EPISODE 15

He almost threw her down with the force at which he jumped on her. Ndidi carried him and he said “Ndi-ka, I really missed you” then threw his hands around her neck for a tighter hug. This immediately brought tears to her eyes. It was like she just met her baby brother all again. “I miss you more Hara” she whispered back into his ears. Their bond so strong that even death could not break it. Together they returned back to the Obiri.
Back at the Obiri, Mazi Amuneke has put himself together. Everyone was surprise to see that he could recognize Ndidi. Addressing Ego Mazi Amuneke said “That’s Ndidi, his elder sister. He called her Ndi-ka. They were very close”.
“I can see that. It further proves we are at the right place. So what really happened to Onwuhara?” she asked.
“Long time ago, my wife Ukamaka put to bed a beautiful baby girl; our first child but before we could name her, she passed away. We were anguished and hurt by the sudden death of our child. Uka cried for days, backing the crying with starvation.
I invited an Ogbanje dibia who after examining the lines on the dead baby’s palm told us that the baby was an Ogbanje. With charcoal he marked the corpse in the same area that your son has his birthmark. He departed that day after telling us to watch out for the next child whether he would come back with a birthmark in that area.
Uka took in and gave birth to another beautiful girl child. We keenly and closely observed her but she didn’t come with any birthmark. We named her Ndidi; she brought the lost joy and gladness back to my household. We thought we had overcome. We thought we had broken the cycle of Ogbanje.
Uka gave birth to another baby girl but this one came with the birthmark. I quickly invited the dibia, who came and examined the lines on her palms. To prolong the baby’s life he cut a line across her palm and rubbed a certain herbal ingredient into the wound. Assuring us that this would keep the illness at bay until the baby was old enough to speak and reveal the place where the object of her oath to the Ogbanje cult was hidden or buried. This worked as the baby stayed till she was named but not till she was old enough to expose the hidden object. Seven market days after her naming ceremony; Onwubiko kicked the bucket leaving us once again in grief and pain. The dibia advised me to cut off her left little finger to make the Ogbanje league expel our child because they dislike ugliness and deformities of any kind. I gave in and acted as instructed.

EPISODE 14

She continued this time addressing Mazi Amuneke“My son Osundu has been making statements indicating you were his father in his past life; that his name used to be Onwuhara. He made mention of a sister named Ndidi and a mother named Uka”. She stopped expecting some kind of reaction from the people but to her greatest surprise none was fed her. So she continued “I decided to make this trip here when he pointed at a man in the market place and said he was one the people that burnt him alive”.
At the mention of been burnt alive Mazi Amuneke who has not uttered any word but instead buried his head thinking, raised it up and took a sharp look at her saying “So you have come to confirm whether it is truth?”
“Yes” she replied him “And to know why he was burnt alive?” she added.
Beckoning on Osundu to come, Mazi Amuneke asked “Does he have a birthmark behind his neck?
“Yes” she responded with a nod, slightly pushing Osundu over to him.
He turned Osundu over as he and the three elders examined the birthmark; moments after they all nodded in agreement after whispering to each other. Convinced, he said “He is the one. He came back. Onwuhara my son came back” and pulled him closer into a long tight hug. Then gradually he became emotional, his eyes wet with tears, he sobbed “he came back not as an Ogbanje; we succeeded. He came back not as my son like he said he would. He came back into a rich family like he said he would. I wish we could go back in time, so I can apologize for all the wrongs I did you. But I know it is now too late”. At this point the old man was basically wailing like a child; tears streaming down his cheeks uncontrollably. They all allowed him to pour out his grief.
Osundu without saying anything began tapping the old man on his back. He was still consoling him when he saw a young lady coming from the opposite direction. Swiftly he broke away from the hug and ran towards her screaming with excitement “Ndi-ka! Ndi-ka! Ndi-ka! This was the first time Osundu was setting his eyes in her. She was now married and as sure was in her husband’s house. She came this evening after been invited by her father. So far she is the only person he has been able to recognize.

To avoid being a laughing stock to... Not "to avoid been a laughing stock to ..." Their social classes disappeared into tin air not "tiny air". favor should be favour. The prior is American English while the latter is the recognised British English. Also apologizing and apologized should be written in British English.
Her father warned her not "warmed her". She thought of all that had happened not "has happened".
Thanks boss, I will effect those changes, I really appreciate this!

EPISODE 13

One of the benefits of being rich is that you can get almost anything done as soon as possible provided you can pay for it even with little or no information. Ego was able to locate the residence of the past parents of her son in just two days. The next day, she and some members of her guards set out to Nnewi leaving Ndubisi in charge of everything including making all business transactions.
On her way, she made few stops to visit other farmers like herself to inquire for latest information and advice, which was her way of staying ahead. She also did some philanthropic duties, giving aids to the poor and needy. All these made the journey longer making it three days before they got to the compound of Mazi Amuneke. They were giving a warm welcome suitable for a king. The woman of the house quickly drew a warm bath for Ego and her son; they were fed and given a place to rest.
That evening when the sun had gone down, she and her company were invited into the family’s Obiri where the purpose of her visit was to be made known. Everyone was seated; palm wine and kola nut has been served. Mazi Amuneke stood up; addressing Ego he said “Nne, you are highly welcome”.
Ego smiled, stood and responded “Nnayi thank you. My elders I greet you all. I consider myself fortunate to be in your presence. May the gods continue to bless and guide you”.
Everyone present echo “Ishe!”
Still addressing Ego, Mazi Amuneke continued “So to what do we own this peculiar visit?” The people began nodding in agreement while some discussed among themselves. They have been wondering what has brought a woman of such wealth and prestige to their home.
Ego stood up again and began “Nnayi, thank you once again. If you have a skin infection, you don’t wait till it is all over you body before you invite the dibia to take a look at it, you invite him immediately you start seeing the symptoms”. They all nodded, with some saying “Eziokwu!”
EPISODE 12

It has now been over four market days since that last hair-raising episode with Osundu. He hasn’t made any other statement about his past life and Ego has been thankful to the gods that her prayers that night have been answered.
They were in the market to get things that will be needed for the upcoming chieftaincy title she was planning on taking. She was browsing the stalls for a wrapper that will be-fit a woman of her status who will soon be addressed as “Ego beke of Umudibia”. Then on the spur of the moment Osundu who has been doing a selection of his own under the trader’s table among the pieces of wrappers tightly grabbed his mother’s legs, burying his face in-between, crying out loud like one that has seen a ghost.
Everyone present was shocked at the strange behavior that the young star executed. Ego quickly bent down and carried her son, who was still crying and hiding his face with eyes shut tight. She began asking him “Nna, what is it? What can I get you? Do you want some bean cake? He didn’t reply any instead continued crying. The trader suggested she took the boy away from the place, that he was no longer comfortable. Ego acted accordingly carrying him away. Few feet away, he stopped crying; she then asked him why he was crying?
Osundu pointed at a man that was standing opposite the place, where they were previously purchasing things from, whispered into his mother’s ear saying “He is one of the people that burnt me alive”.
These words gave her horripilate, turning her skin to a goose bump city. Her legs went weak with fear; horrified at the image of people burning a human alive, wondering what Osundu did that led to such brutality. What could be so odious that would result to such punishment? The worst part of it was she could not even pin out the particular individual that her son was accusing. Even if she was able to identify the man, how can she ask someone that kind of question? On her way home that particular day, she made up her mind to pay a visit to the supposed past family, to confirm or refute Osondui’s story. She needed firsthand information on what really happened and what kind of person reincarnated as her son.

EPISODE 11

When both of them were far enough from the compound, Ogadimma pulled her close, gave her a tight hug and bided her goodbye. Once alone, Nnenne quickly wiped away her tears, making up her mind never to cry again. Of course she can't go back home, there was nothing there for her. No one would want to associate with her in any way for they believe she is cursed. So she carried on with the plan she and lover once had.
Not long after she settled in and was living a new life in the new town, she discovered she was pregnant with Nwosu's child. When the child was born, she named him Ikenna after consulting the gods and it was discovered that he was not a reincarnation of her lover. She never got married for she was scared to pass the curse she posses to an innocent family. Rather, she focused her energy on training and bringing up her only son till he was old enough to get married. Whenever her son's wife gave birth, she was always present to know who came back as her grandchild for she had not given up her search for her true love.
That very night, after sharing this story with us, she and Amuwa past the night in the same hut and both of them did not see the sun rise the next day. Till this very day, no one knows what happened to them. Some rumored they have gone to be with each other in the land of the dead forever as planned".
Ego with her hands folded just below her breast said “I think I have heard enough for just one night. I beg to retire to my bed. I have a very busy tomorrow”.
“Alright, Nda Ego. Ka chi foo”. She said.

Oestrogentots:
I am convinced that being a woman in Africa is a curse, living your life not for yourself but for the rules and regulations that you ought to follow to get validation most definitely is.

I want to be able to buy a car while single without being questioned, judged, hushed or perceived as a runs girl.

I really want to club with my female friends alone and not have any man come over to our table.

I certainly want to have multiple sexual partners for pleasure without being termed a slut!

Oh how I love to have great sex without strings without being termed a wierdo.

I would love to have domestic help without being called a bad wife.

I most definitely would want to get birth control without being called an ashewo.

I would want to own my sexuality and bask in the pleasure of my orgasms irrespective of it being gotten from sex or a intimacy gadget.

Why am I so frowned at by wanting the above?

Maybe having a vagina is a curse that makes one less human... Just maybe, I wouldn't know but you might.
I might not know because I don't have a vagina.

EPISODE 10

"I don't know but I guess they have their reasons. I would not have had it the other way round. How would life feel with you in this state? Mma, you must promise me you would get married and give birth to those numbers of children we agreed upon".
Nnenne cried deeply as waved her head from left to right declining to promise.
"Mma, you have to promise me". He pleaded as he began coughing. She hurriedly stood up to attend to him. "Mma, you must promise me" he said squeezing her hand and staring straight into her soul.
"Alright Nna, I promise" she said just to please him. "I promise Nwoke oma, I promise" she broke down crying again.
"Don't cry my love, this is not the end. They have not won, we shall meet again. I promise to return to you".
"Stay alive and you will not have to return".
From outside came the booming voice of his father, "So you people allow that foolish girl that has brought this calamity upon this household to enter my house?" The voice seems to be coming from a distance. Hearing this, he pulled her closer and whispered "Remember, it is me and you against the world till the end".
Ogadimma jumped in, informing her that her father was fast approaching, so it is time to go. "Come let's go before that man catches you here!" she said pulling her toward the dwarf door.
"I can't leave him behind to die!" she said trying to escape from her grip.
"Mma, get away from here. Go and live your life. This is not the end I promise".
"Forever?" Nnenne asked just before Ogadimma succeeded in pulling her out from the hut.
"Yes, forever. Till the very end" he responded faintly. Those were the same words Amuwa whispered into her ears when she carried him.

EPISODE 9

All that changed immediately she saw the welcoming smile he flashed her, love still sparkled in his eyes and quickly the doubts in heart died away as it became clear it was her lover. Nnenne broke down crying and screaming as uncontrollably tears rolled down her cheeks. She slowly crawled to his bed side, shouting in broken words "Nwosu! Who did this to you? What happened? Talk to me Nna! Tell me, who made you like this?"
"Mma, it is alright. Please stop crying" he whispered in pain.
Waving her head from left to right, "It is not alright. Who did this to you?"
"Stop crying and i will tell you". Nnenne quickly wiped the dripping tears off her cheeks.
"I woke up in the mid night to find myself like this and in so much pain. When the dibia came, he said it is punishment for having a sexual relationship with you" he said struggling to catch his breath.
Nnenne sat down on the floor devastated as her taste for life extinguished. Her whole world was crumbing right in front of her and all she could do was staring blankly. She had always knew deep down that the fight against the gods and tradition of the land was one she and her lover would never win but never foretold it ending this tragically. "So what are we going to do?" she thought aloud.
"Nothing, Mma!” The dibia said nothing can be done. We angered the gods and this is their punishment. He even avoided touching me in order not to partake in my odium".
"So nothing can be done to save you? What kind of life is this? How can we sit here and watch you die?" she asked as the tears returned.
"There is something you can do. Forget about me and move on with your life". On hearing this, she screamed and cried more, asking "Who is going to marry me Nna? What is life without you? Why will only you suffer for a crime we both committed?"

A two part short story.......

Part 1 of 2

Half a pound of tuppenny rice,
Half a pound of treacle.
That’s the way the money goes,
Pop! goes the weasel.

The little child giggled when her jack in the box popped out, it's head bobbing forward and backward as she clapped in appreciation

“I love it mom, thank you” she cooed, her face as wide as saucers in excitement. Her mother seeing the joy in her little girl's face smiled knowing how much it meant to her child .

“You're welcome sweetie” the mother replied, placing a tender kiss on her child's head who went back to playing with her toy as she went about setting aside the grocery bag she was carrying on the kitchen counter and began offloading it's content, contemplating what would be suitable for dinner before a question came to her mind and she raised her head up to see her daughter transfixed with her new toy which seemed squarely odd for a five year old

“Anna?” she called, and the little angel looked up from her toy beaming as she looked up to her mother

“Yes mom?”

“why jack in the box? I could have gotten you a barbie”

“No mom, Jenny said I should get a jack in the box” the little girl smiled before looking back down to her toy

“Jenny? Who's Jenny?” mother asked frowning a bit as she had never heard of a Jenny from her daughter

“My new friend. Can't wait to show it to her ” Anna replied, before jumping off the kitchen stool and sauntered towards her room in pure ecstasy, living alone her smiling mother who shook her head. And to think just a little toy can make her little girl that happy. She snapped her middle and thumb fingers as she finally decided what she wanted to make for dinner.

Half a pound of tuppenny rice,
Half a pound of treacle.
That’s the way the money goes,
Pop! goes the weasel.

Mother stirred in her bed, her eyes fluttering as the song from the jack in the box echoed faintly in the dark before waking up fully. Flicking the bedside light on, she turned to her side seeing her husband sleeping peacefully, seemingly unaffected whatsoever, light snores escaping his nostrils and then to the the bed side clock which had the numbers 11:20 boldly shown.

With a sigh, she turned to arrange the covers over his sprawled out frame before flicking the light off deciding to go back to sleep when the song came up once more followed by giggles and her little girl's voice been heard.

Heaving off the bed, she hugged her nightdress over her frame as she walked across the room, gently opening the door and made her way out towards her little girl's room.

She stopped right in front of the door when she saw the light peeking from the underneath the door

“Anna?” she knocked and soon the giggling stopped but there was no reply.

“Anna? You awake, she knocked once more before opening up to see her little girl sitted on the ground, her jack in the box in front of her.

“Sweetie? What are you doing up?” the mother queried walking up to her daughter who just kept mute, staring down at her toy.

“Jenny likes it too” she finally looked up away from jack to her perplexed mother.

“Jenny?” her mum's head craned to the side in wonder.

“Yes” Anna nodded getting up from the ground as she climbed unto her bed.
“Good night mom” Anna smiled, closing in her eyes in sleep.

“Goodnight, her mother finally blinked away her blank state . She moved closer, bringing up the blanket over her daughter's frame, placed a lingering kiss on her forward.

Raising up, she turned around, picked up the jack placing it by the side before heading towards the door, flicked off the light and closed the door after her as she walked towards her room with one thought alone in her mind.
Who's Jenny?

The door creaked open, and there was a low murmur

Mother thought she heard something as she rose half awake on the bed, resting her elbows on the bed for support as she looked wearily at the door

“Anna?” she called when she saw a small frame standing afar off, not moving but there was no reply

“Anna” she called once more heaving of the bed with a little difficulty as she stood upright, her gaze turning back towards the door, but there was nothing there. She could have sworn she saw her daughter, she sighed turning to go lay back down when she nearly stumbled, doing a double take as her breath got caught in her throat in shock as she inhaled swiftly, her hand flying to her chest as she tried to steady herself

“Anna? What are you doing here?” mother asked, her hand dropping from her chest to her side but there wasn't any reply

“Anna?” mother moved to touch her but stopped when the little girl moved away from her touch, her tiny voice sounding out quietly

“Jenny is angry mom”

Confused, mother asked on impulse what's been bothering her since from earlier

“Who's Jenny sweetie?”

“My friend, and she's angry” came little Anna's reply

“How do you know she's angry?”

“She told me”

“When?”

“Few minutes ago”

“how?”

“She woke me up and told me”

Mother sighed when she realised her daughter could've been dreaming, but Anna remained adamant

“Okay, so why is Jenny angry?” mother asked wearily stifling a yawn feeling the sleep coming up

“She want to play with him too”

“him? Who?” mother asked wondering what her daughter was talking about

“Him” Anna said pointing to her mother's potruded belly which was eight months gone.......

Ogadimma at first never liked Nnenne, she felt threatened by her, she thought Nnenne wanted to come in between her and her brother but later she discovered their love was genuine and she was the only thing that brought joy to his once lonely brother. She become the only person in the world that was in support of their relationship and currently her only friend as the rest had deserted her in order not to share in her maledict.
She asked about her lover and why he was not there yet? Ogadimma responded promising that Nwosu was alright but that something unexpected came up, that's why he could not make it and has asked her to come instead. She trusted Ogadimma and was curious what unexpected thing came up, so she followed.
They arrived the compound to find people gathered in small groups, whispering to each other and wearing long faces. Once they saw her, they stopped talking and began staring at her as she slowly walked passed them into the hut that Ogadimma pointed after she said "Go inside and see for yourself".
She got in to find the hut void of life and moody like the faces outside. The presence of death was evident in the atmosphere. Strong smell of rotten flesh filled the hut. She held her breathe to prevent her from throwing up. It was dark inside as the center fire was also out. On the bamboo bed lay a swollen man, his skin shinning to reflect the little light left. On his swollen skin were big reddish sores. An oily substance was applied on his skin. He was covered with a wrapper to chest level. "This must be a punishment from the gods" she thought. "This person looks nothing like my Nwosu, but then who is this and why is she asked to visit him?" she wondered.

EPISODE 7

Her father kept warming her to stay away from Nwosu; that he was bad news and nothing more; that their love will bring nothing but calamity upon their noble family. He even went a step further to threaten that he would disown her if she continued seeing that osu; all of these fell on ears covered with the beautiful music of love. Nwosu's parents were no different; they too wanted nothing to do with dialas to avoid the wrath of the gods upon their household. They also warned their son asking him to abandon Nnenne and look for an Osu like himself and get married to but as expected he didn't listen.
About twenty Igbo weeks after, these two have become inseparable with thoughts that they are invisible to the rest of the world, it became clear they were not when Nnenne's father went to attack Nwosu's family in search of him with a machete. The lovers met in their secret hide out the next day and decided to make love for the first time to further prove to the world and the gods that nothing is going to come in between them. After the gratifying action, they agreed to elope to another far away village with no diala and osu, where everyone is free to get married to whoever they love. There they agreed to meet at the same spot the next morning before the sun rises, from where they will begin their journey to the promise land.
Nnenne left him that evening after a heartfelt goodbye, all smiles and extremely excited. Her dreams were about to become a reality. She has been suggesting they run away but he refused saying he doesn't want to leave Ogadimma behind as she declined running with them. But that attack on his family changed everything. He had just made her the happiest woman in the world.
She got home that evening and quickly did everything that was expected of her. While in her room, she hurriedly packed all her belongings and lay on her mat forcing herself to sleep. After the second cock crow, she sneaked from home not minding the danger that could lie ahead as it was not yet dawn to their hideout, waiting for her lover to show up but he never did. Instead Ogadimma came to inform her of a change in plan, that Nwosu wants her to come to their house first.

EPISODE 6

"Long time ago, when our grandmother Nnenne was still young, wild and beautiful. One beautiful day, she was returning from the stream, when suddenly a stranger jumped out from the bush and startled her; her clay pot fell and broke. Nnenne quick to anger didn't wait to hear from the innocent man, she landed him a dirty slap. Which she quickly regretted because you can't slap a man for any reason and walk away without him returning the favor to avoid been a laughing stock to his age mates. The young man with his palm gently romancing the affected cheek, forced the most beautiful smile Nnenne said she had seen and apologized for his wrong; promising to follow her home and explained what transpired between them to her parents.
True to his words, the stranger did exactly as he said though the journey home was a quiet and eerie one. When they got to her father's house, he apologized and was forgiven by her parents and left after bidden her goodbye. Once he was gone, her father warmed her never to go near him again as he was an Osu.
That night as Nnenne lay on her mat, she thought of all that has happened that evening and was filled with regret and remorse. Why did she slap him? He didn't deserve that slap, why was she always quick to anger. Osus are usually not kind to Dialas, why didn't he return the slap? Why was he kind to me? She wondered before making up her mind to ask for his forgiveness next she sees him.
Eight days after, Nnenne was returning from the stream when she saw him approaching from a far, holding hand with another girl about her own age. Immediately he saw her, he excused the maiden and slowly walked over wearing a beautiful smile. Nnenne said the smile made her heart skip a beat. She wasted no time in apologizing for her wrong the last time they met. He introduced himself as Nwosu and the girl as Ogadimma, his younger sister. Adding that she was the one he wanted to startle as she claimed not to be afraid of anything.
They spent so much time getting to know each other as every other thing faded in the background, their social classes disappeared into tiny air; it didn't matter whether they were from different worlds, everything seem to be perfect. After all, true love doesn't care about Osu and Diala. That was how Nnenne and Nwosu love story began; they began seeing each other in odd places at odd times, hiding from the rest of the world. They were not really good at hiding it because soon it was no longer news that they were seeing each other.
