ABUJA—FOLLOWING the growing tension over the prolonged absence of President Umaru Yar’Adua who left the country 23 November 2009, for medical attention, the Board of Trustees, BoT, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said yesterday that the President has been discharged from the hospital. The PDP BoT said, even without President Yar’Adua handing over to Vice President, Goodluck Jonathan in a constitutional manner, however, commended him for what it described as “the vice discharging the duties of the President in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.” In two different statements yesterday on the outcome of last Thursday’s BoT meeting, the PDP National Secretary, Abubakar Kawu Baraje, declared that the situation in the country was under control as both the Executive and the National Assembly have been performing their constitutional duties, despite the absence of President Yar’Adua. According to him, in line with the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja, there was no vacuum in the leadership of the country against the backdrop that the Vice President can act for the President in the latter’s absence without any formal handover. Part of the statement reads, “Rising from its BoT meeting held last Thursday, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, noted the encouraging reports that the President had spoken on the telephone to some principal officers of the country, as well as to the media, has been discharged from the hospital and he expressed the hope of returning home as soon as possible. “Noted, furthermore that both Houses of the National Assembly, as well as the Federal Executive Council under the Vice President, had debated the President’s absence and adopted patriotic resolutions that should help to restore confidence in the nation’s and the government’s ability to effectively deal with the developing issues of this temporary challenge. The Party commends all these institutions for their dedication and deep sense of responsibility, and enjoins them to remain constant and resolute. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/01/19/yaradua-has-been-discharged-from-hospital-%E2%80%94-pdp/ |

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, created a spectacle at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos when his car broke down, as he was rushing to catch a flight. The drama started at about 1.30p.m., when the former president arrived at the Presidential/VIP lounge in a convoy of three cars, a Toyota Prado SUV, Mitsubishi SUV and a pick-up van. The Mitsubishi SUV that had the engine trouble was carrying Obasanjo’s luggage and two hefty men had to push it several distance, with all their might, before the engine began to cough. The aides had a tough battle with the navy blue car marked MU 297 KJA, after they had loaded Obasanjo’s bags and baggages into a private jet. Obasanjo, whose destination was not known, rode to the airport in the Prado, while the two other cars conveyed his aides and luggage. It took a lot of effort before the car could be driven out of the apron. The former president, who took the whole drama in his stride, had told reporters last year, at the airport that nothing on earth could cause him embarrassment. At that time, the vehicle carrying his aides and belongings broke down somewhere between Ota and the airport when he had a flight to catch. He did not speak to reporters, yesterday, about his plight as he moved on to board his flight. http://www.compassnews.net/Ng/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=38535:obasanjos-vehicle-breaks-down-in-lagos&catid=672:top-stories&Itemid=794 |
