PoliticsPolice Stray Bullets Kill 2 In Enugu by adventure(op): 1:26pm On Mar 04, 2010
Policemen in Enugu who went for an arrest have ended up killing, at least two innocent persons while two others, who also sustained bullet wounds are currently receiving treatment at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu .

The five-man police team went to arrest one Obiora Utondu of 23 Ochi Street , Achara Layout but failed to effect the arrest as the suspect reportedly turned violent, using a machete to inflict serious injury on one of the policemen.
The police in turn opened fire and in the process innocent passersby were gunned down and others wounded.

One of the victims was identified as Augustine Osita Obe, a 25-year-old trader at Timber Market, Maryland , Enugu, while the identities of the others among them an Okada rider, who also lost his life, were not disclosed.
Obe hailed from Amachalla, Enugu-Ezike in Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State and was said to have just completed his secondary education before delving into buying and selling of plywood. .
It was gathered that the five-man team, led by one Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Ituma Ituma, from the Uwani Police Division who had gone for the arrest met a strong resistance.

Irked by the alleged recalcitrance of the suspect who allegedly displayed dangerous weapons including a machete, the security operatives were said to have opened fire, shooting sporadically and in the process, one of the bullets hit the young Obe on the chest, killing him instantly. Other victims had similar gun wounds.
An eye-witness told our reporter in Enugu that the incident occurred along Ochi Street in Enugu metropolis when the victims were returning from their day’s businesses before running into the scene of the police shooting.
When visited, the residence of one of the deceased at Agbani Road , Enugu , scores of sympathizers were seen consoling the parents of the victim, who threatened to prosecute the police officers in court until justice was done.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the victims have been deposited at the Eastern Medical Centre, Enugu, waiting police autopsy.

It was learnt on Wednesday at the Uwani Police Station that the five member police team was already in cell waiting for interrogation. When contacted the Enugu Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Ebere Amaraizu only confirmed the death of one person.

Said he; “A case of assault was reported against one Obiora Utondu, a case of wounding in which he inflicted injury on one Pastor Jude Utondu of 23 Ochi street. Based on this the police went in to arrest Obiora who became violent and used machete on a police Corporal, Hycinth Ugwu. The suspect also went ahead to break the windscreen of the police Hilux van.”

Amarizu said in an attempt to demobilize the violent Obiora the policemen reportedly opened fire and in the process an innocent victim was killed.
He said the police corporal was receiving treatment in hospital and that investigation was on.
He said the State police command was not taking the incident lightly especially with the murder of an innocent citizen, assuring that justice would be brought to bear on the matter.

Following the National Assembly resolution empowering Dr Goodluck Jonathan as Acting President, the cabal sympathetic to ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua has intensified moves to ensure the status quo is maintained.

Sunday Sun gathered that as part of the plot to convince Nigerians that Yar’Adua was recovering and would soon return to the country to assume duties, the presidential fleet crew comprising the captain, co-pilots, flight engineer and attendants have been prevented from returning home even as they are said to be missing their families and dependants.

It was gathered that the passports of the crew members has been confiscated to ensure they do not leave Saudi Arabia while being confined to their hotels.
A dependable source informed Sunday Sun that even the movement of the crew members was being monitored in connivance with the Saudi Arabia authorities.
Back home in Nigeria, the powerful group is said to be working towards reversing the resolution of the federal legislature and paint the new leadership of the country as incompetent.

It is also said to be behind the worsening electricity crisis in the country and plans to sabotage fuel distribution across the nation, in an attempt to portray Jonathan as incapable of ruling Nigeria.
Sources said the group made up of some serving ministers, a handful of senators, House of Representatives members and some powerful businessmen from the northern part of the country was working to frustrate the government.

It was gathered that the same group has plotted to ensure that the power supply in the country gets worse. Electricity supply to major towns and cities in the country has plummeted in the past two weeks.
They are equally said to be targeting the petroleum sector to create artificial scarcity of petroleum products, all in an effort to discredit the Jonathan leadership.
It was learnt at the weekend that some members of the group in the House of Representatives were responsible for the death of the Bill for the alteration of Section 144 of the Constitution, which would have legitimized the action of the National Assembly in addressing the power vacuum created by the absence of Yar’Adua.

The group, which met in a Minister’s house on Wednesday night, resolved to ensure the death of any bill to alter the Constitution to favour the resolution of the National Assembly authorizing Vice President Jonathan as Acting President.
The group was reportedly formed to counter the growing influence of the National Interest Group (NIG) led by Bala Mohammed, which ensured that the National Assembly passed the resolution empowering Jonathan.
But, the pro-Yar’Adua group is said to be hampered by revelations that Yar’Adua is still believed to be in coma.

It is, however, said to be working towards selling a dummy to Nigerians that the ailing leader was recuperating fast. Although details of the plan are still sketchy, it was learnt that an official in the President’s office and others in the office of the first lady were coordinating the new dummy.

PoliticsPro-jonathan Senators Allege Death Threats by adventure(op): 12:31pm On Feb 15, 2010
There were fears at the weekend that the lives of Senators who stood firm that Goodluck Jonathan should be empowered to assume the position of Acting President might be in danger.

This followed the alleged receipt of death threats by some of the senators identified with the National Interest Group (NIG), who were instrumental to forcing the leadership of the Upper House to “tow the popular line” last week.

It was not clear by yesterday evening how many of the NIG members had received such death threats, but the group’s leader, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed (ANPP -Bauchi South), had alleged that he received one.

Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and Media, Senator Anthony G.Manzo (PDP -Taraba North), however, condemned the news of the death threats, warning that the Upper House would not tolerate acts geared towards silencing opposing views under the current democratic environment.

Manzo, who is the acting spokesman of the Upper House, was reacting to the alleged death threats which were being discussed in hushed tunes among the 80 Senators that formed the NIG.

He said on Sunday, “it is very unfortunate and we condemn all that and the Senate in all sincerity condemn death threats against people who express an opinion and it has no place in a democracy.”

It was gathered that one of the NIG senators had indeed received the death threat barely 24 hours after the Senate resolution asking Jonathan to act as president pending the return of President Umaru Musa Yar’adua, who has been receiving medical treatment in Saudi Arabia since November 23, 2009.

Confirming the death threat received via telephone calls, Senator Mohammed on Sunday, “the threats are not by text messages they have been made through voice telephone calls.”

He did not disclose the message or the tone of the threat, even as he insisted that his group was fighting a cause that was in the interest of the nation and democracy.

Politics160 Senators, Reps Give Yar’adua Thursday Deadline by adventure(op): 4:15am On Feb 09, 2010
ABUJA —AHEAD of the meeting between the Governors Forum and senators this morning, 160 senators and members of the House of Representatives have signified intention to compel President Umaru Yar’Adua to either send a letter notifying him of his medical vacation or face impeachment.

The legislators have given up till Thursday for President Yar’Adua to act accordingly.
For impeachment proceedings to commence, at least one third of members should endorse, according to section 143 of the constitution.

This implies that the 160 signatures collected is slightly more than the required 156 for a parliament made up of 109 senators and 360 members of the House of Representatives. The notice of impeachment is to cite the President’s abandonment of his duty post and his failure to respond to a Senate’s resolution seeking compliance with section 145 of the constitution that required him to transmit a letter to the National Assembly on his medical vacation as gross misconduct.

The resolution unanimously adopted by the Senate, penultimate Wednesday, is yet to be acknowledged by the Presidency. Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters Senator Mohammed Abba-Aji told Vanguard yesterday that he was not aware of any letter from the President as expected from the Senate.

The Senate leadership was, last night, rallying to defer the motion at a meeting where a separate motion urging the President to transmit a letter of his medical vacation was being prepared.

Vanguard learnt that the effort of the Senate leadership led by Senator David Mark was being played down by NIG Senators who were reiterating their determination to push ahead with their moves against the President.

PoliticsSaudi Doctors Warn Turai Against Moving Yar’adua To Nigeria by adventure(op): 8:38am On Jan 30, 2010
Expectations that President Umaru Yar‘Adua would return to the country this weekend from Saudi Arabia where he had been hospitalised in the past 68 days, receiving treatment for acute pericarditis, may not materialise.

Reason: Doctors tending to Yar‘Adua at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital, Jedda, may have warned his wife, Hajia Turai, and the President‘s kitchen cabinet against heightened plans to move him prematurely from Saudi Arabia to Nigeria.

Saturday Punch investigation revealed that the agitated doctors who were of the opinion that the Present‘s health had not improved, had also handed over a disclaimer to the First Lady who is the next of kin of the President to fill if she insisted on acting against experts‘ opinion on the sensitive health issue.

The position of the Saudi doctors was said to have followed the insistence by Turai and members of the President‘s kitchen cabinet that Yar‘Adua must be moved to Nigeria on or before January 29 (yesterday), in order to sustain his hold onto power.

A source who spoke on the condition of anonymity alleged that Turai and the kitchen cabinet members deliberately deceived Nigerians about the reported improvement of the President‘s health, saying it was meant to halt the process of paving the way for Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to assume power as the Acting President of the country.

It was also revealed that contrary to the impression created by the First Lady and her team, the President was still in the Intensive Care Unit of the King Faisal Hospital and was lucky to have survived a critical condition last Friday.

Contrary to the position of the hospital, they were also said to have procured a Ford E-25 advanced ambulance with ICU-type equipment in preparation for the planned journey.

While the Ford-20 ambulance reportedly arrived in Lagos on January 20, it was transported to Abuja three days after, with efforts being made to charter a similarly equipped air ambulance to fly the President back to the country.

The plan was to fly the President into the country late in the night to beat the arrival of a delegation from the House of Representatives, billed to pay Yar‘Adua a goodwill visit early this week.

It was further gathered that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia authorities had given a tacit support to Turai and her group by tactically denying Nigerians suspected of travelling to the country to enquire about the President‘s health condition visas.

Meanwhile, indication has emerged that there is a face off between the members of the President‘s kitchen cabinet and some of their supporters who they accuse of not doing enough to defend the Yar‘Adua presidency.

It was revealed that a memo purportedly signed by Yar‘Adua titled ”Restructuring the Presidency” and sent to the country through one of the President‘s daughters is at the root of the bitter disagreement.

The memo, said to be drafted by the core members of the kitchen cabinet conveyed the decision of Yar‘Adua to sack some members of the Federal Executive Council.

Those listed for sacking include the Secretary to the Federal Government, Alhaji Ahmed Yayale; Head of Service, Mr. Steven Oronsaye; Minister of Petroleum, Dr. Rilwanu Lukeman; Minister of Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili; Minister of Power, Dr. Lanre Babalola; Minister of the Interior, Dr. Shettima Mustapha; and the Attorney General and Minister of Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa.

The alleged plan to sack these ministers ostensibly for the failures in the power, communication and the constitutional shortcomings was strategically designed to cause confusion and divert attention from the burning issue of the President‘s health.

It was said that the letter had not been made public obviously because of fears among the authors of the document that the agitated Nigerian public might raise issues with the letter.

They were said to have held onto the letter because of the feeling that Nigerians would demand to know how a President who could not draft a letter of handover to his deputy to the National Assembly, could write such a letter of terminating the appointment of his ministers.

It was also gathered that Turai and the group were not very comfortable with a former Governor from the South-South and another serving Governor from the western axis of the North Central who they felt were not doing enough to defend what they perceived to be a threatened Yar‘Adua presidency contrary to expectations.

The group is said to be relying more on a former Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service during the military regime to intensify the campaign for the defence of the Yar‘Adua presidency in the guise of protecting the political interest of the North.

The former Customs boss and a top chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party from the South-South were allegedly given about N60m by a Governor from the North Western part of the country to enlist the support of members of the Board of Trustees of the party against deliberating the health of the President during its meeting penultimate Thursday.
