Three men were killed by a gang of robbers who stormed Gbagalape village in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

It was learnt that the robbers, numbering over 60, arrived the village shouting ‘Mopol Area’ and shooting sporadically for about six hours.

One of the victims, Mrs Mimidoo Apeh, said the robbers were armed with guns, cutlasses and knives. They gained entrance through Nyanya.

Mimidoo, who narrated her experience, said, “It was around 12:09 a.m. when we started hearing gun shots coming in our direction and, in less then two minutes, my door was kicked open by six armed men asking my husband to bring money. My husband told them he didn’t have money. One of them asked him if he wanted to die, he said `no’. I saw them pointing gun to the head of my five-year-old son. So I quickly ran to bring out the money my husband gave me to buy foodstuffs. When I handed over the money to one of them, he said, “Is it this N12,000 that you slept with and locked the door?’ They left a message with my husband that he should be ready to bury his brother the next morning.

Little did we know that they had killed my brother-in-law, Timothy. There were so many of them that you could hear foot steps outside like soldiers on parade”.

Madam Theresa Thomas, another victim who lost her husband during the raid, narrated her story: “We heard gunshots outside and, in minutes, our door was kicked open. One of the robbers asked my husband if he was Mr. Thomas and he said yes. I heard a voice from outside, “kill him”, and the one inside pulled the trigger and shot my husband twice”. The man died.

Mrs Esther Sarwuan is also a victim. She works at Nyanya General Hospital. Esther is one of the women whose husbands were killed that night. She told her story: “My husband came back to the house at about 11:30 pm on Thursday, August 27 and slept off immediately.

“Around 12:30 am on Friday, August 28, I started hearing gunshots but I thought the shots were not anything to worry about. But shortly thereafter, I could hear the shooting getting closer and, unable to sleep, I woke my husband around 2am. The moment he heard the gunshots, his eyes cleared.

“My husband went outside as other neighbours also came out, but before they knew it, the robbers came in large number and all the men ran back to their rooms.

“About three of them came into our room and asked who was Hon Ternenge Sarwuan and my husband answered from the bedroom. They walked into the bedroom, asked him to lie down. I joined him lying down. Thereafter, my husband asked me to bring the money he kept with me and give to them. I sprang up. But out of shock and confusion, I forgot where I kept the money. One of the robbers asked me if he could assist to look for the money and I said yes. We both searched for the money and finally found it. They took the money.

“After giving them the money, I went back to where my husband was lying down. Little did I know that my seven year-old son had woken up and was staring at the robbers; so one of them was about to shoot my son. I turned immediately and dragged my son down and used my body as a cover for him and the bullet hit the wall.

“As they were stepping out, one of the robbers turned back and shot my husband”.

Another woman, Mrs. Dorcas Abraham, also lost her husband during the raid. She narrated: “The robbers kicked our door open, came in and started beating my husband without asking him for money or anything. And before I knew it, I heard a voice from outside, `If his name is Ibraham, kill him.’ That was how my husband was shot dead in my presence”.

Amadu Yaro is the Chairman of the vigilante group in Gbagalape village. He said: “We were at a wake keep when some young men ran to inform us about the gunshots. They said the gunmen they saw were more than a unit of the police and the military put together.

“As the gunshots got closer and closer, we ran in different directions. That was how some of us escaped death that night because we learnt that ten people were penciled down to be killed by the robbers.

“If not for the army and the police intervention, the worst could have happened that day. The robbers numbered over 60.

“I remember, in 2008, some robbers also came to this community in such large number. I was shot in that incident and I believe they were the same people that came back”.

The APC Chairman in the FCT, Hon Abbas Baba, paid a condolence visit to one of the victims. He condemned the killing of his member, Sarwuan.

According to him, government will do everything possible to bring the killers to book.

“This is a new government, it is a government that fights for justice. APC is solidly behind this family. I want to state categorically that with this party, the children of Sarwuan are not orphans. APC will stand and fight for them”.

When asked if he suspected the killing was political, Baba said, “The death of Hon Sarwuan looks suspicious. According to the wife, when the gunmen came, they were asking for the honourable because he was actually the target”.

Timothy Anadeyegh, the chief of the Tiv community living in Gbagalape, narrated his experience. He said: “At about 1a.m, we were at a wake keep when we stared hearing gunshots close by and those who were able to see them said that the armed robbers were over 60. Even the policemen and soldiers that came could not do much given the large number of the robbers and the sophisticated weapons they were carrying”.

Anadeyegh denied any political link to the killings.

FCT Police Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Anjuguri Manzah, told Sunday Vanguard 14 suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Crime / Shoot-out In Lagos: Police, Okada Riders In Fierce Battle For Supremacy by affiliate766(m): 7:03am On Sep 20, 2015

Hell was let loose at Festac area of Lagos State, last week, after operators of commercial motorcycle (popularly called okada), in their numbers, engaged a team of policemen in a fierce battle around 7th Avenue.

At the end of the shoot-out which lasted for over two hours, one of the motorcyclists was killed while others, including a policeman were severely wounded.

How the trouble started

Crime Guard gathered that trouble started brewing between the Police and okada riders after several reports were lodged at the Festac Police Division about the increasing reckless and criminal attitudes of commercial motorcyclists in and around the area. It was learnt that there had been series of serious complaints by residents of the area and visitors about the increasing number of the motorcyclists, coupled with their attendant dangers to other road users.

Jungle justice

Investigations revealed that they raised the alarm after it was noticed that, at the slightest provocation or brush with any motorist, the motorcyclists will invade the scene in large numbers and wreak havoc by either burning the vehicle or cannibalising it. “A few days ago, a Toyota Camry driven by a lady unavoidably brushed the motorcycle ridden by one dishevelled rider”, one of the residents told Crime Guard. “Before one could say Jack Robinson, no fewer than 200 okada riders gathered there in sympathy and before the lady could utter a word, her brand new car was set ablaze in broad daylight. After wreaking the havoc, the jubilant dirty fellows fled in different directions, leaving the lady helpless. Some even rough handled her.”

Criminal activities

The motorcyclists were alleged to be engaged in all sorts of criminal acts. Police sources said reports indicated that they normally trail people that go to banks to cash money and end up dispossessing them of their hard-earned money. According to one of the sources, “Recently, they waylaid a police patrol team at 4th and 5th Avenue and succeeded in killing one Corporal Emmanuel Emefiele while four of his colleagues escaped death narrowly but with serious wounds.

It was an unprovoked attack. They just sighted the patrol team and laid ambush for them. As soon as the policemen approached the spot where they normally park their motorcycles, they went haywire, attacking them with all sorts of dangerous weapons. Police later succeeded in arresting the suspected killers identified as Tari Vadaya Gau and Jona Vadiya. They were transferred to the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (SCIID), from where they were remanded in prison custody.

Police joint operation

Based on these ugly developments, Crime Guard gathered that a combined team of crack police squad from both the Area Command and Festac Division swung into action by embarking on a joint operation aimed at dislodging the motorcyclists and putting a stop to their increasing menace.

KoloOyinbo:

There are already laws for people who openly outrage public decency. You cant make love to your girlfriend in public etc. So why do we need special laws that are so primitive and savage? Also this disgusting regulation encourages snoopers and judgemental busybodies. It has no place in any civilized society!

Now Nigeria makes a fool of itself in the eyes of the world by prohibiting two males sharing a hotel room! This applies even to NON GAYS! Are you so afraid that you have to go to these ridiculous lengths?

No as long as they are not having sex in public why is actually WRONG with public acceptance? Civilized countries have accepted gays without any adverse consequences so don't be afraid.

Lets tell the truth! Some ignorant fools just want to impose their prejudices on others no matter how innocent.

I don't like to see Black girls bleach their skin - I find it offensive and degrading for them - BUT IT IS THEIR RIGHT!

I don't like to see people dress in certain manners or behave in certain ways but it is their right.

So some idiot freaks when he sees two guys or two girls kiss? Idiots!
There are some things that are morally wrong, whether you like it or not if you see a man having s*x with a man your first response would be antagonist so why fight your natural stereotype
If gays are glitches in human DNA it is possiblet for the gay character to be eliminated bus common natural selection.people who Are non-gAY WILL ALWAYS FIGHT GAY PEOPLE UNTIL ONE IS ELIMINATED IT IS OUR NATURAL CODDING

Science/Technology / Gene Therapy That Cures Mice Might Cure Deaf Children by affiliate766(m): 7:32am On Sep 11, 2015

Someday, it may be possible to cure children of deafness caused by a gene defect.

Researchers at Boston’s Children’s Hospital in Massachusetts are developing a cure for inherited deafness by introducing a working copy of a hearing gene.

The defective gene is located in the inner ear. Researchers engineered a harmless cold virus to deliver the corrected gene deep inside the ear canal.

“Our strategy was to take a viral vector, remove the viral genes so that it doesn’t make anyone sick, and to replace those with the correct DNA sequence for TMC1,” said Jeffrey Holt, lead researcher on the project

The gene, TMC1, is essential for hearing. It encodes proteins that convert sound into electrical signals the brain can recognize and process.

“We found that we can restore function in both cases for recessive and dominant forms of TMC1 mutations,” he said.

Recessive or dominant forms of deafness depend upon whether the defective hearing gene is inherited from one or both parents.

To see whether their genetic repair worked, researchers used two types of deaf mice — each a model of dominant and recessive hearing loss.

They used the cold virus, known as adeno-associated virus, to carry a functioning TMC1 gene into the inner ears of the mice.

Researchers found they could repair the mutated hearing gene; but, to tell whether the treated mice could actually hear, they had to put the rodents in a specially designed chamber with sensors that played really loud noise.

“We can’t really ask a mouse if they are able to hear but we can play a loud, sudden sound and a normal mouse will jump in response to that," said Holt. "A deaf mouse does not move at all, but after our gene therapy treatment, the deaf mice began to jump.”

One in 1,000 people goes deaf in adolescence, according to Holt. He said inherited deafness can be caused by any one of 70 genes.

Researchers say they hope the genetic technique that helped the deaf mice to hear can cure all inherited forms of deafness in children
Science/Technology / A New Way To Attack Malarial Parasites In Blood Cells by affiliate766(m): 7:14am On Sep 11, 2015

Researchers from Yale University detail a new way to attack malarial parasites in blood cells.

Yale University researchers have found a new way to slow the development of malarial parasites within blood cells they infect, even in some drug-resistant strains that are on the rise in many parts of the world.

Malarial parasites are transmitted to humans by some species of mosquitoes that feed on blood. Almost 2 million people annually are sickened by malaria and more than 600,000 die.

“Drug resistant strains are becoming a very serious problems in places like Southeast Asia,” said Yale professor Sidney Altman, a Nobel laureate and senior author of the study.

Altman’s lab identified a way to easily modify genes of the malaria parasite P. falciparum to interfere with development of the parasite within blood cells, which the organisms destroy, causing severe anemia. The technique slowed development of parasite even in strains resistant to two common forms of drug treatment.
