He was saving money in the bank and could not pay pensioners despite the economic hardship and poverty he unleashed on the people of Anambra!

The Nigeria Democratic Congress has received more than 1,000 defection letters from members of the All Progressives Congress across the Delta North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The figure was disclosed by the former Convener of the Delta Coalition for Equity, Chief Alex Ikpeazu, who led the defectors into the NDC during a formal reception in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, on Monday.

Ikpeazu said the group had received more than 1,000 letters from APC members indicating their intention to leave the party and join the NDC.

He said the development reflected growing dissatisfaction among some APC members and political stakeholders in Delta North, particularly over what he described as years of marginalisation, deprivation and neglect of the senatorial district.

“We have received over 1,000 defection letters from people who want to join the NDC,” Ikpeazu said.

The defectors comprised former party leaders, political stakeholders and members of the Delta Coalition for Equity.

They pledged to mobilise their supporters for the NDC ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly for the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and its Delta State governorship candidate, Yovwaye Chris.

Receiving the new members, the NDC state chairman, Dr Oyidobo Richmond, described their arrival as a major boost to the party’s structure in Delta State.

Richmond urged the defectors to return to their respective wards and local government areas and begin grassroots mobilisation ahead of the elections.

He assured them that the party would treat all members equally, regardless of when they joined the NDC.

I am deeply disturbed by the attack on the convoy of our presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as he travelled to Benue State.

The deliberate mobilisation of unruly elements to block and attack his convoy and prevent him from entering Makurdi marks another dark day for our democracy.

Authorities must remember that the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to freedom of movement. This right applies even more strongly to Mr Obi, a former governor and leading opposition figure.

The Benue State Government must, as a matter of urgency, ensure that those responsible are swiftly identified and prosecuted. It must also guarantee the safety and free movement of our candidate and his entourage.

I further urge the President to caution state governors, particularly those in his party against any actions that could undermine the sanctity of our democracy.

I also call on the international community, including diplomatic missions and election observation groups, to take note of this incident and to urge Nigerian authorities to uphold the rule of law, protect opposition leaders, and safeguard democratic freedoms. - RMK
