ANXIETY has gripped the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), as the top management staff of the hospital, on Thursday, moved to unravel the mystery surrounding a contractor with the hospital, who was arrested with 62 dead babies.

At press time, the officials were still holding meetings, which began on Tuesday, following the report about the arrest.

It could not be ascertained if the authorities had set up a panel or commenced full investigation into the matter, as the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Professor Akin Osibogun and other top management staff of the hospital were said to be devastated by the incident.

The fear of the mana-gement was said to be premised on the threat by the Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, to deal with the bad eggs in the hospital during his visit in May.

At the Morbid Anatomy Department, where the incident occurred, members of staff of the department were not willing to speak with the media, while the head of department was also not available.

However, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs Hope Nwalolo, said the management would get to the root of the matter, adding that any member of staff found culpable would be sanctioned.

On why the hospital keep so many dead babies in its mortuary, Nwalolo told the Nigerian Tribune that the dead babies were those that were not claimed by their parents.
