Exploration and production geologists and geophysicists

Researchers

Internships

Typical Work Location

Initial assignments in exploration, production, development or research are typically in Houston, Texas. Longer-term assignments could be in Houston or one of our international offices located around the globe.

Typical Starting Opportunities

Geoscientists with ExxonMobil have the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills and expertise throughout their careers. Multiple assignments in operations and/or research ensure the needed breadth and depth of experience and expertise for success. Geoscientists have opportunities to develop broad backgrounds necessary to do exploration and production mapping and prospecting or to specialize in various technical aspects of the exploration and production process.

Typical Assignments

Operations

Exploration assignments are done at the prospect to play scales and focus on discovering and assessing new fields. Regional/frontier teams integrate data on play to basin scales to identify areas for future exploration or to better define an existing exploration trend. New opportunity teams typically work in areas where new concessions or discoveries have been made to test new prospects of confirm existing discoveries to determine whether or when production operations should commence.

Production assignments are done at the reservoir to field scales and focus on defining, developing and depleting new or mature exiting fields. A strong emphasis in these assignments will be to build skills in integrating and interpreting geological and geophysical data, such as core/cuttings, fluids, outcrops, and seismic, using advanced mapping, interpretation, modeling and other techniques.

Development assignments are in projects transitioning from exploration to production and the experiences and skills learned will be a combination of both.

Research

Fundamental and applied research opportunities also exist for PhD applicants in three general areas:

Hydrocarbon systems research includes, geochemistry, basin evolution, structural dynamics, petrophysics and geomechanics

Reservoir performance prediction research includes controls on flow in clastic and carbonate reservoirs, geologic modeling and visualization

Geophysics research includes advanced processing, acquisition, interpretation and modeling of seismic and other geophysical data

Research in all areas includes a significant component of field studies and takes advantage of state-of-the-art analytical and experimental laboratories and processing and numerical modeling capabilities.

The Finance & Operations Manager focuses on all issues related to the successful and efficient management of the financial and administrative systems for field projects. S/he works closely with Project Coordinators and the field based project team to provide daily direction and support to JSI Bilateral Projects. The Finance Manager works alongside other project members, such as the Project Coordinator, Senior Advisor and Chief of Party in all operational aspects of field and project management and financial aspects of proposal budget development. S/he also provides overall financial and administrative support to the International Division. The Finance and Operations Manager is based in Boston and is supervised by the Director of Finance and Operations. RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities and duties include: Project Management: Acting as a resource person to Project Coordinators, Chiefs of Party, and Field Office staff in the areas of finance, operations, human resources, contracting, procurement, and administration. Serving as the financial/ operational support member of a backstopping team for 3-8 projects. Assisting project teams in trouble-shooting operational challenges as they arise. Monitoring, analyzing, and facilitating discussion around project financial information. Providing financial orientations for new project field staff (Chiefs of Party, Field Office Financial Managers). Maintaining an up-to-date and comprehensive understanding of contracts, cooperative agreements, terms and conditions, and requirements. Traveling to selected field offices for start-up, close-out, trainings, financial reviews of projects or general operational support. Becoming proficient in and acting as a resource person for other project staff in JSI's field accounts system, budget tracking system and financial status reports. Ensuring consistent implementation of Accounting and JSI International Division financial policies/ standards, as well as donor rules and regulations. Assisting project teams in managing partnerships, subawards, and grants and developing related tools and systems. New Business Development: Develop and update resources/ tools for proposal budget development; train staff in their use. Review JSI International Division proposal budgets before submission to clients. Work on selected cost applications. Overall Division Support: Developing/ refining systems, tools, manuals, and other resources for project operations management; training staff in their use. Training new division staff in project operational management issues including finance, operations, human resources, contracting, procurement, and administration through both one-on-one and stand-up trainings. Serving as a liaison between other JSI departments including Accounting, Human Resources, and Administration in both the Boston and Washington, DC offices. QUALIFICATIONS: Business and/or project management- related degree: Bachelor's, Master's preferred. Minimum of five years' experience as the finance/ operations component of a management team for international development projects, in a backstopping team or overseas. Strong financial management and accounting skills. Good knowledge of USAID rules and regulations and/or other donors. Dynamic team player with strong multicultural communication skills. REQUIREMENTS OF CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate must possess a good knowledge of Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and Classification Societies’ compliance requirements, as well as, general knowledge of operation, maintenance and repair of marine mechanical systems.

In addition, he/she must possess the following:
• HND Marine Engineering or Class 2 Certificate of Competency for unlimited tonnage with Crude Oil Petroleum Endorsement
• Class 1 Certificate of Competency is preferable.
• Minimum of three (3) years experience as a 3rd Engineer on Foreign Going Vessels or five (5) years experience on a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC)
• Strong leadership and excellent communication skills
• Ability to adapt to tight deadlines, heavy workloads, and frequent changes in priorities.
