Recently I was at a relative’s naming ceremony overseas where there were Yorubas, other Nigerians, and non- Nigerians. Every now and then, an elderly relative, the baby’s grandmother, would walk around greeting and appreciating the guests for their presence. It became obvious the guests were amazed by such unusual act of courtesy. My elderly relative, perceiving their curiosity, turned to the guests and remarked, “You might wonder why I keep greeting you since you’ve been here, it is the Yoruba culture to regard guests during a ceremony or an event. In fact, the Yorubas have a salutation for every encounter or experience in life.” The sparkle in the guests’ eyes signaled that they desired to know more of such charming etiquette. This experience reminded me of a book that I had read sometime ago about an American gentleman who lived in Yorubaland between 1859 and 1860, he wrote of his experience: “There are not a more affable (pleasant) people found anywhere than are the Akus (Yorubas). Not even Frenchmen are more thorough in their attention to politeness than the Akus. Two persons, even strangers, hardly ever pass each other without exchanging salutations…” The Yorubas have an appropriate salutation for every occasion, for instance: Aku aaro (good morning); aku ale (good evening); Aku ise (for being industrious); Aku abo (for returning from a journey or an outing); Aku ile (greeting someone who has been at home); Aku atijo (long time, no see); Aku ijoko (for sitting down); Aku iduro (for standing); Aku iroju (for expressing sympathy); Aku eru (for carrying a load or bearing a burden); Aku alejo (for entertaining a visitor or a stranger); Aku inawo (for being generous); Aku oriire (congratulation s); Aku faaji (for relaxation); Aku odun (for festivity); Aku aajo (appreciation to someone showing sympathy); Aku otutu (for cold weather); Aku ooru (for heat); Aku idele (greeting a family whose member is on a sojourn). So rich is Yoruba’s style of greetings that it goes indefinitely and this explains why the Yorubas, home and overseas, were historically known as the Akus. Aku igba yi o. SSCE.. We were writing Chemistry nd the supervisor never talked to us for any reason.. Then, my school's exam officer offered him the usual softdrinks we give to our invigilators.. After a while, this man left the hall with his drink at hand. He went under a tree which is about 150meters from the hall.. He sat there, sipping his drinks 4 at least 20mins. We were relieved in d hall nd we did whateva we wanted.. So this girl came to my seat (I was always d only 1 on my seat), she began disturbing me 2 help her with answers [Oh, I was d HeadBoy], although I hadn't written anything to a reasonable length.. I kept quite, not paying attention to her, and busy looking at the supervisor far away (my seat was just by the window)... Sudenly, a strong wind came from nowhere and directly towards the tree where d supervisor was.. The wind carried different sorts of dirts, papers, etc. The supervisor had a nice bath as I saw him covering his face with one hand, and his drink with the other.. I never made good use of that opportunity though. |

United States President,Barrack Obama, on Wednesday, commended President Goodluck Jonathan and the President-elect, Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), for their public commitments to non-violence during their campaigns. Obama, in a statement said President Jonathan placed Nigeria’s interests first by conceding defeat while congratulating Buhari on his victory. “I look forward to working with President Jonathan throughout the remainder of his term, and I thank him for his many years of service and his statesmanlike conduct at this critical juncture. I urge President-elect Buhari and President Jonathan to repeat their calls to their supporters to continue to respect the election outcomes, focus on unifying the country, and together lead Nigeria through a peaceful transition,”Obama stated. The US President also commended the large turnout of voters, saying this shows the strength of Nigeria’s commitment to democratic principles. Obama also called for a special honour for the Independent National Electoral Commission and its Chairman, Attahiru Jega. According to him, the electoral body and Jega deserve special recognition for the largely peaceful and orderly election. The statement read, “I commend INEC for its extensive efforts to increase the credibility and transparency of the electoral process. Looking ahead to the governorship elections on April 11, it is imperative that national attention turn to ensuring isolated logistical challenges are overcome and peace is protected, even in the most hotly contested races. ” On behalf of the American people, I extend congratulations to the people of Nigeria and to President-Elect Buhari and look forward to continuing to work with the newly-elected government on our many shared priorities.” |

Ogun - A university lecturer, Dr Olusegun Peleyeju, on Monday urged the Federal Government and stakeholders in education sector to invest more in the sector, to fast-track development in the country. Peleyeju, a Senior Lecturer, Department of Education and Management, Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijebu- Ode, stated that much still needed to be done in this sector. The don, however, lauded the standard of education in Nigeria, in spite of the challenges being faced in the sector. He said that for the nation to compete favourably in the future, education advancement remained paramount. "While government is focusing on providing an enabling environment and the required infrastructure, our teachers too must utilise capacity building opportunities and build themselves,” he said. Peleyeju urged unemployed graduates to engage themselves productively even though white-collar jobs were scarce and not forthcoming. He urged students to make the best use of information technology for productive means, rather than just for amusement sake. "It is not wrong to browse the internet but when you do that, do so appropriately. There must not be misplacement of priority. "Spend more time trying to garner useful information while using the internet rather than chatting or playing games. "Advancement in information technology is supposed to be a plus and not a hindrance,” Peleyeju said. The lecturer said a sound education was required as one of the qualities a good political leader must possess. According to him, “Training is synonymous with leadership, as there are certain basic skills a leader is expected to have." |
