AdvertsLocal Souvenir Bags In Nigeria For Any Occasion by AfricanThings(op): 5:19pm On May 29
Planning an event in Nigeria is a massive project. Whether it’s a wedding, a corporate AGM, or a milestone burial, a birthday celebration, one thing is certain: your guests expect a memorable souvenir.

Plastic buckets and generic plastic hand fans are okay, but if you want to give a gift that people will actually keep, use, and remember you by, custom souvenir bags are the absolute best choice. They are practical, stylish, and durable.

As a leading souvenir and bag manufacturer in Nigeria, African Things designs high-quality, locally produced souvenir bags that fit any event budget. Here is a breakdown of the best souvenir bags for different occasions and how to use them.

1. Weddings & Traditional Marriages (Owanbe!)

Weddings are all about celebration and showing appreciation to your guests for matching your *Aso Ebi*. A standard plastic nylon just doesn't do justice to the effort your guests put in.

Best Bag Types: Custom Tote Bags, Ankara-infused drawstring bags, or elegant canvas gift bags.
The Use Case: Instead of sharing multiple tiny items, pack all your wedding favors (custom jotters, keychains, or snacks) into a single, beautifully branded tote bag. Your guests will reuse these bags for grocery shopping, casual outings, and church services for years to come.

2. Corporate Events, AGMs & Conferences

When representing your brand, NGOs, or corporate organizations, the quality of your souvenir reflects the quality of your company.

Best Bag Types: Branded Laptop Sleeves, Professional Backpacks, and Executive Conference Bags.
The Use Case: Hand these out to participants, VIP guests, or employees at annual general meetings (AGMs), seminars, or corporate milestone celebrations. A high-quality laptop bag branded with your logo keeps your company top-of-mind every single day the recipient goes to work.

3. School Graduations & Inter-House Sports

Schools and educational institutions need souvenirs that can withstand the daily rough-and-tumble of student life.

Best Bag Types: Durable School Bags, Branded Lunch Bags, and Kids' Backpacks.
The Use Case: Perfect as graduation gifts for outgoing students or prizes during Inter-House sports and speech-and-prize-giving days. Custom school bags with the school's logo act as moving billboards for your institution across town.

4. Funerals & Burial Celebrations (Celebration of Life)

In Nigeria, burial ceremonies are a deep part of our culture, used to honor a life well-lived. Souvenirs here serve as a lasting keepsake.

Best Bag Types: Utility Pouches, Medium Tote Bags, or Drawstring Backpacks.
The Use Case: These bags are usually customized with a respectful picture of the deceased, alongside their birth and transition dates. Because they are highly durable, family members and guests will use them for years, keeping the memory of your loved one alive.

5. Birthdays, Anniversaries & End-of-Year Parties

From 1st birthdays to 50th golden jubilees, or company end-of-year parties, custom bags add an extra layer of excitement.

Best Bag Types: Trendy Backpacks, Casual Crossbody Bags, or Souvenir Tote Bags.
The Use Case: For children's birthdays, custom goodie-bag backpacks filled with treats are always a massive hit. For adult anniversaries, sleek, everyday backpacks or travel pouches make your event the talk of the town.

If you are looking for an affordable, reliable, and high-quality souvenir/bag shop in Lagos that can handle massive bulk orders with tight deadlines, we’ve got you covered.

Locally Manufactured: Proudly made in Nigeria with top-tier durability.

BusinessSourcing School Bags In Nigeria: What Are Smart Schools And Retailers Doing? by AfricanThings(op): 12:50pm On Jan 14
With the current exchange rate, importing bags from overseas has become a major headache for business owners. Not only are prices skyrocketing, but the quality often leaves parents complaining by mid-term. This is why many school owners and retailers are now shifting focus to quality school bags made right here at home.

If you are preparing for the back to school bag season or looking to restock your shop, here is a guide on how to source the best Nigeria made school bag options without breaking the bank.

1. Durability Over Shiny Imports

A handmade school bag produced locally is often built tougher for the Nigerian environment. By using quality materials and construction specifically focused on heavy-duty polyesters and reinforced stitching, these bags handle the weight of heavy textbooks much better than mass-produced imports.

2. Choosing Between Plain and Branded

Depending on your business model, you need to know your options:

- Plain backpacks without branding: These are ideal for retailers who want to sell to the general public or NGOs that need versatile gear for outreaches.
- Branded school bags: Most schools now want their logos on their bags. Sourcing wholesale school bags for primary, secondary, and universities that can be customized at the source saves you a massive amount of money and time.

3. The Cultural Edge: Ankara Style

There is a massive and growing demand for Ankara school bags. They give schools a unique identity and are a hit with parents who want something different. Whether you need quality school bags for kids or trendy school bags for university in Nigeria, incorporating local prints is a major selling point.

4. Sourcing at Wholesale Rates in Lagos, Nigeria

To keep your profit margins high, you need to move closer to the source. Finding a supplier with ready-to-ship inventory in Lagos is key to avoiding the long wait times of importation. Look for bulk purchase options that offer affordable wholesale pricing so you can stay competitive in the market.

Why Local Manufacturing is Currently Winning

- Speed: There is no waiting for months for containers to clear.
- Customization: You can get exactly what your school or brand needs.
- Price: School bags in Nigeria are becoming more cost-effective as import duties rise.

For the school owners and retailers here: Have you noticed parents complaining more about bag quality lately? Are you sticking with imports or going local this session? Let's talk.

Nairalanders, abeg, let's talk.

We've all been to weddings. We've all collected the "souvenirs." Omo, the amount of plastic buckets, low-quality hand fans, and biros that I've collected... my kitchen cabinet is full.

Sometimes, the couple spends money, but half the guests "forget" their souvenir on the table.

But what if a souvenir was so funny, so strange, or so useful that you'd actually fight to get one?

I've been thinking about this, and I'm compiling a list of Funny BUT Cool Wedding Souvenir Ideas. The kind of things that make you laugh, and then say, "Ah, this person try!"

HealthShea Butter Benefits Vs. Myths: What Actually Works by AfricanThings(op): 2:22pm On Oct 28, 2025
Pure African shea butter is one of West Africa's best-kept beauty secrets—but not everything you've heard about it is true. While this natural ingredient delivers real, science-backed benefits for skin and hair, common myths online could leave you disappointed.

Let's separate fact from fiction so you can use authentic shea butter effectively.

What Makes African Shea Butter Special?

Raw shea butter from West Africa contains 85-90% fatty acids and up to 20% unsaponifiable matter—packed with vitamins A and E, triterpene compounds, and anti-inflammatory agents. This unique composition explains why it's been treasured for centuries throughout Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

Important note: Unrefined shea butter retains 100% of these beneficial compounds. Refined versions lose up to 75% of their nutrients during processing. When shopping for quality shea butter, look for that characteristic nutty, earthy scent—it signals the nutrients are intact.

What Shea Butter Actually Does (Science-Backed)

1. Relieves Eczema and Dermatitis

Clinical studies show shea butter significantly reduces eczema symptoms within 4 weeks. In one study, 74% of children with atopic dermatitis rated treatment results as "very good" or "good." The anti-inflammatory compounds work at a cellular level to calm irritated skin and reduce redness.

2. Repairs Your Skin's Moisture Barrier—Fast

Within just 2 hours of application, shea butter helps skin recover from water loss. After 3-4 hours, your skin barrier function measurably improves. This makes it ideal for dry skin, cracked heels, chapped lips, and dry hands.

3. Reduces Inflammation

The triterpene compounds in shea butter inhibit inflammatory enzymes and block inflammatory cytokines. This means real relief for conditions like psoriasis, rosacea, and general skin irritation.

4. Supports Tattoo Healing

The combination of deep moisturization and anti-inflammatory action makes shea butter excellent for tattoo aftercare. Apply 2-3 times daily after initial healing to keep colors vibrant and prevent scabbing.

Looking for authentic, unrefined African shea butter? At African Things, we source pure, raw shea butter directly from West African producers in Nigeria and Ghana. Our shea butter retains the full spectrum of beneficial compounds that make this ingredient so effective.

The Biggest Shea Butter Myths—Debunked

❌ Myth 1: Shea Butter Works as Sunscreen

The Truth: Shea butter has an SPF of only 3-7—nowhere near the SPF 30+ dermatologists recommend. While it contains compounds that absorb some UV radiation, it provides roughly 77-86% below minimum protection standards.

Dr. Purvisha Patel, board-certified dermatologist, confirms: "Shea butter has an estimated SPF of 3 to 4. This is not enough sun protection to prevent hyperpigmentation, DNA damage, skin cancers, or wrinkles."
What to do: Use shea butter as your moisturizer, then apply separate SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen before sun exposure.

❌ Myth 2: Shea Butter Lightens or Darkens Skin

The Truth: Shea butter does neither. It contains no bleaching agents and cannot alter your natural skin tone.
The "darkening" myth usually occurs when people apply shea butter without sunscreen and then spend time in the sun—UV rays cause tanning, not the shea butter. The "lightening" myth comes from confusion about moisturization making skin look more radiant.
What it actually does: Makes skin appear more even-toned and healthy through optimal hydration. For actual dark spots or hyperpigmentation, proven ingredients like vitamin C or kojic acid work far more effectively.

❌ Myth 3: Shea Butter Makes Hair Grow Faster

The Truth: There's no scientific evidence that shea butter accelerates hair growth or stimulates follicles. Your hair grows at its genetically predetermined rate—about 0.5 inches per month—regardless of what you apply.
Dr. Azadeh Shirazi, board-certified dermatologist, explains: "Shea butter helps strengthen the hair shaft and reduce breakage, which in turn helps with healthier hair that may grow better and longer."
What it actually does: Prevents breakage and split ends, helping you retain length. This creates the appearance of faster growth, but the actual growth rate remains unchanged.

❌ Other False Claims to Ignore:

Breast enlargement: Completely false—no scientific evidence supports this

Cellulite reduction: No studies back this claim

Direct cough treatment: It works as a nasal decongestant when applied to the nose, but doesn't treat coughs directly

How to Use Pure Shea Butter Effectively

For Your Face: Apply sparingly to damp skin at night after cleansing. Works beautifully for dry and combination skin. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, patch test first—while generally non-comedogenic, it can clog pores in some individuals.

For Your Body: Apply within minutes of showering while skin is still slightly damp. This seals in water and creates long-lasting moisture. Focus on dry areas like elbows, knees, and heels.

For Your Lips: Apply as needed throughout the day. The vitamin K prevents bleeding from cracks while vitamins E and F seal in moisture.

For Hair: Use as a deep conditioning treatment. Apply to damp hair focusing on ends, not roots. Helps prevent breakage and keeps hair moisturized.

For Specific Conditions:

Eczema: Apply 2-3 times daily consistently
Cracked heels: Apply generously overnight with cotton socks
Nails and cuticles: Massage in nightly to strengthen and prevent hangnails

Where to Get Quality Raw Shea Butter in Lagos

Finding authentic unrefined shea butter makes all the difference. At African Things in Lagos, we specialize in genuine African-inspired natural products, including raw shea butter sourced directly from West African communities. Our shea butter retains the ivory to light yellow color, natural nutty scent, and slightly grainy texture that indicate quality and purity.

Whether you're looking to buy shea butter in bulk in Nigeria for personal use or for your business, we ensure you're getting the real deal—not refined versions that have lost their beneficial properties.

Pure African shea butter delivers real benefits as an intensive moisturizer, anti-inflammatory treatment, and skin barrier protector. Clinical studies confirm its effectiveness for eczema, dermatitis, dry skin, and overall skin health.

But it cannot replace sunscreen, change your skin tone, or accelerate hair growth. When you understand what shea butter actually does—based on science rather than myths—you can incorporate this incredible West African ingredient effectively into your routine.
Remember: Choose unrefined shea butter, apply consistently, always use separate sunscreen, and give it time (most benefits appear after 2-4 weeks of regular use).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can shea butter be used as a sunscreen?

No. Shea butter has a natural SPF of only 3-7, far below the minimum SPF 30 recommended by dermatologists. It cannot prevent sun damage or skin cancer on its own. Always use separate broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen. You can use shea butter as your moisturizer before sunscreen.

Does shea butter lighten or darken skin?

No, it does neither. Shea butter contains no bleaching agents to lighten skin, nor does it have properties that darken it. The "darkening" myth occurs when people apply it without sunscreen and get sun exposure—UV rays cause tanning, not the shea butter.

Does shea butter grow hair?

No. There's no scientific evidence that shea butter accelerates hair growth or stimulates follicles. What it does is improve hair health by preventing breakage and split ends, which helps you retain length. This can create the appearance of faster growth, but the actual growth rate remains unchanged.

Can I use shea butter on my face?

Yes, especially for dry, mature, or sensitive skin. Raw shea butter retains beneficial vitamins A and E for anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. Apply sparingly to clean, damp skin. Those with oily or acne-prone skin should use caution and patch test first.

Is shea butter good for dark spots or scars?

Shea butter may modestly improve the appearance of dark spots and scars over 4-6 months through vitamin A (cell turnover) and anti-inflammatory effects. However, it's not a primary treatment—proven ingredients like vitamin C or hydroquinone work more effectively.

Is shea butter good for eczema?

Yes, highly effective. Clinical studies show it significantly reduces eczema symptoms, with 74% of users rating results as "very good" or "good" after 4 weeks. The anti-inflammatory compounds soothe irritation and repair damaged skin barrier.

Is shea butter good for lips?

Yes, excellent for lip care. It provides intensive moisturization, creates a protective barrier against harsh weather, and vitamins E, F, and K help heal cracks and keep lips soft. Apply as needed or as a base before lipstick.

Is shea butter good for feet and cracked heels?

Yes, highly effective. It provides intensive repair of severe dryness and softens calluses. For best results, apply generously before bed and wear cotton socks overnight. Expect visible improvement within 3 days.

Can I use shea butter as a daily body moisturizer?

Yes, absolutely. Shea butter is an excellent natural alternative to commercial lotions, especially for dry, sensitive, or mature skin. It melts at body temperature and provides long-lasting hydration. Apply to damp skin right after bathing for best results.

Is shea butter good for all skin tones?

Yes, excellent for all skin tones. Its benefits aren't dependent on melanin levels. For Black skin, it provides deep nourishment and prevents ashy appearance. For lighter skin tones, it offers the same powerful moisturizing and anti-inflammatory benefits. The antioxidants (vitamins A and E) help repair sun damage for all complexions.

What's the difference between refined and unrefined shea butter?

Unrefined (raw) shea butter retains 100% of its beneficial compounds—vitamins, fatty acids, and anti-inflammatory agents. Refined shea butter has been processed with heat and chemicals, destroying up to 75% of these nutrients. Always choose unrefined for maximum benefits.

Is shea butter good for breast enlargement?

No, this is completely false. No scientific study supports claims that shea butter can enlarge breasts or any body part. Any temporary firmness is simply skin-tightening from moisturization, not actual tissue growth.

Can I use body butter (shea-based) on my hair?

Yes, though it's formulated for skin. Apply to damp hair focusing on ends, not roots, to avoid greasiness. Use sparingly as it can cause buildup. It works best for thick, curly, or coarse hair types. Hair-specific products are preferable for better absorption.

FashionAfrican Things: Redefining Africa, One Gift At A Time by AfricanThings(op): 4:26pm On Jan 11, 2025
Africa is a land of immense beauty, culture, and creativity, yet for far too long, it has been defined by a single, narrow narrative. At African Things, we believe it’s time for a change.

Born from a deep desire to challenge stereotypes and empower local artisans, African Things is more than a brand—it’s a movement. It started in 2013 when I realized how much of the world misunderstood Africa. My experiences studying abroad opened my eyes to the skewed perceptions many hold about our continent, and I knew I had to do something about it.

What began as a small reselling venture during my NYSC year has grown into a full-fledged business, thanks to the unwavering support of Nigerians and a pivotal $5,000 grant from the Tony Elumelu Foundation in 2015. Today, African Things showcases the best of African craftsmanship, creating culturally inspired gift items that resonate with people worldwide. From handmade jewelry to corporate gifts, every piece tells a story of African pride, resilience, and innovation.

We’ve come a long way—from being featured in over 35 stores across Nigeria to now having our own flagship store in Banex Mall, Oniru Lekki, Lagos. And this is just the beginning. Our dream is to expand globally, establishing more branches internationally and bringing African heritage to homes and hearts around the world.
