Health / Did you know every year approximately 1.3 billion tons of food goes to waste??? by aiesecakure: 11:21am On Nov 01, 2018
How will you contribute to responsible consumption?

Did you know every year approximately 1.3 billion tons of food goes to waste? (source: un.org). Even most of the resources that go into producing this food goes to waste……..

In collaboration with our partners Worldchefs, Electrolux Food Foundation and Project Everyone we call for action and we want to change this! That is why together, we have created a universal workshop kit for SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production named: Food Heroes.

The Food Heroes toolkit has as an objective to help educate kids from 9 to 14 on how to minimize food waste and become advocates for sustainable food consumption.

It has outlined the learning outcomes:

- Understand that their actions can affect The Global Goals: specifically with food waste
- Use creative literacy to engage action on reducing food waste
- Create a plan to reduce food waste in their own lives
Also the kit helps you to prepare for the lesson, has a number of activities to do, video materials, a self assessment and a template of certificate!. It will make your job much easier.

You can access the Lesson plan to be part of the World’s Largest Lesson for SDG 12: Food Heroes here>>> (http://worldslargestlesson.globalgoals.org/healthy-not-hungry-food-projects-for-the-goals/)

Do you want to become a volunteer abroad and join one of our arranged projects to contribute to Responsible Consumption? You can find more information about our volunteer projects this winter and how AIESEC is taking for Responsible Consumption.

Business To Business / How Technology Is Changing The Workplace. by aiesecakure: 6:59am On Aug 21, 2018
A hundred years ago the workplace looked very different than it does today. This is largely due to technology and innovation that have fundamentally changed the way we work. But what exactly are the ramifications of new technology in the workplace today? What aspects of the workplace has technology changed the most?

PRODUCTIVITY BOOST
Since the industrial revolution, productivity has skyrocketed thanks to innovations in technology as well as management. Today, raising employee productivity is still a hot topic.

The concept of “work smarter not harder” has become a part of work life with technology stepping up to streamline, declutter and optimize each step of the daily grind. An example of this is the project management platform Trello, which allows you to see and manage entire projects at once, set and assign tasks as well as collaborate with teams. Apps like these allow employees to concentrate on what’s really important and improve productivity.

HIRING IN THE 21ST CENTURY
The recruitment process has also fundamentally changed as the workforce specializes and young people become more educated. Not only are young people specializing more, but they are also children of the world wide web. This means that they are adept at using the internet and new technology and innovation that comes with it.

The most visible way that technology has affected the recruitment process is in attracting talent. Social media has made a big difference in how potential employees interact with organizations and find new jobs. For example, LinkedIn is a social media platform that is geared towards networking and finding professional opportunities.

So how can you attract these tech-savvy young people? Organizations run by young people have also stepped up to bridge the gap between companies and young leaders in order to improve youth employability.

COLLABORATION IS KEY
The workplace in the 21st century is a lot more collaborative than before. Not only do high growth organizations today foster collaboration within the organization but they also invest in collaboration across organizational lines.

The rise of collaboration platforms like Slack, designed originally to cut the use of work email, have made collaboration easier than ever. This comes with an added benefit: studies show that companies that use Slack to collaborate have a 32% higher productivity rate.

In the 21st century, we have seen the rise of multi-sector partnerships. From corporations partnering with NGOs to tackle world issues to the private and public sectors working together to find technological solutions to better daily life, multi-sector partnerships are on the rise.

In conclusion, it is crucial to realize that technology on its own does not change anything; it is how the technology is used that makes the difference. If you want to use technology effectively, you should use it consciously to achieve a certain goal.

Health / Re: The World’s Scientists Just Issued An Official “warning To Humanity” by aiesecakure: 7:50am On Nov 17, 2017
aiesecakure:
IN BRIEF

More than 15,000 scientists from 184 countries have signed an article titled "World Scientists' Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice." In it, they detail pressing environmental concerns and offer suggestions for a better path forward.

Second Notice

The profound, negative effect of human activity on our environment is widely discussed, yet many continue to deny that we have a problem. In an attempt to remedy that, more than 15,000 scientists from 184 countries signed “World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice,” an article published in the November 13 issue of BioScience.

The scientists’ warning outlines the specific dangers of the path we’re currently taking and offers suggestions for setting a new course. The idea is to energize the public to put pressure on governments around the world to address the issue.

his effort follows in the footsteps of “World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity,” an article published by the Union of Concerned Scientists in 1992. A total of 1,700 experts signed off on that document, which should demonstrate just how much more worrisome the situation has gotten over the last quarter-century.

“[A Second Notice] is a way to revisit the warning that was put out 25 years ago and kind of take stock — What has happened since? Has there been progress? — to revisit the questions that warning put out there,” paper co-author Eileen Crist of Virginia Tech told Futurism.

Point of No Return?

According to the latest “Warning to Humanity” article, the situation is undeniably bleak, with the authors providing a host of damning statistics that illustrate just how much damage has already been done over the past 25 years.

The amount of fresh water available per capita has dropped by 26 percent. Almost 300 million acres of forestland have been destroyed. The global population of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and fish has dropped by 29 percent, while the human population has increased by 35 percent.

“The consensus is that we have not done enough,” said Crist. She notes the Montreal Protocol and its effect on ozone depletion as an exception, but acknowledges that most issues have grown worse.

“Deforestation continues, and we’re in the throes of a mass extinction event. Scientists warn that, in this century, if we continue to go as we’ve been going, we’re likely to lose 50 to 75 percent of the Earth’s species,” said Crist. “The importance of that cannot be overstated. This is not something that can be fixed. It’s not something that has a solution later on. It’s just permanent.”

The “Warning to Humanity” article isn’t just a recap of the current situation, though. It also notes measures that could potentially reverse some of the damage that’s already been done or at least mitigate the impact moving forward.

These actions include the establishment of more protected wild spaces on land and at sea, better anti-poaching regulations and restrictions of wildlife trading, improvements to programs that offer family planning and education to women, a widespread shift toward plant-based diets, and a far-reaching transition to renewable and otherwise green sources of energy.

Closing the Gap

To Crist, there’s clearly a disconnect between the way experts look at the impact human activity is having on our environment and the way the general public sees the situation.

“There is a really big gap between what the scientific community knows, and is aware of, and is writing about, and what is generally out there in the public,” she said, acknowledging that “the public” is an amorphous group, and it’s not entirely accurate to make a sweeping generalization.

Ideally, the report will help narrow that gap by providing the average person with access to a large quantity of scientifically accurate information, getting members of the public rethinking their stance on environmental issues. “We are hoping that our paper will ignite a wide-spread public debate about the global environment and climate,” co-author William Ripple said in a press release.

However, he also acknowledges the potential for a different reading. “Some people might be tempted to dismiss this evidence and think we are just being alarmist,” said Ripple. “Scientists are in the business of analyzing data and looking at the long-term consequences. Those who signed this second warning aren’t just raising a false alarm. They are acknowledging the obvious signs that we are heading down an unsustainable path.”

Health / Sickness Or Good Health! Support & Promote SDG Goal 3 In Ile-ife. by aiesecakure: 7:40am On Aug 24, 2017
Most giving is 80% emotion and 20% rational. The best way to appeal to someone’s emotions is to tell a story.

Here goes my story, when I was a young girl, I wanted to change the world. I realized it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation.

When I realized I couldn't change the nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn't change my town, I tried to change my family. Now I realize the only thing I can change is myself, and suddenly I realize that if long ago I had changed myself, I could have made an impact on my family.

My family and I could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation and I could indeed have changed the world.

Maya Angelou said "People will forget what you said. They will forget what you did. But they will never forget how you made them feel".

All I want to point out is that in developing my society I have taken measures that will enable build my community. AIESEC has helped me achieved this; through the project WE CARE. This project is inline with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #3.

So what is AIESEC?

Food / A Team Of Scientists Just Made Food From Electricity. by aiesecakure: 2:59pm On Jul 31, 2017
In Brief;
A Finnish research team has taken a step towards the future of food by developing a method for producing food from electricity. If scaling it up proves to be successful, it could be a tool in the fight against world hunger and climate change.

The Electric Bioreactor Farm

Finnish researchers have created a batch of single-cell protein that is nutritious enough to serve for dinner using a system powered by renewable energy. The entire process requires only electricity, water, carbon dioxide, and microbes. The synthetic food was created as part of the Food From Electricity project, which is a collaboration between Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

After exposing the raw materials to electrolysis in a bioreactor, the process forms a powder that consists of more than 50 percent protein and 25 percent carbohydrates — the texture can also be changed by altering the microbes used in the production.

The next stage, according to Juha-Pekka Pitkänen, principal scientist at VTT, is to optimize the system because, currently, a bioreactor the size of a coffee cup takes around two weeks to produce one gram of the protein. Pitkänen said in a LUT press release, “We are currently focusing on developing the technology: reactor concepts, technology, improving efficiency, and controlling the process.”

He predicted that it would take about a decade before a more efficient incarnation of the system would be widely available — “Maybe 10 years is a realistic timeframe for reaching commercial capacity, in terms of the necessary legislation and process technology.”

A World Without Hunger

The potential impact of food produced using electricity and other widely available raw materials is enormous. Currently, there are two main ways that it could be used.

First, as a means of feeding starving people and providing a source of food in areas that are not suited to agricultural production. Pitkänen said that, in the future, “the technology can be transported to, for instance, deserts and other areas facing famine,” providing a source of cheap and nutritious food to those who need it most.

The machine also works independently of environmental factors, meaning that it could feed people consistently — Jero Ahola, a Professor at LUT, said in the press release that it “does not require a location with the conditions for agriculture, such as the right temperature, humidity or a certain soil type.”

Second, as a means of decreasing global emissions by reducing the demand for food livestock and the crops necessary to feed them. Currently, the meat industry accounts for between 14 and 18 percent of global emissions of greenhouse gases, as well as taking up swarths of land that could be applied for other ends.

The food from electricity project could decrease the amount of unsustainable farming needed to fill our bellies as it provides us with a smaller, cheaper, and renewable method of getting our nutrients. Other solutions to this problem include lab-grown meat or turning to insect farming, which produces less waste and requires less energy.

ROLE OF NIGERIA YOUTH

The Future we want outcome Document of Rio +20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development referred to young people as “custodians of the future”– highlighting youth as important stakeholders with critical roles to play in helping achieve the goal of creating sustainable future for themselves and future generations. Over the past decade, there has been a growing recognition of the youth's participation in economic, social and political processes. Governments, international agencies, civil society and private sector organizations have realized that young people are powerful agents of change who, if supported and empowered, can help drive the achievement of the SDGs.

Young people are crucial civil society actors, and Nigeria has a vibrant youth population of over 70 million people. The current generation of young people will mature in the next 15-year period covered by the SDGs. They are the ones who will experience the impact of the success or failure of the SDGs. We must ensure that young people benefit from and contribute to ensuring inclusive development by supporting them to achieve the global goals.

There are more young people between ages 10 and 24 today than at any other time in human history, the percentage of young people under the age 24 can exceed 40% of the population of Nigeria – presenting an enormous opportunity for investing in development through youth.

“Ours is the first generation with the potential to end poverty and last to act to avoid worst effects of climate change” -Ban Ki Moon (United Nations Secretary-General)

WHY Nigeria Youth4GlobalGoals Initiative?

About Youth4GlobalGoals
AIESEC over the years has been directly contributing to a better Nigeria by providing solution driven talents through access to our local and international talents, developing young leaders who are self-aware, solution oriented, global citizen and empowering others towards an enabling development of the society. The purpose of Youth for Global Goals is to activate the leadership potential of young people around the world by engaging and mobilizing them through purposeful and cross-cultural projects around the globe. Projects are designed to support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. The core of Youth for Global Goals is to empower youth to take action toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Why Youth4Global Goals Matters for Nigeria?

It is commonly said in Nigeria that "the youths are the leaders of tomorrow". By2030, Nigeria is estimated to be one of the few countries in the world that will likely have a bountiful supply of young workers. Out of a current projected population of over 169 million Nigerians, young people account for over 43 percent of the population. What this means is that there are currently over 72 million young people in the country (*according to Nigeria Bureau of Statistics). Thus, youth, more than oil, could be Nigeria’s asset in the following decades, depending on how this demographic reality is managed.

Through the insights we gather, we will be able to understand what young in Nigeria care about and therefore:
1. Collaborate with the government and companies to achieve the sustainable development goals
2. Bring awareness and action to the issues around the Sustainable Development Goals, so more young people can speak up and influence change in their communities.

Education / Have You Heard About AIESEC And The Many Opportunities They Offer??? by aiesecakure: 12:36am On Mar 23, 2017
Hello Nairalanders, this is our very first post and we are here to bring to your knowledge a Non-Governmental Youth Organization called AIESEC.
You are probably curious about what is AIESEC? Who is AIESEC? Why AIESEC?

AIESEC which was founded in 1948, is a global youth-led organization striving to achieve peace and fulfillment of humankind’s potential by activating leadership qualities in youth through learning from practical experiences in challenging environments.
Together with partner organizations such as ING, NOKIA, NIKE, EDUCATION FIRST, ADB, PWC, JCI, FOREST INTERACTIVE, HNA TOURISM, KINECTIC, MIND VALLEY, TATA, UNHABITAT, UNIPLACES, ELECTROLUX, Co-Creation HUB, UBC, UNWOMEN, COMMONWEALTH etc., AIESEC facilitates a network of cross-cultural exchanges in the form of volunteering experiences and professional internships. I could go on and tell you the whole genesis down to the revelation of AIESEC but trust me, some of you will find it interesting but being a Nairalanders myself I know a better percentage of us don’t like long eye-straining posts so I’ll just relate this to our everyday lives as youths/students.

We all started out our education career in the university by writing O-level exams, jamb & post utme (we the godfathers) lately there’s no more p-utme n O-level rating got complicated. Anyway, we made it into 100L but it didn’t get any easier as we were faced with the long sun-scorching registration processes mixed with 7/8am – 6/7pm lectures including Saturday & probably Sundays then test and exams seems closer than ever. Now, what am I trying to draw out from here? Let’s assume the above illustration was refers to someone called Richard and right about now, Richard is a 500L student. Can you tell me what Richard has been doing for the past 4years I’ll tell you. Richard for the past 4years has been waking up every day, brushing, bathing, having breakfast, going to classes, doing assignments, sleeping, wake up the next day and repeat the same process but do note that sometimes Richard might not bath nor have breakfast probably cos of an early morning lecture then maybe he chills and cheers to the freaking weekend, who knows! Test and exams comes and goes then he’s gone for the breaks waiting for the next session to play out the same old process.

Truth be told this is the life of many of our undergraduates excluding those who’ve involved themselves in other life developing activities like entrepreneurship and skill acquisition. This goes on for 5 good years and then Richard comes out with a printed sheet of his 5-year worth called a degree. It could be a 1st class, 2nd class, or probably a 3rd class – again let’s assume Richard had a 1st class.
After school year, what comes to mind is to get a job but this is the tricking part. While job hunting, most employers told Richard to go look for 2-3years of experience. Does this mean than 5 good years, 1st class degree coupled with an I.T experience isn’t enough experience But then we all know that in our Nigeria of today just about anybody can get a 1st class. So, where can Richard get this 2-3years of experience, he just left school like yesterday plus adding that 3years to his 5years, it makes it 8years of learning just to be employable.
Now, your story doesn’t have to be like Richard’s. At AIESEC, we offer youths the opportunity to gain skills and experience while in school but do note that AIESEC opportunities is open to all youths not just students.

HOW WE DO IT
AIESEC members live an integrated development experience and this involves leadership opportunities, international internships and interacting with the global network to support their development
We develop youths through our 3 Global Programs: Global Volunteer, Global Entrepreneur, Global Talent
(Each Programs Will Be Discussed Out Rightly in Our Next Post. Also, subsequently we will be posting our upcoming global opportunities to which you can freely apply)
