Health / Incredible Crime Against Sickle Cell Patients Has To Stop. by AishaEdward(f): 3:31am On Oct 12, 2019
INCREDIBLE CRIME AGAINST SCD PEOPLE HAS TO STOP..........Aisha Edward

"LET'S RISE UP AND SAVE A SOUL NOW"

By the end of this piece, I’m hoping somebody will pinch me and tell me it was all just a dream. I am devastated. I am shocked at how we have condescended and degrades to a level where we treat our fellow humans like outcasts. It’s much worse when it’s a parent or parents who treat their ward(s) with disdain simply because they are anaemic. Which in actuality is not their making. Where do I begin? How do I relay this. My heart and pen bleeds. Before I begin however, there is a need to alert the appropriate authorities. Intervention is needed. The Wives of the governors, the Commissioners for Health, the Nigeria Medical Association, Nursing Council the General public, well meaning Nigerians. Etc.

I was at a reunion. A visit to my Alma mater. Old girls and colleagues from HRC Enugu. I was having a good time, feeling blessed to have witnessed the New Ultramodern Sickbay that had just been built for the school in honour of the Sick and weak which SCD falls within. My joy was however Short-lived when I got a distress call from my Edo State. A call that truncated my happiness, broke every bone in my body, and almost made me numb. A professor of Genetics from a very notable University in Nigeria, reported a very pitiful and dehumanizing situation of one of APLSCD member, a young Akwa Ibom girl named Uduak living and Schooling in Delta state, a final year Community and Public health Undergraduate who has been tortured and maltreated by her own parents simply because she is living with Sickle Cell disorder. The story gets worse. How would anyone digest the fact that the parents are in the medical field. The father been a doctor, and the mother a senior nurse. It is sad, it is shameful and very concerning.

How else can I stress the need for a home. If you can see this, we need your help. Yes! You, reading this post. The girl in question is deeply distraught and if drastic measures are not taken exigently she might become suicidal or even die from all the trauma. Is it her fault? The people who should even know better are the perpetrators of such evil and dastardly acts.
For this Professor of Genetics to go out of his way to report this Situation and drawing the attention of Delta State Government before bringing it formerly to Association of people living with Sickle Cell disorder as one of us in desperate need of help, please let us for just a moment picture the severity and delicate nature of the situation. According to the professor, The girl’s parents after effort to mediate on behalf of the girl have even admitted that they are tired and do not wish to accommodate their daughter Uduak any longer Claiming that she has bewitched them.

Mind you this isn’t just any 'girl'..this is their daughter.
What crime did she commit? where did she go wrong? A victim of circumstance you might call her. But we need to look at the more pressing issues here.

First, I cannot emphasize the importance of a home. A Sickle Cell Home. Let us be factual, that girl needs to leave the side of those parents of hers. To a place where she can be loved and properly cared for. Hence a sickle cell Home.
Secondly, there needs to be a re-orientation among medical practitioners. If the people who should be the light become the harbinger of darkness, then we have a huge problem. I mean who else should know and give knowledge about genetics other than the medical practitioners.

Who else?..it is indeed sad.

Thirdly, The NMA, Nursing Council, Police should please assist with the thorough investigation of this couple. Justice should always prevail.
My members have alleged countless times about their parents being the chief orchestrators of their deaths in recent times. As much as I never pay attention to them, I believe it’s high time I woke up to the harsh realities of life. The attached video below is a proof to this effect.

Once again, we call on the Wives of the Governors, The Commissioners for Health, well meaning Nigerians to assist people living with Sickle Cell disorder wherever or whenever they can.
