Good day fish farmers/farmers in the house, this piece of write up, as the title goes, is to correct the misbelief we all have or had about the tilapia fish, as regards Farming or culturing them.

Here are some of the misbelief/misconception we have or were told to believed about the farming of Tilapia fish.

1. That they are fragile in nature:- yes, many people believe this line of thought, that tilapia fish are fragile and can't withstand harsh environment.
#THE TRUTH:- they are strong and rugged, and can withstand harsh environment, climate or weather.

2. That they can't be rear or farmed in concrete or trapouline ponds:- this is one of the frequently ask questions about tilapia Farming I have ever answered, as we were meant to believe is practically impossible to rear tilapia in an artificial way.
#THE TRUTH::- before we had the Genetically improved tilapia Farming, yes, you can't farmed them in an artificial pond some years back, but now that they have been genetically improved on, one can successfully farm them in an artificial space.

3. That there are no market for tilapia fish:- this statement is only in our head, and we kept to it as if that's the truth for quite a long time.
#THE TRUTH:- do you know that only Cold rooms alone can practically clear your stock? Now this is it, if you have table size tilapia fish, you can be supplying to cold rooms on a weekly basis, in this case you completely sideline the soul called middle men and women, and have total control of the market yourself. aside that, big restaurant, hotels, bars, etc are in constant need of this fish.
The hybrid (red ones) can be exported directly to the US or Europe in frozen form/state.

4. They are expensive to rear/maintain:- this is one of the funniest thing I have heard about tilapia Farming.
#THE TRUTH:- tilapia feed consumption rate is minimal, compare to catfish. Eg if you need 2 bags of feeds to feed 2000 pieces of catfish in a day, for tilapia you will need just 1 bag for a day (Assuming they are the same age). In addition, tilapia unlike catfish, feeds on kitchen waste, green leaf etc.

5. High technique or know how is needed to farm tilapia:- this also is one misconception we are battling within us.
#THE TRUTH:- the set of people that needs little training, are those people that have never rear fish in their life, including catfish and tilapia. The same rearing technique one applies to catfish is the same for tilapia.

6. You can get the Fingerlings from the wild and start:- this is the foundation of success or failure in tilapia Farming, people don't know that getting wild tilapia fingerlings, is a risk to your investment, that is why you should get your Fingerlings from a reputable farm, that has the Genetically improved tilapia fingerlings (GITF).
#THE TRUTH:- most people don't know that, just like how we have hatchery for catfish, we also have for tilapia as well, specially for (GITF)

7. They take longer time to get matured:- this misconception is not totally wrong anyway, to some large extent is true before the improvement.
#THE TRUTH:- if we stocked wild tilapia fingerlings, what will you expect? It takes forever for wild tilapia to get to a sizeable size.
