Egosi Town is an ancient kingdom located in the Oke Ero Local Government Area of Kwara State. The community has existed since the era of inter-communal wars among tribes and ethnic groups in what is now Nigeria.

According to oral history, during one of these turbulent periods, three kingdoms—Ilofa, Egosi, and Imode—decided to unite in order to strengthen their defense and form a formidable alliance. They left their original territories and relocated closer to one another. It is said that each kingdom brought a small quantity of soil from their homeland and mixed them together as a symbolic covenant of unity. The gesture also ensured that their individual identities became inseparable.


This bond allowed them to jointly defend their territories, share resources, and undertake communal development projects. Their languages became so closely related that outsiders often could not distinguish them. They also shared similar cultural practices and belief systems.

However, sometime in the 1990s (exact date uncertain), disputes—particularly over land and other related matters—arose among the three communities. To preserve peace, Ilofa, Imode, and Egosi mutually agreed to separate and retain their independence.

This marked the beginning of what is now known as Egosi Ile. The people of Egosi seized the opportunity to reclaim and develop their abandoned ancestral lands. They established modern schools, a hospital, a new palace, residential settlements, and even one of the notable banks in Africa, alongside other essential amenities.

Today, EGOSI ILE stands as one of the fastest-growing communities in Oke Ero Local Government Area.

The community now distinguishes between Egosi Ile (the new settlement) and Egosi Oja (the old settlement).
“Ile” means home, while “Oja” means market. These names beautifully capture the kingdom’s cultural identity and historical depth.


Egosi Oja remains inhabited by descendants of the Egosi Kingdom. It holds deep historical significance and symbolizes their ancient heritage—an integral part of their identity that they strive to preserve.

The Egosi Kingdom shares boundaries with Ilofa, Imode, Ayedun, and possibly Omu-Aran.

Over the years, the community has independently championed various development projects, elevating its status within Oke-Ero LGA and surpassing neighboring communities in growth and infrastructural advancement.

Traditional Egosi cuisine includes cherished dishes such as Ekuru, Eka, Iyan, and several other delicacies.


The kingdom is made up of numerous compounds, including Oke-Aro, Oke-Esa, Ele-Abisi, Okorun, Ile-Ogbonja, among others. Remarkably, each compound contributes financially and materially every year to support community development—significantly reducing reliance on government assistance.

In addition to these compounds, Egosi Ile is also home to many educated indigenes and organized bodies like the Egbe Akurubebe, as well as numerous influential community stakeholders who play key roles in driving progress.

Egosi Community is religiously diverse, with practitioners of traditional religion, Christianity, and Islam peacefully coexisting and practicing their beliefs without conflict.
