President Muhammadu Buhari has described as false reports which claimed he had earlier declared that former Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, was not guilty of the corruption allegations leveled against him.

Buhari, speaking through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, stated this on Monday during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“You didn’t get it right; the President had no time said anybody was not guilty. What the President said then was that he was not given the right to defend himself,” he said.

Contrary to claims that the President was defending the sacked SGF, Adesina said President Buhari was not pleased with the process adopted by the legislature for the accusation of Lawal.

The Federal Government may consider increasing workers’ remuneration package, especially bonuses of certain government agencies, instead of increasing wages across board the Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo has said.

According to a written report made available to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, the Vice-President spoke during a session titled, ‘Conversation with the Vice-President’ at the 2017 Nigerian Bar Association National Conference held in Lagos on Monday.

Osinbajo said though the issue of better pay for workers was a good suggestion, the government was “in a bind of sorts.”

He said at the moment, the government was spending 70 per cent of its revenues on remuneration and overheads, leaving less than 30 per cent for capital expenditure.

He said while it was correct that the country needed a more efficient civil service that would be paid more, there was also the need to increase revenues.

Reports have it that the meeting of the Federal Executive Council that holds every Wednesday will not hold today.

Today would have afforded President Muhammadu Buhari who returned to the country on Saturday the opportunity of presiding over the council meeting for the first time in over three months.

The Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi yesterday disclosed that the Abuja to Kaduna rail line now generates one million Naira daily due increase in passengers that patronise the rail.

He attributed the passenger surge to the security challenges faced by commuters along the route.

‘’We are spending N56m per month, we are getting back only N16m. Now there is an improvement; we now make N30m, (that is) N1m per day.

“The improvement started last month because of increase in passengers because of the kidnapping on the road,’’ he said.

The minister said that government was using the previously generated revenues on the maintenance of the coaches and other logistics.

Amaechi said that government would address the issue of touting at the Idu rail station with the expected arrival of 10 more coaches by October.

He, however, disclosed that the arrival of the new coaches would require more resources for maintenance in order to meet customers’ expectations.

The Abuja-Kaduna rail line commenced commercial operation in July 2016.
