I am here to answer this question today based on my experience in running both a Broliers birds and Layers project.

In less than 3 minutes, your question would be answered. It is a different view.

Nobody has told you this secret.

And without a doubt, I know you are a novice. And contemplating which type of poultry business to invest your money in.

You have come across hundreds of articles written by well-intentioned bloggers who are not farmers on this topic online today.

But you see, it is unwise to visit a police station and pay the DPO for medical advice.

When you are sick, you run to a hospital and insist to speak with a specialist in that area of pain.

As you know all medical doctors are not the same. Some specialized in treating the ears of others' brains, and some focus on pregnant women only.

Unfortunately, when it comes to investing money in agriculture, many people seek advice from bankers.

Others copy information from bloggers who are only good at content creation.

But I know you are wiser.

And because you are reading this article, your problem would be solved 100%.

Why?

Because this is my line of business.

With many years of practical experience managing a commercial Broilers and Layers farm, I can help you.

I have managed a farm of 5000 broilers and 6000 layers for over 7 years.

So, between Broilers and Layers production, which one is more lucrative?

From my experience, Layer production is more lucrative. Because I like the daily cash flow on my farm.

But unfortunately, this article is about you. I don't matter here. What is good for me might not be good for you.

Therefore, let me help you with tips to consider before coming to a conclusion about which area of poultry to focus on.

BROILERS PRODUCTION
Simply, broiler production means the rearing of birds for meat purposes.

All you do is buy DOC (Day Old Chick), rear it for 5-6 weeks, and sell it out to people who slaughter them, cook it, and sell it to final consumers.

This type of bird doesn't necessarily layer eggs. As you sell the matured birds, you buy DOC again and start nurturing them to the maturity stage.

And the circle continues.

It is a short-term project.

But there are many things to consider before you can invest in broiler production.

LAYERS PRODUCTION
This simply refers to the rearing of birds for egg production.

Layers can be slaughtered and eaten just as broilers, but the primary reason for stocking them is not the meat.

You rear them so they will be producing eggs for you. And it takes them 15-17 weeks to start producing eggs.

And they could lay for 12-14 months, all things being equal.

It is a long-term project.

Now, there is not much difference between Broilers and Layers production.

The major thing to consider is the individual embarking on the project and the purpose.

Comparison of differentiation here in terms of profitability is unnecessary.

They are silent but powerful tips to consider before deciding on which area of poultry to invest your money in.

And in this article, I will expose a few to you. With the knowledge you will glean here, a better decision would be made.

You wouldn't follow blind arguments written by bloggers who are not farmers but good content creators.

So, below are a few tips to consider before deciding which area of poultry business to invest your hard-earned money into.

Number One: Your Market.
Let me shock you.

I have received over 200 emails from this platform, from my readers who rushed and stocked plenty of broilers, and how cannot get GOOD buyers.

Do not make such a terrible mistake.

Before you settle on starting a broilers or layers farm, first ask and sincerely answer these few questions.

(A)Who would buy matured broilers or eggs?
(B) For how many weeks can they afford to pay the price of the broilers?
(C)Can I make a good profit margin? And at what stage?


This is the first phase to sit down and critically analyze with 100% accurate answers before investing one kobo in rearing birds.

Unfortunately, it is a phase many novices jump.

Many think because they have access to funds, they can start and maintain a profitable farm.

I might not be able to answer those questions in this article. But I would attend to write a separate detailed one.

Because there are serious issues that you must know about.

And if you subscribe to my newsletter, the complete article would be sent to your inbox once it is ready.

For now, let me summarize. Your market comprises consumers who can buy the broilers when they are ready for sale.

Do not assume you know them. Do not be like most people who speak out of ignorance or emotions like “everyone eats chicken meat, so they will buy”

I have bad news for you. Everyone eats chicken meat, but not everyone would buy it from your farm.

Therefore, be business minded here. Drop your emotions and know those specific individuals who will buy from you.

And at what week?

Because some consumers prefer matured broilers of weeks 6-8. While others mostly restaurants, prefer 4-5 weeks.

When you know this, it will determine how long you should keep your broilers and how much feed they would consume.

This will further help you to make proper financial decisions and conclude if you are good to run with it.

From my many years of consulting for smallholder farmers, the majority of them abort their agricultural journey due to lack of funds.

Please, know your financial power first.

Again, know your customer's purchasing power. Some people would want matured broilers of 8 weeks, but they cannot pay the cost.

It is possible after conducting a careful market research, you will know with 100% certainty that you cannot manage layers or broilers farm.

The market at your disposal cannot buy eggs. They prefer broilers and viz-visa.

And this information you have gathered should determine which area of poultry to invest it. Not really what you want to do.

Put your consumers first.

Another thing to consider is the Profit margin. This is the fundamental reason for even starting a business.

By now you should know that all profits are not the same. And it is wise to calculate your profit margin correctly before investing funds.

I do not want to assume that you know this already.

Therefore, I will take a little time out to explain to you what capital can do to the success of your business.

First, know that we have different types of capital.
(A)Money
(B)Knowledge
(C)Human resources

Secondly, consider the gestation period of this project. Don't start poultry business this week and be expecting N6million profit next month.

Hmmm... I think I am sharing too much wisdom with you here.

You have to pay a consultation fee for this level of information. Nevertheless, I love and appreciate you for being my reader.

Let us discuss Capital in general term.

Many people associate the word capital with MONEY alone. So, once you mention Capital, they quickly check their bank account balance to see the amount there.

But you can read from this article that money is only part of the capital every business person should have.

Let us assume you have done good market research and have come to a concrete conclusion that “Layers Production” is the project you want to embark on.

I will tell you congratulations.

But also cautious you to calm down and count the cost implications, second.

Can you feed 1000 layers for 17 weeks?
Do you know how to rear/manage layers?
Who are/is your staff?

If at this phase you cannot confidently provide an answer with 100% accuracy, stop!!!

You will fail and lose all your hard-earned money.

Stop. My friend, I love you too much to allow you to jump naked into the street of Lagos like that.

See, you may love rearing broilers against layers. But in business, making huge profits consistently is what you should love. Not the product.

Now, your source of funding and goal should decide for you what project to embark on.

If you are collecting a loan from a commercial bank for instance, with a 12-monthly repayment plan. Normal street wisdom should tell you that broilers are the right project.

I know you love layers.

Because you will be selling eggs and making money daily, but your bank cannot wait for 15 weeks for your layers to start producing eggs.

The loan term said you should start repayment/servicing your debt within 8 weeks. Therefore, broilers would save you.

But if it is long-term financing that you got. Layers production is the right type of business to invest in.

Can you see the brain work involved?

Knowledge
Do you have the required minimal knowledge of rearing birds? If your answer is YES, congratulations.

But if NO, then you should start by first buying the knowledge. Please, BUY the knowledge from the right source with speed.

Please, do not rush into starting a broiler farm because you read on Nairaland or a content creator blog that “You Can Make N6million Monthly Rearing Broilers”. It is a fallacy.

As a complete beginner, you do not have the required knowledge that can generate N6million monthly.

Do not allow headlines to cheat and destroy you.

Invest in knowledge first.

Go for training, buy ebooks from practicing farmers, watch videos from YouTube, and pay for consultancy.

From my experience, most people see buying ebooks about farming as a waste of funds.

They prefer to invest that N1million without knowledge, instead of using N50,000 to acquire cooked knowledge.

You, do not do that. With less than N3,000 you can get a good ebook on Broilers Production that can save you from future losses.

Without knowledge, you rush into rearing layers and a simple infection would kill them all. Then, your entire capital would be gone.

Let's assume it was borrowed funds. How can you explain the scenario to your creditors?

Buy Knowledge

It is available for sale. Therefore, you do not have excuses.

In conclusion, your knowledge capacity should determine which project to invest your money in. Broilers or Layers?

Human Resources
A silent but powerful type of capital.

It is interesting how many novice farmers think agricultural activities can be run by every human being.

And with these assumptions, we have numerous idle farms in Nigeria today.

Individuals and even government agencies invest hundreds of millions of Naira in setting up agricultural projects.

But end up employing the wrong hands to manage it. And the result is usually explosive failure.

I have made this mistake myself. Which means I am writing from a standpoint of an authority.

Do not think because your brother-in-law is jobless and should be your farm manager. Do just pick someone from the street to come in and take care of your birds.

Your brother might be jobless. This does not qualify him to manage your farm.

I am writing this for commercial-scale potential farmers. Especially those outside Nigeria who want to start farming at home. You need experts to turn this project into a profitable one.

Hiring good, ready, and, willing to work in farm employees is a topic that needs a thorough discussion. I need to settle down and teach on this particular issue.

Because many agricultural projects failed in our country today due to inadequate quality individuals to manage them.

So, considering who will manage your farm should be one of the principal requirements to consider before deciding to rear Layers or Broilers.

The employees you would hire will determine the profitability of your farm, not the birds or building you have installed.

Now, can you understand what capital is?

Money, Knowledge, and Human Resources. Get this phase right or don't invest your hard-earned money in any agricultural project.

Number Three: Location/Season
Yes. Location is a powerful tip to consider before deciding whether Layer production is more profitable than Broilers.

Your location plays a silent but vital role. I call it silent because many people shout location, location, and location but do not take it seriously.

Unfortunately, I cannot tell you what type of poultry business is more lucrative in your community. But you can easily know by conducting physical market research.

I wrote an article many years ago about “How To Conduct A Good Agricultural Market Survey”. The article is old and needs a review, once I do that, I will share it here with you.

In summary, you cannot do an agricultural market survey on the internet alone. The information you get here wouldn't help you completely.

You MUST go out. And study your environment to know which of business you can do.

For example, Muslims do not eat pork. Therefore, rearing pigs in a location dominated by Muslims and seeing them as your target market is unwise.

And they might fight you. Your pigs might be attacked and it will become a wasted investment.

When it comes to rearing birds, the location of your farm is very important. A wrong choice of a site would lead to a failed business not because is not profitable.

I want you to know that livestock in general does not like a noisy environment. And the odor from chicken droppings is offensive.

This should already tell you where your farm should be located.

Building the farm outside means you need to take security seriously. If the security conditions in your locality are bad and you proceed to build a farm there, the result is predictable.

You do not need a prophet of God to tell you that it is a wasted effort. You wouldn't make money there.

Season
Always consider the season and weather of your locality.

Layers have a specific weather that would enable them to produce good eggs and be consistent. Too much heat/cold would affect their production.

Broilers need specific weather to stay alive a grow fast. Too much cold would kill your birds.

And you have to know how to control both weather conditions. This comes with a cost. When you know it, you can know if you can invest or not.

The season here also includes the year. For example, when is Christmas or New Year season, there is more demand for broilers.

During this period, broiler rearing is the best business to invest your money in. The demand is usually above supply.

And clients are ready to pay any amount to get the chicken for their celebration.

If you are a smallholder farmer, you can focus on rearing broilers on a seasonal basis.

And you will make a lot of money and most importantly acquire the knowledge required to go big and run all seasons.

In conclusion from where we started.

You can accept with me now that choosing between Broilers and Layers requires more than mere talk.

Egg production might be more profitable for me, because I have the required Market, Capital, and, my Location is 100% right.

Therefore, it is unprofessional to announce to the world that “Layers Production Is More Profitable Than Broilers”.

Such information is erroneous and anyone who makes investment decisions based on that might end up in shame and tears after following me.

You must sit down and calculate carefully to see that all the basic requirements are rightly in place for you too.

This would help you to understand that my consultation was right. I have stopped a lot of people from venturing into agribusiness.

Because after careful analysis using 100% raw information, they will accept that they cannot invest in it.

You primarily venture into any business for profit maximization.

My dear friend, both are highly profitable. But make no mistake, not all would be profitable for you.

True talk i have once reared doc to 2.5 maturity with feeds ,clean water, occasional tetracycline & vitc only, clean litter change every 2days with just 2 mortalities something must kill a chicken though.
I have also reared 51birds on organic herbs extract in the water with fermented feeds with one mortality.

Is good experience.

My brother, this is my 9th years of poultry rearing with herbal mixtures.
Although, I only rear 51 birds at a time and I want to move on rearing like 500 birds upwards.

Nothing but gospel truth. What I notice from my short experience in poultry is that you'll be okay by providing good feeds, clean water, proper lightning, ventilation,frequent sanitary, and source of heat.

That's the most important things.

Na just food and clean water i dey load dem.. Dem no go sick sef, regular poultry house cleaning helps a lot.

Knowledge is power. I was reading my Bible this morning and came across a verse in Proverbs that I want you frame it and keep in your house.

Hang it where you can see it daily. Here is the wise saying by King Solomon. “Always remember what you learnt. Your education is life, guard it well”.

What you are going to learn here is life. Every intending “Poultry Farmer” should remember and guard it well.

Pay close attention now.

Alot of vet doctors do not want you to know this secret. And few successful and profitable poultry farmers are ashamed to tell you. But today, I want you to know everything.

It will save you a lot of money. And you will be a profitable poultry farmer once you apply the knowledge you have got here.

Here is the secret knowledge; “Your broilers/layers birds do not need drugs everyday to give you result”.

The statement above is unpopular. I know you have never heard of such proposal. You have read different articles and spoke to numerous poultry farmers and what they normally complain about is how expensive birds drugs cost.

And it makes you scared of starting due to low budget.

For the experienced poultry farmers. Majority do not know the fact that their birds can grow and produce result without drugs.

For vet doctors, they know for sure that your birds don't need daily drugs to grow. But they have intentionally hidden it from you. Because they need your money to survive.

No insult to them�

They are in the business of selling Poultry drugs. And your constant patronize is what will keep them in business.

Therefore, blame yourself for not getting the required knowledge. Leave your Vet doctor and that poultry farmer alone.

I am here to help you.

Now, you will agree with me that birds are living things. Just like human beings. The difference is, their body system differs from yours.

Birds have respiratory system
Birds have reproductive system
Birds have digestive system.
And many more.

As a human being, you'll agree with me that you don't take drugs daily. You only visit your doctor, get prescriptions (after proper check-up), buy drugs as told. And take it as instructed.

And you only visit the hospital when you are sick. Your doctor might ask you to take the drugs only 7 days or 14 days and come back for check up.

Follow me closely. I am insisting that you understand what you need to be a successful poultry farmer.

Now, if you wake up in the morning. Decide to buy paracetamol and tramadol and consume 6 tablets morning, afternoon, and evening. You'll get sick within 30 days maximum.

You wouldn't only get sick. You might have spend thousands of your heard earn money buying and taking drugs that are not necessarily for your body system.

Remember, you were not sick initially. You decided to be taking drugs daily for pleasure. Or taking it so you wouldn't fall sick. But now, you are sick and plenty of money wasted.

And more money is needed to bring your health back to normal.

Now, use this example to match up with your birds. Why give them drugs daily when they are not sick?

Why?

Note that chicken drugs are expensive in Nigeria and Africa at large.

Let me tell you how some vet doctors bank on your ignorance to make money.

You venture into rearing birds newly and want to push your birds to grow faster than normal. You want to make quick sales (Quick sales doesn't equal PROFIT) within 5-6 weeks from broilers.

Since you want abnormal growth of your birds. Your vet doctor would sell a drug that could help you achieve that goal. They are zillions of boosters drugs available for impatient farmers.

So, one or two drugs would be recommend to you. They are usually not cheap. You will buy plenty sachets or bottles and be advise to be dropping in their water or mix with feed. To fasten their growth.

Let me inform you that birds consume plenty of water in a day. So, they would consume plenty of that boosters. Which directly means you are spending plenty of money daily on drugs for birds that are healthy.

At the end of 5-6 weeks, you big birds are ready for sales. But also remember that your cost of production too is big. So, you will struggle to sell your broilers at a reasonable price so you can make profit.

Note: Excessive use of boosters to increase birds growth causes incurable disease to human beings who consume the meat. And you are not coming into business to sell poison to your fellow human.

And that is where you will understand that poultry business is not as profitable as some bloggers makes it look. You need a lot of quality knowledge to be a profitable poultry farmer.

Do you remember your vet doctor? He has cash out without stress. And before I forget, excessive drugs can cause stunted grow in poultry. We will discuss about stunted growth later.

What Do You Need To Do?

Your birds can give you maximum growth in a short period of time. Without spending too much on drugs. You only visit a Vet Doctor when you birds are sick.

All you need is, quality feed. And clean water always available in the pen for your birds.

As simple as that. Buy good feed from reputable company with track record and testimony from field farmers. And give your birds at the right proportion and at the right time.

Note: Do not buy feed because their company agent told you the field is good. A poultry farmer should show you which feed to use.

Keep their pen clean 24/7. And most importantly, clean water should be available 24 hours for your birds.

Because if they eat quality feed and drink dirty water, it will lead to massive death. And lost of your invested capital. If they have enough of clean water to drink, it will ease digestion and that encourage growth.

So, the formula for maximum growth of your birds is Quality Feed+Clean Water = Net Profit.

I know it sounds simple and you might be wondering why nobody told you this or wrote about it before. The answer is simply because, I am writing from my over 6 years in the poultry industry.

And I want you to know the truth. Do not waste money on drugs. Buy drugs only when your birds are sick.

When they are not, provide them with clean water and good feed.

Your vet doctor wouldn't tell you this fact about rearing animals.

Good luck to you my friend. Go and start your chicken farm and become a profitable farmer. Do the right thing.

Be patient with your birds. [b]Quick growth doesn't necessarily translate to Quick profit in business.

It is a long post but short for those that intend to venture into poultry farming.

Yesterday, I took statistics of 7 "former" poultry farmers around my locality and discover something terrible amongst them.

They all started with over 200 birds, lost almost half in their 2-3 weeks, sold the remaining at a lost and promise never to reinvest in poultry business again.

Sad story.

Because they couldn't recover their capital after wasting much time on a business venture that was said to be lucrative.

See where they got it wrong,

They read/hear someone said poultry farming is lucrative but failed to study the unwritten codes of poultry business.

What are the unwritten codes?

These are top secrets in the business not written in books or blogs but only shared to novice when demand is made for such.

Some poultry farmers here will understand me better.

Back to the crux: These 7 farmers all started rearing birds without proper consultation from practical poultry farmers.

They made so many harmful mistakes which warrant the death of their capital. I wish to highlight a few of them here.

(1) Pen Construction: When it comes to animals rearing, pen(house) construction is the most essential thing.

If the pen is constructed wrongly your birds cannot survive even if you administer the most powerful drugs to them.

The height of your pen depend on the weather condition of your farm settlement.


Your pen height MUST not be taller than 5 blocks base on weather climate of your community.

And birds cannot survive in such weather conditions. Our pen height cannot and mustn't be same with those poultry pens in Jos, Cross River, Kano and co.

So, all the farms I visited made that error. Their pen was taller than mountain Everest which resulted to massive death of their innocent birds.

Warning: Before you construct your pen, know your weather conditions.

(2) Customers: Sorry, Customer suppose to be our number one on the list. But never mind, read and be safe.

In all businesses, we all know customers are the only source of finance/capital. If you were given a startup loan, customers are the ones to payback that money.

Therefore, know your consumers first.

Many people make this stupid mistake when it come to rearing birds. They feed their birds 24/7 hours because someone somewhere said birds eat a lot of food.

Be wise today.

When it come to feeding your birds, know your market and when to sell.

Example: If your market demand birds base on weight and not height, feeding them 24/7 hours is not a crime.

Because their weight when measure on scale, determine how much they'll pay you.

But majority of birds consumers I know buy height and pay little attention to weight. Therefore, if you're in a such environment your feeding pattern must differ.

Consider the timing too. Nurturing your birds for 6 months shouldn't be the goal only if you have large number of buyers who can afford the price.

Note: These farmers made this mistake too. They feed their birds to a price above their consumers budget and it resulted to a lost.

(3): Hatchery: We have numerous hatcheries in Nigeria and some aren't strong, they're at an infant stage trying to develop their services.

Jump and pass them.��

I am not here to promote any farm but we have good hatcheries that give us quality birds with longer life span.

Example: The hot weather conditions in Benue State have forced two farms on us.

Their birds are stronger and survive pretty well in Benue, therefore majority of poultry farmers here go after their birds not minding how high their price per DOC(Day Old Chick) cost.

Note: Error again. They bought birds from an unknown hatchery and their birds couldn't survive Benue State hot weather.

The unwritten codes are numerous and when consciously or unconsciously derelict your rightful duty of asking questions, you MUST harvest the results.

Nature is free and fair, it punishes natural law offenders without trail in court.

Nature have zero respect for novice or experts, do it wrongly and you reap bitter fruits. Be trained, poultry business isn't a gambling table.

Not just farming... If you want to be a good seller, be trained.

If you desire to become a guru in software programming, be trained.

If you want to be successful in your network marketing profession, be trained.

Don't assume you know, know it.
