Business / Re: Advice On Relocation To Nigeria From Uk by ama27(f): 10:26pm On Jul 07, 2010
my own 2 pence  mostly from lesons learnt! : me and my family have been in  the UK  for about 10yrs and began the relocation journey last year ( i dont know if you have a family that is moving with you)
we decided that my husband goes first and then me and my daughter join him after and this plan has worked well for us.
In terms of practical things:

(1) have u considered a 2nd car if u can afford it , one that is not as expensive as the first but still reliable, cos flogging the same car everyday will soon cause the car to start having prob in naija. so it is some time good if u can  inter change to give d 4x4 a rest and also because if your car goes to the mechanic or develops any fault you have an alternative while u are trying to sort it out.
(2) an inverter to compliment your gen
(3) please try to aviod buying electronics in the UK and taking it to naija , it is best to go and buy over there becos it seems that electronics that go to the tropics are engineered different and if anything happens tha parts would be dfifficult to find ( we have lost 2 42" LCD TV to this prob) even if you go to the manufacturer for the repair (in our own case    LG) any electronicvs u need you can find in naija.

You mentioned that you have your biz sorted good on you.  i wish you all the best and i know it is not a decision you will regret ,  we havent.
by the way one of the biz we run in naija is a travel agency so please visit our site and we can give u a quote for your travel  grin abi i must use every opp to advertise. www.alphatravelsng.com

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: How Much Does Procter And Gamble Pay Msc Holders by ama27(f): 6:21pm On May 17, 2010
Hey

Let me add my little 2 pence,

bros ur Msc is not a big deal infact u know how many naija graduate have finished in the uk , (all u need to do is count all the friends you know)

i can tell u P& G is not going to pay a lot, but its a global company and they do a lot of people development. HR is standardised globally and you would learn a whole lot by grabbing the opportunity.

When u get to careers in africa and see the amount of graduates there u will understand what i mean by its not a big deal , ur MSc , alsoyou would know ur personal circumstances in the Uk from your comments i assume you are on a student visa so its not like your options are vast

The study visa they give u people may soon be cancelled as a result of the LIb Dem/conservative coalition as u know the immigration policies to be taken on board is the convservative one.

so for the rest of ur visa period , ure are limited to?

The mistake most students make is that instead of going back asap they stay trying'to find a good job' but end up with customer service role for a long time, a time so long that their degrees would have expired (or dont u know it expires)

do not think cos u have got a uk degree the red carpet is rolled out for you in nigeria, those u left behind have been working and gaining experience.

my advice grab the oppourtunity and thank your stars that u have a choice and can avoid making some of the mistakes others have made.

Just in case you are wondering , i am also a uk graduate ( which does not mean jack) , i have been to careers in africa and i have relocated , i am also british so i didnt have to.
well all the best .

Travel / Re: Travelling To Uk With British Passport by ama27(f): 6:26pm On Jan 25, 2010
Technically you should not have a problem , but just be prepared for our naij officials who like to cause trouble and my need to be tipped.
On arrival in the UK you only need a British passport. The only other thing is that if you need to come back to naij in the near futurte you may consider staying and sorting it if not you would have to face the officials at Nigerian House for either a passport ( VERY LONG THING AS THEY WOULD NEED PROVE THAT U HAD ONE IN THE PAST / OR TELL YOU TO BRING YOUR FATHER( no exaggeration) or get a vis a( which is not as long a proces and not necessarily cheap either) but still Nigerian House is a nightmare either way!

@mbulela

Thanks that was some great advice . it give me a clearer picture as im not used to naija's HR system where you advertise a role (that is not senior role ) and u dont put the salary.
If i have anymore questions i hope you dont mind me coming back to you.

@Ajanlekoko

Thanks as i well, it might sound cocky but i know what im worth (not that its a lot ) but it terms of that role i stand a fantastic chance all things being equal.
However i am well aware that in my search for a job in naija MTN is a major potential employer and i dont want to mess things up. i'll explain- earlier on in the year i decided to 'test the waters' and applied for a BAT role did the interviews and was offered the job, when they asked when i can start i said i needed 3 months ( as i was in a diff contract at the time ). As u probably know now they didnt answer me as it was like im a time waster and thats how i lost that one.
Now i have gone to meet them and they arent answering as they dont think im serious so i have messed that rapport/ oppourtunity that is why im being careful with MTN so that the same thing doesnt happen and when i now move in 3 months they wont answer me.

I think ill follow @mbudela advice and start my job hunt now and hope it doesnt back fire !

Thanks guys!
Career / Re: Telecommunications Professionals Zone by ama27(f): 9:51pm On Sep 16, 2009
@mbulela
Thanks for getting back to me your response has helped. I am currently in a contract for the next couple of months in the UK and myy daily rate is over £400 as a Business Analyst, but i was considering chasing this oppourtunity at MTN instead as i want to move back to Nigeria before April next year so i thot maybe i should grab this oppourtunity now. But now that youve told me i think its best i finish my UK contract then come and start to look for a job as if i leave this contract for that salary it would be financial suicide.

I think its best i finish the contract first then even if i have to spend months looking for a job in Nigeria at least i'll have some savings to live on or wat do u think? ay 180k (cash), my 3 months salary would be just able to pay my daughters school fees. Buying a car is even impossible etc etc

I was told that about 6 million is a good salary in Nigeria but if im right the 6million is not totally cash?

Please do u have a pointers for me about job searches etc.

A brief background , am a business analyst with 5 years experience i have worked on SAP, CRM,PDA, Blackberry depolyments and have also project managed smaller change projects . i have also got a post grad degree. im well versed in all mapping languauges, req gathering, UAT etc

Thanks

Travel / Re: Can't Read & Write But Need A Nigeria Passport & Uk Visiting Visa. Pls Help! by ama27(f): 9:07am On Jun 08, 2009
@poster i would suggest you go through an immigration lawyer , this thing is not a big deal, u just need to concentrate on her for 1 year, if u guys clicked then i can bet that she has potential and what it takes. There are so many people WELL schooled, WELL travelled that are NOT marriage material and ARE VERY STUPID, education does not teach you everything. i have friends whose fathers are professors married to semi illetrates and the kids and WHOLE family have done VERY well.

If you are in the UK then u probably know all about Adult education prog in your borough or council. It is definately not a barrier, education is a continous process.

I am in the process of trying to move back to naija , and even im taking lessons on how to live in my new enviroment, this is the same way even an educated person coming to the Uk would need reorientation so , dont let anyone discourage u. some peoples advise is not out of wickedness but ignorance.

There are some many asians that are in the UK and cant read and write , spouse visa etc

Let me make you laugh , Many years ago i used to work at Barclays as a cashier and i used to have LOADS of asians coming in , they had to bring translators , they could not sign or fill the forms so they would come with their family to translate , when i ask for ID , they would produce A BRITISH PASSPORT. THEY COULDNT EVEN SPEAK ENGLISH. he he. it is because of this that they introduce the Life in the UK test for citizenship. So dont worry , spouse visa, 2years , indefinate.

As long as she speaks your language they cant stop u from having your wife with you. infact if u marry in naija (which u need to do anyway) then just submit the application , in naja and wait for it , the only thing is u NEED TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL the docs u need to produce as well as EVIDENCE of a relationship, i.e pictures etc, but since ure a nigerian who travels home it should not be a problem.

Bros marriage is a serious thing so pray (if u are religious) and let your GOD direct you but i can tell u it is KEY that u guys relate well and understand each other and that she is willing to learn.

ALSO ENSURE THAT YOU CAN SUPPORT HER AS SHE WONT BE ABLE TO ACTIVELY CONTRIBUTE TO THE FAMILY INCOME FOR A WHILE ( CHILD BEARING INCLUDED DUE TO THE CIRCUMSTANCES)
I would also advise not introducing her to friends straight away it may be too much to take in at once, just a few VERY close friends and also try and find a sister (if u have one that is young in the UK ) or friend who is female that can show her the ropes from a female perspective.

IT IS WELL WITH U
