Literature Review Background of the poem The poem is on the role of Arugba, a virgin maid, in the famous Yoruba festival "Osun Osogbo festival." A festival that is over 600 years old, celebrated in Osun state of Nigeria. It paints the cultural value, belief and heritage of the Yoruba community. Plot of the poem The plot is centered on a virgin maid called Arugba selected by the goddess to serve her purpose. It covers her noble ceremonial walk while carrying a calabash to the Riverside where she offered sacrifice to the goddess. Structure of the poem The poem is a 20 line poem written in couplet form with no particular feet, meter, or syllable structure. Theme Chastity, Devotion, Tradition, Festival. Vocabulary Arugba: a Yoruba word simply translated as ‘the one who carries the calabash,’ Her act of carrying the calabash marks the grand finale of the Osun Osogbo festival. Atunpa Olojumerindinlogun: an ancient lamp consisting of sixteen faces, fired up inside the palace square during early days in the celebration of Osun Osogbo festival where it burns from night till dawn during which the Ataoja (the king) comes out with his queens to dance with his subjects, symbolising his humility and concern for their well-being. Iyere: a song sang for the monarch to dance round his family compound in company of his queen(s) during early days in the Osun Osogbo festival Oshun: is a deity of the river and fresh water, luxury and pleasure, sexuality and fertility, and beauty and love. She is connected to destiny and divination. She is the patron saint the Osun River in Nigeria, which bears her name. Oshun is honored at the Osun-Osogbo Festival a two-week-long annual festival, usually in August, at the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Groveon the banks of the Osun River, Nigeria. Oba Larooye: the first Oba of Osogbo, he entered into a convenant with Osun the goddess that every year a virgin girl from the royal family would bring sacrifices to her. Ataoja: the title for the king of Osogbo Agbo: Herb or concoction believed to have medicinal properties. |
ARUGBA Atunpa Olojumerindinlogun glows no more. Even Iyere does not sound like before. Oshun, the goddess has grown hungry. A sacrifice pronto or she becomes angry. Oba Laaroye's promise must be kept, In accordance with the ancestral precept. A beauty adored in chastity and purity, Must feed Oshun as customarily duty. Arugba, the votary maid, Serves Oshun untouched, unafraid. When she leads with sacrifice on her head, Even Ataoja dares not walk ahead. Her gait, regal, defined and measured. Her calabash, exalted and treasured. Her first step into the Osun river, Turns it to "Agbo" healing every fever. A mortal, turned messenger of the goddess, Now a carrier of the goddess' goodness. No wonder she's revered by every believer, For her existence ensures Oshun lives forever. - Amberacious Poems (c) 2016.

BREAK THE SILENCE NOT THE CHILD It’s an era of breaking things, sportsmen breakingrecords, scientists breaking new grounds, celebrities breaking relationships and yours truly is on a mission“to break”too. I have equipped myself with some dangerous weapons, I have Torr’s hammer on my right hand, Sango’s hammer on my left hand and Triple H sledge hammer and other WMD in my backpack.I’m gonna break the silence on child abuse. Before I break this silence into pieces lemme introduce up stage the big boss, what is child abuse? According to WHO, child abuse is defined as all forms of physical and/or emotional ill-treatment, sexual abuse, neglect or treatment or commercial or other exploitation, resulting in actual or potential harm to the child’s health, survival, development or dignity in the context of a relationship of responsibility, trust or power. Now let’s start breaking the silence by breaking the definition into comprehendible pieces.(winks) Break the silence: Spare the rod, care with love Ok! This may be hard for some people to shallow, especially when a portion of the holy book says the opposite. Well, I ain’t a preacher here (snobs with an attitude, excuse me!) but I bring to you the gospel of facts (grins from cheek to cheek) . It has been proven with facts that physical child abuses are perpetuated by adults who have authoritarian control, anxiety-provoking behaviour, and lack of parental warmth and not by parents who love their children as claimed by some. There is a thin line between child punishment and physical child abuse, one which is often crossed. Physical abuse is the intentional use of physical force (such as hitting, beating, kicking, shaking, biting, strangling, scalding, burning, poisoning and suffocating) against the child that results in harm or has a high likelihood of resulting in harm for the child’s health, survival, development or dignity. So when next you raise your hand to hit that little creature ask yourself this question will this break this child or will it break the silence? Break the silence: Enemy within A Yoruba adage says the pestilence that would kill a tree is found on the tree. Statistics show that the majority of perpetuators of sexual abuse on children are people known to and by them. A whopping 60%of perpetuators of sexual abuse are acquaintances such as family friends, babysitters and neighbours.30%of these perverts are relatives of the child such as fathers, brothers, mothers, sisters, uncles, aunties and cousins. Surprisingly strangers are offenders in about10%of child sexual abuse cases. Here are some disturbing questions. Can we then conclude that our children are safer with strangers? When our trust to entrust turns to a must to lust, who is gonna break the silence? Break the silence: The silent killer Hypertension has been tipped for the award of the world’s silent killer for adults but in the children’s category, psychological child abuse is topping the chart. Though it doesn’t kill immediately like known diseases it surely does with time. There are parts of the world where abusive words from parents are kinda culturally acceptable. In this side of the globe, abusive words like Ode, Olodo, Apa, Alainironuare daily anthem recited in many homes. Before you wash your hands off like Pontius Pilate and say no I don’t say such, note, psychological child abuse can be defined as a repeated pattern of caregiver behaviour or extreme incident(s) that convey to children that they are worthless, flawed, unloved, unwanted, endangered, or only of value in meeting another’s need. Lobatan! Did I hear you say guilty as charged? Break the silence: Runaway Parents Runaway bride is the title of a Hollywood movie released in 1999. The movie has a poster of Julian Robert in a wedding gown and a pair of trainer’s canvas. In the movie she was always running away from her own wedding ceremony, how ridiculous that sounds! Bringing this home to our discussion on breaking, many children have become broken today due to their runaway parents. When I say runaway parents, it has more to do than the physical absence of parents or abandonment of children. It also extends to the parents’ failure to provide food, clothing, shelter, medical care, education, or supervision to the degree that the child’s health, safety and well-being are threatened with harm. So let all runaways run this way, pick up a hammer and let’s together break the silence. Break the silence not the child. HEROS AT NIGHT The cool breeze kissed my wearied body as the rain continued to fall I prayed for the impossible, "God please let this be a calm night call" But the scream from the tyres of a car, as it halted suddenly, just outside Confirmed my prayer was a Gethsamane prayer, my eyes opened wide "Doctor! Doctor!!" A disturbed woman cried out with a tone of urgency As a bloodclothed boy was wheeled into the accident and emergency With no Cinderella shoes, no Harry Potter magical wand, just a ward coat I answered the Hippocratic call with a stethoscope dangling on my throat What happened? I asked the woman. Sleeves rolled up, gloves on. The woman cried, "he was shot, please don't let him die, he's my son." He was shot by the police while going to view a late night football match They shot my boy, but real criminals are out there, they refused to catch When we approached them, they said the guilty one was aloof Now they are saying, he didn't shoot him, that where is my proof Examining the boy, his condition was critical, he had a patent bleeder And with a second delayed then our chances would be more slender "Your son needs an emergency surgery." I reported to the mother He has lost too much blood, he can't afford to lose any further Theatre set, all scrubbed, on the boy's chest theatre light fell The surgery lasted the whole night and the boy fought well The boy was lucky, the bullet was a rib away from his heart But the mother says her son is alive, because i did my own part True heroes are not those who work while others sleep at night Anybody can be a hero, all it takes is for you to play your part right. -Amberacious Poems (c) 2015.

Idiopathic Broca’s Aphasia Dr. Luke’s mind flashed back to events that occurred nine months ago when he revealed to Mrs. Zachariah that she was pregnant. He remembered she told him of a strange story about her husband Zachariah. She said that three month prior to that time her husband went to the Temple to perform his priestly duties. While he was performing the routine rituals an angel appeared to him and foretold that she was going to be pregnant and have a son. However, being an inquisitive person her husband demanded for a sign and the angel was said to be angry at the level of her husband’s unbelief. Angel was then said to have made her husband dumb and he has remained dumb ever since then. The dumb story sounded dumb to Dr. Luke. He could not fathom how a hallucinating experience could be associated with an aphasic episode so he requested that Mrs. Zachariah with her husband should come to the clinic the following day for proper clinical investigations and subsequent treatment. The following day, patient folder 278 was opened for Mr. Zachariah. While he was being attended to by Dr. Luke, he wrote down the same story that his wife had earlier told Dr. Luke. Dr Luke thought about his possible differentials; Stroke topped his list. Others that made the list were brain tumor, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease and head injury. Also on the list initially was herpes viral encephalitis, however, this was immediately ruled out by the sudden nature of the loss of speech. Dr. Luke then started ruling out other differential diagnosis by asking for the presence of history of head injury, seizure and classical symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Zachariah confirmed the absence of all these symptoms by answering NO in writing. Dr Luke struck out epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease and head injury from his head list; he was left with stroke and brain tumor. He then asked for presence of history of headache, loss of consciousness and inability to move any of his limbs. To these Zachariah again replied NO in writing. With all his differentials now struck out Dr. Luke moved to his next line of action and requested for an MRI of Zachariah’s brain. “Since from the history I can’t get a clear picture of what is going on in his brain, the MRI will certainly show a clearer picture,” Dr. Luke thought in his mind. Few minutes later the result was out. Dr. Luke checked through the frontal lobe of the cerebrum for the notorious Broca center. He was shocked that there was no lesion at the Broca center. Then he checked around the other parts of the brain for any clue on what may be going on. He found nothing. The MRI film revealed a brain that was as clear as a normal brain could be. “Why is this film also appearing as dumb as its owner?” He asked in his mind in frustration. He turned to the couple and explained, “Your Brain MRI result appears normal” Then in an attempt not to unduly raise the hope of the couple, choosing his words carefully he continued slowly. “When issues like this happen in medicine, when the pathogenesis of a particular illness is rather unclear, we then to label such idiopathic, so the condition we are dealing with here is what I would call “Idiopathic Broca’s Aphasia.” To be continued............... |

I SEE SMILES I see smiles everyday while working at my workshop A contagious nuisance whose spread is my job to stop Smile of a sickle cell child in excruciating painful crisis As his blood cells accelerate its process of lysis Smile of a soldier whose limbs got amputated As he wakes to the reality of a dream truncated Smile of a nursing mother who just lost her only child As she revisits land of childlessness, so lonely, yet wild Smile of a fiancée whose partner tested positive as a carrier As she weighs her options against the newly found barrier Smile of a newly married, beautiful young lady, full of life As she hears her past life style has made her fruitless as a wife Smile of a father of four with a late stage cancer As he looks into my eyes searching for an answer Lost in my thoughts within the walls of the call room I puzzle on the cause of these smiles at looming doom Could these smiles be a sign of denial of the true expression Emotions bottled up in confinement of religious delusion Could they be a surrender to the piercing sword of fate The monster that robs us off joy, the inevitable syndicate Could they be a desire not to go down without a good fight After all, doctors are but humans, we can't always be right I remember my tutor's words, "you can't save all, you ain't God" "It is only the Creator that has the answer to every odd." -Amberacious Poems (c) 2015

HOLE IN HEART “Stab the body and it heals, but injure the heart and the wound lasts a lifetime.” ― Mineko Iwasaki All I wanted was a selfie with you pouting But you started a fight and kept shouting Why was your love a battle field Why was your heart too cold to yield These questions, in my head keep spinning I guess the answers lie in the very beginning The first time I saw you was on the Facebook A beauty that warranted a second look With all your tempting curves and angles You stood at akimbo revealing your bangles You wore this smile that remained a wonder A wonder that led my mind to wander In your lust, I was lost Finding you, my heart was the cost My moments with you were breathtaking But the memories left behind are heartbreaking You tip-toed away without a trace Leaving me with a heart plagued with space You left a hole in my heart, I felt I was dying I know I should be strong and I've been trying I heard soon you would be wearing a ring I hope you've tamed your love bug not to sting As he gives you his heart in whole I pray you don't return it to him too with a hole - Amberacious poems (c) 2015

PROVERBS OF MY MOTHER "By all means, marry. If you get a good wife, you'll become happy; if you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher." - Socrates My daughter take heed to your mother's life saving warning Experience is a good teacher but it's never pleasant learning As you leave this house, this day, to wear this your man's ring Take this with you: You are a queen because he is your king Learn never to surrender to friend's influence A little distance from them makes a lot of difference A wise wife makes her husband assume his position as head Don't be fooled by the extreme feminists and take his stead Modern day equality in marriage is all about partnership Don't use competition to expose your sealed relationship Don't insult your husband with Laws of woman rights An angry man will always give his wife sleepless nights You don't have to win all arguments, home is not Law Court True victory lies in agreement, and silence don't always hurt A man should be eager to return from work to his house Don't turn his tranquility base to a cage of cat and mouse Men are different, they go hungry of many things, not just food So don't come every night saying you are tired and not in mood It's lack of wisdom, to use sex as a weapon to your gain at home It's the pursue of selfish interests that ruined the ancient Rome Remember to keep bothering about your shape, size and gait Your marriage does not stop others from using theirs as bait Lastly, please do not tell me of your quarrels, don't even bother When things fall apart, just tell it to God to help get it together - Amberacious Poems (c) 2015. Inspired by Words from a mother to her daughter By Plateau Reporters. "By all means, marry. If you get a good wife, you'll become happy; if you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher." - Socrates Socrates was a classical Greek (Athenian) philosopher who lived between 470 - 399 BC. He was credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy. He was a tutor to great men and has intimidating list achievements to his credit, making him unargueably a success story but his marriage to Xanthippe remains a shadow to the story of an enigmatic figure that once walked the face of our earth. Xanthippe is often remembered as a shrew, a scolding wife who was a pain in the rear end for philosophy’s most prestigious character. The overwhelming consensus is that she was an argumentative, troublesome wife who was the source of many headaches for the philosopher. It was said that Xanthippe was so disagreeable that she once poured the contents of a chamber pot over the head of Socrates. The above qoute was inspired by Socrates' sufferings from his wife. ABOBAKU "Iku npa agiliti alawo, kambelete eni ti fi awo re sogun aaiku." - Yoruba adage The crimson sun sinks into the western skies A rumor escapes from the palace and flies The inevitable descends on the throne Silence becomes the only audible tone The advisers now seek after advice Who does the gods desire for sacrifice? Baba Ifa, into the ears of the gods whispers In a language only the gods could decipher The Opele convenes the gods' wish as it cast down The Seer peeping into Opon Ifa gives a knowing frown No mortal man knows what the Ifa says Except he who understands Orunmila's ways The gods' lieutenant joins his ancestors in fortnight And the gods delight I escort him on this fearful flight As my father did, the last king, into the land of dead Now the same ancestral heritage falls on my head It's time I embrace my destiny with all my heart It will be my son's turn when the Aremo departs I remember my father's last words to me When the gods choose you, please don't flee Just like Kings don't die, but only sleep Abobaku don't lie, our promises we keep Every man lives for a reason, I suppose But Abobaku dies to fulfill a purpose. -Amberacious Poems (c) 2015. "Iku npa agiliti alawo, kambelete eni ti fi awo re sogun aaiku." Meaning: Agiliti is a resilient type of lizard of the Iguana family, whose tough skin is often used in making longevity charms. The moral of the idiom is, just as the agiliti eventually dies, so will owner of the charm. No one lives forever. The Abobaku: (meaning one who dies with the king) in Yoruba culture is a person that is appointed upon a king’s coronation. Whoever is given that title would enjoy the same privilege with the monarch and live big just like the Oba. Once the monarch is dead, he must die too. He is expected to be buried with the king in order to easy his journey into the other realm. Ifá: is a religion and system of divination and refers to the verses of the literary corpus known as the Odu Ifá. Orunmila is identified as the Grand Priest, as he is who revealed divinity and prophecy to the world. Baba Ifa/Babalawo's use either the divining chain known as Opele, or the sacred palm or kola nuts called Ikin, on the wooden divination tray called Opon Ifá. Aremo: The king's eldest son and the heir to the throne.

CHAPTER FOUR: THE BRIT MILAH (LUKE 1:57-80) The Brit milah It has been eight days after Elizabeth was delivered of a bouncing baby boy, and according to the Jewish religion, the baby was to be circumcised on this day, in an occasion called Brit milah. Dr. Luke has been given the honor to be the Mohel, the ritual circumciser at the ceremony. Dr. Luke was also requested to come with a Sandek, the companion of the child for the ritual. It was the early hour of the day. Dr Luke walked through the busy streets of Judea, whose occupants had already started their trade. He walked briskly, as he was almost late, and Theophilus, the teenage boy that accompanied him, was chasing him to keep up with his pace, because he had to wait behind and purchase his Tallit for the ceremony. Dr. Luke had chosen Theophilus to serve as the Sandek of the ceremony. Theophilus just resumed as a medical student under the tutelage of Dr. Luke. This would be his first field experience, and Dr. Luke needed him to observe how circumcision was being done closely, hence his choice for the Sandek role. His job as the Sandek would be to hold the baby’s thigh and knee, while Dr. Luke, the Mohel circumcised the child. As Dr. Luke entered Rev. Zachariah’s compound, he wondered why the choice of the house for the ceremony. Customarily the synagogue was used, though the choice of homes was also acceptable. All seemed set for the ceremony as he got there at the nick of time. After greeting the already seated guests, his first port of call was to the table at the front stage, on which a box containing the traditional circumcision tools set was placed. He had to inspect the box and ensure that no piece was missing, before the commencement of the event. Dr. Luke covered the wooden box with its cow hide coverlet, all its content seemed to be in place ,except for the expected absence of a sedative agent, as sedation was not used in Jewish circumcision. Dr. Luke remembered the argument that the mitzvah of brit milah lies in the pain it causes. With pity, he then looked at the innocent baby, as Elizabeth carried him into the open space for the ceremony. “You will cry the hell out today,” Dr. Luke wanted to whisper at the baby’s ears. Then the pity eyes of Dr. Luke fell on Rev. Zachariah, the father of the child. He was busy attempting to communicate with one of his guests using sign language, but unfortunately, the guest appeared clueless as he obviously did not understand any of his signs. The guest just cleverly smiled backed at Zachariah. “But why has his speech problem defiled all medical interventions,” Dr. Luke questioned himself. To be continued............ |

CHAPTER FOUR THE BRIT MILAH Loading.................

Parthenogenesis “Parthenogenesis!” Dr. Luke exclaimed. Mary and Elizabeth looked lost. They had expected a logical explanation on how Mary’s pregnant test could be said to be positive, since Dr. Luke personally confirmed that she was still a virgin. “What is parthenogenesis?” Mary asked in her cluelessness “Parthenogenesis is a scientific term for a process that a layman understands as virgin birth,” Dr. Luke tried to simplify. “It’s a form of asexual reproduction, that has been scientifically proven in plants, and lower animals.” He continued to educate his patients “Though, it’s yet to be seen in humans, because of the nature of our imprinted genes,” He cautioned Mary wondered how such an explanation could be acceptable, if it has not been seen to occur in any human before. Dr. Luke continued his reproductive education. “In humans what you have is the donation of 23 chromosomes from the male gamete and another 23 chromosomes from the female gamete to form the 46 chromosomes at fertilization” “But in your case, your ovum must have undergone some unexplainable process, to have produced the entire 46 chromosomes without the help, and presence of the male gamete.” “And if that is the case, then, since the female gamete carries only X-sex chromosome, you can be certain that the baby you are carrying now is a girl.” Mary watched in amusement, as Dr. Luke continued to contradict himself, then when she thought she has heard enough, she voiced out. “It’s a boy; the Angel said I will have a boy child,” Mary corrected. Dr. Luke paused, and then looked at his audience. The ridiculous look on their faces told him he has been making fool of himself all this while. Really, deep down he knew all his justifications were all fallacy. “Could this be another mysterious case beyond medicine?” he wondered. To be continued............... |

The Two Finger Test Although, Dr. Luke has reservations for the two finger test, he had to do it anyway. The controversies that surrounded the test ethically, were enough reasons of avoiding the procedure whenever he could. But when the benefit outweighed the risk, like in a situation like this, then his options would be limited. Being conscious of the medical ethics guiding his practice, he had ensured a written consent form got signed, before he performed the test. Nurse Abigail who was the chaperon during the procedure, led Mary away from the side couch, back to her seat, before heading back to her nurses’ post. Dr. Luke wore this countenance of a loser. His finding revealed an intact hymen. “One down, one to go,” he thought in his heart, as he disposed his examining gloves into the sanitary bin by the side couch. “Your claim of being a virgin is certainly not debatable.” He reported confidently. “The test revealed you still have your hymen intact.” “So now you will do this test at the lab,” he said as he filled an investigation form, and handed it over to Mary. To be continued.......... |
The Hallucination Dr. Luke listened keenly, as Mary explained her supposed experience with an angel. Dr. Luke was not new to such hallucinating experience shared by patients. Most claimed to see person not seen by other people in clear consciousness, or hear voice, not heard by other people in clear consciousness. Sometimes, such voice was said to instruct them on things to come, or things they must do. Mary ‘s story had similar pattern, she claimed she had an encounter with one angel, called Gabriel, who came to inform her that she was to conceive, and get birth to God’s son. Dr. Luke wondered how she expected him, or any other right thinking individual to believe such deluded story. In an attempted to make sense from what Dr. Luke tagged as out pour of nonsense, he asked “So how did this Gabriel say you were going to conceive, since you are a virgin,” Dr. Luke mocked Clearly, Mary was so engrossed in her story that she did not sense her audience was not just doubting her story, but also doubting her mental state. She innocently replied, “the Angel said the Spirit of God would over shadow me.” Dr. Luke thought that he has heard enough, but before he could label Mary as mentally unstable, he has to prove either one of these two points, or both points: that Mary was not a virgin, as she claimed, and that she was not pregnant, as she assumed. These, Dr. Luke did not think would be hard to prove. Then he announced the next line of his plan. “You will be doing some tests ma,” he said politely “The first is a virginity test; the second is a pregnancy test.” To be continued............ |
