Nigeria has produced some of the biggest names in the fighting world.
From Israel Adesanya, Anthony Joshua and Kamaru Usman, a lot of fighters in the UFC and WBC have roots traceable back to Nigeria.

Little wonder we boast of a sport more deadly than the UFC and native to northern Nigeria. Dambe is a sport that is very similar to the MMA but has a few twists that make it unique.
You can only strike with one wrapped hand, and block or parry with the other.

The Ufc Welterweight champion Kamaru paid Nigeria a visit and shared how this was really exciting in comparison with the UFC.

In celebration of his victory over Covington, Nigeria's own Usman Kamaru is the talk of the sporting world even as he remains one of the most decorated and long reigning fighters of all time.

Asides his striking personality in the rings, he is also a very cultured man and showed this by visiting Northern Nigeria to watch our own indigenous martial arts called Dambe.

A lot of people already know the art of traditional wrestling. But do you know Dambe? Do you know how deadly it is?

Kamaru Usman even admitted that he had not experienced anything like it and hopes it gets the world spotlight it deserves.

Have you ever wondered if Africans have their own martial arts?

Well, it turns out we do.

Dambe is one of the oldest forms of combat in the World. It is an ancient form of fighting that is native to the northern parts of Nigeria but has roots that trace back to ancient Egypt.

Dambe is like African mixed martial arts but so much more intense and less “scripted” in its execution.

The primary weapon in Dambe is the fist of a warriors’ dominant hand, which is wrapped in rope and used for landing punches. The other hand is used for blocking and measuring distance. Competitors can also use their legs for kicking and sweeping.

Historically, Dambe was a means of preparing for war, and this legacy lives on today. The lead hand is referred to as ‘the spear’ and the unwrapped hand is called the shield. A knockdown or knockout is called a ‘kill’.

This sport is hosted in different parts of Nigeria and African Warriors majorly hosts this in Enugu, Kano, and Abuja
