large number of households in Africa’s most populous city, majority seem to fancy the idea of having a sex partner who comes in handy when the main partner is not available. This is not only applicable to either of the sexes, but both (or say husband and wife) enjoy the services of these sex partners, many of whom are kept secret from the marriage. Afrilens News Abiodun Olumide Daniels and Charity Ndukwe uncover some gory details about the unholy affairs going on in Lagos homes. Ms. Angela is a 42-year old mother of 3 married to her 45 year old engineer husband. She has been in the marriage for nearly 15 years and has had her fair share of both good and bad experiences in the marriage, but she accepts that hers is a model marriage which she prays for to keep for as long as she lives. She also has Ray, her side lover, who helps ‘fuel it’ when Oga (meaning boss; the nickname she prefers to call her husband) is not around. Asked why and how she resorted to having an extra-marital affair, she replied that “it is the best way to keep my marriage working since he (her husband) is not always around because of his work”. In a further chat with her, she maintained that her extra-marital affair with Ray is not because she lacks any proper care or finance which her husband always makes sure she has access to, but that “the one thing her husband does not show her is what he (Ray) stands for. He gives me the way I want it and wherever I want it”. She was referring to her sexual escapade with Ray; her side lover. Ms. Angela is not the only woman entangled in this web of secret extra-marital affairs. Mrs. Rowland is another woman who finds herself involved and soaked in this web, and is currently considering divorcing her husband of seven years with whom she has two kids as the side man in her life (she wouldn’t mention his name for fear of been published) seems to be better in everything than her current man. As she opined, “he is thick, long within and without and makes me drool every time. He is also rich and handsome, and his pocket is also deep, like his thing”. Asking us “who no like better thing? Abi na to come suffer my parents tell me make I come do for here?” (Meaning: who does not like good things? Or did ‘my’ parents tell me to come here for suffering?) Obviously, she is in this affair for what it is and what it promises: her side man has all the attributes she wants and seeks for in a man. Going further down south to the Island where we have the crème-de-la-crème of the Nigerian society, we met Mr. Johnson, a telecoms expert in one of the large telecoms firms in the state open up to us about his own side of this private affair he shrouds in secrecy. He explained that he “started having extra-marital affairs since I (he) came to know about my (his)wife’s affairs with those young boys she met on Facebook and Instagram”. He explained further that “one even texted her after we have had a good time together as a couple in the middle of the night that he loves her p*ssy and since then, I cannot help it but find a way to pay her back too after trying everything I could to make her stop such demeaning behaviour.” And seriously, he did pay her back. “My mistress (referring to his side lover) is one of her friends, and we have been going out now for over six months”. Asked if the wife knew of the affair since he wanted to use it as a lesson to her in paying her back the same coin as she did to him, he said he “tries to keep it a secret for now until maybe she comes to know about it herself”. In Mr. Johnson, we saw a man determined to punish his wife for engaging in sexual infidelity by doing the same thing himself. Something most men in his caliber accept to be the perfect punishment to mete out to their erring wives. THE LEAGUE OF ‘SINNERS’ Going further to know the extent men go to ‘punish’ their wives by engaging in extra-marital affairs, we were able to bump in to ‘La Tropicana’ resort; a popular posh relaxation center in the highbrow Victoria Island of Lagos where we met with the group of ‘seven wise men’. All but one had a mistress attached to his side as they grant our request for an interview with them. They all come down to the relaxation center every day after work to ‘cool off’ and have a nice time from home every day from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays, they meet there as early as noon to gist and keep abreast of new things in the world especially on sports where they watch the English Barclays Premier League. But on this occasion, we were all watching the ‘el Classico’ together. Kola, one of the seven, explained why they had gathered there and why they only gathered from Mondays to Saturdays and why they would not be available for the same gathering on Sundays: to go to Church and pray for forgiveness since they are in the ‘league of sinners’ who keep a wife at home and enjoy the services of younger, and often fresher women outside, and ‘for God to give them one last chance to commit one last sin before they eventually make it right with their dear wives’. Like they call them in some other climes, he “Yoruba demons” in these men were strongly at play, but the only difference about this is that other tribes were well represented in this ‘league of sinners’. Gregg spoke with us as he sips from his cup amidst a shout of goal. He was jubilating to Jordi Alba’s goal against Real Madrid as Barcelona edge past their hosts one nil. He is a Barca fan. “You see, Daniels (referring to me), we are actually doing our wife good o, believe me for sure. In fact, as we are having our nice time out here, we also allow them have their own nice time out too. Life is too short to not enjoy life. Enjoy life my man”, he quipped, as he kissed his mistress beside him, pouring a content of the drink in his mouth in hers. They both smiled. As the evening progresses, a beautiful young woman in her late twenties or early thirties came to join our party. She is the one Smart was waiting for (Smart was the guy who was yet to have his “mulatto” with him when we arrived. We later knew they referred to their mistresses by this name). She and Smart worked together in the same firm, and was a personal assistant to him before she eventually got promoted, something he helped secured for his mistress. Flaunting the wedding ring on the fourth finger in her left hand, we asked to know if they (she and Smart) were married to each other. They laughed the question over as Smart signaled to us to let the question pass. We did, but he was benevolent enough to let us know they are both married but not to each other. He is just a ‘helper’ who is “helping her husband loosen the nuts and bolts around there”. He further added that her husband “should be thankful to him for making the job easier when he wants to swim”. We bided them well and took our leave, but it was not after we found out that he (Smart) was the one who footed fifty percent of her marriage expenses and even gifted the couple a car. It was the same car the woman drove in to meet us at the party! THE FACEBOOK EFFECT One thing Facebook does is that it helps us connect with the people in our lives. It is the first thing you see when you type the site’s web address in a web browser search console, and one thing the social networking site aims to do better. Realistically, it has also helped increase infidelity in homes across the state, according to Alfa Rabiu Azeez of the Nasrul-Lahi Fathi Society of Nigeria (NASFAT); Lagos branch, who highlights the dangers the social networking site pose to marital homes that have either of the two parties addicted to it. Traversing the entire length and breadth of the state, we met with young Mariam and Quadri in Ilasamaja area of the state. The duo got engaged in May 2018 but less than a year after, cases of infidelity is set to drown their love story. Mariam, a former Christian named Mary before marrying Quadri and accepting to change her name, has been very active on the social networking site. She agreed to using the site for her tailoring work while her husband believed there is much more to the story than she reports.According to the man, on two different occasions, he has caught his wife red-handed ‘sex-chatting’ with another man, even as she keeps her nudes on her phones, something she denied having ever done. As blame trading got its foot on the couple, other couple joined as well to report this new trend of married women sending their nudes to ‘young boys on Facebook’. Emeka is one of such men whose wives have at one time or the other sent nudes to ‘boys on Facebook’. “It was my younger brother that first reported the issue to me and I confronted her to know if it’s true or not but she denied it. But as my brother kept talking about it, I had to take action myself because I know my brother and my wife to be good friends. They talk a lot, so I wondered why he could have suddenly said this grievous thing about her. So I had to take action”. He said the action he took involved him impersonating the ‘boy’ his wife always sends nudes to through the help of his brother who has access to his wife’s phone and worked in one of the shops in Computer Village where they repair phones. “I just have everything to thank my brother for about this issue because he made it very easy for me. In fact, the way he worked, you would think he is a detective. But at the end of it all, I was able to get the truth and my wife pleaded with me not to try such again. I believe her. She has changed”, he added. But the issue of sharing one’s nudes on the social networking side and sex-chatting is not only limited to women, as several cases abound of men sending numerous pictures of their privates to women’s inboxes on the platform, and was a serious case some time ago when one Ngozi Cleopatra exposed the men who have been sending her nudes on Facebook and called them out with attached evidences of their advances towards her. At that time, we can recall that several homes were almost in ruins as other women followed suit to join her to expose the shame of such men. As Lagos continues to wake up earlier before its peers, so is its people’s sexual desire. It is always aroused earlier than is necessary and that sometimes even in the darkest places. Afrilens News is set to bring to you more gory details of the sexual infidelity going on in Lagos streets and homes. Stay tuned and watch for further updates. Police in the United Kingdom have arrested a Nigerian lady for turning a white man into her pet and dragging him on the ground like a dog with a chain tied to his neck. The incident which took place yesterday drew a lot of attention after police noticed the black Nigerian woman pulling the ‘pet’ man on the ground as the man obeyed and crawled on his knees and hands in total submission. Reports have it that the woman had apparently applied juju to confuse the white man, who later accepted to be her pet. In one of the streets in the UK, the woman happily moved around while the old white man was following and crawling like a dog. Police officers, after noticing the tired white man, arrested the woman and started questioning her. It was later confirmed that the lady was on a revenge mission. A science teacher from rural Kenya, who gives away most of his salary to support poorer pupils, has won a $1m prize (£760,000) for the world’s best teacher. Peter Tabichi, a member of the Franciscan religious order, won the 2019 Global Teacher Prize. Brother Peter has been praised for his achievements in a deprived school with crowded classes and few text books. He wants pupils to see “science is the way to go” for their futures. The award, announced in a ceremony in Dubai, recognises the “exceptional” teacher’s commitment to pupils in a remote part of Kenya’s Rift Valley. He gives away 80% of his pay to support pupils, at the Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Pwani Village, Nakuru, who otherwise could not afford uniforms or books. Improving science “It’s not all about money,” says Brother Peter, whose pupils are almost all from very disadvantaged families. Many are orphaned or have lost a parent. The 36-year-old teacher wants to raise aspirations and to promote the cause of science, not just in Kenya but across Africa. On winning the prize, Brother Peter hailed the potential of Africa’s young population. “As a teacher working on the front line I have seen the promise of its young people – their curiosity, talent, their intelligence, their belief. “Africa’s young people will no longer be held back by low expectations. Africa will produce scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs whose names will be one day famous in every corner of the world. And girls will be a huge part of this story.” Many pupils walk more than four miles to reach the school, in Kenya’s Rift Valley Copyright: Getty Images The award, in a competition run by the Varkey Foundation, has seen him beating 10,000 other nominations from 179 countries. He is a Franciscan friar, a member of the Catholic religious order founded by St Francis of Assisi in the 13th Century. Brother Peter says there are “challenges with a lack of facilities” at his school, including not enough books or teachers. Classes meant to have 35 to 40 pupils are taught in groups of 70 or 80, which, he says, means overcrowded classrooms and problems for teachers. The lack of a reliable internet connection means he has to travel to a cyber-cafe to download resources for his science lessons. And many of the pupils walk more than four miles (6km) on bad roads to reach the school. But Brother Peter says he is determined to give them a chance to learn about science and to raise their horizons. His pupils have been successful in national and international science competitions, including an award from the Royal Society of Chemistry in the UK. The judges said that his work at the school had “dramatically improved his pupils’ achievement”, with many more now going on to college or university, despite resources at the schools being “severely constrained”. Status of teaching Brother Peter says part of the challenge has been to persuade the local community to recognise the value of education, visiting families whose children are at risk of dropping out of school. He tries to change the minds of families who expect their daughters to get married at an early age – encouraging them to keep their girls in school. “This is Africa’s time,” said the prize-winning teacher, Brother Peter Tabichi Brother Peter said the award was an optimistic sign. “It’s morning in Africa. The skies are clear. The day is young and there is a blank page waiting to be written. This is Africa’s time,” he said. Brother Peter was congratulated by Kenya’s president, Uhuru Kenyatta. “Peter – your story is the story of Africa, a young continent bursting with talent. Your students have shown that they can compete amongst the best in the world in science, technology and all fields of human endeavour,” said the Kenyan president. The competition is intended to raise the status of the teaching profession. Last year’s winner was an art teacher from north London, Andria Zafirakou, and among this year’s top 10 finalists has been Andrew Moffat, a Birmingham head teacher at the centre of a row with parents about lessons on LGBT rights. The founder of the prize, Sunny Varkey, says he hopes Brother Peter’s story “will inspire those looking to enter the teaching profession and shine a powerful spotlight on the incredible work teachers do all over Kenya and throughout the world every day”. “The thousands of nominations and applications we received from every corner of the planet is testimony to the achievements of teachers and the enormous impact they have on all of our lives,” he says. GraGra247:First, you made a wrong assumption. I was NEVER a Muslim (and I bear no ill towards my Muslim friends), and since from your write up I can deduce you are a Christian, then I won't be wrong saying you are the deluded one. This is NOT what the teaching of CHRIST I hold dearly tells me to do: to persecute the person of others. But hey, this is not the thread for spreading hate or what not. It is clearly for something else. A crime was committed that caused national (and global) turmoil. We should mourn with those who mourn and condemn the attitude of the perpetrators irrespective of who they are religious wise. #PrayForNewZealand #DoNotTribalizeCrime #ShunReligiousIntolerance |
GraGra247:Nah, he's not a fool. He has a right to his opinion, and he was opining to the fact that in previous reportage of crime committed, the journalism world hardly relate crimes committed by Christians as terrorism. This article clearly describes what this act truly is: Terrorism at its peak, irrespective of religion! |
makeitijn:Now, this is called what it truly is: Terrorism, not just mere 'crime'. About 49 dead already, and counting. Scores injured. |

We have no other information to suggest [there are wider risks] but at this point in time we should never make assumptions.” The prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, called it “one of New Zealand’s darkest days”. She said: “Clearly what has happened here is an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence … Please be assured that Police are actively monitoring the situation.” She said it was “an act that has absolutely no place in New Zealand. This is not who we are … The people who were the subject of this attack, this is their home, they should be safe here.” Commissioner Bush said: “This is an evolving incident, and we are working to confirm the facts, however we can confirm there have been a number of fatalities.” He said police are doing all they can to resolve the incident, and urged people to stay vigilant and report and suspicious behaviour. Extra support is being brought into Christchurch from other parts of the country. Commissioner Bush also asked mosques nationwide to shut their doors, and asked people in the area to refrain from visiting mosques until further notice. Following a number of incidents in which violent murders and other graphic content were broadcast on Facebook Live, in May 2017 Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company would increase the size of its staff that reviewed flagged content by 66%, adding 3000 people to its 4500-strong community operations team around the world. “Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen people hurting themselves and others on Facebook — either live or in video posted later,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post at the time. “If we’re going to build a safe community, we need to respond quickly. We’re working to make these videos easier to report so we can take the right action sooner — whether that’s responding quickly when someone needs help or taking a post down.” Source: https://afrilensnews.com/2019/03/15/mass-murder-in-christchurch-mosques-four-people-in-custody/ cc: Islie, Dominique, Lalasticlala New Update: Death toll now 49, according to a New tweet by CNN. Readers Discretion is Strongly Advised! Killings in Ungwan Gora Village, behind Makyali village in Idon Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State has intensified, days after the state gubernatorial election which returned the incumbent; Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, to power. Southern Kaduna has been under the Herdsmen attack for over two years, as the state continues to do nothing to curb the incessant attack on locals, many of whom are considered Christians, as religious crisis fuels in the terror-ravaged community. Press release for immediate publication Lagos: 10/03/19 – Nigerian writers and media mourn Prof. Pius Adesanmi The community of Nigerian writers, scholars and journalists announces with great shock and sadness the sudden and painful passing of our friend, colleague and brother, Professor Pius Adesanmi who was aboard the Ethiopia Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 that crashed on the morning of March 10, 2019 in Addis Ababa. He was en route Nairobi as a participant at the ECOSOCC Meeting organised by the African Union. Pius Adesanmi was born in Isanlu, in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria. He took a BA (First Class Honours) from the University of Ilorin in 1992, then a Masters in French from the University of Ibadan in 1998, and a PhD in French Studies from the University of British Columbia in 2002. From 2002 to 2005 he was Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature at the Pennsylvania State University, USA. Adesanmi joined Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada in 2006 as a Professor of Literature and African studies. He was previously a Fellow of the French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA) from 1993 to 1997, as well as of the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) in 1998 and 2000. A poet and essayist, Prof. Adesanmi, who is survived by a wife and two daughters, was a public intellectual without peer. He was active on social media where he flagellated the Nigerian ruling class with well thought out interventions, amassing a huge following in the process. For many years, Adesanmi maintained a regular column for Premium Times and Sahara Reporters. His writings were often satirical, focusing on the absurd in the Nigerian social and political space. His targets often included politicians, pastors, and other relevant public figures. He spoke truth without fear or favour. In September 2015, his scathing piece on the decision of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, to take an underaged wife generated substantial conversation and even elicited a response from the Emir, who responded to Adesanmi by name. An award winning author, he was a highly sought after speaker and facilitator whose expertise and breadth of knowledge was a delight to all who had the pleasure of hearing him speak. In 2015, he gave a TED talk titled “Africa Is The Forward That The World Needs To Face.” His talk at the televised The Platform programme, held in Lagos, was a national sensation. Among his many endeavours in a prolific career as a public intellectual, Adesanmi maintained a column on the popular Nigeria Village Square website, and was a long-standing member of the editorial team. He was also a member of the Advisory Board of the Ake Arts & Book Festival. Many Nigerian writers had the privilege of knowing Pius Adesanmi for about 25 years, from the moment he burst onto the Ibadan/Lagos literary scene with his creativity, his wit, his love for literary criticism and his infectious laughter. Even then, it was clear that he was special. He was driven, politically astute and he would become one of the most gifted satirists of his generation. His awards include a 2017 Canada Bureau of International Education Leadership Award; Penguin Prize for African Writing in the Non-Fiction category for his book ‘You’re Not a Country, Africa’; and the Association of Nigerian Authors’ Poetry prize for his poetry collection, ‘The Wayfarer and Other Poems.’ Funeral arrangements to be announced by The Family. BOOMnaija:You're damn right! And you wouldn't be wrong saying Africa is cursed because that's written all over the continent with the kind of leaders that attract us as a people. |
How does reclusive President Bouteflika run Algeria? For many Algerians it is difficult to understand how their 82-year-old president, who suffered a stroke six years ago and can hardly walk or talk, can run the country. This turned to disbelief when it was announced that Abdelaziz Bouteflika was running for a fifth term in April - he did not even turn up in person on Sunday to register his candidacy. A wave of anger has moved students, teachers, lawyers and even journalists onto the streets in protest - they seem determined not to accept the continued status quo of rule by a virtually invisible leader. Many worry that a failure to find a successor to President Bouteflika, who came to power in 1999, could lead to instability should he die in office. The TV leader His last known public address was in 2014 - a victory speech to thank Algerians for their renewed confidence in his leadership after he won the last presidential election. He mentioned plans to "reinforce separation of powers, strengthen… the role of the opposition and guarantee rights and liberties". Some viewed this as a sign of policy changes to come to ensure a smooth transition of power, yet there has been no evidence of this and his appearances since have been few and far between.Algerians may have been lucky enough to catch brief glimpses of him on state television greeting visiting foreign dignitaries.Or catch him at the opening of a new conference hall in 2016 - the footage shows him in a wheelchair, looking weak and tired, but alert. But it was not until 2018 that it was clear that his party was pushing him forward as a contender for this year's elections. He was at the opening of a restored mosque and two metro stations in the capital, Algiers. A few weeks later he was given a tour to see the construction of the Great Mosque of Algiers, a $2bn (£1.52bn) project billed as being the third biggest mosque in the world. Divisions run deep Yet again, however, the president, who won elections in 2014 despite doing no personal campaigning, does not have any strong challengers. So why have the ruling coalition and the opposition not been able to put forward other viable candidates? The opposition has historically been too divided - and as the president grew older and frailer the bickering within the ruling elite, including the army, has paralysed any political change. The ruling National Liberation Front (FLN) has ruled the North African nation since gaining independence from France in 1962 after a bloody seven-year war."Le pouvoir" (the power), as many Algerians have come to describe those who run the country, has been centred around the party, some powerful generals and prominent businessmen. Mr Bouteflika's younger brother Said, 61, is the one holding sway in the presidency at the moment - controlling access to the president. The other important figure is Gen Ahmed Gaid Salah, the army chief of staff, who has centralised a great deal of power around him. "The regime has always more or less worked by unaccountable factional decision-making behind the scenes - that continues to be the case but now it's just more obvious given that the figure-head is so obviously incapable of exercising governance by himself," Algeria expert James McDougal from Oxford University told the BBC.The political class has included some of the opposition, who have either ruled in coalition or towed the government line over the years, which has largely discredited them. It is a club that has been accused of corruption and nepotism. In recent comments to the French media about the protests, prominent Algerian writer Kamel Daoud said the country's youth were being robbed of power by their elders. He said by offering a candidate "who was almost dead", "le pouvoir" was showing its contempt for the young people in Algeria where more than 30% of people aged under 30 are unemployed. Pervasive paranoia But it is the legacy of Algeria's recent civil war which seems to have stagnated attempts at reform. The brutal conflict ended in 2002 and weighs heavily on those who fought in it and have grown up in the wake of it - to the extent that some have seemed to be willing to trade some of their freedoms for stability. The violence left an estimated 150,000 Algerians dead, some of whom were "forcibly disappeared" by the security forces.Even liberal opponents of the government are believed to have collaborated with the security agencies in the 1990s during the civil war against Islamist insurgents. This has all led to a deep distrust at all levels of society - and has left little room for any genuine compromises or meaningful national dialogue to instigate change. A Tunisian human rights defender, who spent many years visiting Algeria, told me she was always struck by this paranoia - to the extent that even local human rights groups were unwilling to share information with each other.Other countries in North Africa have shown that decades of one-man rule leave deep roots. In Libya, neighbours, siblings and friends distrusted each other under Muammar Gaddafi's 42-year rule. He was deposed in 2011, the same year as Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, Tunisia's long-time ruler. He had ruled Tunisia through "landslide victories" at the polls and a system that cornered the opposition, weakened it and ultimately reduced them to a side show. On Sunday, President Bouteflika again offered dialogue - and constitutional reform in the event of his re-election as a way forward. This offer came in the form of a letter read out by a presenter on state television. What is new this time is that he has promised that this will lead to early elections in which he will not contest. While this could be an opportunity to ensure a peaceful transition of power, he will have to move quickly given his ailing health.Yet Algeria's problems are, in the words of some regional observers, bigger than an ailing president. It is a system that has kept running thanks to the many people who oil it. In a tweet on its official tweeter handle, the Party listed a seven point case for the INEC chairman to review, whilst it also copied the White House, the United Nations and the United Kingdom PM, Ms. Theresa May. The seven cases listed on the protest letter are: 1. “The non-usage or selective enforcement of the Smart Card Reader (SCR) machines across the country.” 2. “The deliberate non-deployment of the Electronic Collation System (E-collation) for the results from the units through the ward centers to the Presidential Collation Center in Abuja.” 3. “The unconstitutional deployment of the Armed Forces especially soldiers and Police” 4. Bringing to INEC Chairman’s knowledge “that most of the collation center in the country were cordoned off by officers and men of the armed forces who chased away accredited agents and/or candidates of the party”. 5. “Results of duly conducted elections were illegally cancelled especially in the PDP dominated areas to reduce the margin of victory in those states in favour of APC candidates”. 6. That “the commission does not know the number of polling units where elections were cancelled and the total number of registered voters at such polling units”. 7. That “under your watch as Chairman of INEC for the first time in our nation’s history, the election materials of all categories; sensitive and non-sensitive, were contracted to be printed by a person who is not just a card-carrying member of a political party; the APC but also a senatorial candidate of the party in Niger State”. According to the tweet, in areas like Lagos, Rivers, Nassarawa, Abia, Benue, Plateau, Ondo, Osun states, and some other states, results of duly conducted elections were illegally cancelled to reduce the margin of victory in favour of APC candidates. Earlier today, Afrilens News reported that PDP leaders led a protest march on the outcome of the February 23rd Presidential election which brought the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC as the victor in the polls keenly contested between the two major parties, which the candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is yet to concede defeat and threatens legal action to “win the mandate of the people”. a. A senatorial candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi Central Senatorial District, Natasha Akpoti has accused Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi state over torture of one Friday Ovoro, she tweeted earlier today. According to the tweet in which she mentioned the handle of the President and the Vice, the candidate tweeted that Friday; her party leader had been abducted and tortured for twenty days in Kogi government house to admit she (the candidate) gave him guns. Natasha Akpoti’s Tweet on Twitter. Image courtesy: Twitter. The tweet reads: “Dear @MBuhari & @ProfOsinbajo, look at what Yahaya Bello Gov Kogi St did 2 my youth leader Friday Ovoro. Abducted & tortured for 20 days in kogi Govmt house to admit I gave him guns. Sad the @NGRPresident, @PoliceNG & @hrw turn a blind eye to this evil #Natasha#Akpoti#SDP “ However, as at the filling of this report, there has been no evidence of the possession of guns by the said youth leader, and it remains to be seen whether the Police, whom the candidate alleged in other tweets to have worked with the state governor, plans to arrest Friday over illegal possession of firearms. Attempts to get in touch with the spokesperson for the governor has proved abortive, and the Police commissioner could not be gotten to speak with to ascertain the authenticity of this claim. cc: AbbeyDaniels, Lalasticlala Source: https://afrilensnews.com/2019/03/04/kogi-senate-candidate-accuses-gov-yahaya-bello-of-human-rights-abuses-over-youth-leader/

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Minister Fashola, AMCON Chairman Banire, APC Guber candidate Sanwo-Olu, and APC Chairman in Lagos state; Tunde Balogun have all paid solidarity visit to the chieftain of the APC and former governor of Lagos State; Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Sharing a picture of the visit on his Twitter handle, the chieftain captioned the story “VP Osinbajo, APC Nat. Leader Asiwaju Tinubu, Gov. Ambode, Hon. Min Fashola, AMCON Chairman Banire, APC Gubernatorial Candidate SAnwo-Olu and APC Chairman in Lagos, Tunde BAlogun during a solidarity visit to Asiwaju Tinubu at Bourdillon, Ikoyi, Lagos…Saturday, March 2nd”. It should be noted, however, that Tinubu had earlier been accused of swaying people’s opinion in the just concluded Presidential election after a video emerged online showing bullion vans entering his Ikoyi home just two days before the election. The content of the bullion vans was however, not known till date. He also fuelled speculations with his comments after been asked about the video of the bullion vans arriving in his compound by asking rhetorically if it was anyone’s business that he he had bullion vans come into his compound, more so, at a very crucial time when the nation was about to go to the polls. Today’s current meeting has been touted by some to be a very strategic meeting for the now embattled leader whose grip on Lagos seems to be on hold currently, having been at the helm of affairs since 1999 and has personally foisted candidates on his party to field for elections every political year. His troubles reside with the current plans of the PDP to ‘take-away’ Lagos from the APC, after losing power to the incumbent at the national level in the recently concluded February 23rd Presidential elections. cc: AbbeyDaniels, Lalasticlala, Seun
