Facebook-owned WhatsApp has announced that it is “temporarily banning” users who are accessing WhatsApp via third-party apps.

According to WhatsApp, these are unofficial apps developed by third parties that violate the terms of service of WhatsApp.

“WhatsApp doesn’t support these third-party apps because we can’t validate their security practices,” said the company in an official statement.

Those who are using these apps have not been banned permanently, however, the Facebook-owned company has advised users to back their chats up and switch to the official app.

Using these modified WhatsApp third-party apps may get you banned on WhatsApp.

Science/TechnologyFacebook Faces Criminal Probe Over Its Dodgy Data-sharing Deals – Report by AllTechNG(op): 6:13pm On Mar 14, 2019
All Tech News

Base on report reaching AllTechNG.com it seems that facebook luck is shacking as any time soon as the social network is now facing a criminal investigation due to its controversial data sharing practices, according to the New York Times.

US federal investigators are said to be scrutinising Mark Zuckerberg‘s company over how Facebook has entered into partnerships with other companies to provide access to the personal information of millions of Facebook users.

As part of the criminal investigation, a grand jury in New York has subpoenaed records from at least two “prominent” smartphone makers, reported the NYT, which got tipped off by people familiar with the situation.

The investigation was triggered by it coming to light, via another NYT report, that partnerships with the social network allowed some services to access the personal data of Facebook users; for example, the Bing search engine could see the names of Facebook users’ friends without their consent, and Spotify and Netflix could read a Facebook user’s private messages.

At the time, Facebook said the partnerships with other companies only allowed access to information users had consented to give it.

But this response didn’t seem to placate federal investigators, and now Facebook is facing a criminal probe.

While the US is leading the charge here, we wouldn’t be surprised if EU investigators also decided to probe Facebook, especially if the US investigation throws up some interesting insights into the social network’s data dealings.

We approached Facebook for any insight and comment on the situation, but it rather lazily pointed us to the response it gave the NYT… great work folks.

“We are cooperating with investigators and take those probes seriously,” said a Facebook spokesman. “We’ve provided public testimony, answered questions and pledged that we will continue to do so.”

So much for clarity and transparency. And this investigation comes at a time when Zuckerberg is waffling about getting data use under control and make Facebook a “privacy-focussed” platform. So it would seem like he’s got a lot more work ahead of him to bring that frankly bizarre vision into effect.

ComputersAll Tech News | HP Announces Borked Battery Bolster – Details by AllTechNG(op): 5:57pm On Mar 14, 2019
All Tech News

Report has it that HP INC, the company that sounds like someone using brown sauce as a pen refill, has announced that it is expanding its recall of batteries to cover more models against possible “fire and burn damage”.

Meanwhile, the announcement, which comes 14 months after the recall was first instigated, was actually first announced two months ago but came at a time when the US Product Safety Commission (CPSC) was embroiled in the US government shutdown over Trump and his giant Lego set.

The shutdown prevented the expanded recall from being communicated, so it has been reannounced today.

A total of 28,500 laptop battery units dating from as far back as 2016 and as recently as last December have been added to the 50,000 that were in the initial recall.

The CPSC warns: “HP has received eight new reports of battery packs in the US overheating, melting, or charring, including one report of minor injury and two reports of property damage totalling $1,100.”

Users will be asked to return the batteries, not the laptops in their entirety, for a full replacement.

Models affected include HP ProBooks, the HP x360, HP Pavillion x360, HP 11 NotebookBank of Industry decries N5.81 billion unpaid Omatek’s loan and HP ZBook. Remember that these batteries may have been sold as separate spares.

HP has a dedicated website which will help you identify if your product is affected and how to go about getting a return label to return the dodgy battery. A shiny new one will arrive in its sted. HP has asked people to check, even if they’d previously done so, just in case your model is on this new sh t list.

If you do have a dodgy battery, the advice is to stop using it. You should still be able to use your machine without the battery if the power cable is connected of course.

The odds on it being a problem are negligible but don’t be that person with a sense of moral superiority, but a burned down home.

Science/TechnologyAll Tech News | Google Pull Over 200 Android Apps Infected With Simbad Adware by AllTechNG(op): 5:42pm On Mar 14, 2019
According to report reaching us Google pull more than 200 Android apps that were stuffed with SimBad malware from the Google Play Store.

Meanwhile the app purging was triggered after boffins at cybersecurity firm Check Point alerted the search giant to the presence of an adware campaign running riot in the Play Store.

The adware campaign made use of malware dubbed SimBad, which sits within a malicious software development kit called ‘RXDrioder’ and can perform actions after an infected Android device is booted. SimBad then connects back to a control and command server where it receives instructions from the malicious actors controlling it.

“SimBad comes with a respected list of capabilities on the user’s device, such as removing the icon from the launcher, thus making it harder for the user to uninstall, start to display background ads and open a browser with a given URL,” said the Check Point researchers.

“SimBad acts now as an adware, but already has the infrastructure to evolve into a much larger threat.”

Once installed and connected, SimBad can then perform actions that facilitate adware campaigns, phishing attacks, as well as conduct remote downloads or open apps in an app store.

SimBad got its name from how it lurks behind a lot of simulator games which it has managed to infect, likely because it tricked app developers into using the malicious SDK which posed as a legitimate advert serving platform. Check Point noted that given the volume of apps it infected, SimBad likely managed to get downloaded around 150 million times.

Given Google has been getting better at Android security and how it polices the Play Store, we’re curious as to how SimBad got past its defences. We asked Google about this but have yet to hear back.

But it would appear that SimBad was well hidden and that there’s still work to be done to catch the sneakiest malware and malicious activity that exploit the more open nature of Android app development.

Science/TechnologyAll Tech News | Google Reportedly Reduces In-house Computer Production by AllTechNG(op): 5:11pm On Mar 14, 2019
All Tech News

Google’s computer-focused hardware efforts may not be panning out for the company like its smartphone business has, as Business Insider reports it has asked staff on those projects to temporarily find other work within the company.

Anonymous sources have told reporters that Google has made these requests to dozens of employees in its Google Create division, which is responsible for products like the Google Pixelbook and Pixel Slate. This team reportedly had a “bunch of stuff in the works,” meaning it’s likely that several hardware projects in development have been shelved as a result.

The report comes not long after a shoddy launch of Google’s latest tablet running its Chrome operating system (OS): the Pixel Slate. Was reception to the tablet so poor that it scared Google away from computer hardware entirely – at least for now? Only Google knows that answer.

This news certainly puts Google’s computer hardware efforts into question, but don’t think for a second that Google will lift its foot from the pedal on Chrome OS and Chromebooks on the whole.

In the education and budget spaces, Chromebooks rule the roost. Google makes little to no money on licensing the software, but the third-party devices that use it remain among the most accessible portals into Google’s suite of paid services and advertising-rich search engine.

If anything, this is Google finally recognizing that ultra-luxury devices are not an ideal container for its Chrome OS, not to mention that its OS needs more work before it’s readily available for use on both touch devices and traditional computers.

It’s also important to keep in mind that, according to Business Insider’s sources, this move is a temporary one. So, Google could very well return to making excellent laptops … someday.

PhonesHow To Overcome Smartphones With Non-expandable Storage by AllTechNG(op): 10:34pm On Mar 10, 2019
All Tech News

Do you guys know smartphone brands since past couple of years have realised the fact that as app sizes and the files downloads increase, users with smartphones featuring 16GB or 32GB inbuilt storage (or any other handsets without microSD card support) face a good amount of space crunch. This goes for both iPhone and Android users. While buying a new handset is the best option and the easiest, it is not cheap. But there are ways through which you can survive with limited storage smartphones. And it won’t cost you a dime.

Android/iOS: Delete unwanted download files
Yes, make sure you delete those files. There are certain email attachments or some other files that we often download. One can get rid of that as those files stay unused after some time. They will always be there in your emails so you can delete it from the smartphones.

Android/iOS: Save no images/videos on your smartphone
One can also delete those clicked images and videos from the smartphone and rely on services like Google Photos as it gives you virtually unlimited storage space for such content to back up.

Android/iOS: Delete apps if not needed
You can check which of the apps you haven’t used in a while and might not be using in near future, and simply uninstall them from the handset. This can free up a large amount of space as the cache files saved for the app are also out.

Android/iOS: Delete videos downloaded via streaming app
While deleting images and videos shot using the handset is one of the solutions, the other one could be deleting videos that you have downloaded via the streaming apps. There are certain apps that let you download episodes and moves for offline viewing. That can be removed one viewed.

Android: Clear that cache
Android users need to give special attention to the cached files. If you don’t clean it up regularly, the handset can save several GB worth of cached data, which is something you may not want. This can be cleared from the Settings app.

Android: Use ‘Lite’ versions of apps

Since Android is a platform that has the most number of ‘Lite’ versions of apps, for instance, Facebook Lite, Messenger Lite, Twitter Lite and more, one can use it instead of the regular apps that take more space.

iOS: Delete all unwanted iMessage images at once

As for the iOS users, they can simply delete all the images and videos others send them on platforms such as iMessage. iOS users can tap and hold an image inside a thread, tap on the ‘more’ option at the bottom and delete all the images at once.

iOS: You can delete pre-installed apps

Yes, unlike what Android smartphone OEMs offer, Apple gives you a chance to uninstall pre-installed apps such as Podcasts, iBooks, Reminders and more. Uninstall them, save some extra space. This feature is present for iPhones running iOS 10 or later versions.

Science/TechnologyLeaking Private Information: Twitter Now Allows Its Users To Report Issues by AllTechNG(op): 4:25am On Mar 10, 2019
Twitter on Friday rolled out new options for its users to report problematic tweets that share their personal information on the platform.

According to the open communication platform, while reporting a tweet, you will now have the ability to be more specific about the information being shared.

"We want to move faster in reviewing reported tweets that share personal information.

Starting today, you'll be able to tell us more about the tweet you are reporting," @TwitterSafety tweeted.Users will now be taken to an additional menu, allowing them to specify whether the tweet contains contact information, physical location, financial information, pictures and so on.

The move comes after Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey admitted that his platform has been too harsh at times when it comes to banning accounts in the wake of alleged political bias, harassment, hate speech or other policy violations.

There have been several incidents in the recent past where Twitter users in India, including journalists, posted abusive posts addressed to them on their accounts, asking Twitter to take immediate action.

PhonesFoldable Phones | Apple Faces Pressure Over Foldable Phones by AllTechNG(op): 3:34am On Mar 10, 2019
It is gathered that the arrival of foldable smartphones is fueling speculation about how Apple will respond to the latest trend in terms of product mix and pricing.

Following the steps of Samsung and Huawei, handset brands including Xiaomi, LG Electronics, Vivo, Lenovo (Motorola) are said to be most likely to roll out their foldable smartphones in the near future.

Although the initial sales of foldable smartphones are believed to be limited, the multiple releases of foldable models by Android-based handset vendors could undermine Apple’s status as being a leader of innovation in the field, industry observers commented.

Apple apparently cannot afford to ignore this emerging trend and must be keen on developing foldable models, said the observers.

One of the indications is that Samsung Display reportedly has delivered samples of its flexible displays to Apple and Google for verification as the Korea-based panel maker is eager to expand its flexible panel business, the sources said.

The flexible display sample received by Apple reportedly comes in a 7.2-inch size, which is 0.1-inch smaller than the flexible display used by the Galaxy Fold, indicated the sources.

Recent images exposed on the US Patent and Trademark Office also indicated that Apple is enhancing its deployment in the flexible OLED technology, the sources added.

Data from Gartner showed that sales of iPhone devices declined 11.8% on year to 64.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2018 when total global smartphone sales edged up 0.1% to 408.4 million units in the quarter.

PhonesHow Ultimate Ears BLAST App Now Supports Grouping With Up To Eight Speakers by AllTechNG(op): 10:44am On Mar 08, 2019
All Tech News:

It now clear back in April of last year, Ultimate Ears announced that its BLAST and MEGABLAST Bluetooth speakers would be receiving a number of features that they really should have come with out of the box. Nearly a year later, one of those features — grouping — has finally been added with an update to the BLAST companion app.

WHAT'S NEWPair up to 8 BLAST and MEGABLAST speakers for louder, more immersive sound! This update is the first one in over three months, and grouping seems to be the only addition. Basically, you can daisy-chain up to eight BLAST or MEGABLAST speakers together to create a surround-sound effect, which could actually be pretty handy in certain scenarios.

When you think about it, though, the odds that you'll be able to gather eight BLASTs together are slim to nil. It is a nice idea, though. The few BLAST owners out there should be able to update via the Play Store. If you're having issues with that for whatever reason, you can grab the latest "BLAST & MEGABLAST by Ultimate Ears" APK from APK Mirror.

I'm not sure where I put my BLAST speakers, but if you happen to have more than one, please let us know how well the feature works down below.

Science/TechnologyAlltechng.com - Twitter Announces First Publisher Insights Tool by AllTechNG(op):
All Tech News:

According to trending report, in a bid to help publishers perform better and generate more revenue on the platform, micro-blogging site Twitter has announced its first publisher insights tool called "Timing is Everything".

"'Timing is Everything' displays historical data showing when audiences are on Twitter watching and engaging with a video highlighting the best times to tweet video content and maximise engagement, conversation, and viewership," Ellen Fitzgerald, Product Manager, Twitter, wrote in a blog post on Wednesday.

The feature, instead of only showing when their organic followers were watching their video-posts, would rather show at which time period of the day are people just generally watching any video on Twitter -- maximum engagement time via video content on the platform.

"We encourage publishers to continue to post throughout the day in order to maximize reach; however, consider including posting during the most engaging times of the day and week as part of that strategy," Fitzgerald added. The tool comes as part of the "Analytics" drop-down menu in the "Media Studio" option.

Whether the feature was being made available to web, Android as well as iOS users remains unclear. In January, the Head of Content Partnerships at Twitter Kay Madati said the micro-blogging site was working on providing reach, relevance and revenue to publishers on its platform.

ALL TECH NEWS:

Current report as the Samsung Galaxy S10 isn't even technically available yet, but carriers have confirmed a day-one update will be waiting for early adopters.

Support documents from T-Mobile and Verizon detail the update, but presumably all versions of the Galaxy S10 family will get the same OTA out of the box.

Meanwhile the OTA, dated Match 8th, will improve the camera and the in-display fingerprint sensor.

Early opinions on the new ultrasonic fingerprint sensor have been mixed, but the update might help.

You'll also get new security patches, but Verizon says "new" in this case means the February 1st level. So, be on the lookout for that OTA as soon as you get that shiny new Galaxy S10 out of the box. It won't be too big—Verizon says total installation time is no more than 10 minutes.

PhonesHow Google’s Mail-in Repair Center Finally Accepts The Pixel 3 And 3 XL by AllTechNG(op): 11:46pm On Mar 07, 2019
All Tech News:

According to current trending tech update which reveals how Google released the Pixel 3 and 3 XL almost five months ago, and it’s been a bit of a pain to get it repaired should your phone end up damaged. Google’s online mail-in service didn’t accept the new phones, so you’d have to find a walk-in uBreakifix location for official repairs. Now, Google’s repair center will finally take your busted Pixel 3.

Yes it’s obvious sending your phone out for repair can take time—as long as ten days, according to the site. That might still be your best option if you don’t live near an authorized walk-in location. The Google repair center page still directs Pixel 3 and 3 XL owners to walk-in locations, but the support page has been updated to say Pixel 3s can go straight to Google. We reached out to Google for details. Here’s the statement.

Yes, all generations of out of warranty Pixels will now be part of the mail-in Google Repair options. We’re in the process of updating the page to reflect that.

You need to enter an IMEI or serial number to initiate a repair request, and the system doesn’t recognise the Pixel 3 as of this posting. However, the repair center page will be updated with support for the Pixel 3 soon. Note, this is separate from phones with Preferred Care, which entitles you to a replacement device with overnight shipping.

PhonesHow To Know If Someone Has Blocked Your Number On Iphone by AllTechNG(op): 6:36am On Mar 07, 2019
Recent events and update shows that in this digital era, these “dark times” are often lurking in form of cyber attacks, malware threats or in a very nonthreatening — yet hurtful — way: being blocked by someone without getting know.Blocking someone on an iPhone is as easy as it is to contact them.

While it is a convenient feature for the user who is blocking someone, the same feature may leave the person whohas been blocked a bit flummoxed after being unable to contact them. Readers must note that there is no absolute way to be sure if you have been blocked by a particular iPhoneuser (apart from the contact telling you this, of course) but there are signs that can sort ofconfirm that indeed you have been blocked.

If you are in a situation where you feel thatyou have been blocked by someone but are not sure try these steps:Call the contact....This is the first and obvious thing you need to do to check if you have been blocked by aniPhone user. We blocked both an iPhone user and an Android user and in both cases heardthe message saying "The number you are trying to reach is busy. Please call again later.

"While this may be a one-off case, but if this is the only message you hear every time youcall them, then there is a good chance that you have been blocked

.....Send them a message

The next obvious step to send an SMS to the contact you think has blocked you. Once yousend a message look for the delivery status. Again, we tried it for both the iPhone user andan Android user and the results here varied.

While in case of iPhone we didn't get the'delivered' status in the iMessage chat window, but in case of Android, the message chatshowed that the message was delivered. Therefore, this way of checking whether or not you have been blocked becomes particularly difficult in case you are an Android user.

As we mentioned, these aren’t foolproof methods of finding out if you’ve been blocked butcan give you a fair indicator if someone has blocked your number on iPhone.

ALL TECH NEWS:

All Tech News observed as it is no longer news as India's Internet users expected to register double digit growth to reach 627 million in 2019,driven by rapid internet growth in rural areas, market research agency Kantar IMRBWednesday said.

Internet usage in the country has exceeded half a billion people for first time, pegged at566 million, driven by rural internet growth and usage. In its ICUBE 2018 report that tracks digital adoption and usage trends in India, it noted thatthe number of internet users in India has registered an annual growth of 18 percent and isestimated at 566 million as of December 2018, a 40 percent overall internet penetration, itobserved.

It projected a double digit growth for 2019 and estimates that the number of internet userswill reach 627 million by the end of this year.Of the total user base, 87 percent or 493 million Indians, are defined as regular users, having accessed internet in last 30 days. Nearly 293 million active internet users reside inurban India, while there are 200 million active users in rural India, it said.

The report found that 97 percent of users use mobile phone as one of the devices toaccess internet. While internet users grew by 7 percent in urban India, reaching 315 million users in 2018,digital adoption is now being propelled by rural India, registering a 35 percent growth ininternet users over the past year.

It is now estimated that there are 251 million internet users in rural India, and this isexpected to reach 290 million by the end of 2019, the report said."Increased availability of bandwidth, cheap data plans and increased awareness driven bygovernment programmes seem to have rapidly bridged the digital gap between urban andrural India.

It is recorded that Chinese online retailers have started discounting iPhones for the second time this year as
Apple Inc wrestles with a prolonged sales slowdown in the world’s
largest market.
Several electronics vendors announced discounts on iPhone this week, following
mass discounts in January just before Apple reported sinking sales in .
Gadget retailer Co Ltd said it would slash the price of the iPhone XS by as
much as 1,000 yuan ($148.95) from its official price. Suning had lowered the prices of
other iPhone models in January along with other retailers, but those cuts excluded the
iPhone XS.

Online retail giant JD.com Inc said it would offer discounts on a range of Apple products
including the iPhone XS and XS Max, with models of the latter device selling at discounts
of up to 1,700 yuan. Like Suning, JD.com initially did not discount the iPhone XS upon its

Apple’s sales from China declined 20 percent year-on-year, according to its most recent
earnings report. Slowing demand for smartphones and increased competition from local
brands have chipped at its dominance in the country.
The U.S. company has yet to change the official sticker prices of its devices that it lists on
its Chinese website. Yet the company has partnered with Ant Financial, the finance arm of
Alibaba Group , and several state-owned banks to let consumers purchase
iPhones via interest-free loans
