Politics › Tension As The Race For Ooni Splits Ruling Houses by Allosaurus(op): 6:23pm On Aug 25, 2015 |
Race for the next Ooni of Ife after the demise of the former occupier, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, is generating heat as two ruling houses are set to clash over who will produce the new king.
Following the demise of Oba Sijuwade, who is from the Ogboru rulling, his successor was restricted to the Giesi family.
This is so, according to the succession order established by government declaration on the Ooni chieftaincy title of 1977. But the Ogboru royal family is also contesting for the position.
The Ogboru family said the agreement entered between the Giesi royal house and the late Ooni is a done on a personal ground and is not binding to the family, Premium Times reports.
This new development has thrown confusion in the ancient town as the selection of the new Ooni would not be without fisticuffs.
On the other hand, Giesi Ruling House is insisting it is its turn to produce the next Ooni to succeed late Oba Sijuwade.
The princes of the Giesi ruling house in a press conference, Adelowo Ogunleye, Moses Awogbade and Ropo Ogunwusi said that their clan would produce the next king of Ife.
The spokesperson of the Giesi ruling house, Ogunleye, said that it was the turn of the ruling house based on the government declaration on the Ooni chieftaincy title in 1977.
He explained that the memorandum was issued in Oyo state government in September 16, 1980.
Giesi statement read in part: “We want to seize this opportunity to tell the whole world especially the people of Ile-Ife and government of the State of Osun, ably headed by our amiable and indefatigable governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, that the normal rotation to the succession to the throne of Ooni which is in vogue in Ile-Ife presently, has ascertained the fact that it is now the turn of Giesi Ruling House Moore Ile Ife to produce the next Ooni of Ife by the special grace of God almighty.
“It is on record as indicated by the government declaration captioned ‘ The Ooni of Ife Chieftaincy Declaration’ reference no CB141/7/1/540 dated 22nd August, 1977 addressed to the then Executive Secretary of Oranmiyan Local Government Ile-Ife from the office of Military Governor of Oyo State of Nigeria and duly signed by the then Secretary to the Military Government and Head of Service.”
He further stated that Paragraph A of the letter stated that the order of rotation among the ruling houses should be as follows: “( 1) Osinkola (2) Ogboru (3) Giesi (4) Lafogido.
“We want all and sundry to please note that the Osinkola House produced our father Oba Adesoji Aderemi who ruled for 50 years in Ile-Ife and was immediately succeeded by Oba Okunade Sijuwade from Ogboru House who has just transited.
“It then follows that the next ruling house to produce the next Ooni of Ife should automatically and normally come from Giesi Ruling House as the government approved rotational arrangements.” https://www.naij.com/529731-royal-ruling-houses-lock-horn-new-ooni-ife.html

Politics › How Much Senators, Reps Receive For Their Recess by Allosaurus(op): 3:11pm On Aug 25, 2015 |
Members of the Senate and House of Representatives have received a huge allowance for the 6 weeks recess from August 13.
Daily Trust reports that senators, reps have been paid N93million.
It should be noted that the National Assembly members had boarded on the vacation after 14 days of session without any discussion.
They are to resume sitting on September 29.
The payment is apparently 10 % of the yearly basic salary of the lawmakers as specified in the remuneration package for political, public and judicial office holders in Nigeria by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.
Differently to the three other vacations that they have embarked upon, the ongoing recess is their legal annual holiday.
The report also notes that the National Assembly members have been paid their accommodation allowance as well as what is labeled 28 days allowance.
It would be recalled that before going on recess, the legislators had stormy session over the move by the Senate leaders to reduce their salaries and allowances after the slash down of the yearly budget of the National Assembly from N150bn to N120bn. https://www.naij.com/529507-stunning-figures-much-senators-reps-receive-recess.html |

Politics › Why Lebanese Terrorist, Al-assir Got Visa - Ministry by Allosaurus(op): 9:36am On Aug 25, 2015 |
Ministry of Foreign Affairs has revealed why Nigeria issued an entry visa into the country to Ahmad Al-Assir, Lebanese Sunni Muslim extremist, who was arrested last week.
An official told Premium Times that Al-Assir got entry permission because Nigeria’s embassies do not take applicants’ biometric data.
Biometrics cover a diversity of unique identifiable attributes of people comprising fingerprint, iris print, hand, face, voice, gait or signatures, are used for proof of identity and verification.
The source, who wanted not to be named, said with the surge of security breaks and religious fundamentalism, biometric taking has become a standard yet, Nigeria, ongoing fighting Boko Haram terrorism, has failed to apply the technology.
He said: “While the measure tends to pre-empt influx of terrorists instead they (sic) depend on the use of stop list for potential visa applicants.”
“If we have a bank for storing the number of personal data which should be distributed to all our embassies; the prevailing spate of insecurity in the globe which has gone beyond just the antiquated stop list method would be checkmated.”
The foreign affairs official disclosed that the obsolete list which Nigerian embassies rely on are not even supported with photographs or fingerprints.
He said Nigerian consular officers do not adequately checked the background on all visa requirements as no applicant appears for oral interview with visas even issued in applicant’s absence.
The source questioned why visa applications go through a third party state passport and why Nigerian embassies seldom validate addresses and telephone number(s) of the person inviting the visa applicant.
He supposed that the federal government take steps to stop the policy of the issuance of visa within 48 hours and make room for efficiency through technology.
On his own part, Bulus Lolo, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that he has personally started his own probe into the matter. He said the terrorist might have operated under a virtual name.
It should be recalled that Al-Assir was detained on August 15, after he was taken trying to find his way into Nigeria through Cairo, Egypt, with a fake Palestinian passport and a legal Nigerian visa at the Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport in Lebanon.
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has demanded a probe into how the wanted terrorist was able to receive valid entry permission. https://www.naij.com/528854-ministry-revealed-lebanese-terrorist-al-assir-got-nigerian-visa.html |

Politics › Why I Won't Support Bala Mohammed - Fayose by Allosaurus(op): 8:30am On Aug 25, 2015 |
Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose, has expressed his support for the acting chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, as the next chairman of the party telling those vying for the same position to suspend their ambitions for now.
Fayose disclosed this on Sunday, August 23, after meeting with the former minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Bala Mohammed, behind closed doors.
Mohammed who is currently lobbying for the support of the leaders of the party to emerge as the next chairman of the party, visited Fayose at his Osuntokun Lodge in Ado Ekiti, in company of Liya Damagon and former Special Adviser on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak.
According to Premium Times, the former FCT minister said his coming was “just paying a private visit” to the Ekiti state governor and that he would not like to disclose the details of the meeting to journalists .
However, he admitted that he had intentions to contest for the chairmanship of PDP, adding that his ambition was no longer secret.
According to Mohammed, he said his move was a sincere effort to contribute to the party and rebuild it ahead of 2019 general elections.
However Fayose has rejected any attempt to replace the present caretaker committee headed by Secondus in the immediate future. He said: “It is a normal thing to have ambition. It’s a good development but in my opinion, I think the party needs the caretaker committee now rather than a substantive chairman.”
“Secondly, we need somebody who could take his time and use this interregnum and put the party into proper position. We do not need somebody who is trying to just finish the tenure of a former leader.
So, to me, there isn’t much that a substantive chairman can do in just five months now,” he added.
He admitted that the party was undergoing a challenging period and would need the caretaker committee to run the party for a while and hold elections later for party executives. He also advised that members should go back to their base and do the needful at the grassroots.
Meanwhile Emma Agu, the publisher of Zest Traveller Magazine has said that Bala Mohammed fits into the leadership profile that can set the party on the right track considering his years as a top civil servant and politician with bankable political capital. https://www.naij.com/528700-fayose-reveals-cant-support-bala-mohammed-become-pdp-chairman.html

safarigirl: the Igbos are more tribalistic?
You can not exonerate your own people from tribalism. I have grown up in Lagos and Abuja and most de-tribalised Yoruba people are those from Ogun and Lagos. Even supposedlly educated/exposed Yorubas are bigots
The Oba that vowed a genocide against a people was not Igbo, all the jobless mofos that gatered in Lagos to protest and ask Igbos to leave their imaginary land are not Igbos, the guy on twitter that declared all Igbo should be killed during the INEC Collation exercise was not Igbo, FFK that wrote an article to insult Igbos was not Igbo, tell me ONE tribal thing ANY Igbo man has done to the Yoruba race in comparison to these examples I've given against Igbos...then you'll justify why they should not feel marginalised.
Nigeria is a country filled with sick hypocrites and Nairaland is giving them a voice There u go, sweetie but I'd advise you don't involve urself in this unending bigotry rooted on Nairaland. Most anti-Igbos here are natural cowards in their real life. Endeavour to ignore such threads next time |
