Education / Re: Why OAU School Fees Increased And Cannot Be Reversed – PRO by Alayotech(m): 10:22am On Aug 22, 2014
Before OAU decided to increase the fees, we did our homework very well. We went round most of the federal universities including the University of Lagos, Akoka and we discovered that out of all these universities, OAU was the only university where students were paying the most ridiculous fee. We had our points and the Senate of this university ratified everything, and it gave the management of the university go ahead. We must understand the fact that the Senate comprises professors from various disciplines of different faculties of this university. And on the case of parents earning N18, 000 minimum wage, are you saying because of that, the university should not charge fees?
The students that you are soliciting for, most of them uses BlackBerry, some of them are on monthly subscription of N5, 000 for different communication networks. If N5, 000 x 12 is 60,000, a student in this university who does that should be able to accord his or her education priority. Anywhere in the world, OAU remains the university with the cheapest fees. Apart from this, you would agree with me that most of the students here attended private primary and secondary schools where they paid minimum of N40, 000 per term making N120, 000 per session. Are we saying that in all honesty, somebody whose parents could afford N120, 000 in a year at secondary level won’t be able to pay less than N80, 000 for university education? Or is it because we had made it lesser for people to come in when the economy of this country was buoyant? The students’ position cannot in anyway be justified.
So is the university saying its doors should be locked against children of the poor?
That is not possible and that is why the management has introduced new measures to accommodate the indigent students.
The Senate in conjunction with the VC has set up bursary and scholarships committee for the indigent students. We felt that brilliant students should not be deprived of having their educational attainment because we are all citizens of this country and so the business of the standing committee is to assess the applications from the indigent students in a fair manner so they can be assisted.

Education / Why OAU School Fees Increased And Cannot Be Reversed – PRO by Alayotech(m): 10:20am On Aug 22, 2014
The reasons OAU School fees got increased and why it cannot be cannot be reversed or reduced have been made public by the PRO of the University.

Obafemi Awolowo Universityis now open after the resumption date was announced. You will recall that the University was shut for more than two months due to students’ protest to the school fees increase.

Read the full details of the reasons the school fees were increased and why they are irreversible:
OAU campus has been shut for more than two months due to students’ protest, how can you justify the closure?

The closure is to allow peace to reign and to let public know that the university management has respect for human lives and property.

The Senate of the university decided to close down the campus when the students were protesting the minor adjustments in the fees payable by them and we felt that being the best university in Nigeria for the fourth time running now, we should be able to use what we have as a standard and maintain such standard because the financial standing of the university could not in all be used to sustain the standard that OAU is noted for all over the world.

What are the details of these new fees?

Let me begin by giving you the background to the new fee regime so that we will all understand the issue.

The university did not just wake up overnight to increase its fees. The management felt the economic realities does not support the payment of N5,300, N7,800,and N10,300 per session by each student depending on the courses of study which had been on for quite some years.

The university in conjunction with the senate decided that the fees should be adjusted to N19, 700 for those in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, while those in Sciences should be paying N33, 700. Are we saying that this money is too much for students in this university in this 21st Century? The economic realities of this country would not allow us to continue with the old rate, which had been on for the past 14 years. And when you consider those who use the facilities on the campus, you find out it is the students who consume more.

For instance, the university pays as much as N30 million electricity bill on monthly basis and more than 92 per cent of this electricity is consumed by the students because they are on the campus 24 hours using electric stoves, boiling rings and several other power consuming objects, yet they are the ones unwilling to pay.

So, if truly we want to sustain the academic sanctity of our school and our rating as the best university in Nigeria, the school management decided that it would be good to have more contribution from the parents to support what we get from the Federal Government in maintaining our standards. But the students decided to be unruly, and when the demonstration was turning violent, the university management in conjunction with the senate decided to shut down the school.

But you claimed the university had never increased fees in the last 14 years, what about the N20, 000 acceptance fee introduced about three years ago and other minor increments?

What happened then was a kind of adjustment in the accommodation. We all know that the university’s yearly business is to maintain the halls of residence by putting in new facilities which cost money and if we look at it closely, you will agree with me that the students themselves know the realities on ground because when they go outside campus to rent a house, they know how much they pay and they also know that when Power Holding Company of Nigeria takes electricity, they have no right to protest because they know it is not the fault of the landlords but anytime there’s electrical failure in the university environment for just a day, you will see them chanting ‘war’ songs.

The acceptance fee is part of the internally generated revenue for new students here. The students who are being asked to pay this fee are not yet our students because until the acceptance fee is paid and it should be clearly noted that this fees is meant for new students alone and not an additional fees to returning students.

It could be truth that the economic realities and the dwindling allocation may not support the needs of the university, but have you also considered the fact that most of the parents are also on N18, 000 minimum wage?

Education / Mass Failure: WAEC Inaugurates New Initiative For Candidates by Alayotech(m): 9:28am On Aug 22, 2014
The West African Examinations Council has inaugurated the Walk-in-Candidates initiative for candidates sitting for its examinations.

This was unveiled on Wednesday by the Head, National Office of WAEC Nigeria, Mr. Charles Eguridu, while speaking with journalists in Lagos.

According to him, the initiative is for private candidates sitting for the council’s November/December and has commenced with the ongoing registration for the November/December examination.

Unfolding the modalities for the concept, Eguridu explained that interested candidates could access the facility by visiting any of the council’s zonal or branch offices with their passport photographs and registration fee of N25, 000.

Hitherto, normal registration for the examination was N11, 400.
“The council has been under pressure from stakeholders to extend registration following the outcome of the May/June examination. Those who have challenges in their results now have the opportunity to register for another examination.

Eguridu, while noting that the initiative was a flexible one, said it offered candidates the opportunity to register “not later than the day of the paper they intend to sit.”

On the cost, the HNO stated that it was reasonable, considering the logistics involved in the process.

He said, “It is not so costly. It is also not a punitive measure. Before now, we had penalty of N10, 000 for candidates who failed to register within the stipulated time. This move is going to be an additional responsibility for us.

The cost of conducting examination in the country is enormous. The cost of printing materials, certificates, checking malpractice, and paying examiners is huge and this explains why the government subsidizes the council’s activities.

“If we want our children to have quality education, we need to pay for it. You cannot make an omelet without breaking an egg.

Meanwhile, Eguridu, while announcing the result of the 2014 May/June last week, inaugurated the “Candidates Identity Verification, Attendance, Malpractice and Post Examinations Management System” and the council’s customised mathematical set.

According to him, the target of these fresh moves is to have credible, standard, and fraud free examinations.

He had said, “With effect from May/June 2014 WASSCE, the council introduced a device known as Candidates Identity Verification, Attendance, Malpractice and Post Examinations Management System.

This ICT-driven device enables supervisors and staff of the council on duty, to address and record the processes in real time, on the day of the examination.

“These include identity verification, capturing and recording occurrences as they happen, such as candidates’ attendance and examination malpractice and transmit the same to our data base. With this, the council is able to generate valid examination reports for each examination centre.”

With the introduction of the mathematical set, Eguridu urged candidates not to enter the examination halls with unapproved calculators.

He declared, “The council, beginning with the November/December 2014 WASSCE, in order to maintain uniformity, guard against malpractice and improve standards, has designed and is introducing customized, transparent mathematical sets, with in-built non-programmable scientific calculators, which conform to the rules and regulations of its examinations.

“Therefore, all prospective candidates, both the May/June and November/December WASSCE diets, should note that, henceforth, bringing in any other non-approved mathematical set or calculator into examination halls would not be allowed. Models of the WAEC-customised mathematical set would be made available to schools to assist them in preparing their candidates for the council’s examinations.”

Following the release of the result last week, no fewer than 1,163,010 candidates had their chances of securing university admission in the country dashed as they failed to obtain the basic entry requirement.
To secure admission to the nation’s university, a candidate must obtain credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

Eguridu had announced that only 529,425 of the 1, 692, 435 candidates, who sat the examination, obtained credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

Education / Nigerian Teenage Scientists Develops Cure For Mouth Odour, Wins Award by Alayotech(m): 9:10am On Aug 22, 2014
Two teenagers from Nigeria,Eveshorhema Samuel-Alli and Ibukunoluwa Oladeindethat proudly represented Nigeria at the 2014 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, California, USA, have bagged an award as a result of their research work on Halistosia a.k.a mouth odour.

HALITOSIS or bad breath, is an unpleasant odour of the mouth present on exhaled breath.

According to medical experts, this very embarrassing condition which can be acute (occasional) or chronic (long-lasting), could be caused by several factors including food, poor dental hygiene, tobacco products, health problems, dry mouth, mouth infections, dentures or braces and medications.

Bad breath has caused otherwise well qualified people to lose employment opportunities, caused job losses, and friendships/marriages to crash. In their search for a solution, the two students ofDoregos Private Academy, Ipaja, Lagos, carried out research on African walnut (Coula edulis), a member of the tree nut family common in Nigeria. At the end, they discovered that apart from its cancer-fighting properties, rare antioxidants, benefits for the heart and circulatory system, weight control, improved reproductive health in men, brain health and diabetes, walnut could also cure bad breath.

According to Eveshorhema, the idea for this project came while on a school trip to a rural area in Nigeria where the host community served them walnuts.
“When I woke up in the morning, I hadn’t brushed my teeth yet but my breath was already fresh. Then I remembered I had eaten walnuts the previous night.” To confirm her suspicion, she ate more nuts the following night and awoke with fresh breath again and that made them to carry out further research.

“This project actually won us a Life Science Award of $1,000 in the Medicine and Health Science category, courtesy, Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society.”
The experiment:
“The Halitosis project has to do with mouth odour and we used a common Nigerian snack, the walnut, to cure mouth odour because it is a very embarrassing problem. Your best friend won’t tell you that your mouth is smelling so we had to find a solution to it.

Consent forms

“We conducted this experiment using 35 volunteers who were students of our school. we sent out parents consent forms and when we received the parents’ consent, we continued the experiment. The volunteers were divided into four groups. The duo then made two different walnut products.
Walnut chewing gum: “We made walnut chewing gum by adding resins and sucrose to chopped walnuts.
Walnut mouthwash: “Also, we made a walnut mouthwash mixing chopped walnut, water and 10 per cent lime as preservative.
One group was given whole walnuts to eat; thev second group was given walnut chewing gum; the third was given walnut mouthwash while the last group was given nothing so they were the control group.
“They took the walnut morning and night. We then observed them and recorded the results. They did not brush their teeth for the duration of the experiment. They were going only on walnut so we would be able to see the improvement,” said Eveshorhema Samuel-Alli.
“After this, we conducted an experiment using Lead tri-oxo nitrate (v) in which the volunteers were made to blow bubbles into a solution of lead nitrate and water before and after the experiment.
“Before they took the walnut and walnut products, they were made to blow bubbles into the solution and then we recorded how long it took to turn the solution black. What turns the solution black is hydrogen sulphide and that is what causes mouth odour. So if it takes a short time, that means the mouth odour is actually very bad. Then after the experiment, they were also made to blow bubbles into the solution and this time, it was noticed that there was significant time lapse before the solution turned black.
When the control group who had bacteria in their mouths, blew bubbles into the solution, it turned black while it remained clear when the other groups blew bubbles into it. So we knew that the walnut was actually working to cure halitosis.”
Bacterial culture:From the results obtained, the duo suspected that some chemicals like alkaloids, oleic acid and tannins in the African walnut must be killing some of the odour-causing bacteria in the mouth. So they swabbed the mouths of each volunteer, grew the bacteria and counted the number. They found out that those who had the walnut treatment had fewer bacterial load.

Sports / Nigeria: Confident Falconets Seek Vengeance Against Korea by Alayotech(m): 10:59am On Aug 20, 2014
FOUR years ago in Germany, Nigeria's U-20 women's team, Falconets, took everyone by surprise by reaching the final of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.

Though the coach Adet Egan-led Falconets lost the title to the host country, Germany, they were able to set a record as the first African women team to play in the final of a FIFA World Cup.

Four years on, the Falconets are on the move once again, this time in Canada. The team will trade tackles with Korea in a semifinal encounter today and the players and their officials are talking tough.

For Coach Peter Dedevbo, anything short of the final ticket today will not be accepted. Reasons: Coach Dedevbo had on two different occasions suffered defeats in the hands of the Koreans in the FIFA World Cup at the U-17 level. He was in charge of the Flamingoes at the 2010 edition of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, where they lost to the fast moving Koreans in the quarterfinals.

Two years later, he led the same team to another quarterfinal finish, no thanks to another defeat in the hands of the Koreans.

"My team has played against the Koreans twice in 2010 and 2012 at the U-17 level in which we lost. But this time around, it will be a different ball game," he said. "With this U-20 team (Falconets), that jinx of losing in the quarterfinal has been broken. We've made it to the semi-finals, and I am not scared of Korea DPR because I know that, with the quality of players I have, this team will qualify for the final," Dedevbo said.

Like all past matches played in this competition, Dedevbo is aiming to score early goals in today's match against the Koreans. He is banking on the experience of players like Asisat Oshoala, who emerged MVP in the game against New Zealand, Uchechi Sunday, Ugo Njoku, Courtney Dike, Loveth Ayinla, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Uchenna Kanu, Yetunde Adeboyejo, Sarah Nnodim and team captain, Patience Okaeme, to do the damage against the Koreans later today.

To the coach, who led the Falconets to the final of the FIFA U-20 World Cup four years ago in Germany, Adat Egan, the girls must be business minded in this encounter to defeat the Koreans.

He noted that picking a final ticket at any FIFA competition requires high tactical approach and discipline. "They have done well so far, but this is the stage our girls need to show that they are much hungrier for the title. For Korea to get to this stage of the competition means they are very good. I wish Falconets the best of luck," Egan said.

Politics / Ribadu Speaks At Last - 'why I Defected' by Alayotech(m): 10:28am On Aug 20, 2014
Four days after his defection from the All Progressives Congress [APC] to the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] became public, a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC], Nuhu Ribadu, has personally given an insight into why he crossed to the ruling party.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page Mr. Ribadu said his "carefully considered decision" to defect to another party was in "in pursuit of a good cause, and never out of any selfish interests".
He did not expatiate on what this good cause is but he said his next step in his political struggle would be made known in due time.
"I know how difficult it may be for you to come to terms with my defection to another party," Mr. Ribadu said. "But I must assure you that it's a carefully considered decision for which I do not wish to hurt anyone's feeling. I'll not embark on a needless animosity with my good friends, irrespective of political, religious, regional and ethnic affiliations.
"For now, I wish to assure you that my defection is in pursuit of a good cause, and never out of any selfish interests as portrayed by a section. Thanks for bearing with me on this decision, and for those who have been in solidarity with my struggles and still giving me the benefits of the doubt, I'm most grateful. I'll never let you down on this new path."
The former EFCC chairman, who was reacting to a report quoting him as disparaging his former colleagues in the APC, said although he had left the opposition party, he would continue to hold its leaders in high esteem.
He said, "Let me quickly make it known that I did not issue a statement disparaging APC and its members, including Governors Amaechi, Kwankwaso... These were clearly fabricated, expected backlash, by mischievous characters interested in misleading the public and drawing a picture of non-existent feuds between me and my good friends.
"My defection shouldn't be seen as an initiation of political antagonism with my good friends in another party. I still hold them in high esteem, and even where there are marked differences, I believe there are decorous and honorable ways of resolving them.

So, kindly disregard any statement said to be by me attacking the personality of any politician since my defection. I'll never allow myself to be drawn into such disrespectful exchange."
Mr. Ribadu formally joined the PDP in Bako ward of Yola South Local Government on Saturday, to the chagrin of the APC, whose National Chairman, John Oyegun, described the development as "very terrible".
The Chairman of Youth for Good Governance in Adamawa State, a PDP Pressure group supporting Ribadu's candidature, Isa Toungo, told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Ribadu was given a membership card with registration number 1933795.
On Monday the former EFCC chairman obtained the expression of Interest and nomination forms to run for Adamawa Governor in the October 11 election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
One of his associates, Hamidu Mahmud, who led the team that went to the national headquarters of the PDP in Abuja to obtain the forms, said contrary to reports, the former APC presidential candidate did not join the PDP just to pick automatic governorship ticket.
He also said Mr. Ribadu had already applied for waiver in line with the party's constitutional provision to enable him qualifies and participates in the election.
Mr. Mahmud also dismissed the notion that Mr. Ribadu was in the contest at the behest of President Goodluck Jonathan.

"The framers of the PDP Constitution did not insert the waiver clause in anticipation of Nuhu Ribadu; it is a principle of general application. So, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, having joined the party, is expected to enjoy this waiver clause that is in the PDP Constitution," Mr. Mahmud said.

"We have applied for the waiver and we are awaiting the decision of the party on that. We are not aware that the President wants Ribadu, it was some PDP Chieftains in the state that called on Ribadu to come and contest for the governorship of the state. So, the question of the President wanting Ribadu does not arise in this case."

Sports / Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid: Raul Garcia Strike Denies James by Alayotech(m): 7:35am On Aug 20, 2014
James Rodriguez put the Champions League winners in front, but an equaliser just minutes later sets up what should be a tense second leg

Real Madridand James Rodriguez were thwarted by a late Raul Garcia strike as they drew 1-1 with Atletico Madridin the first leg of the Supercopa de Espana.
James put Madrid in front with a scrappy goal on 81 minutes and was on course to be the match winner until Garcia's close range finish with just two minutes of normal time remaining. Carlo Ancelotti made two changes to the starting team that claimed the Uefa Super Cup with a 2-0 win over Sevilla on August 12.
Xabi Alonso took Rodriguez's place in midfield and Marcelo came in at left-back with Fabio Coentrao dropped to the bench.
In their first competitive game since losing to Real in the Champions League final, La Liga champions Atletico had just six players from that starting XI in the line-up again.
Pre-game, a touching tribute was paid to Real Madrid great Alfredo Di Stefano, who died in July at the age of 88.
The hosts started the better and more lively of the two teams, pushing Atletico deeper into their own half, with rash challenges from Koke and Guilherme Siqueira seeing both yellow carded.
Mario Mandzukic and Saul had opportunities for Atletico soon after, but goalkeeper Iker Casillas stood firm to deny both efforts.
Mandzukic had another decent chance after Casillas could only punch a clearance straight to him, but the Croatia international's attempted lob went straight into the goalkeeper's hands.
Gareth Bale almost opened the scoring two minutes into the second half as he forced Atletico goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moya into a strong save from an angle.
Moya was needed again in the 68th minute as he pushed away a powerful Bale free-kick, before Toni Kroos volleyed the rebound well over from inside the area.

Karim Benzema put a header onto the roof of the net before Rodriguez, who replaced an anonymous Cristiano Ronaldo at half-time, made the breakthrough.
Kroos played Daniel Carvajal in down the right and his cross was aimed for Benzema before a scramble led to Rodriguez finishing via a deflection.
But Atletico would find a way in the 88th minute as Garcia tapped in Koke's corner after being left unmarked right in front of Casillas.
Real had a penalty shout turned down late in the encounter as they were left on the back foot heading into the second leg.

Culture / [must Read] 10 Barbaric Practices That Still Exist In Nigeria Today by Alayotech(m): 5:02pm On Aug 01, 2014
Civilization has saturated Nigeria with modern gadgets that have made communication easier, business transactions exciting, religion very comfortable and human relationship better.
However, civilization still has a long way to go when it comes to eradicating a lot of barbaric practices that our ancient fathers had practiced.
We have the following die hard barbaric practices still happening in Nigeria; -
Female Genital Mutilation

Even some so called civilized and educated parents including few who are outside the shores of Africa are still supporting this act called female circumcision. It is believed to be a religious obligation that can control the libido of a woman.

Osu – The Igbo caste system

An osu is considered as a person who is owned by the gods. In some parts of the Eastern Nigeria, this practice is still on. The victims are not expected to have any dealing with others.

Maltreatment Of Widows

In some parts of the Eastern Nigeria, when a
husband dies, the widow is subjected to an untold suffering. Everything that is owned by the husband is taken away, leaving her and kids to look for help elsewhere.

Witch Hunts

In this era where aircraft are flying around the skies, people are still haunting for people who are believed to be witches. When someone is identified as a witch that is the end of public association with that person. Sometimes, they are killed without allowing the law to take its position in the matter.

Slavery

The end of the ancient slavery where the blacks were subjected to labour has come and gone. It has been replaced by modern slavery which seems to be the worse. Ladies are sold outside their countries for prostitution and other ill vices. Kids are kidnapped and taken to farms to work and child trafficking has equally made it a lucrative business.

Little Witches

From Akwa State, you would come to hear that some kids are witches who cause misfortune to their families and loved ones.
These kids are not spared with violence and they are often maimed for life.

Cannibalism
People still eat their fellow humans in some parts of Nigeria. Most times, we do not hear about it but in few cases, their atrocities are opened to the public.

Human Sacrifice

The ancient gods are still powerful in some parts of Nigeria where humans are required for sacrifices to appease one god or the other.

Rituals

We always find people with some parts of the bodies cut after they must have been killed for some sort of rituals.

Cultism

This is rampant and has become one of the dared cultures in almost every city in Nigeria. The members are feared and the public stay away from them to avoid being punished or at times killed

Nairaland / General / Family Announces Burial Arrangement For Late Prof. Dora Akunyili by Alayotech(m): 4:13pm On Aug 01, 2014
The burial arrangement for late NAFDAC boss Prof. Dora Akunyili has been announced by her family. The burial arrangement is contained in a statement signed by her husband Dr Chike Akunyili which was posted on her Facebook wall this evening. Find it below…

The family of former Minister of Information and Communications, late Prof. (Mrs.) Dora Nkem Akunyili, has released a week-long programme of activities for her funeral, culminating in her burial on Thursday, August 28, 2014.

The programme, released today in Enugu by Prof. Akunyili’s husband, Dr. Chike Akunyili, starts with a Christian Wake-Keep at No. 2A Bishop Onyeabor St., G.R.A. Enugu, to hold from 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 22.

A Night of Tributes is to hold at International
Conference Centre Abuja from 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 25, while a Mass would be held for her at Pro-Cathedral Catholic Church, Abuja, by 10:00 a.m. the next day, August 26.

After the Church Service, Dora’s body would leave for Enugu, where there would be a Mass at KSJ Temple at 4:00 p.m. After a High Requiem Mass at Holy Ghost Cathedral Enugu at 9:00 a.m. the next day (Wednesday, August 27), Dora’s body would be taken to UNCOMA Hall, College of Medicine, Ituku Ozalla, Enugu, for Final College Assembly to start from 11:30 a.m. From there, the body would be taken to Awka for Anambra State Government activities, then to Dora’s father’s house in Nanka, before being returned to her husband’s house at Agulu for a Vigil Mass/Wake-Keep.

On Thursday, August 28, Dora’s body would lie in state at John Chike Akunyili’s Compound before leaving for Agulu Town Hall, then Madonna Catholic Church Agulu
for a Requiem Mass to hold by 10:00 a.m. Interment at John Chike Akunyili’s Compound follows at 1:30 p.m.
Dr. Akunyili in a statement expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their outpouring of love and support for his family at this moment of grief. “This has gone a great way in helping us to cope with the monumental
loss of our precious gem, my beloved wife, Dora,” he said.

It would be recalled that Prof. (Mrs.) Akunyili, a former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), died last Saturday, June 7, after a two-year battle with cancer. Prof. (Mrs.) Akunyili, who was a delegate to the on- going National Conference in Abuja, would have turned 60 on July 14, 2014.
Signed:
Dr. Chike Akunyili (Husband)
