WHAT IS THE BEST CLIMATIC CONDITION FOR PLANTAIN FARMING Bananas grow best in areas with an optimal mean monthly temperature of 27 degree. Plantain have a high water demand WHAT TYPE OF SOIL IS SUITABLE FOR BANANA/PLANTAIN FARMING Bananas require a deep, well-drained loam soil with high humus content. A pH range of 5.6 - 7.5 is optimum. Bananas require considerable mounts of Nitrogen, and Potassium to maintain high yields. These can be supplied by planting on fertile soils or applying fertilisers HOW SHOULD PLANTAIN/BANANA FILED BE PREPARED manual clearing is usually preferable if mechanical deforestation is to be used care must be taken not to remove top soil with important organic matter. Burning is not usually recommended because useful organic matter can be destroyed. Land should be ploughed to provide a good seedbed for the banana plantation WHAT IS THE SPACING AND HOLE SIZE FOR BANANA/PLANTAIN The recommended spacing is 3m between and 3m within the row (3m x 3m). Rows should be straight in flat fields to allow plants to receive maximum amount of sunlight. On sloping land rows should follow the contour lines in order to decrease soil erosion, dig holes that are 30cm deep and 30cm wide. WHAT TYPES OF PLANTING MATERIALS SHOULD BE SOURCED The planting material should be obtained from healthy plantations (free of soil borne diseases and pests). Micropropagated plants (tissue culture plants) or suckers can be obtained from a reliable source, you can source your planting materials from us agrotrust we have Disease free improved varieties of Plantain/Banana suckers and plantlet WHEN SHOULD BANANA/PLANTAIN BE PLANTED Plantains can be planted throughout the rainy season, as banana suckers need 4-6months of growth without water stress. Planting in the middle of the rainy season has an advatage as plantains will then be produced off-season and get high prices. |
Gadgetmobil:thank you sir |
Oluaso:cost of labour varies from location, u can sources for cheap labour, it always good you have your farm close to your target processing factory. |

nurey:Sir, u are very correct, but for intercroping cassava with maize it not always advisable cos of the yield of cassava, maize will affect the yield of cassava, maize has a fibrous root |
RealityShot:Boss Cassava and plantain on the same farm really |
if the the total is 112000-442000 = 330000 for one hectare |
RealityShot:you welcome sir |
laosam09:do you have plantain farm?, plantain is very lucrative and profitable your expected income will be determined by the yield of the plantain and availability of market, you can sale per kilo or per bunch it depend on your target audience a kilo sales for around #100. if you are cultivating plantain you are advice to plant hybrid plantain that has high yield so that your harvest will be bulky. |
more profit can be made from cassava if you can process your cassava yourself into finished product such as gari, flower, starch, chips if u have the capital to acquire cassava processing equipment |
enomakos:after minusing your expenditure you should have a profit of about N128,000 if you cultivate large you can sale to factories there u can make more profit |
enomakos:in one hectare u have 2.5 acre and one hectare requires 60 bundle 60/2.5=24 bundles |

codedruns2:Profit calculation based on one hectare calculation (1ha) A virgin land produces about 25 to 28 tonns/ ha @ 15,000 to 17,000 Let’s say about 26 tonnes x 17,000 = 442,000 expected sale expected sales - expenditure = profit |
Dear all, the cost of cultivation of cassava varies from location please find out about the actual price in your location. this is just a guideline as the farming season draws close LAND PREPARATION FOR CASSAVA Ploughing: this is the primary tillage to loosen or turn the soil. PLOUGHING (single operation)/ acre = N4500 2.5 acres = 1hectre : N 4500 *2.5= N11, 250/hectare HARROWING: is an implement for breaking up and smoothing out the surface of the soil. This operation is very important as far as cassava cultivation is involved. The more the soil is loosened, the better the chances of having large cassava roots. HARROWING (single operation)/ acre = N4500 2.5 acres = 1hectre : N 4500 *2.5= N11, 250/hectare PLANTING MATERIALS 1 hectare requires 60 bundles of cassava stems 1 bundle of cassava stem cost N 350 Therefore, 1 ha/60 bundles will be N 350* 60= N21, 000/ha FIELD OPERATIONS Planting: cost of this operation /ha = N10000 Spraying of herbicides: 1 ha requires 4litres of chemical X @ 1500 each (N6000/ha) 4litres of chemical Y @ 2500 each (N10000/ha) N16000 Per Ha Weeding First weeding occurs 6-8 weeks after planting and the price is area dependent 1 ha cost N20, 000 Second weeding Occurs at Months after planting. Depending on the nature of the farm; if weeding is still necessary, it will be done but if a canopy producing variety is cultivated, chemical spray will be preferable. In-case of chemical weeding, 1 ha = N6000 Labor = N5000/ha Third weeding If it would be necessary, it surely will be chemical weeding. In-case of chemical weeding, 1 ha = #6000 Labor =# 5000/ha |
