Elmuktari: You're teaching in a Southwestern state, I guess! Things like these are common over there except in some of their Muslim schools. Pls let's not bring southwest or east, north into this conversation please. This occurrence in private schools isn't only peculiar to a specific region. It's everywhere |

V3li: Reading this I felt like you am were telling my story, if not for lack of jobs I will advice all living humans NEVER to apply for teaching in a private school, I thought in a private school and my experience is almost the same as yours, I was made the coordinator or my block which is the senior block, with no extra pay but bulky work, if a teacher doesn't come to school and didn't notify the proprietaress, she will blame me, if she comes and am not going round to make sure things are in order in the block I will be blamed, the same me have to be in a class teaching, the same me have books to mark, the same me must give assignments, the same me was teaching from nursery 3 to jss 1, 3 subjects each. I mean nursery 3 History and current affair, religious studies and cultural and creative act from nursery 3 to Jss 1. I go to the school as a coordinator before 7am I close 4pm sometimes 6pm. Some days I go home with sack filled with books just to go and mark. Some weekends we are made to come to school for one activity or the other. It got to a point I will sit down and be hearing my name or seeing blurry because of stress, dey said the will pay 30k but staying in the school from 7 to 4 you will definitely be hungry, if you eat from the school kitchen 500 per plate it will be written down, at the end of the month it will be deducted from your salary, sometimes you end up collecting a very dirty amount as salary after several deductions. I didn't have anyone or any job but when I felt that school I didn't look back at all, and is one of the best decisions I have made in my life. Private schools use teachers to the core. You're right. It's a very sad situation we have found ourselves. |

Zackattack: This man, you complain too much. If you’ve taught in private schools that long, you definitely must have seen it all. These things happen in most private schools. The only issue I see here is you using your own credit to contact parents when their child is absent. This people are paying your salaries promptly, take solace in that. Please if u lack what to say, then keep quiet. Of all the things I posted, that's the only thing u saw to react to? |

https://www.nairaland.com/8262092/why-private-schools-likeFellow Nairalanders, I greet you all. This post is in reaction to my earlier Post. I would have chosen to remain perpetually and eternally silent on this matter, but in order to set the records straight, I have decided to let us know a few things I consider pertinent and Germane, and which were not clearly stated in my previous post. God will judge every of our deeds whether good or bad. Whatever we do to this children will be judged accordingly. A day of reckoning is coming. We'll all give account of our stewardship. I don't expect every commenter to agree with me, but the truth will always prevail. Last year, I attempted to leave the job due to a particular parent who tries to bully me for no good reason and since I noticed the sch wasn't willing to call her to order, I told my boss I was leaving, he had to plead and plead and also sent a close colleague to plead with me. Out of my respect for him I returned to work. On the issue of sending a child to get his scores: Of course students are at liberty to ask teachers for their scores. We all know how curious our learners are, and even without being told they are always eager to know their scores in all subjects. However it depends on how serious the student is. Some don't care! There's actually nothing wrong in sending a student to do this as far as the school is concerned. But if this is generally wrong, then I will never do so again. And I will inform my colleagues not to do so. On my Love and passion for Teaching: My passion for this job is almost unmatched. I'm not trying to blow my trumpet. I am so so dedicated and committed to this job. If I wasn't a passionate about this job, I wouldn't even go into it in the first place talk less of teaching in nine different sch in the last few years. As a matter of fact, I have won Best Teacher award for two consecutive times in this current sch. I am well loved by my students and the Proprietor of the sch. Some of the things I own today were given me by my students on my birthday. A few parents love and esteem me very highly due to my commitment. At every point in time, I'm always suggesting ways we can improve as an organization. My proprietor rates me so high and it gives me so much joy. He believes in me. And I'm eager to do even more. My challenge is his wife who oversees the sch cos her husband is a federal worker who goes to the office leaving his wife as the major administrator of the sch. I've been in this sch for almost three years. On the picture: I didn't put the school's pictures on my post. It was the Admins who put the random pictures of a sch there, that's not the image of my sch. I wouldn't do such. Why? Discipline: What is education without discipline? No matter how intelligent you are, if u lack discipline, u don't have a future. Discipline encompasses a lot, it's not about flogging. There are several ways to discipline a child. I will never torment a child emotionally, mentally or psychologically. I won't inflict any bodily harm on him/her. I have always believed that the target of anything in life should be to do it so well, so that it becomes an Art. No sensible teacher would hate his students. Why? Are we competing for anything in life? My sch is a business centre and do not want to displease their clients(parents). They do whatever pleases the parents and children even when it is against education policy. Today is Saturday, but I'm on my way to sch to have a class with SS1. I'm the only staff doing this . |

WINDSOW: Flash the parent and they will call. Or place a WhatsApp call.
For the disciplinary aspect, follow the school-owner's directive and try to catch his words by recording it.
Also work smart to own your school or improve yourself to becoming a lecturer. Teaching job in Nigeria is sorry.
Wish you well Thank you Sir |

atheistandproud: @Allotrope69 from an ex teacher to you
I have experienced everything you are going through and more. I have taught from primary school to tertiary level. I still gladly teach or volunteer to do so when the opportunity arises but never in the formal private school setting. I have seen shege. From Finisher's where they wanted to finish us to Unique where they were uniquely wicked.
I have seen management try to set up teachers against each other. Should I talk about the overwork or the withholding of salaries, over pampering of kids or the worship of parents?
The last straw for me was a matter that I had no clue about, but yet got a query for. As soon as I was cleared of all wrongdoing, I simply quit and left two months of salary with them in November of 2018.
I do very okay for myself as a Social Media Manager, Content Creator, YouTuber and Virtual Assistant.
Also, you should note when someone who has never taught before is speaking and learn to ignore them so that they'll wilt. Nairaland is a toxic hovel. There's many frustrated people who lack contact from other humans and are looking to take out their frustrations on you. They are only here to harass you. Ignore them. If you can, pick up something else as someone has advised and start making your moves or in 10 years you'll hate yourself. Time moves quickly.
Cheers 🥂 Thanks so much Sir. I appreciate u sincerely. God bless you 🙏 |

mhiztaNexy: Please leave the school if you can, op. Don't have a hand in a generation that will curse you later. Call the school owners out and inform ministry of educations for proper investigations, they usually love scapegoats or will milk the school owners till they sit up and do the right thing. Social media is the new sophisticated weapon these days, use it. You can even stay anonymous and deal with the rubbish school.

thatigboman: Op, I have not read the rest of your story, but on the part of you telling the child to round the teachers and collect his scripts is totally wrong. The proprietress is wright on that. A pupil is not the one that will go round and collect his scripts, more so, a poor performing pupil. What if collects them and alter them? Or even burn them completely? Even in universities, u sit for courses that are across several departments and faculties, u dont go to anyone to collect your script and submit to your department. When results come out, just go to department's board and check your scores. It's not scripts sir. It's for the students to know his scores. He will be told his scores verbally. That's all |

dkidd: There are other more serious punishment than flogging. How about suspension for a week or two which will reflect in his term results and a meeting or call to the parents as to why their child has been suspended. There are ways about this. Humans are corrected better without flogging like an animal which in time will be nothing because they have built resistance to it The sch will never suspend a student. It's terrible. |
