Delta: Police Rescue Kidnapped Victims, Recover Local Gun

No fewer than three kidnapped victims have been rescued by men of Delta State Police Command along Warri-Sapele road after a gun battle with the kidnapped suspects.

The victims were rescued on December 31, 2022, at 0120 hours as police operatives attached to Orerokpe Division on patrol duty between Okuvo and Egborede communities spotted some persons being dragged into the bush by unknown forces.

In a coordinated attempt to unravel the situation, the hoodlums later abandoned their victims and ran away as they could not contain gun pressure from the police they engaged in a shootout.

20-Year-Old Man Jailed For Destroying Campaign Billboard In Plateau

A 20-year-old man, Gabriel Orupou has bagged two years jail term with an option of a fine of N100,000 for demolishing a campaign billboard.

The Area Court in Bukuru, in the Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State found him guilty as charged on December 19, 2022.

The campaign billboard destroyed by the convict wears on campaign messages of the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State.

Pretense Or Real? Tallen Weeps Over FG Inability To Rescue Leah Sharibu

The Minister of Women Affairs, Paulen Tallen, has wept over the inability of the Nigerian government and military forces to rescue Leah Sharibu who was kidnapped along more than 100 Chibok Schoolgirls by Boko Haram terrorist group.

Sharibu Leah is still in captivity after several years. She was abducted along with 109 other girls on February 19, 2018 from Government Girls Science and Technical School in Dapchi, Yobe State.

The conduct of Sterling Global – an oil firm with its branches in Kwale, Ndokwa West Local Government Area and Okpai, Ndokwa East Local Government Area is devious.

It’s alarming as government at all levels could not bridle, and regulate the dreadful activities of Sterling Global that have thronged the region into torments. One confusing trait is the silence of Ndokwa leaders on SEEPCO’s exploitation and reticence to give attention to the host communities.

Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO) has been outwitted the State government and relevant authorities in position of oil activities. Suffice it to let out that the Delta State Ministry of Oil and Gas has failed completely in its areas of responsibilities. Six Armed Robbery, Kidnapped Suspects In Vigilante Disguise Arrested In Delta

Delta State Police Command have arrested six suspected armed robbers and kidnappers operating in Ekpan-Warri axis who disguised as vigilantes and hunters to actualize their criminal intentions.

The suspects were arrested on December 15, 2022, along Jakpa Road at 8:00pm prompt by the police officers attached to Ekpan Police Division who were deployed on patrol prior to series of robbery and kidnapped cases incidented at the division.

According to a Release made available to newsmen by the state command public relations officer, DSP Edafe Bright, the police, upon suspicion accosted a Toyota Sienna with six male occupants and subjected it to a thorough search which led to recovery of guns and other weapons.

Three of suspects who could not give account of themselves, matched the descriptions of individuals who had reported robbery and kidnapped cases at the Ekpan Police Station. The suspects will face the full weight of law.

World Bank Wants FG To Prioritise Statistical Surveys Funding (See Why)

The World Bank has asked the federal government of Nigeria to give prominence to statistical data gathering by prioritizing funding for research data for national development.

The Apex Bank who stated that data are crucial to national development, urged government to include it in her priority list.

Shocking: Debt Servicing To Consume 123 Percent Of 2023 Revenue

The World Bank has predicted that debt servicing will swallow up to 123.4 per cent of the Federal Government’s revenue in 2023. The new World Bank Lead Economist for Nigeria, Alex Sienaert, made the prediction in a document he entitled, ‘Nigeria Public Finance Review: Fiscal Adjustment for Better and Sustainable Development Results.’

Sienaert noted that servicing of debt would consume 100.2 per cent of Federal Government revenue by the end of 2022. In a related development, the Washington-based bank explained that Nigeria’s debt service to revenue ratio could be at 102.3 per cent by the end of 2022.

A statement by the Debt Management Office further submitted that the total public debt stock went from N42.84tn in the second quarter to N44.06tn in the third quarter of 2022. This was an indication of 2.85 per cent increase quarter-on-quarter, with Nigeria securing a N1.22tn debt within three months.

The Debt Management Office stressed that the increase in public debt was due to new borrowings by the Federal Government to part-finance the deficit in the 2022 Appropriation Act, alongside new borrowings by sub-nationals.

Ndokwa Extraction Protests Against SEEPCO Negligence, Demands Justice

The people of Ndokwa/Ukwani extraction has staged a peaceful protest against Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO) over its failure to stick to the directives of the Delta State Government to settle the lingering cases with the host communities amicably.

The warning protest which played out in the early hours of Saturday, December 17, 2022, was carried out by a group of women who blocked the company’s entrance, calling on SEEPCO to have regards for human life and clean up the environment messed up by the oil spill.

The women in their large numbers displayed play-cards with various inscriptions including “SEEPCO Clean Up Our Environments,” “Pipeline Leakage is Killing Us,” and “Our waters and lands are polluted.”

Wike Signs N555.6 Billion 2023 Appropriation Bill Into Law

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has signed into law the 2023 Appropriation Bill N555, 666,987, 238 (Five Hundred and Fifty Five Billion, Six Hundred and Sixty Six Million, Nine Hundred and Eighty Seven Thousand, Two Hundred and Thirty Eight Naira only.)

Governor Wike also gave assent to the Rivers State Child’s Rights Bill No.6 of 2022, which will protect all children in the State from all forms of abuse.

Breaking: Delta Govt Orders SEEPCO To Address Issues With Host Communities

Following the outburst of oil producing communities over gross negligence, the Delta State Government has directed oil firms operating in the area, particularly, Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production (SEEPCO) to resolve all pending issues with host communities.

The State Government who gave the direction through the State Ministry of Oil and Gas urged SEEPCO to settle pending issues relating to negligence with Chief G.E Ikwuobodo who was gravely affected by oil spill.

Recall that Chief Ikwuobodo has recently cried out over the failure of SEEPCO to honour the decision reached in a meeting with the state commissioner for ministry of oil and gas and the company’s representatives on September 05, 2022, to compensate him for the damage occasioned by the oil pipe leakage.

It was verified that SEEPCO’s pipeline passed through Chief G.E Ikwuobodo’s compound at Okpai Oluchi in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State.

Sequel to the gross negligence of the oil producing communities, particularly, Ndokwa region by the Oil Companies, the federal government has been called upon steer up measures in checkmating the conducts of Oil Companies operating in the area.

The call became imperative following the wanton activities of Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Company Limited, popularly known as Sterling Global against the host communities.

Sterling Global has desecrating Ndokwa lands and waters through oil exploitation without adhering to ethical standards of oil exploration and oil and gas laws.

It was gathered that the company has not carried out proper clean-up on the environments resulting in various pipeline leakages in Okpai-Oluchi, Ndokwa East Local Government Area, Delta State.

It was further gathered that the Sterling Global has over twelve oil spillage in the community. Yet, no reasonable effort was put in place to arrest the situation.

Africa Investigative Magazine learnt that Sterling Global’s facilities (pipeline) cut across the communities in Ndokwa land including Okpai-Oluchi and anybody has been compensated for its protection for over eight years.

Okpai-Oluch is located in the Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State. It is an oil producing community. There are so many oil companies operating there. Like Agip who has been there for long. They operated peacefully. The community hosted them without giving them any trouble.

Oil Spillage: Delta Govt Backing Oil Companies To Flout MoU In Ndokwa Nation

One would be tempted to ask if Delta State government is backing the oil companies to flout agreement on environmental protection and other social responsibilities. The question is impetuous following the negligence suffered by Ndokwa people at great magnitude. The people of Ndokwa East and West Local Government Areas have been at risk of consuming polluted water as a result of SEEPCO’s refusal to carry out a proper oil spill clean up.

It is eminent that questions be directed to Sterling, an oil firm in Ndokwa land and Delta State Hon Commissioner for Oil & Gas whose responsibility is to sanction the erring Company following various reports and agreement reached in a meeting at his Office in Asaba on September 05, 2022.

It was unfortunate that the company flouted the agreement reached at his office amongst which were for a compensation to be paid to me, before Sterling can go ahead to carry out a proper maintenance, cleanup and remediation.

Meanwhile, after the meeting, no word was heard from Sterling Oil Company. I once again took the pain (after being cajoled) to withdraw the matter from Court so they can carryout our agreement. Yet, nothing is done even as I have forwarded four copies of letter in reminder to both the Company and Ministry of Oil & Gas informing them of the upcoming flood, and that its impact would be deadly if a cleanup isn’t carried out.

Debt: Court Orders CBN To Deduct N40 Billion Ebonyi Allocation

The court also directed Ebonyi State Government to pay the firm, Andrew Bishopton Nig Ltd and its partners, Mauritz Walton Nig Ltd, the sum of N118,787,380.00 and other sums over failure to adhere to the terms and conditions of the contract.

The court mandated CBN to withdraw the sum of US29,854,856.9 and another N30,100,000,000.00 from the state’s accounts and remit to the same company.

It was learned that the Ebonyi State Government contracted the company in 2016 to pursue and recover monies illegally deducted on both its foreign and local loans and facilities especially the Paris club refund.

The company approached the court over the Ebonyi State Government’s unwillingness to comply with terms.

Alcohol Senator: Orji Kalu Expresses Displeasure Over Beer Ban At W’Cup Stadium

The senator representing Abia North at the National Assembly, Orji Kalu, has expressed his displeasure over the ban of beer at 2022 World Cup stadiums.

The senator who expressed his position on social media, said the ban on alcohol at Qatar’s World Cup stadiums is unnecessary.

He said the football governing body could have considered the interest of football fans before placing ban on alcohol.

“Should consider the impact this ban will have upon those who follow soccer with great passion. Soccer is secular. It knows no religion, culture or tribe.

“The visiting fans will be disappointed that they can’t watch the beautiful round of leather game with a can of Budweiser, Heineken or Guinness at hand. Having signed a $75m sponsorship agreement with FIFA, Budweiser may not take this major breach of contract for granted.

UK Speaks On Possible Return Of Nigerian Artefacts

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, has assured that the return of Benin artefacts to Nigeria, saying that the United Kingdom UK government has facilitated the return of many of the artefacts.

Catriona Laing who disclosed this in Abuja, noted that British Government has mandated the institutions and facilities in possession of the Benin artefacts to return them to Nigeria.

Hear her: “In terms of the returns, in the UK, we have a slightly different system in some countries. So, it is the individual Museum, the trustees of that museum, who decide on whether they can return or want to return artefacts.

“So for example, the Horniman Museum in the UK recently returned 72 Benin artifacts, Cambridge University returned the cockerel, called The Okukor, a beautiful cultural heritage.

“So, we are encouraging them to think actively about this. They are, obviously. When something is returned, it has to obviously be put into a place where we can ensure that it will be well protected.

Domestic Violence: Minister Seeks Redress Over Death Of 11-Year Old Maid

The Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen has expressed dismay over to the death of an 11-year-old housemaid in Plateau State.

The maid whose name was given as Margaret died as a result of domestic violence championed by her guardian, Ms. Edozie Nwachukwu, in Vom, Jos South Local Government Area of the state.

According to a statement obtained by Africa Investigative Magazine, the domestic staff ran to her neighbour who quickly took her to the hospital after Nwachukwu allegedly poured hot water on her buttocks.

The maid was later, transferred to Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), where she gave up on ghosts due to the loss of blood.

The Minister, however, condemned the act, warning that such atrocities committed by guardians against domestic staff must not be tolerated.

2022 W’Cup: Ecuador Trashes Qatar 2-0 In Opening Game
