Crime / Landlord Sets Six Youths Ablaze For Smoking Hemp by amadibethelya: 8:24am On Aug 08, 2013
The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a middle-aged man, Mukaila Adebesin, for allegedly setting ablaze six people in Ita Balogun Compund, Ago-Oko, Abeokuta.

The victims are Adesanya, 20, Sulaiman Adebesin, 20, Saburi Seteolu 18, Raheem Bello 19, Azeez Alabi 20, and Kola Sodeinde 19.

It was gathered that the victims were allegedly set ablaze by Adebesin at 7pm because they were gambling and smoking Indian hemp on his premises.

A witness, who pleaded anonymity, said Adebesin, a commercial bus driver, had just returned from an outing when he saw the six youths in his compound.

He said, “Their activities made the driver engage them in an argument. As the talks became heated, Adebesin reached for a can of petrol which he emptied on them.

“The victims attempted to flee when it dawned on them that the liquid poured on them was petrol.

“But they caught fire from a stick of the Indian hemp being smoked by one of them. They suffered high degree burns due to the incident.”

Adebesin, who is currently being detained at Oke-Itoku Police Station, was said to have turned himself in to the police immediately after the incident .

Our correspondent gathered that other youths in the area, on learning of the development, stormed Adebesin’s compound, and vandalised his apartment and injured his wife who is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Abeokuta.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said that investigations had already commenced into the matter.

Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said, “Adebesin might be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations. He said four of the youths had been admitted at the General Hospital, Ijaiye, while two others were taken to a private clinic for treatment.

“Information available to us is that the suspect had an argument with the youths before he poured PMS on them. For now, we cannot ascertain other circumstances that led to the incident but we have the suspect in our custody.”

The police spokesman added that the command’s commissioner, Mr. Ikemefuna Okoye, also warned youths in the area not to engage in any reprisals, saying the police would not condone any act that could disrupt peace in the state.

Politics / Fisherman Finds Shoe With Remains Of A Foot Inside On Shore by amadibethelya: 8:05am On Aug 08, 2013
A fisherman on the New Jersey Shore made an unsettling discovery — a black, high-top sneaker with the remains of a foot inside.

State police asked Wednesday for any information from the public. The fisherman found the shoe Tuesday afternoon. It was an Adidas size 5½, for the right foot, and some of the toes had nail polish on them, police said.

Police said they had not determined the age of the person. They said the remains would be sent to a state anthropologist for DNA testing. The shoe was found at Corson’s Inlet State Park, about 15 miles down the shore from Atlantic City.

At least a dozen detached feet have washed up along the coast of British Columbia and Washington state since 2007, most inside shoes or boots, and including at least one matching pair.

Forensics experts have noted that the relative weakness of the ankle can cause a decomposing body to separate there.

“My goal is to make visa application process painless and pleasant for Nigerians.

Politics / Jonathan Qualify To Contest 2015 Presidency – Court Rules by amadibethelya: 9:23pm On Aug 06, 2013
With the emergence of Tony Anenih as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the ruling People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), the party may dump national convention to pick its presidential candidate for 2015 general election.

Party sources told BusinessDay that the party will instead opt for affirmation to ratify the candidacy of President Goodluck Jonathan for the general election in 2015.

Sources disclosed that no party member would contest against President Jonathan in 2015 and hence the statement credited to national chairman of the party Bamanga Tukur that Jonathan can seek re-election.

An Abuja High court presided by Justice Mudashiru Oniyangi, weekend ruled that President Jonathan is constitutionally qualified to re-contest the presidency in 2015 and the leadership of the Party swiftly responded to hail the ruling.

Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State had claimed President Jonathan signed a pact with the PDP governors that he would serve one term but the presidency has vehemently denied the existence of such a pact.

Sources however disclosed that the presidency may have ‘settled’ supposed opponents of President Jonathan who may want to contest against him in 2015.

Olisa Metu, the national publicity secretary of the party, in the reaction to the ruling of the FCT High court said “the leadership of the PDP applauds the ruling by the FCT High Court that President Goodluck Jonathan, as a Nigerian, has the constitutionally guaranteed right to seek re-election in 2015.

“This landmark ruling is yet another victory to the nation’s democracy. It has laid to rest the unnecessary debate on whether or not the President is constitutionally eligible to seek re-election in 2015.

“The court held that President Jonathan is in his first term, which commenced on the 29th of May, 2011 and thus is free to seek a second term in office in the 2015 general election under the platform of the PDP or any other political party.

“The import of this judgment is that it is now left for the PDP as party and Nigerians to decide, through legitimate processes, whether or not to return President Jonathan to the Presidency in 2015 if he indicates interest.

“With the ruling, it is now left for the President, the PDP and the people to decide and not for some people to try to stop others from exercising their constitutionally guaranteed rights through intimidations and harassment”, the party said.

Foreign Affairs / Spain Arrests Paedophile Freed By Morocco by amadibethelya: 7:44pm On Aug 05, 2013
A Spanish paedophile, whose release from prison in Morocco under a royal pardon sparked angry protests, was arrested in Spain on Monday. Meanwhile, Morocco’s director of prisons has been sacked after an inquiry blamed his department for the release.

A convicted Spanish paedophile set free from prison in Morocco under a royal pardon has been arrested by police in Spain.

Daniel Galvan Vina was detained in Murcia in south-eastern Spain on Monday, a spokesman for the country’s interior ministry said.

Galvan, who once worked at the University of Murcia, will be taken to Madrid "in the coming hours" where he will be brought before Spain's top criminal court, the National Audience, which will decide his fate, the spokesman added.

The news came as King Mohamed VI of Morocco announced that the country’s director of prisons has been sacked after an inquiry blamed his department for Galvan’s release.

Galvan, said to be in his 60s, was pardoned by the king and freed last Tuesday from a jail in Kenitra, north of the capital Rabat.

He had been sentenced in September 2011 to 30 years in prison for the rape of 11 children aged between four and 15.

Public protests

The release sparked a mass protest in Rabat Friday that was broken up by riot police and led to several reported injuries to demonstrators and journalists.

Growing public outrage prompted King Mohamed VI to revoke the royal pardon for Galvan on Sunday, while the palace said in a statement that the king had been unaware of the nature of the man's crimes and that an inquiry into his release had been ordered.

The results of that inquiry led to the dismissal of the head of the prison system in Morocco, whose department was accused of providing false information over Galvan’s criminal record.

"The inquiry focused on determining the culpabilities and failings that led to this release," a palace statement said.

"The inquiry concluded that the said administration inadvertently provided erroneous information about the criminal record of the prisoner in question when requested by the royal court.”

Galvan was among 48 Spanish prisoners pardoned by the king in response to a request from King Juan Carlos, who visited Morocco last month.

Crime / Housewife Bites Maid’s Private Parts by amadibethelya: 8:11am On Aug 04, 2013
Emotion flowed like river at the Onitsha Chief Magistrate Court yesterday when Chiamaka (other names withheld), a mother of two, was arraigned by the police for savagely biting her nine-year-old maid, including her private part. This happened in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State.

Chiamaka, who hails from Eziagu in Enugu State, was arraigned in suit number MO/38/2013 for allegedly inflicting bodily harm on her maid, Nnenna Nwafor, on July 25 when she allegedly used dangerous weapons and her teeth to inflict injuries on the girl.

The Police Prosecution counsel, Mr. Uwakwe Okoji, told the court that the suspect, a mother of two in her mid- 20s, committed the crime on July 25, 2013 at No 7 Udemba Street, Woliwo Onitsha, where she allegedly gave her maid bites all over the body including her private part.

He described the act as not only evil, but also one of man’s inhumanity to man. He equally told the court that the husband of the suspect had since sent her out of his house because of the act, while praying the court to look into the matter with a view to bringing the suspect to justice.

Widow and mother of the victim, Mrs. Nwafor, told the court amidst tears of how her daughter was battered by her mistress with bites, including her virgina; adding that, since then, the family has been passing through difficult times attending to the victim medically.

“I am a widow; I had challenges raising my children after my husband died. It was the difficulty that made meI to send my daughter to live with Chiamaka. I never knew that the injuries she inflicted on her were as serious as this until when she removed her pant and I noticed that she had a very serious cut in her private part. There are also other bite scars on her face, buttocks and, in fact, all over her body. I can’t really understand this type of punishment meted out to an innocent girl,” she said, sobbing.

The victim, Nnenna, while narrating her ordeal to Saturday Sun after the court session, painted a gory picture of what she passed through in the hands of her mistress. She said that on several occasions, her mistress had poured hot water on her, and attacked her with dangerous weapons on some other occasions.

She further disclosed how her mistress forced her down and ordered her to open her legs before biting her severally in her private part, after inflicting same on her buttocks and other parts of her body.

The presiding Magistrate, Mr. M A Okonkwo, said he was dumbfounded over the incident, adding that he never believed that a woman, who had passed through pains of childbirth, could inflict this type of injuries on a daughter of a fellow woman and ordered the suspect to be remanded in prison custody.

Politics / Lagos Gay Pastor Goes To Jail by amadibethelya: 8:11am On Aug 03, 2013
The Founder and General Overseer of a Pentecostal Church in Benin City, Pastor Phillip Ogbebor is now an unusual inmate at the federal medium security prison, Oko after a magistrate court ordered that he be remanded for having sex with male members of his Church.

Surprisingly, the randy pastor of Breakthrough Ministries, Owina Street, off Sakponba road Benin city, neither denied the allegation of homosexuality levelled against him by the parents of one of his victims nor blamed the devil as many culprits will do. Instead, he told Saturday Sun that “I am only passing through temptation. I only did it four times with the man who is 22 years old and a regular member of my church. I can’t claim that it was the devil’s influence , let God decide my case.”

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Foluso Ayodeji Adebanjo told Saturday Sun that the Pastor was apprehended recently by men of the State Criminal Investigation Department of the Edo state police command following a complaint lodged by the father of one of his victims. Trouble started when the victim who had been put under an oath of secrecy by the pastor decided to report his ordeal to his parents who in turn decided to inform the police.

The victim who doesn’t want his name in print told Saturday Sun that he has been unduly harassed by Pastor Ogbebor since 2007 when he was only fifteen years old and that he made him to take several oaths of secrecy in order not to reveal the secret to anybody.

He further said that the suspect threatened to kill him if he disclosed the act to anyone.

According to him, “each time, I told him it is painful and that I don’t want to do it again. I told him I will tell my parents but he forced me to take oath saying if I ever tell anyone I will not live to see the next day”

He furthered revealed how Ogbebor mixed olive oil with sand and robbed it on his head while chanting incantations in an unusual language and casting spells on him, with an emphasis on the fact that if he tells anybody he would die like a fowl. He said to buttress his threat he gave him the liver and gizzard of chicken to eat saying these acts were usually performed at 12.00 midnight under the guise of a night vigil.

The victim who said he is a regular member of Pastor Ogbebor’s church said he was disturbed by his deteriorating health and was forced to narrate his ordeal to another pastor.

He said the man of God advised him to report the bad conduct of Pastor Ogbebor before the congregation which he did but Ogbebor was said to have denied it before the congregation. After the confession by the victim to the congregation, his father who is also a member of the church promptly confronted Pastor Ogbebor on the matter and as the issue was degenerating into rowdiness in the church, Pastor Ogbebor was said to have confessed to the crime and pledged to take the victim who has been battling with spiritual and health challenges to the hospital for medical treatment.

It was at that stage that the father of the victim who was in shock over the development reported the matter to the police for proper investigation.

Speaking to Saturday Sun, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Foluso Ayodeji Adebanjo commended the SCID Benin under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner of Police J. Ibim for a good job done.

He sai d the suspect will soon be charged to court after the completion of investigation.

The police boss had about three weeks ago paraded Pastor Ogbebor along with 25 other crime suspects at the command headquarters, Benin city.

Saturday Sun however gathered that the 42 year old randy pastor has been arraigned before a Magistrate court in Benin city on a charge bordering on indecent assault contrary to Sections 214(1) and 353 of the constitution respectively.

The Magistrate was said to have ordered his detention at the Oko medium security prison in the state capital pending the commencement of trial.

Crime / CALLOUSNESS: Woman Beats Three-year-old Girl To Death For Vomitting by amadibethelya: 9:03am On Aug 02, 2013
A 21-year-old woman, Rebecca Bassey, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly beating her husband’s three-year-old niece, Deborah Bassey, to death.

According to police authorities, the suspect beat up the girl because she vomited and defecated on herself.

A police source told PUNCH Metro on Thursday that the incident occurred at Ijaiye Ojokoro area of the state on July 22, 2013.

He said, “The victim (Deborah) lost her mother in 2010. Early this year, Deborah’s father was evicted from his home and he decided to send Deborah and his second child to go and stay with his brother, Vincent, until he settles down.

“Deborah and her nine-year-old sister were living with Vincent and his wife, Rebecca, in a one-room apartment at Powerline, Jankara, Ijaiye Ojokoro. However, Rebecca was always maltreating the two children.”

According to police investigations, on the day of the incident, Deborah woke up around 5.30am with a high temperature.

The three-year-old girl was said to have started vomiting and defecating soon after. This was said to have angered Rebecca, who instead of administering treatment to the child, decided to beat her up.

A police source said, “In the process of beating the girl, the suspect pushed her and she fell, hitting her head against the edge of a wooden chair in the room.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim started to bleed from the head. Some neighbours rushed her to Ahmadiyya Hospital, where she was referred to Orile Agege General Hospital where she later died.

A woman leader in the area, Kudirat Ogunseyi, was said to have reported the matter to Ijaye Ojokoro Police Division after which the suspect was arrested.

Some neighbours, in their statements at the police station, described the suspect as a hot-tempered woman, who was fond of beating the children.

“The way that woman beats up the children was very worrying to the extent that the landlord had threatened to evict them,” one of the statements reads.

Vincent told the police that he was not present when his wife beat his niece to death.

“I was not at home when the incident happened. I am a photographer during daytime but I work as a vigilante group member. So I hardly sleep at home,” he said.

The suspect however said she did not kill the victim deliberately. She said she only pushed Deborah and she hit her head against the chair.

“I am a housewife and I have a 10-month-old baby. I did not mean to kill her (Deborah). I only pushed her because she vomited and defecated on the floor. I was only trying to correct her. It was not deliberate. I am a mother too and I know how I would feel if my son was killed,” she said.

It was learnt that the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.

A source at the SCID said the police were waiting for autopsy. He added that if other wounds were found on other parts of the victim’s body, it would prove that the victim was indeed tortured before her death.

When contacted on the telephone, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said she would call back.

Health / Men With Larger Testicles Are Likely To Develop High Blood Pressure, Heart Disea by amadibethelya: 1:11am On Aug 02, 2013
They are also more likely to be hospitalised with heart problems and tend to be heavier, drink more alcohol, and to have higher blood pressure.

Researchers at the University of Florence believe that their findings could suggest that having large testicles is a sign of ill health, and that it could be used as a way of predicting heart disease risk.

However they did not go as far as specifying what constituted 'large' testicles.

Giulia Rasterelli, who led the study, told The Telegraph: ‘Although it is generally assumed that testis size can predict reproductive fitness, our results indicate that this objective parameter can provide insights also on overall health and cardiovascular disease risk.

‘Further studies are needed for clarifying determinants and mechanisms of testis enlargement that could mediate the increased incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events.’

The scientists studied 2,809 men who attended sexual health clinics.

They recorded the size of the men’s testicles and tested their hormone levels before tracking their health for seven years.

During this time period, they found that the men with bigger testicles were more likely to develop heart disease.

They also discovered that the men with larger testicles tended to have higher levels of the hormone, luteinising hormone, which is known to affect testicle size.

The scientists believe that this hormone could be damaging to the heart.

The scientists were surprised by the results as previous research has suggested that men with larger testicles are more fertile which is generally perceive to be a sign of good health.

The researchers accept that their study was based on men who had problems with sexual dysfunction and that, therefore, their findings may not apply to all men.

Crime / Born Without Skull, US Doctors Create Fresh Head For Nigerian Child by amadibethelya: 12:58pm On Jul 28, 2013
With much expectation, the world is waiting to see OkikiJesu Olawuyi grab a fitting place in the Guinness Book of World Records. Many across the world want to see this happen. And what that means is that a Nigerian child is well on her way to making history once she scales the mountain of surgeries standing in her path of life.

OkikiJesu Olawuyi was born without a skull but not without a will to live. Bones from her hands are being obtained to construct a skull bone to help her live. Amazingly, she is winning this battle for her life at John Hopkins University in far away United States of America. There, the best hands the world can assemble are with her every passing hour fighting a medical war to give life to a miracle child who has announced to the entire human community that she has something different to offer. First grade surgeons – irrespective of colour, race and tongue are tasking their expertise to see that this wonder of the 21st century lives to tell her story and reports say that they are doing a great job to save her.

OkikiJesu is getting moral and material support from across the world to help her live. An avalanche of support is coming her way. Her parents are carrying the burden of pain and anguish with stoic patience. They are fighting to remedy a medical case they cannot tell how it all started. The child needs a lot more financial assistance to pull through, her father, Mr. Caleb Olawuyi, says. He disclosed that she needed an additional $500,000 to undergo the final operation that would enable her live a normal life. Experts say that is possible and they can achieve that. While appealing for generous support from government, corporate organizations and private individuals to help the baby live, Mr. Olawuyi, has equally urged government to set up funds to assist babies afflicted with critical ailments. Speaking straight from the heart, he noted that one needed to be close to a child in pains to know how it feels.

Since news of the child’s medical condition was disclosed, the world has been aghast. She was born on May 11, 2010 with a rare birth deformity which means over 50 per cent of her skull doesn’t exist. The world has not seen anything of this stuff. In recorded history, Sunday Sun gathered that this medical condition has never been reported anywhere. The child’s condition is one that appears to have turned medicine on its head, having thrown up tremendous professional challenge to the human race. Now, the very best the world has known are fighting a crunchy battle to overcome this, leaving many – particularly those with hearts of stone- wondering if there is nothing they can offer to help.

Now from the home sector, help is coming for three-year-old Okiki and her parents. Since the condition of the baby became public knowledge, a non profit organization had stepped in to assist. Global Initiative for Peace, Love and Care (GIPLC) has been doing all it can to give life to the child whose medical condition is not traceable to her parents. With the assistance of the organization’s Coordinator and Project Manager, Mr. Nuhu Kwajafa, the child and her parents were on May 4, 2013, flown to the United States. There, she is currently undergoing skull reconstruction surgery at the John Hopkins University Medical Centre.

Now, the child’s and her father’s cry for help comes ringing through the airways asking Nigerians to help her live. Here is a child the world is interested in. The non-profit organization is doing its best at that level to help her survive. Sunday Sun gathered that while the world was a short while away from screaming uhuru at the wonderful breakthrough, an unforeseen complication arose after over 14 hours of surgery. This followed inconsistencies in her medical history. Besides, her case marked a maiden attempt in paediatric neurosurgery. This, therefore, led to a further accumulation of medical bills totaling over US$500,000. This bill is spiraling every passing day OkikiJesu and her parents spend at the Johns Hopkins facility.

Specialists in the USA have identified the rare birth deformity which OkikiJesu is suffering, as Congenital Cranial Deficiency. Before now, she had been to several hospitals but not cured, but luck flashed on her pathway when GIPLC, which is based in Abuja took up her case. Sunday Sun learnt that since then, the organization has recorded significant success in efforts to get medical care for her. Within just a week, it raised about $234,000, an equivalent of N37 million through kind gestures from individuals and groups for her treatment at John Hopkins Hospital.

Kwajafa , just back from the United States, told Sunday Sun that “prior to the complications which arose, what made a determination of the full cost of Okiki’s surgery difficult is that in modern times, it is an extremely rare (perhaps singular) medical condition with no precedence to draw estimates from.

“This latter fact also means that it is equally difficult to tell what other medical complications may arise. An example are fluids that were retained in her cranial cavity which have posed an unforeseen challenge and may have led to a fatal infection.”

Kwajafa’s worry is that, “OkikiJesu may not be released from hospital until all outstanding bills have been paid. We and her parents are desirous of her condition being fully remedied before she leaves the hospital.” Against this backdrop, he said “We would like to appeal to the global public to support our cause in ensuring that OkikiJesu Olawuyi lives.”
Medical analysts believe she will be a living testimony if she recovers. According to GIPLC, her case remains the only one of its kind in the world.

When OkikiJesu’s father, Mr. Olawuyi spoke to Sunday Sun on telephone from John Hopkins Hospital, he expressed optimism that the girl was doing well and had remained in stable condition. He said “We thank God that she is responding positively to every operation performed on her. The doctors attending to her are also pleased with her present condition. They said she is a miracle child, because she is so far the only child in the world with this kind of health condition.

“They told us that there is no case of her type in medical history at their disposal the world over. There are three renowned doctors attending to OkikiJesu and the experience is so great.

“They keep assuring us that everything will be fine soon. We are also hoping positively and asking God to deliver our child.”
In a voice laden with emotion, he appealed to Nigerians to assist the child to live through their generous donations, pointing out that with money available, the baby was sure to survive.

“But our greatest challenge here is the cost of her treatment in the hospital. It’s indeed a very tough experience for us as parents.

The medical bill keeps increasing daily and has since been piling up. The treatment has over-shot the initial bill that was given to us before we came, because her condition exceeded their estimation.

The major issue is the hospital bill and not really our up-keep, that is, myself, my wife and our 15-month old baby, (Okiki’s younger sister). She is currently at the intensive care unit (ICU). This costs between $6,000 and $10,000 daily. Sometimes, two nurses are stationed to take care of her daily and it costs a lot of money.

“The good thing is that they are not taking any chance. They are all over her all the time. They are monitoring her regularly especially as she is an international patient. The bill is growing higher,” he lamented.

Okiki’s father further stated that for “every parent of a child with this critical health challenge, one only manages to sleep and to wake up hoping that the next day would be different. We have gone through this trauma all this while. Though, we have faith in God but every passing day, we are afraid for her life. Here in the hospital, as critical as her condition is , we are living and sharing her pains more so that the bills pile up every moment.

“ We appeal to Nigerians not to give up on Okiki. With their support, God will not disappoint us because she keeps improving daily. All the operations have been very critical. They took bones from her hand and leg to construct her skull. And she is doing fine.

“We appreciate efforts by all Nigerians including individuals, groups and corporate organizations. Everybody has been very supportive. We thank the Nigerian government, the National Assembly, and particularly the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal and other kind-hearted people and members of our family for their support.
“On behalf of our daughter Okiki, and other children and parents in this condition, we urge government to institute a Special Trust Fund to take care of such rare and critical cases in the country. This fund should be adequately funded to cater for such critical needs.

“For us, Okiki’s parents, we are in this condition but hope that one day God will deliver us.
“In this situation, we repeat our appeal for quick intervention from the government and other Nigerians. Our wish here is that others should be spared this experience. We plead further with government to establish a fund to cater for such children in this condition.”

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Sport: Mourinho's Change Of Mind Over Rooney As Lukaku Shines by amadibethelya: 4:04pm On Jul 26, 2013
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said he was “calm” over his high-stakes bid for Wayne Rooney after emerging star Romelu Lukaku burnished his growing reputation with another two goals in Jakarta.

Mourinho indicated there had been no new offer for Rooney after Manchester United rejected an initial bid. But he also said Chelsea were sticking by their decision not to target any other players.

“No,” said Mourinho, after Chelsea’s 8-1 hammering of Indonesia All-Stars late on Thursday, when asked if there had been movement on the transfer situation.

“In this moment we have what you know… that bid that was public and official, and after that nothing else and we are calm, as we told you. We are calm because we are happy with what we have.”

The Portuguese manager has much riding on the Rooney bid with Chelsea looking at no other players after the signings of Germany forward Andre Schurrle, 22, Holland midfielder Marco van Ginkel, 20, and veteran Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, 40.

But he has also been boosted by the return from loan spells of 22-year-old Belgium midfielder Kevin de Bruyne — currently nursing a knee injury — and powerhouse striker Lukaku, who has bagged four goals on Chelsea’s three-game Asian tour.

Lukaku, who struck the winner from the penalty spot in Bangkok, and was also on target in Kuala Lumpur, added a close-range header and side-footed finish on Thursday to press his claims for regular first team football next season.

Mourinho said erratic, 50 million pounds ($77 million) Spanish striker Fernando Torres should be pleased to have competition for a starting spot from the imposing Lukaku, even without Rooney in the squad.

“I think Fernando should be happy because we have competition on the team and I think it’s good for everybody in every position,” he said.

“So Fernando, I think he will be pleased because for some time at Chelsea he was basically the young striker, after that it was Demba Ba, arriving in January… and now we have three strikers.”

He added that veteran England midfielder Frank Lampard would resume training next week after an Achilles injury as Chelsea head for four more pre-season games in the United States.

Chelsea won the Premier League twice during Mourinho’s first spell in charge and they are seen as a serious threat to title-holders Manchester United and 2012 winners Manchester City, who are both blooding new managers.

And Mourinho will hope to steal a march on United by racking up a three-point lead before they meet on August 26, after scheduling arrangements handed Chelsea two home games at the start of the season to the champions’ one match, away to Swansea.

“I’m never too worried with the fixtures with the calendar, when you play, when you play at home, when you play away, when you play against a rival,” Mourinho said.

“I’m not worried about it. We just start against Hull City, we will try to win and after that comes (Aston) Villa, Man United… match after match and we’ll see what happens.”

Politics / News: EFCC Arrests Ex-commissioner In Imo by amadibethelya: 8:25am On Jul 26, 2013
Operatives of anti-graft organisation, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, stormed Owerri on Tuesday and reportedly arrested the immediate past commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mr. Jerry Okolie.

Vanguard gathered that while two directors of account and general services and treasurers of two local councils are said to be cooling their heels in EFCC net, some other members of the sacked Imo State executive council have since scampered into safety to avoid being picked up by the stern looking anti-graft personnel.

A senior staff in Imo State civil service, who pleaded anonymity, told Vanguard that EFCC operatives had severally been visiting the state to probe reports of alleged fraud perpetrated by the state government.

The source said: “In this instance, the EFCC operatives stormed the Commissioners’ Quarters, situated along Concorde Avenue, Owerri, on Tuesday and arrested the former Commissioner for Lola Government Affairs, Mr. Jerry Okolie”.

He said some other ex-commissioners still staying in the quarters since they were sacked by the governor, quickly fled into safety.

The source added: “The EFCC operatives truly encountered stiff resistance from security personnel at the premises but were eventually allowed to carry out their assignment when they properly identified themselves and their mission.”

Another staff of the Ministry of Local Government Affairs who spoke on anonymity, explained that the former commissioner’s arrest might be connected with petitions sent to EFCC on the alleged embezzlement of local council funds in the state.
When Vanguard visited some council headquarters yesterday most treasurers and directors of administration and general services were said to “have gone to Owerri for official assignments”.

It would be recalled that some of the aides of Governor Rochas Okorocha, who have been constant visitors to EFCC Headquarters, Abuja, includes the former Commissioner for Finance, Deacon Chike Okafor, and state Accountant-General, Mr. George Eche.

Romance / Life: Couple Who Broke Up 20 Years Ago Re-united After Kidney Match by amadibethelya: 11:50pm On Jul 25, 2013
An estranged couple has got back together after two decades - after the man agreed to donate a kidney to his ex-girlfriend.
Gordon Henry and Jo Macfarlane had a son together, but split up in 1993 and started living 135 miles away.

But when her chronic kidney condition flared up and she needed an organ donation, he stepped forward and offered to go under the knife on her behalf.

The pair, who lived together in Reading, first split in 1993 shortly after the birth of their son Jordan.
Ms Macfarlane, 44, had long suffered from kidney disease, and when she was just 19 received a transplanted organ from her sister Amanda.

In 2004 her condition flared up again, so she moved to Sheffield to be nearer to her sister while she spent five years on dialysis waiting for a new kidney - which was eventually provided by Mr Henry, 53.

'It got to the point where I did desperately need a new kidney,' she said. 'My son said he wanted to help - then his father got wind of that and he came forward as a donor.

'He did it after all this distance between us for years. He risked his life to do it for me and Jordan.
'At first, I didn't think he would go through with it, but he went through all the tests and when he was nursing his own mother and having a tough time himself.

The operation took place at Northern General Hospital in Sheffield in 2009 - and when it was all over, the ex-lovers reconciled and got together again.

'It was very strange,' Ms Macfarlane said. 'Everyone was saying he wanted to get back with me, even the nurses at the hospital, and I completely dismissed it.

'I've heard of couples getting back together after years of separation but not this way. We've put everything that happened in the past behind us.'

Mr Henry added: 'Giving Jo a kidney was a chance to repay her for all she's done for our son, she's brought him up all these years.

'One of the strangest things about it was we had been apart for so long, but it definitely felt like the right thing to do.

'I was over the moon I was able to help. I hadn't any intention of us getting back together, that wasn't the reason for doing it, but it is a fantastic ending.'

Well this cannot happen in Naija, abi what do you think, lets discuss.

Politics / Lagos Is Safe For Igbo-Says ACN by amadibethelya: 9:04pm On Jul 25, 2013
The Lagos State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, has lashed out at those who are playing cheap and dirty politics by the decision of the Lagos State government to move some homeless, indigent citizens to their home states for rehabilitation.

The party said that no sane government would be blackmailed into allowing homeless Nigerians to continue to inflict security and environmental problems on its state just to please those that readily play lousy and retrogressive politics with issues for their selfish and ulterior interests.

In a release in Lagos, signed by the Lagos State Publicity Secretary of the ACN, Joe Igbokwe, the party said it is particularly irked by the decision of some professional chance takers and political opportunists to take advantage of the recent movement of some indigent, homeless and social miscreants to Onitsha for the purpose of re-connecting with their families when they have no tangible business in Lagos.

The party said there should be an end to opportunistic politics and cheap ethnic and tribal politics as are being played out over the issue. The party said that transporting indigent, homeless miscreants to their home states is not a new idea and not limited to Igbos.

“We expect that the opposition in Lagos and its array of frustrated politicians in Lagos will certainly seek to play politics with the decision of the Lagos State government to move some people that have no tangible business staying in Lagos to their home states. We expected that the professional ethnic agitators who have wasted public offices in Igboland, pillaging resources that would have served the interests of the people are now cashing further from the plights of their vicious approach to governance on this issue. We however want to state that it is a shame to the opposition that it is seeking cheap political capital from the plight of the hapless victims of its free loading approach to governance and has drawn the support of ethnic irredentists whose failure on governance left the Igbo people so poor that they have become homeless refugees in Lagos and other parts of the country. It is a huge irony that the PDP, which has purloined the country in fourteen years of vicious corrupt governance, is the one now seeking to make political capital from the plight of its victims and says so much of the dominant politics of deception, corruption and greed which had hallmarked the unfortunate PDP governance of the country since 1999.

“To put the records straight, the Lagos State government, with its commitment to the interests of Lagosians and in its effort to build a functional modern mega city, had long embarked on the decision to pick up the many derelicts, the homeless, beggars and social miscreants that inhabit all parts of Lagos.”

Clean them up, find means of livelihood for those that are employable and send those it cannot manage to their respective states. We are all aware that this scheme has seen the practical reduction in the number of the beggars, street urchins and social miscreants that used to constitute real danger to life in Lagos and has seen such people moved back to various states, mainly in the North.

“We should note also that other states in the South, including South West states have received such people and the Lagos State Government has been careful to ensure that the number of people involved in such periodic movements are minimal and are only people who do not have where to stay in Lagos, who don’t have any real engagement in Lagos and who constitute nuisance to other Lagosians. We also put the nation on notice that before the latest movement of some people to Onitsha, we notified the Anambra State government, which neither responded nor took action on our complaint. We also want the public to note that the Lagos State government was involved in similar deal with the Akwa Ibom State government when some indigent Lagosians were moved back from Akwa Ibom State to Lagos. We want Nigerians to note that such movements are common with nearly all states in Nigeria and is becoming an issue just because selfish politicians and ethnic reapers who were prominent in the despoliation of the country see it as new and worth cashing in on.”

ACN added: “We want to throw a frontal challenge to the PDP and the ethnic chance takers now making undue issue over the present case to let Nigerians know any one of those sent back to their states who has a home, job or business in Lagos. We want them to go further to tell us any of those deported with any fixed address or legitimate means of livelihood. We are peeved that selfish politicians and their ethnic soulmates who have relentlessly pursued the pauperization of Nigerians even in their home states are the ones seeking cheap political ends from the plight of their victims and this is condemnable.
“Lagos ACN wants to let Nigerians know that Igbos constitute over 45 per cent of the population of Lagos and they dominate key sectors of the Lagos economy. Is there any case where any of the millions of Igbo with one legitimate business or the other in Lagos is involved in the recent movement? Igbos find Lagos a safe haven for their legitimate productive activities and the present government has sustained good and cordial efforts to ensure this prevails. We want to state that Lagos hosts the largest population of Igbo in any single state outside Igboland, how is it that the movement of about 60 Igbo miscreants to their home state has now become an issue political and ethnic reapers want to cash in to destroy this priceless relationship?

“We want to warn Ndigbo and Lagosians to beware of the leaven of the PDP and their ethnic collaborators who have spared nothing to deepen poverty and want in Nigeria and always turn round to cash in on the fate of the victims of these deadly politics. We want to assure Ndigbo in Lagos that nothing will be done to hurt and injure their interests and equally let those whose stay in Lagos constitutes threat to others that the Lagos State government will do everything within its rights to protect the lives, interests and well being of the over 20 million Lagosians who are law abiding and find legitimate reasons to stay in Lagos.”
