History of Oke Esa Compound in Egosi Ile

Egosi Ile is a historic town located in the Oke Ero Local Government Area of Kwara State. It forms part of a wider cultural region that includes notable communities such as Iloffa and Imode Ayedun. To fully understand the Egosi Ile Kingdom, one must appreciate the various compounds that contribute to its identity — and Oke Esa is one of the most significant among them.

This historical account of the Oke Esa Compound is narrated by a respected descendant of the Areyin family,
HIGH CHIEF ODOFIN ADETONA OF EGOSI KINGDOM.

A Glimpse Into the Past

“I clearly remember the days when there were no medical facilities. Whenever any of us fell sick in the compound, our mothers would take us to the Baobab tree behind our homes. They went with simple local foods such as coconut, groundnuts, grated maize cake (Ekute), red oil bean cake, white bean cake (Ekuru), and sugarcane cut into small pieces.

There, children from the Oke Esa Compound gathered as the oldest mother in the compound, along with the afflicted child’s mother, offered prayers for healing and recovery. Miraculously, the children would often regain their health shortly after.”

Another important practice of that era was the annual appeasement of a sacred tree by the great-great-grandfathers of the compound, performed at their first ancestral settlement after migrating from Oke Esa in Omu-Aran.

The Journey From Omu-Aran

Oral tradition reveals that the first great-great-grandfather of the Oke Esa lineage settled in a dense forest known as Oke Ilaro. This forest was inhabited by a renowned hunter — a brave and highly skilled man deeply knowledgeable in native charms. Their meeting marked the beginning of a strong brotherhood.

Both men, known as exceptional hunters, formed a bond built on bravery and mutual respect. This friendship grew so strong that the hunter of Oke Ilaro ceded a large expanse of land to our pioneering ancestor for permanent settlement and farming. He also granted him the honor of naming the new settlement after his ancestral compound in Omu-Aran.

This is why, to this day, the settlement is known as Ile Oke Esa.

The Oke Esa Compound in Egosi continues to maintain its sacred relationship with its ancestral root in Omu-Aran. The ancient settlement, located deep within the forest, remains blessed with fertile soil, supporting abundant harvests of both cash crops and food crops.

Formation of the Egosi Community

As the population grew, several settlements emerged, each occupying different locations. These included:

Oke Ilaro, Oko Orun, Ile Ajiso, Ile Okankan, Oke Orisa, Ile Elegosi, Ile Ogbonja, Ile Olu, Ile Aofin, Ilegun, Oke Epe, and Ile Abisi — making a total of thirteen foundational compounds in Egosi.

However, due to the frequent intertribal wars of that era, the scattered settlements eventually decided to unite for collective strength and protection. This unity marked the beginning of a stronger, more consolidated Egosi community.

The full history of how Egosi once operated under Iloffa — and the events that led to its return to its ancestral homeland — will be shared in the next chapter.

Although shining differently

And then I freely chose to align
With The GIVER of lights!

I got adopted, cleansed, rerobed
Given access into the house of mercy
I became, #Child!
A Princess of The Almighty

The little light kept glowing o
Till it became a bright light
And it keeps getting brighter
As I go better and wiser
Showing me such miraculous wonders

Now, the little light shines
More than it would ordinarily have
Differently it shines
But evident it's from The Lighter of lights!

As I hear it told of my little light, stories of souls awakened abound!
As I get to know of my little light, recounts of minds transformed a-many!
This, my best life achievement!

Lives have been changed
Light is shining
Lighting the souls of many
Just because of my little light I dared to shine!
This, my highest accomplishments!

I see the wonders, oh I do,
And I'm GRATEFUL for these wonders
Which are wrought by The FATHER
Through my little light I dared to shine
