HealthFacts About Meningitis, Causes, Symptoms, Treatment And Prevention by Akemim(op): 7:54pm On Apr 02, 2017
Meningitis is inflammation of the meninges ( a collective name for the three membranes that envelope the brain and spinal cord). The meninges’ main function, alongside the cerebrospinal fluid, s to protect the central nervous system.

The swelling from meningitis typically triggers symptoms such as a headache, fever and a stiff neck.

Most cases are caused by a viral infection, but bacterial and fungal infections are other causes. Some cases of meningitis improve without treatment in a few weeks. Others can be life-threatening and require emergent antibiotic treatment.

Seek immediate medical care if you suspect that someone has meningitis. Early treatment of bacterial meningitis can prevent serious complications.

Causes
The most common cause of meningitis is a virus, followed by bacteria, and rarely fungi, and other certain organisms.

Bacterial Meningitis

Bacterial meningitis is generally a serious infection. Several strains of bacteria can cause meningitis, most commonly: Haemophilus influenzae (Haemophilus), Neisseria meningitides (meningococcus), Listeria monocytogenes (listeria), and Streptococcus pneumonia (pneumococcus) bacteria. People become infected when they are in close contact with the discharges from the nose or throat of a person who is infected.

The doctor needs to know what type of meningitis has infected the patient. Certain antibiotics can stop some types from infecting others.

Viral meningitis

Although viral meningitis is the most common, it is rarely a serious infection. It is usually mild and often clears on its own. Most cases are caused by a group of viruses known as enteroviruses, which are most common in late summer and early fall. There is no specific treatment for this type of meningitis. Viruses such as herpes simplex virus, HIV, mumps, West Nile virus and others also can cause viral meningitis.

Chronic meningitis

Slow-growing organisms (such as fungi and Mycobacterium tuberculosis) that invade the membranes and fluid surrounding your brain cause chronic meningitis. Chronic meningitis develops over two weeks or more. The symptoms include — headaches, fever, vomiting and mental cloudiness.

Fungal meningitis

Fungal meningitis is relatively uncommon and causes chronic meningitis. It may mimic acute bacterial meningitis. Fungal meningitis isn’t contagious from person to person. Cryptococcal meningitis is a common fungal form of the disease that affects people with immune deficiencies, such as AIDS. It’s life-threatening if not treated with an antifungal medication.

Symptoms

Meningitis is not always easy to recognize. In many cases, meningitis may be progressing with no symptoms at all. In its early stages, symptoms might be similar to those of flu.

Early symptoms broadly include:

Vomiting
Nausea
Muscle pain
High temperature (fever)
Headache
Cold hands and feet
A rash that does not fade under pressure. This rash might start as a few small spots in any part of the body – it may spread rapidly and look like fresh bruises. This happens because blood has leaked into the tissue under the skin. The rash or spots may initially fade and then come back.
Newborns and infants may show these signs:

Constant crying
Inactivity or sluggishness
a bulging fontenelle
being difficult to wake
Poor feeding
rapid/ unusual/ difficult breathing
pale or blotchy skin
red or purple spots that do not fade under pressure
In older children, you should look out for:

a stiff neck
severe pains and aches in your back and joints
sleepiness or confusion
a very bad headache (alone, not a reason to seek medical help)
a dislike of bright lights
very cold hands and feet
shivering
rapid breathing
red or purple spots that do not fade under pressure
Seizures

Diagnosis
Your family doctor or pediatrician can diagnose meningitis based on a medical history, a physical exam and certain diagnostic tests. During the exam, your doctor may check for signs of infection around the head, ears, throat and the skin along the spine.

You or your child may undergo the following diagnostic tests:

Blood cultures. Blood samples are placed in a special dish to see if it grows microorganisms, particularly bacteria. A sample may also be placed on a slide and stained (Gram’s stain), then studied under a microscope for bacteria.

Imaging. Computerized tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) scans of the head may show swelling or inflammation. X-rays or CT scans of the chest or sinuses may also show infection in other areas that may be associated with meningitis.

Spinal tap (lumbar puncture). For a definitive diagnosis of meningitis, you’ll need a spinal tap to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). In people with meningitis, the CSF often shows a low sugar (glucose) level along with an increased white blood cell count and increased protein.

CSF analysis may also help your doctor identify which bacterium caused meningitis. If your doctor suspects viral meningitis, he or she may order a DNA-based test known as a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification or a test to check for antibodies against certain viruses to determine the specific cause and determine proper treatment.

Treatment
The treatment depends on four main factors:

The age of the patient
The severity of the infection
The type
Are other medical conditions present?

Bacterial meningitis

Acute bacterial meningitis must be treated immediately with intravenous antibiotics and, more recently, corticosteroids. This helps to ensure recovery and reduce the risk of complications, such as brain swelling and seizures.

The antibiotic or combination of antibiotics depends on the type of bacteria causing the infection. Your doctor may recommend a broad-spectrum antibiotic until he or she can determine the exact cause of meningitis.

Viral meningitis

Antibiotics can’t cure viral meningitis, and most cases improve on their own in several weeks. Treatment of mild cases usually includes:

Bed rest
Plenty of fluids
Over-the-counter pain medications to help reduce fever and relieve body aches
Your doctor may prescribe corticosteroids to reduce swelling in the brain, and an anticonvulsant medication to control seizures. If a herpes virus caused your meningitis, an antiviral medication is available.

Prevention
Common bacteria or viruses that can cause meningitis can spread through coughing, sneezing, kissing, or sharing eating utensils, a toothbrush or a cigarette.

These steps can help prevent meningitis:

Wash your hands.Careful hand-washing helps prevent germs. Teach children to wash their hands often, especially before eating and after using the toilet, spending time in a crowded public place or petting animals. Show them how to vigorously and thoroughly wash and rinse their hands.

Practice good hygiene.Don’t share drinks, foods, straws, eating utensils, lip balms or toothbrushes with anyone else. Teach children and teens to avoid sharing these items too.

Stay healthy.Maintain your immune system by getting enough rest, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Cover your mouth. When you need to cough or sneeze, be sure to cover your mouth and nose.

If you’re pregnant, take care with food.Reduce your risk of listeriosis by cooking meat, including hot dogs and deli meat, to 165 F (74 C). Avoid cheeses made from unpasteurized milk. Choose cheeses that are clearly labeled as being made with pasteurized milk.

HealthTop 10 Diabetes Superfoods by Akemim(op): 12:16pm On Apr 01, 2017
1. Beans
Beans are among nature’s most nutritious foods. Whether you prefer kidney, pinto, navy, or black beans, you can’t find better nutrition than that provided by beans. They’re high in protein and fiber, making them a great option for vegetarians. They also deliver essential minerals like magnesium and potassium. And they’re low on the GI: black beans, for example, have a GI score of only 30 and chickpeas have a score of 10.

According to a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, beans may be a good way to control glycemic levels in people with type 2 diabetes. They can also reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.

2. Non-Starchy Vegetables
Non-starchy vegetables have fewer carbs per serving. They include everything from artichokes and asparagus to broccoli and beets. This category of veggies goes a long way in satisfying your hunger and boosting your intake of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytochemicals. These vegetables are also low in carbohydrates and calories, making them some of the few foods that people with diabetes can enjoy almost with abandon.

In fact, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) identifies most non-starchy vegetables as low GI foods with a ranking of 55 or less. A small study of 11 people found that a low-calorie diet consisting of non-starchy vegetables may successfully reverse type 2 diabetes.

3. Citrus Fruit
Grapefruits, oranges, lemons and limes. Oranges and grapefruit, in particular, provide a great source of fiber. To maximize this, make sure to eat the whole fruit rather than drink the juice. Research Studies have shown that eating citrus fruits can lower the risk of diabetes, but drinking the fruit juice can increase the risk.

The average orange has a GI score of 40 while unsweetened orange juice has a GI score of 50. The citrus with the lowest GI score is grapefruit. With a score of 25, grapefruit has one of the lowest GI scores of all fruits.

4. Dark Green Leafy Vegetables

Spinach, collards, kale – these powerhouse foods are so low in calories and carbohydrate. Kale, in particular, provides more than 100% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin A and vitamin K. Collard greens are packed with a ton of nutrients into a small package.

Kale contains chemicals called glucosinolates that help neutralize cancer-causing substances. It’s also full of potassium and has been shown to help manage blood pressure. This is another reason it’s considered a superfood for those with diabetes.

5. Berries
Which do you prefer; blueberries, strawberries, raspberries or blackberries?

From vision-protecting vitamin C to filling fiber, blueberries are antioxidant powerhouses. These berries have some of the highest antioxidant levels of any fruit or vegetable and may reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. They also have anti-inflammatory properties.

Strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are also excellent choices for a diabetic patient as they are all packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber.

6. Tomatoes
The good news is that no matter how you like your tomatoes, pureed, raw, cooked or in a sauce, tomatoes are full of lycopene, vitamin C, and iron

This is a powerful substance that may reduce the risk of cancer (especially prostate cancer), heart disease, and macular degeneration.

Like other non-starchy fruits, tomatoes have a low GI ranking. One study found that 200 grams of raw tomato (or about 1.5 medium tomatoes) each day reduced blood pressure. Researchers concluded tomato consumption might help reduce the cardiovascular risk that’s associated with type 2 diabetes.

7. Fish High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Salmon is a favorite in this category as it is loaded with omega-3-fatty acids, which can lower risk of heart disease.

It’s also full of vitamin D and selenium for healthy hair, skin, nails, and bones. Other nutrient-dense fish include herring, sardines, and mackerel.

Walnuts and flaxseeds contain magnesium, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids. Walnuts also contain alpha-linolenic acid, an essential fatty acid that boosts heart health and lowers cholesterol. They are rich in vitamin E, folic acid, zinc, and protein. An ounce of nuts can go a long way in providing key healthy fats along with hunger management.

Substituting nuts and other healthy fats for carbs can help lower blood sugar. Nuts generally have very low GI scores. Cashews, for example, have a score of 27, and peanuts have a score of only 7. Multiple studies have shown those who eat nuts regularly have less risk of developing diabetes.

9. Whole Grains
Whole grains are full of antioxidants and soluble and insoluble fiber. These help to metabolize fats and keep the digestive track healthy. People who eat hulled barley regularly have lower blood cholesterol. The grain also keeps blood sugar levels stable. Lentils are another good option since they provide B vitamins, iron, complex carbohydrates, and protein.

While 100% stone-ground whole wheat bread is considered a low GI food, other types of whole wheat bread may have medium GI rankings, with scores between 56 and 69. Eating whole grains can help decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

10. Fat-free Milk and Yogurt
In addition to calcium, many fortified dairy products are a good source of vitamin D. Fat-free dairy foods, including milk and yogurt, are fortified with vitamin D. These dairy products are smart choices for diabetics because they have low GI scores: Skim milk has a GI score of 32 while reduced fat yogurt has a GI score of 33.

Dairy intake, especially low-fat dairy, is also associated with a 9% lower risk for type 2 diabetes.

HealthAmazing Health Benefits Of Tumeric by Akemim(op): 8:29am On Mar 07, 2017
Tumeric, also known as curcuma longa, is an ancient spies and very common herb. Often referred to as the “Queen of Spices,” its main characteristics are a pepper-like aroma, sharp taste and golden color.
They belong to the ginger family and is a prized component of the culinary traditions of these cultures. Turmeric imparts a vibrant yellowish hue to curry dishes, and the spice is used as a natural dyeing agent for cloth. People across the globe use this herb in their cooking.

According to the Journal of the American Chemical Society, turmeric contains a wide range of antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anticarcinogenic, antimutagenic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Curcuminoids are the main phytochemicals that give turmeric its most impressive and wide-ranging health benefits. Amazingly, over 9,000 medical and clinical research studies have evaluated turmeric and curcumin and yielded a wealth of positive information.

It is also loaded with many healthy nutrients such as protein, dietary fiber, niacin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, potassium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium and zinc. Due to all these factors, turmeric is often used to treat a wide variety of health problems.

Turmeric may be the most effective nutritional supplement in existence.

Health benefits of Tumeric
Turmeric provides an abundance of antioxidants capable of supporting cellular health

1. Cancer Prevention

Turmeric can help prevent prostate cancer, stop the growth of existing prostate cancer and even destroy cancer cells. Multiple researchers have found that the active components in turmeric makes it one of the best protectors against radiation-induced tumors. It also has a preventive effect against tumor cells such as T-cell leukemia, colon carcinomas and breast carcinomas.

Studies have also shown that it can reduce angiogenesis (growth of new blood vessels in tumors), metastasis (spread of cancer), as well as contributing to the death of cancerous cells (1).

Multiple studies have shown that curcumin can reduce the growth of cancerous cells in the laboratory and inhibit the growth of tumours in test animals (2, 3).

2. Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Oxidative damage is believed to be one of the mechanisms behind aging and many chronic diseases.

Free radicals which are generated in the body tend to react with important organic substances, such as fatty acids, proteins or DNA.

The main reason antioxidants are so beneficial, is that they protect our bodies from free radicals by mopping up these free radicals and this helps keep inflammation at bare.

Curcumin happens to be a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals due to its chemical structure (4, 5).

But curcumin also boosts the activity of the body’s own antioxidant enzymes (6, 7, cool.

In that way, curcumin delivers a one-two punch against free radicals. It blocks them directly, then stimulates the body’s own antioxidant mechanisms.

3. Relieves Arthritis

The anti-inflammatory properties in turmeric are great for treating both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Arthritis is a common problem in the world.

There are several different types, but most involve some sort of inflammation in the joints.

Given that curcumin is a potent anti-inflammatory, it makes sense that it could help with arthritis.

It has been found that those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis who consumes turmeric on a regular basis experience much relief from the moderate to mild joint pains as well as joint inflammation.

Several studies show this to be true.

A research Studies carried out on patients with rheumatoid arthritis, curcumin was even more effective than an anti-inflammatory drug (9).

Other studies have looked at the effects of curcumin on arthritis and noted improvements in various symptoms (10, 11).

4. Anti-Depressants

Curcumin has shown some promise in treating depression.

Although few studies have been conducted on humans, dozens of research trials have proven that turmeric is especially effective in correcting depression symptoms in laboratory animals.

To address this issue a controlled trial was carried out on 60 patients who were randomized into three groups (12).

In One group took prozac, another group took a gram of curcumin and the third group took both prozac and curcumin.

After 6 weeks, curcumin had led to improvements that were similar to prozac. The group that took both prozac and curcumin fared best.

According to this (small) study, curcumin is as effective as an antidepressant.

5. Prevents Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease in the world and a leading cause of dementia.

Unfortunately, there is no good treatment available for Alzheimer’s yet. Therefore prevention is the best bet.

Inflammation and oxidative damage play a role in Alzheimer’s disease and curcumin has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant property (13).

Turmeric supports overall brain health by aiding in the removal of plaque build-up in the brain and improving the flow of oxygen.

This can also prevent or slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

6. Regulates Blood Sugar Level

Turmeric can be used in the treatment of diabetes by helping to moderate insulin levels. It also improves glucose control and increases the effect of medications used to treat diabetes.

Another significant benefit is turmeric’s effectiveness in helping reduce insulin resistance, which may prevent the onset of Type-2 diabetes.

However, when combined with strong medications, turmeric can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

It is best to consult a healthcare professional before taking turmeric capsules.

7. Reduces Cholesterol Level

Research has proven that simply using turmeric as a food seasoning can reduce serum cholesterol levels .

It is a known fact that high cholesterol can lead to other serious health problems. Maintaining a proper cholesterol level can prevent many cardiovascular diseases.

8. Wound Healing

Turmeric is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent and can be used as an effective disinfectant.

A study in the Sept 2014 issue of Life Sciences found that the curcumin in turmeric offers beneficial properties that appear to accelerate the wound healing process by soothing irritation and oxidation

If you have a cut or burn, you can sprinkle turmeric powder on the affected area to speed up the healing process. Turmeric also helps repair damaged skin and may be used to treat psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions.

HealthWhy Men Often Die Earlier Than Women (see Why) by Akemim(op): 8:51am On Mar 02, 2017
Many at times you wonder why men often die earlier than women.

This shouldn’t sound as a surprise to many who thought otherwise, statistics shows that men die earlier than women.

By statistics, 57% of all those ages 65 and older are female. By age 85, 67% are women. The average lifespan is about 7% longer for women than men worldwide.

It’s not hard to see the gender gap among the elderly.

SO WHY DO MEN, ON AVERAGE, DIE FIRST
There are many reasons why the ratio of men to women (which is roughly equal in young adulthood) starts to favor women over time. Among the most powerful factors are? Men tend to

Take bigger risks. Some of the reason seems to be “biological destiny.” The frontal lobe of the brain — the part that controls judgment and consideration of an action’s consequences — develops more slowly in boys and young men than in their female counterparts. This likely contributes to the fact that far more boys and men die in accidents or due to violence than girls and women. Examples include biking, driving drunk, and homicide. This tendency toward lack of judgment and consideration of consequences may also contribute to detrimental lifestyle decisions among young men, such as smoking or drinking to excess.
On average men are much more disposed to take risk than women. Also in our country where poverty is on the increase men are predisposed into taking risk even at old age than women.

Have more dangerous jobs.Men far outnumber women in some of the riskiest occupations, including military combat, firefighting, hard labour, and working at construction sites for daily bread.
Due to this, men are more exposed to dangerous situations like stress, environmental hazard, occupational hazard etc.

Die of heart disease more often and at a younger age.In fact, men are 50% more likely than women to die of heart disease. The fact that men have lower estrogen levels than women may be part of the reason. But medical risks, such as poorly treated high blood pressure or unfavorable cholesterol levels, may contribute as well.
Also due to the fact that men are exposed to more risk like drug abuse, this tends to predispose them to heart disease early in life.

Commit suicide more often than women. This is true despite the fact that depression is considered more common among women than men. But the rate of suicide in men is quite more in men than in women, this is a question of method.Women make more non-violent suicide attempts like overdosing than men who try violent methods like hanging, strangulation and suffocation. Some attribute this to the tendency for men to avoid seeking care for depression and the cultural norms that discourage men from seeking help for mental illness.
Be less socially connected. For reasons that aren’t entirely clear, people with fewer and weaker social connections (including men) tend to have higher death rates due to depression and boredom.
Avoid doctors.According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, men are far more likely to skip routine health screens and far less likely than women to have seen a doctor of any kind during the previous year.
The uneven playing field for boys starts early. The Y chromosome tends to develop mutations more often than X chromosomes and the lack of a second X chromosome in men means that X-linked abnormalities among boys are not “masked” by a second, normal version. Survival in the womb is also less reliable for male fetuses (for uncertain, and probably multiple, reasons). Developmental disorders are also more common among boys; some of these could shorten life expectancy.

WHAT CAN MEN DO TO LIVE LONGER
While there’s not much that can be done about some of these factors, others are modifiable. For example, since men tend to avoid medical care far more often than women, getting men to report symptoms (including depression) and go for regular follow-up for chronic medical problems (such as high blood pressure) could counter some of the tendency for them to die at a younger age.

It’s also worth noting that the survival gap between men and women reflects an average tendency among large numbers of people. In fact, plenty of wives predecease their husbands. Individual risk factors (such as smoking, diabetes, or a strong family history of breast cancer) can outweigh the general tendency for women to live longer.

Perhaps we’ll be more successful in the future in avoiding preventable, premature death among men (and women) — and, because many of these efforts will have a bigger impact on men, the gender gap among the elderly may eventually narrow.

OP.... U dont have to stop impacting knowledge, but you shouldn't do it at your own detriment... What i mean is this, if u haven't covered up ur scheme of work, going ahead to teach your colleagues is a distraction... And You also need to master the art of answering questions,...... I could remember a friend of mine use to teach us, but when the result is out he will have D while all of us will have either A or B.... And another thing, when you are teaching, they should also contribute, and don't feel as If you know it all... Because THAT is where you will fail....

core northern states are believed to be those in the northwest like kaduna, kano, katsina, sokoto, zamfara, jigawa and kebbi and also the northeast with the likes of borno, gombe, taraba, yobe, bauchi and adamawa while the north central is excluded, so states like plateau, nassarawa, benue, kogi, kwara, niger and abuja are not core northern states if you look at it that way.
