When I was much younger, my mom "forced" me to go to church with her. She had just become born again while I was away in boarding school and she was becoming a real fanatic.

On this day, after a lot of arguments I finally decided to go with her. The name of the church was grave envagelism mission(something like that) located at Cannal estate in Okota. It was Sunday school or something, very early and as soon we got into the church and caught the pastor in the middle of his preaching saying and I quote, "Some people believe that the church is a bank where you can withdraw money after depositing it. Don't believe that when you pay offering you can come back to the church to ask for help. The church is not a charity organisation". Needless to say, I collected the keys to the house from my mom and went back home to continue my previously interrupted sleep.

Another one is at Christ Embassy. There was a certain time that I used to live with one of their pastors. They have this annual partnership and they give out awards to their "partners". Basically, "partners" are people who donate money to the church for various reasons like their daily devotional aka rhapsody of realities, their tv show etc. First of all, you can't attend the event if you're not a partner and haven't donated a minimum of N50,000 to the cause. Needless to say, I watched the event via their media stream at one of the branches. What was shocking was that the person to receive the first award and being number 100 in the top donors list donated about N100million. Don't ask about number 1. Truly, the church is a very big business.

I've had other shocking experiences in church that make the whole religion thing look like a big hoax. Which I've come to discover it actually is.

During the Civil Rights era there were many differences between African Americans on how pursue rights for African Americans. They were militant groups like the Nation of Islam and other groups like the Black Panther Party. There were factions that wanted non violent protests like the SCLC and the NAACP.

After slavery was over there was disagreement over how to pursue the advancement of Black people. Those disagreements were between factions for Booker T. Washington and WEB Dubois. There were also disagreements between factions for WEB DuBois and Marcus Garvey.

I can list thousands of examples because I know for a fact, the music you guys call blues and Rock n roll in the West has been around in the Sahel and Southern Sahara for thousands of years.

The Blues, Jazz and Rock and Roll in America actually comes out of the gospel music in African American Churches. African Americans are a mix of the all of West African ethnic groups, as well as a few of the Central African Bantu ethnic groups in modern day Congo and Angola; so the music you hear out of the USA is a fusion of those different sounds from those different areas in Africa. That same fusions exist in Samba music out of Brazil and Calypso in the Caribbean. Another fusion appears to be Reggae music out of Jamaica, which some think is a fusion between Calypso music of the Caribbean and Rhythm and Blues and Jazz out of the USA.

We have already discussed the other stuff that you have mentioned through out this thread. Africans have achieved huge successes before. You are only feeling the way that you feel, because of how the Europeans screwed up your land and left you all for broke. Things will improve; they already are, but it took Africans over 300 years to commit the atrocities that they committed with the Europeans during the slave trade. So it is going to take some time and atonement for Africans to dig their way out of it. That is what all of the warring and fighting is all about. Things will sort themselves out and Africa will rise again. One of the things that has to happen is that African Americans have to invest in the African nations and the governments of those nations have to deal with honesty and improve the physical and business infrastructure so that investors will know that their investments are safe. Right now there is a lot of corruption and transparency is not there.

I was wondering though, do you know what part of Africa your fore fathers originated from before they were taken/sold off as slaves by/to Europeans?

My preliminary DNA tests show that my regions as being Cameroon/Congo (38%), Ghana/Ivory Coast (32%), Nigeria/Togo/Benin (10%), Senegal (3%) and Mali (3%). I have secondary DNA tests coming back in a few weeks and I am almost positive that my background will be Igbo 38%- Yoruba 10% on my Mother's side. I think that my father's side of family is going to be Asante/Baoule 32% and Mande/Jolloff or even Fulani for the rest. Those are my guess based upon things that I have been able to figure out about my family, but family lines that DNA tests come up with are usually different; so we will see.

Not True. African Americans were not that influenced by White people. How could they be, because White people and Black people were segregated in the Country for over 300 years. Blacks could not attend White schools; or go to their hospitals; or go to stores; or go their churches; or drink from their water fountains; or eat in their restaurants; or live in their neighborhood; or work on their good jobs. All that Black people could do in the USA was menial hard labor and fight in the White man's wars. The later White immigrants to the USA from Europe and Latin America eventually took all of the higher paying hard labor jobs after the White man unionized those jobs and gave better pay and benefits. No I am not agreeing to that. The Jackson 5 were a huge hit amongst Black people. The Jackson 5 were on a African American owned record label called MoTown. MoTown featured only African American acts like the Temptations and many very popular African American music groups. MoTown music was only played on Black owned radio stations and the music, the musicians and the radio stations became legendary. Whites listened to the music just like African Americans. The African American musicians were already legends before White people even tuned in to hear them sing.

I think that the problem with you is that you believe the propaganda of White people. White people lie about everything. Who you are. Where you are from. What your ancestors did. Etc. If the White man told Black people that Africans were cannibals and had no history. You might believe it, but African Americans wouldn't believe it; because stuff has been passed down to us through the slaves, mostly in the way of customs if not actual culture. The customs that the slaves passed down were incredibly civilized as opposed to anything that the White man in America ever did. The descendants of the slaves thought hard work, self esteem, self respect, community and unity. How do you think that African Americans could have advanced so far so fast if the slaves were not cultured, civilized and unified. African Americans set up their own colleges and universities; businesses and professions with absolutely no help from White in this country. African Americans have elected a Black president even though Black people only make up 15% of the USA population. African Americans have elected Senators, Congressmen and Congress women, Mayors and Governors City Councils and State Legislators all over the Country. African Americans have become millionaires and billionaires in the USA; started business; entered the trades and entered and have had outstanding careers in all of the professions. Slavery only ended 150 years ago. Segregation only ended 47 years ago, yet African Americans have thrived; to the point that their actions have allowed other Africans (Nigerians) to come to the USA for school and work. So we don't believe anything the White man says about Black people, because we know him.

The White man said Black is ugly; African Americans said that Black is beautiful. Guess who won that point? Hell white people in the USA get tanned to try to look more Black. White women put collagen in their lips to try to look like Black women. White women in this Country get surgeries to have fuller looking behinds like Black women. White men in the USA try to emulate African American men characteristics to try to appear to be more hip and cool. That is how strong African Americans cultural impact is in America. You will not see African Americans bleaching their skin to try to become Whiter, because African Americans already know that they are the standard of beauty and culture in America, whether they are dark skinned like Michael Jordan or light skinned like Beyoncé. Black people in the USA know who we are and the White man knows too.

If a Black person in America does anything to their appearance to try to become more White looking; the African Americans in this County will not have to say anything. It will be the White Americans that will say how terrible that person looks. White people were the hardest critics of Michael Jackson when he changed his appearance. They were all saying that he was crazy and that he looked better before his surgeries.

Not true. The music was popularized in African American Churches. The Black churches were the infrastructure. That is why the music became popular, because African Americans used to go to church in overwhelming numbers all over the USA. Many African American musicians then branched out into juke joints and minstrel shows and began playing secularized versions of the gospel music that was played in African American Churches. African American artist were so good that White people started pouring into Black Churches and juke joints to hear the music even though segregation laws prevented the mixing of Black and White people. White musicians then started imitating Black musicians, which grew the music even more, but White music fans eventually tired of the imitators and started demanding to hear the Black musicians. White audiences and white musicians have been flocking to see Black musicians every since, which is why guys like Michael Jackson became so famous.

RAP music is probably not a USA music. It's roots may actually be in the Wesr Africa Groits and in Jamaica. Jamaican music artists may have brought it to New York City, which is where RAP music caught on in the USA.

Bro, you're smart. I've read through all your write ups and I must say, I'm impressed and I've learnt a few things.

But there is one thing I won't accept, "the reason why Africa is in poverty is because of whites". I live in Nigeria. I was born here. I went to school here. I don't have one single caucasian friend. I speak the language and as I type this, there has been a power cut for more than 3 weeks.

I believe it's our fault that we are where we are. Contrary to what you believe, I'm well informed about the roots of Africa and I do have sufficient knowledge of Africa's past glories, if I can put it that way. But at the end of the day, even majority of Africans aren't aware of our rich history. Our leaders will rather spend billions from the national budget on their salaries than on education. And, like the great Tai Solarin said, Ignorance is darkness.

At the moment, Africa is but a shadow of what we once were. There is a we-will-never-grow mentality here. Everyone is only concerned with filling up their pockets. We have reviewed our educational curriculum in, well, let's just say never. We have lots of natural resources but there is a lot of poverty due to mismanagement.

In my initial response to this post, I did say, "black Americans should come back to Africa". It really does sound unrealistic but with careful scrutiny, you have to admit that it is actually possible. But that's another story.

Yes, whites ARE thieves bro. Wherever they go, they steal knowledge, land and go back to develop their countries. But Africans steal from Africa and take it to Europe and America. When an average politician/civil servant/leader is will, they travel abroad for medical treatment and spend millions. But the average Nigerian, where I live, is deprived of clean water.

Maybe you need to come over here for a visit to really understand what I mean. Whites might have sown the seeds of poverty but blacks are watering it.

My point of view is not a popular one, but the longer that I live the more I realize that Africans everywhere need an atonement for the Transatlantic slave trade. What a lot of people may not think about is that there is a lot of bitterness between black people over the trade; not only of the black people that were captured but also the families and friends that remained on the continent after their loved ones were hauled away.

How can that not be any bitterness from the slaves that made it to the USA and other countries in the new World? They were sold into bondage; in some cases by their own countrymen. Of course those slaves passed down that bitterness and distrust to their descendants; who were advised not to trust black people. So African Americans for the longest time didn't even trust each other, but shared abuses by the slavers forced African Americans into the same boat and we tied our futures to each other and now you don't hear black people in America act with such venom towards each other like they used to; because we know we are all that we got and we are learning to stick together which is how you elect a black president in majority white country. When African Americans went that far to trust each other it became an easy next step to start learning about their roots in Africa.

On the other side of that fence are the Africans. The one thing I notice is the constant friction between the ethnic groups (tribes). I can't help but think that a lot of the animosity is tied to the slave trade. After all there were a lot of wars and a lot deaths and a lot of families torn apart by trade. No one ever seems to speak about the mothers and the fathers and the grandparents who had to live on in Africa with the knowledge that they would never see children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews or cousins again; because those kids were hauled off as slaves, by the Aro groups and their slaving partners the English and other entities. How do you think that those families remaining in Africa felt knowing that they would never hear or see their love ones again. Of course those families are going to have bitterness. Of course they are going to pass that bitterness down through the generations. Later generations may not even know the reason for the bitterness towards the Aro groups, but they just know never to help them or trust them. The Africans are still working their way through that stuff and it is only made more difficult by Europeans culture being forced on them; which pushes the notion that Europeans are beautiful and Africans are not; which is just ridiculous.

I think that Nigerian political leaders and Chiefs need to look and learn from the government of Ghana. The government of Ghana apologized to Africans in the diaspora and to the descendants of the families of ancestors of the people that were enslaved for the role that the Asante played in the slave trade. It was only symbolic, but it showed that the government acknowledged the evil of the slave trade and the damage that even befell the African enslavers. A lot of African Americans have a lot of respect for Ghana and it is one of the reasons that African Americans visit that Country so often. I really believe that the various ethnic groups in Nigeria should apologize for their role in the trade as well. It would only be symbolic, but it might ease tension and create trust between the tribes and the descendants of the slaves.

After reading your reply about the leadership in your country; it might not be Nigerians that need to fight back more than the African Americans. There is no reason for Nigeria to be where it is with the resources and the population that is in the country. I read an article the other day that noted that the Nigerians are the most educated group of immigrants in the USA. I don't understand how so many Nigerians can be so educated and how so many African Americans, most of whom ancestry is from modern Nigeria can be so educated; yet neither the Nigerians nor the African Americans can do anything to root out the corruption and ineptitude in Nigeria. We are a lost group of folks. I hope your power comes back on soon.

Well White people have an issue tolerating other White people. After all White people have had 2 World Wars where millions of their own people were left dead. America had a Civil War were a lot of White people killed each other. The Germans still hate the French and English. The Russians can't stand the Americans, so White people don't exactly show the tolerance towards each other that you believe.
